Working temperatures, thermal insulation performance, and life span of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are primarily influenced by their high-temperature stability, thermal expansion coefficients (TECs), thermal conductivity, and fracture toughness. To address the limitations of current zirconate- and tantalate-based oxides, dual-phase zirconate/tantalate high-entropy ceramics (HECs) are designed and synthesized to improve their thermal and mechanical properties. The combined effects of high entropy, high concentrations of oxygen vacancies, and relatively low phonon velocity result in glass-like thermal conductivity, with a minimum value of 1.55 W m−1 K−1 at 1200 °C. The high TECs (10.6–10.9 × 10−6 K−1 at 1400 °C) and exceptional high-temperature stability demonstrate that these materials can withstand 1300 °C for more than 300 h, significantly surpassing the performance of traditional yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ). Compared with YSZ (3.6 MPa m1/2) and YTaO4 (2.5 MPa m1/2), the increments in fracture toughness (4.4 MPa m1/2) of dual-phase zirconate/tantalate HECs are as high as 22.2% and 76.0%, respectively. It is evident that the designed dual-phase zirconate/tantalate HECs can effectively promote thermal properties and fracture toughness, positioning them as the next-generation TBCs with high operating temperatures and outstanding thermal insulation performance.

Abstract Reductive amination by amine dehydrogenases is a green and sustainable process that produces only water as the by-product. In this study, a continuous flow process was designed utilizing a packed bed reactor filled with co-immobilized amine dehydrogenase wh84 and glucose dehydrogenase for the highly efficient biocatalytic synthesis of chiral amino alcohols. The immobilized amine dehydrogenase wh84 exhibited better thermo-, pH and solvent stability with high activity recovery. (S)-2-aminobutan-1-ol was produced in up to 99% conversion and 99% ee in the continuous flow processes, and the space-time yields were up to 124.5 g L-1 d-1. The continuous reactions were also extended to 48 h affording up to 91.8% average conversions. This study showcased the important potential to sustainable production of chiral amino alcohols in continuous flow processes.

In this investigation, gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) and gas tungsten arc welding with trailing ultrasonic rotating extrusion (U-RE-GTAW) were applied to 7075 aluminum alloys. Qualitative comparisons and analyses were carried out to investigate the effects of the ultrasonic rotary extrusion-assisted technology on GTAW processes. The weld joints fabricated by GTAW and U-RE-GTAW were examined using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. Concurrently, the tensile strength and fatigue characteristics were assessed at ambient temperature. The experimental outcomes indicated that the U-RE-GTAW process mitigated porosity within the weld region and substantially augmented dislocation density, while concurrently achieving a notable reduction in grain size and an increase in the volume fraction of secondary phases due to the synergistic effects of ultrasonic oscillation and rotational extrusion. The enhancement in tensile and fatigue resistance of the welded joint was attributed to the strengthening mechanisms associated with these microstructural alterations. Specifically, the ultimate tensile strength exhibited a 20.4% increase, and the elongation at break was elevated by 46.3%. At stress amplitudes of 190 MPa, 160 MPa, and 100 MPa, the fatigue strength of the welded joints was enhanced by 67%, 55%, and 32%, respectively. A quantitative analysis was conducted to elucidate the impact of diverse strengthening mechanisms on the welded joints. It was concluded that dislocation strengthening is the predominant factor contributing to the superior performance of the U-RE-GTAW specimens.

The rubidium clock，as the core part of the Beidou satellite navigation and positioning system，mainly provides high-precision time reference signals. Its accuracy will directly affect the performance of the Beidou system. The high abundance isotope rubidium 87 is the core working material of rubidium clocks. Its abundance is an important factor affecting the accuracy of atomic clocks. The high-abundance rubidium-87 isotopes required for the separation of rubidium bells in the United States and Russia，two major isotope producing countries，use electromagnetic separation technology. At present，the production of rubidium 87 isotopes for electromagnetic isotope separation in China can only meet a small portion of the demand. With the arrival of the 5G era，the demand for high abundance rubidium isotopes in fields such as aerospace and chip clocks has significantly increased. It will further increase the gap in domestic rubidium isotopes. It is expected that the demand for rubidium 87 will reach several hundred grams to several kilograms per year in the future. By analyzing the current development status of the quantum time-frequency field and understanding the demand of rubidium clocks for rubidium 87 isotopes in the quantum time-frequency field，it provides guidance for the industrial development and ideas of electromagnetic separation and preparation of rubidium isotopes in the future.Promoting the industrial development of rubidium 87 isotope separation and preparation as soon as possible. Through technological breakthroughs and large-scale construction，separation efficiency can be improved and production costs can be reduced. This will provide important guarantees for the autonomous control of rubidium 87 isotopes.

