Background: Cigarette smokers have elevated cardiovascular risk factors, which contributes significantly to mortality. Although social media is a potential avenue to deliver smoking interventions, its role in health promotion among smokers remains relatively unexplored.Objective: To examine the uptake and impact of health-related social media use in cigarette smokers.Methods: Using data from the 2017–2020 Health Information National Trends Survey, we evaluated differences in health-related social media use between smokers and nonsmokers. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to examine the association between social media use and positive health behaviors.Results: We included 1863 current smokers and 13,560 nonsmokers; Most participants were women (51.0%), White (64.6%), and 49.2% were aged ≥50 years. Smokers who used ≥1 social media site for health-related purposes in the past year were significantly more likely to meet the guideline recommendations for: (i) weekly physical activity (AOR 2.00, 95% CI 1.23–3.24), (ii) daily vegetable intake (AOR 2.48, 95% CI 1.10–5.59), and (iii) weekly strength training (AOR 1.80, 95% CI 1.10–2.94). However, the odds of reporting intentions to quit smoking (AOR 1.81, 95% CI 0.98–3.34) and attempts at smoking cessation (AOR 1.68, 95% CI 0.90–3.12) did not differ by health-related social media use.Conclusion: Smokers use social media for health-related purposes at comparable rates to nonsmokers. While our findings indicate that these platforms present a novel opportunity for health promotion among smokers, future research exploring the utility of social media in smoking cessation is crucial. AbstractPurposeDesignSample/MethodsFindingsImplicationsTo examine the associations between state positive psychological well-being (PPWB) constructs, mood, and quality of life (QOL) in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) survivors.The study was a secondary analysis of cross-sectional data.We analyzed self-report data assessing positive affect, flourishing, QOL, depression and anxiety, and PTSD symptoms from 158 allogeneic HSCT recipients at day-100 post-transplant enrolled in supportive care studies.Univariate analysis showed that factors associated with greater levels of various state PPWB constructs include older age, disability status, greater social support, and presence of graft-versus-host disease. Multivariate analysis showed that state PPWB constructs—greater levels of positive affect and flourishing—were significantly associated with better QOL and lower PTSD, anxiety, and depression symptomatology.Our findings suggest that longitudinal studies are needed to examine the links between state PPWB constructs and HSCT outcomes, which may inform population specific interventions and opportunities to improve outcomes. Background: Despite the association between peer support interventions and improved patient-reported outcomes (PROs) across cancer populations, there is a lack of structured peer support interventions for patients with hematologic malignancies undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT)., Objective: To test the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of a novel five-session, phone-delivered peer support intervention (STEPP: Supporting Transplant Experiences with Peer Program) for improving quality of life (QOL) and reducing psychological distress in patients undergoing HSCT., Methods: This single-center pilot randomized clinical trial (RCT) will compare the STEPP intervention to usual transplant care among 90 patients hospitalized for HSCT. Eligible participants include adults (age ≥ 18 years) with hematologic malignancies hospitalized for autologous or allogeneic HSCT. The STEPP intervention provides informational, emotional, and practical support. To test the primary aim of intervention feasibility, we have established a priori benchmarks of 60 % enrollment of eligible patients and 60 % completion of at least 3 out of 5 intervention sessions among those randomized to STEPP. Acceptability will be assessed using the Client Satisfaction Questionnaire, with scores ≥3.0/4.0 indicating greater intervention acceptability. To test the secondary aim of preliminary efficacy, we will examine changes in PROs (e.g., anxiety symptoms and QOL) from pre- to post-intervention., Discussion: This pilot RCT of a structured, phone-delivered peer support intervention tailored to the needs of patients preparing to undergo HSCT will elucidate the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of the STEPP intervention.
