Abstract

This handbook addresses a growing list of challenges faced by regions and cities in the Pacific;Rim, drawing connections around the what, why, and how questions that are fundamental;to sustainable development policies and planning practices. These include the connection;between cities and surrounding landscapes, across different boundaries and scales; the persistence;of environmental and development inequities; and the growing impacts of global;climate change, including how physical conditions and social implications are being anticipated;and addressed. Building upon localized knowledge and contextualized experiences,;this edited collection brings attention to place-;based;approaches across the Pacific Rim and;makes an important contribution to the scholarly and practical understanding of sustainable;urban development models that have mostly emerged out of the Western experiences. Nine;sections, each grounded in research, dialogue, and collaboration with practical examples and;analysis, focus on a theme or dimension that carries critical impacts on a holistic vision of city-;landscape;development, such as resilient communities, ecosystem services and biodiversity,;energy, water, health, and planning and engagement.;This international edited collection will appeal to academics and students engaged in;research involving landscape architecture, architecture, planning, public policy, law, urban;studies, geography, environmental science, and area studies. The Italian Pavilion of the Venice Biennale intends to propose a vision of Italy as a "Nation of Resilient Communities", a country composed of thousands of practices for urban, social and digital innovation that emerge from their isolation, become ecosystems, which can fight the urban revolution of the transition from the erosive, predatory Anthropocene to a generative, responsible Neoanthropocene, in which humanity, after becoming aware of the current development model has generated an unsustainable ecological footprint, takes on the responsibility of adopting new generative behaviours, takes charge of using new approaches, technical tools, takes on a new sustainable development agenda after being the main responsible of the environmental crisis, within a renewed circular alliance between practices, disciplines, institutions and people.

Many urban development-related international initiatives have been established, such as the Making Cities Resilient Campaign and 100 Resilient Cities Programme, aiming to assist governments in enhancing urban resilience. Although the building stock is a significant component of the built environment, little work has been done on the scale of buildings compared to the work developed for the city scale. Resilient buildings can deliver their functions in the face of stresses and shocks, which are the converse of buildings that are vulnerable to the city's weaknesses and hazards. Enhancing the resilience of buildings boosts the urban fabric's resilience at a larger scale. This paper discusses what defines resilient buildings, focusing on existing building retrofits as it offers great opportunity to enhance the resilience of the built environment on a larger scale. It establishes a comprehensive understanding of resilience in buildings that consider both stresses and shocks threatening the built environment. Since resilience is a context-specific approach, the study also takes Jordan as an example and identifies the resilience challenges of its buildings according to 200 local professionals' perception who responded to an online questionnaire.

31. Designing a Pre-Assessment Tool to Support the Achievement of Green Building Certifications

Abstract

The impact of common buildings on climate and environment has prompted people to get involved in the green building standards aimed at implementing rating tools or certifications. Thus, green building rating systems were introduced to the construction industry, and the demand for certified green buildings has increased gradually and succeeded considerably in enhancing people’s environmental awareness. However, the existing certification process has been unsatisfactory in attracting stakeholders and/or professionals who are actively engaged in adopting a rating system. It is because they have faced recurring barriers regarding limited information in understanding the rating process, time-consuming procedures and higher costs, which have a direct influence on pursuing green building rating systems. To promote the achievement of green building certifications within the building industry more successfully, this paper aims at designing a Pre-Assessment Tool (PAT) framework that can help stakeholders and/or professionals engaged in the construction industry to clarify their basic knowledge, timeframe and extra costs needed to activate a green building certification. First, taking the first steps towards the rating tool seems to be complicated because of upfront commitment to understanding the overall rating procedure is required. This conceptual PAT framework can increase basic knowledge of the rating tool and the certification process, mainly in terms of all resources or information of each credit requirements. Second, the assessment process of rating tools is generally known as a “lengthy and time-consuming system”, contributing to unenthusiastic reactions concerning green building projects. The proposed framework can predict the timeframe needed to identify how long it will take for a green project to process each credit requirement and the documentation required from the beginning of the certification process to final approval. Finally, most people often have the initial perception that pursuing green building certification costs more than constructing a non-green building, which makes it more difficult to execute rating tools. To overcome this issue, this PAT will help users to estimate the extra expenses such as certification fees and third-party contributions based on the track of the amount of time it takes to implement the rating tool throughout all the related stages. Also, it can prevent unexpected or hidden costs occurring in the process of assessment. Therefore, this proposed PAT framework can be recommended as an effective method to support the decision-making of inexperienced users and play an important role in promoting green building certification.