Abstract The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) holds significance for investigating Earth’s surface processes. However, due to rugged terrain, forest canopy, and snow accumulation, open-access Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) exhibit considerable noise, resulting in low accuracy and pronounced data inconsistency. Furthermore, the glacier regions within the QTP undergo substantial changes, necessitating updates. This study employs a fusion of open-access DEMs and high-accuracy photons from the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2). Additionally, snow cover and canopy heights are considered, and an ensemble learning fusion model is presented to harness the complementary information in the multi-sensor elevation observations. This innovative approach results in the creation of HQTP30, the most accurate representation of the 2021 QTP terrain. Comparative analysis with high-resolution imagery, UAV-derived DEMs, control points, and ICESat-2 highlights the advantages of HQTP30. Notably, in non-glacier regions, HQTP30 achieved a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 0.71 m, while in glacier regions, it reduced the MAE by 4.35 m compared to the state-of-the-art Copernicus DEM (COPDEM), demonstrating its versatile applicability.

AlCoCrFeNi2.1 eutectic high-entropy alloy (EHEA), with its distinctive heterogeneous structure, not only overcomes the drawback of insufficient strength of FCC single-phase high-entropy alloys (HEAs), but also overcomes the drawback of insufficient ductility of BCC single-phase HEAs, making it a promising candidate for engineering application. In addition, EHEAs possessing excellent castability are considered to be suitable for additive manufacturing (AM). The AlCoCrFeNi2.1 EHEA prepared by direct energy deposition (DED) exhibits a dual-phase structure consisting of FCC(L12) and BCC(B2) phases. With the increase of deposition height, its morphology transforms from columnar and dendrite structures to lamellar structure. Furthermore, the tensile strength and yield strength of the DED-ed EHEA samples increase, while the ductility decreases with the increase of deposition height. Especially, the middle region of the DED-ed samples achieves a good strength-ductility balance. The lamellar structure composed of soft FCC(L12) phase and hard BCC(B2) phase produces a hetero deformation induced (HDI) hardening, which improves the strength of the samples and promotes plastic deformation. The FCC(L12)/BCC(B2) phase interfaces not only hinder the movement of a large number of dislocations and cause dislocation pile-up, but also allow some dislocations to slip across, which helps to plastic co-deformation of two phases in the EHEA samples. This work provides useful guidance for the performance improvement of EHEAs using laser additive manufacturing.

Abstract Background The emerging of the C2 isthmus screw fixation technique is gaining popularity in the setting of atlantoaxial dislocation or other conditions requiring fixation of C2. However, the biomechanical stability of this fixation is poorly understood. Purpose To compare and elucidate the biomechanical stability of C2 pedicle screw (C2PS), C2 isthmus screw (C2IS) and C2 short isthmus screw (C2SIS) fixation techniques in atlantoaxial dislocation (AAD). Method A three-dimensional finite element model (FEM) from occiput to C3 was established and validated from a healthy male volunteer. Three FEMs, C1 pedicle screw (PS)-C2PS, C1PS-C2IS, C1PS-C2SIS were also constructed. The range of motion (ROM) and the maximum von Mises stress under flexion, extension, lateral bending and axial rotation loading were analyzed and compared. The pullout strength of the three fixations for C2 was also evaluated. Result C1PS-C2IS model showed the greatest decrease in ROM with flexion, extension, lateral bending and axial rotation. C1PS-C2PS model showed the least ROM reduction under all loading conditions than both C2IS and C2SIS. The C1PS-C2PS model had the largest von Mises stress on the screw under all directions followed by C1PS-C2SIS, and lastly the C1PS-C2IS. Under axial rotation and lateral bending loading, the three models showed the maximum and minimum von Mises stress on the screw respectively. The stress of the three models was mainly located in the connection of the screw and rod. Overall, the maximum screw pullout strength for C2PS, C2IS and C2SIS were 729.41N, 816.62N, 640.54N respectively. Conclusion In patients with atlantoaxial dislocations, the C2IS fixation provided comparable stability, with no significant stress concentration. Furthermore, the C2IS had sufficient pullout strength when compared with C2PS and C2SIS. C2 isthmus screw fixation may be a biomechanically favourable option in cases with AAD. However, future clinical trials are necessary for the evaluation of the clinical outcomes of this technique.

