We investigate how the stellar rotational support changes as a function of spatially resolved stellar population age ($\rm D_n4000$) and relative central stellar surface density ($\Delta \Sigma_1$) for MaNGA isolated/central disk galaxies. We find that the galaxy rotational support $\lambda_{R_\mathrm{e}}$ varies smoothly as a function of $\Delta \Sigma_1$ and $\rm D_n4000$. $\rm D_n4000$ vs. $\Delta \Sigma_1$ follows a "J-shape", with $\lambda_{R_\mathrm{e}}$ contributing to the scatters. In this "J-shaped" pattern rotational support increases with central $\rm D_n4000$ when $\Delta \Sigma_1$ is low but decreases with $\Delta \Sigma_1$ when $\Delta \Sigma_1$ is high. Restricting attention to low-$\Delta \Sigma_1$ (i.e, large-radius) galaxies, we suggest that the trend of increasing rotational support with $\rm D_n4000$ for these objects is produced by a mix of two different processes, a primary trend characterized by growth in $\lambda_{R_\mathrm{e}}$ along with mass through gas accretion, on top of which disturbance episodes are overlaid, which reduce rotational support and trigger increased star formation. An additional finding is that star forming galaxies with low $\Delta \Sigma_1$ have relatively larger radii than galaxies with higher $\Delta \Sigma_1$ at fixed stellar mass. Assuming that these relative radii rankings are preserved while galaxies are star forming then implies clear evolutionary paths in central $\rm D_n4000$ vs. $\Delta \Sigma_1$. The paper closes with comments on the implications that these paths have for the evolution of pseudo-bulges vs. classical-bulges. The utility of using $\rm D_n4000$-$\Delta \Sigma_1$ to study $\lambda_{R_\mathrm{e}}$ reinforces the notion that galaxy kinematics correlate both with structure and with stellar-population state, and indicates the importance of a multi-dimensional description for understanding bulge and galaxy evolution., Comment: 24 pages, 22 figures (including Appendix), accepted for publication in MNRAS

Using the largest sample of galaxies observed with an optical integral field unit (IFU, the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey, $\sim$10000 targets), we derive the radial distribution of the physical properties obtained from the stellar continuum and the ionized-gas emission lines. Given the large sample, we are able to explore the impact of the total stellar mass and morphology by averaging those radial distributions for different bins of both global properties. We use a piece-wise analysis to characterize the slopes of the gradients from those properties at different galactocentric distances. In general we find that most of the properties -- derived from both the stellar continuum and the ionized gas emission lines -- exhibit a negative gradient with a secondary impact by global properties such as the total stellar mass or morphology. Our results confirm the intimate interplay between the properties of the stellar component and those of the ionized gas at local (kpc) scales in order to set the observed gradients. Furthermore, the resemblance of the gradients for similar global properties (in particular for the stellar parameters) indicates statistical similar histories of star formation and chemical enrichment with an initial radial gas distribution following the potential of the galaxy., Comment: 58 pages. 59 Figures. Star formation rate density, $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$, has shown a remarkable correlation with both components of the baryonic mass at kpc scales (i.e., the stellar mass density, and the molecular gas mass density; $\Sigma_{\ast}$, and $\Sigma_{\rm mol}$, respectively) for galaxies in the nearby Universe. In this study we propose an empirical relation between $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ and the baryonic mass surface density ($\Sigma_{\rm b}$ =$\Sigma_{\rm mol,Av}$ + $\Sigma_{\ast}$; where $\Sigma_{\rm mol,Av}$ is the molecular gas density derived from the optical extinction, Av) at kpc scales using the spatially-resolved properties of the MaNGA survey - the largest sample of galaxies observed via Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS, $\sim$ 8400 objects). We find that $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ tightly correlates with $\Sigma_{\rm b}$. Furthermore, we derive an empirical relation between the $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ and a second degree polynomial of $\Sigma_{\rm b}$ yielding a one-to-one relation between these two observables. Both, $\Sigma_{\rm b}$ and its polynomial form show a stronger correlation and smaller scatter with respect to $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ than the relations derived using the individual components of $\Sigma_{\rm b}$. Our results suggest that indeed these three parameters are physically correlated, suggesting a scenario in which the two components of the baryonic mass regulate the star-formation activity at kpc scales., Comment: 10 pages, 6 Figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

RW Aur is a young binary star that experienced a deep dimming in 2010-11 in component A and a second even deeper dimming from summer 2014 to summer 2016. We present new unresolved multi-band photometry during the 2014-16 eclipse, new emission line spectroscopy before and during the dimming, archive infrared photometry between 2014-15, as well as an overview of literature data. Spectral observations were carried out with the Fibre-fed RObotic Dual-beam Optical Spectrograph on the Liverpool Telescope. Photometric monitoring was done with the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network and James Gregory Telescope. Our photometry shows that RW Aur dropped in brightness to R = 12.5 in March 2016. In addition to the long-term dimming trend, RW Aur is variable on time scales as short as hours. The short-term variation is most likely due to an unstable accretion flow. This, combined with the presence of accretion-related emission lines in the spectra suggest that accretion flows in the binary system are at least partially visible during the eclipse. The equivalent width of [O I] increases by a factor of ten in 2014, coinciding with the dimming event, confirming previous reports. The blue-shifted part of the $H\alpha$ profile is suppressed during the eclipse. In combination with the increase in mid-infrared brightness during the eclipse reported in the literature and seen in WISE archival data, and constraints on the geometry of the disk around RW Aur A we arrive at the conclusion that the obscuring screen is part of a wind emanating from the inner disk., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

We observed the lenticular galaxy NGC 3998 with the Mitchell Integral-Field Spectrograph and extracted line-of-sight velocity distributions out to 3 half-light radii. We constructed collisionless orbit models in order to constrain NGC 3998's dark and visible structure, using kinematics from both the Mitchell and SAURON instruments. We find NGC 3998 to be almost axisymmetric, seen nearly face on with a flattened intrinsic shape - i.e., a face-on fast-rotator. We find an I-band mass-to-light ratio of $4.7_{-0.45}^{+0.32}$ in good agreement with previous spectral fitting results for this galaxy. Our best-fit orbit model shows a both a bulge and a disc component, with a non-negligible counter-rotating component also evident. We find that relatively little dark matter is needed to model this galaxy, with an inferred dark mass fraction of just $(7.1^{+8.1}_{-7.1})\%$ within one half-light radius., Comment: 17 pages, 21 figures, accepted by MNRAS