Abstract

[EN] Adaptive reuse of historic buildings as museums is an effective strategy for retaining heritage architectures while achieving environmental sustainability objectives. Building adaptation, retrofitting and preserving optimal environments for artwork and exhibit preservation are inherently complex, multifaceted tasks. However, indoor microclimates do not only affect collections; occupants and visitors must also be considered. The aim of this research is to explore whether artwork preservation constraints in reused historic building affect patrons. The authors thereby promote a more comprehensive approach, combining the objectives of exhibit conservation, preservation of heritage buildings and adequate indoor conditions, particularly thermal comfort. Data was gathered using the Post-Occupancy Evaluation process applied to a case study where a combination of micro climate monitoring and questionnaire surveys was carried out over a 12-month period. Results demonstrate that: i) the existing microclimate did not always provide visitors with adequate thermal conditions, showing dissatisfaction during the cooling season (July-September), with average TSV values ranging from -1.03 to -1.13; ii) TSV and PMV values were significantly divergent throughout the year, with TSV mainly included within the ( -1, 0, +1) band and PMV mainly within the (0, -2) band; and iii) questionnaires show that visitor choice of clothing is made according to outdoor conditions, with some gender-related variations in the do level (higher for women), not ensuring thermal comfort inside the museum during the warm season. Results of this research highlight the limitations of Fanger's model when applied to such typology of buildings, emphasising the need for more research in this field.

Abstract

The major disruptive seismic events that have hit Italy in recent years (2009, 2012 and 2016) have started a disciplinary debate regarding the need to tighten up requirements for structural strengthening of structures in historic buildings, in order to avoid the loss of human lives and heritage. The preservation of materials resulting from an increased level of performance would positively affect structural systems, as well as the preservation of historic and cultural values and their transmission to future generations. This article explores the relationship between cultural sustainability and the structural rehabilitation of historic architectures, two key aspects contributing to the achievement of a wider sustainability goal during the restoration and renovation process of historic buildings. The contribution explores how GBC Historic Building®, the first and only rating system assessing and certifying the sustainability level of restoration, rehabilitation, and adaptation of historic constructions, addresses the topics of structural tests and monitoring, as well as reversibility and structural compatibility. Abstract

In recent years, there has been a radically growing attention for optimizing the sustainable design of built environments towards tackling the large-scale environmental concerns of cities. This contribution holistically explores the current status of the construction industry in Auckland, New Zealand, and critically argues the lack of adequate attention to core sustainability principles. Auckland, with its subtropical climate, has been internationally well known for its natural beauty, liveable and walkable urban spaces, and accessible recreational zones. Nevertheless, there are existing challenges with regards to the sustainable energy performance of built environments in Auckland from a construction perspective. Given the need for more widespread green buildings, findings propose moving beyond the conventional targets of sustainable development and suggest urban-scale visions for a sustainable design implementation. The analysis demonstrates the need to incorporate healthy design, smart technologies, emerging digital systems, affordable design concepts, and existing sustainable design endeavors for more promising solutions towards creating liveable urban areas. Abstract

[EN] With attention increasingly shifting toward adaptation and energy upgrade of existing and historic buildings, research on Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) has grown notably in recent years. School buildings are a significant asset to the European building stock and an important field of investigation because of the peculiarities of the end users and the impact of indoor environmental conditions.on their health and productivity. Building on recent literature, particularly the method of Povl Ole Fanger, this research presents the results of a quantitative and qualitative study performed to assess the thermal comfort conditions of a primary school located in a historic building in Villar del Arzobispo, Spain. As the study involves six and seven-year-old pupils, appropriate questionnaires for subjective thermal comfort evaluation were defilled with the pedagogical support of the teachers, who also took part in the research and helped deliver the surveys to the children. The Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) and Percentage of Dissatisfied (PD) were then calculated for the evaluation of thermal comfort from measurements and questionnaires, for both pupils and teachers, using the classroom as a sample size. The results show a difference between pupils' and teachers' subjective opinions, with the children displaying a higher and more-difficult-to-reach threshold for indoor thermal comfort.

Abstract

Three correlated researches try to give operative answers to the problem of defining procedures and tools for a correct survey and retrofit actions for the existing building stock.