Abstract Extensive studies demonstrate that macrophage response plays an important role in regulating angiogenesis via a paracrine way, which is crucial for skin wound repair. This study isolated and characterized nanosized exosomes from differently polarized macrophages (MΦ), including M0 (naïve), M1 (pro-inflammatory), and M2 (anti-inflammatory) macrophages, and further assessed their impacts on angiogenesis and skin regeneration. Our results indicated that compared to M0 and M1 counterparts, M2 macrophage-derived exosomes (M2-Exos) exhibited a pronounced ability to promote angiogenic ability of of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) by enhancing expression of angiogenic genes and proteins, increasing cell migration, and improving tubulogenesis. Bioinformatics analyses suggested that the distinct angiogenic potentials of three MΦ-Exos might be attributed to the differentially expressed angiogenesis-related miRNAs and their target genes such as Stat3, Smad 2, and Smad4. Moreover, these isolated MΦ-Exos were integrated with gelatine methacrylate (GelMA) hydrogels to achieve the sustained delivery at murine full-thickness cutaneous wound sites. In vivo results showed that Gel/M2-Exos significantly augmented angiogenesis, accelerated re-epithelialization, promoted collagen maturity, thereby promoting wound healing. In contrary, Gel/M1-Exos showed the opposite effects. Our findings provided compelling evidence that the polarization status of macrophages significantly affected angiogenesis and wound healing via the miRNA cargos of their derived exosomes. Moreover, this study opens a new avenue for developing nano-scale, cell-free exosome-based therapies in treating cutaneous wounds. Graphical abstract

Abstract Recently, the Visual Image Transformer (ViT) has revolutionized various domains in computer vision. The transfer of pre‐trained ViT models on large‐scale datasets has proven to be a promising method for downstream tasks. However, traditional transfer methods introduce numerous additional parameters in transformer blocks, posing new challenges in learning downstream tasks. This article proposes an efficient transfer method from the perspective of neural Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) to address this issue. On the one hand, the residual connections in the transformer layers can be interpreted as the numerical integration of differential equations. Therefore, the transformer block can be described as two explicit Euler method equations. By dynamically learning the step size in the explicit Euler equation, a highly lightweight method for transferring the transformer block is obtained. On the other hand, a new learnable neural memory ODE block is proposed by taking inspiration from the self‐inhibition mechanism in neural systems. It increases the diversity of dynamical behaviours of the neurons to transfer the head block efficiently and enhances non‐linearity simultaneously. Experimental results in image classification demonstrate that the proposed approach can effectively transfer ViT models and outperform state‐of‐the‐art methods.

Summary: Pyroptosis, a pro-inflammatory form of programmed cell death, is crucial for host defense against pathogens and danger signals. Proteolytic cleavage of gasdermin proteins B–E (GSDMB–GSDME) is well established as a trigger for pyroptosis, but the intracellular activation mechanism of GSDMA remains elusive. Here, we demonstrate that severe starvation induces pyroptosis through phosphorylation-induced activation of GSDMA. Nutrient stresses stimulate GSDMA activation via phosphorylation mediated by Unc-51-like autophagy-activating kinase 1 (ULK1). Phosphorylation of Ser353 on human GSDMA by ULK1 or the phospho-mimetic Ser353Asp mutant of GSDMA liberates GSDMA from auto-inhibition, facilitating its membrane targeting and initiation of pyroptosis. To further validate the significance of GSDMA phosphorylation, we generated a constitutively active mutant Ser354Asp of mouse Gsdma, which induced skin inflammation and hyperplasia in mice, reminiscent of phenotypes with activated Gsdma. This study uncovers phosphorylation of GSDMA as a mechanism underlying pyroptosis initiation and cellular response to nutrient stress.

Uremic Clearance Granule (UCG) is a traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) that has been recognized as potentially effective treatment for diabetic nephropathy (DN). However, the chemical composition and the hypoglycemic ingredients of UCG remain unclear. In this experiment, a magnetic ligand fishing protocol combined with HPLC coupled Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (HPLC-FT-ICR-MS) technology was developed to screen and identify α-Glucosidase inhibitors from UCG. First, constituents of UCG was identified by HPLC-FT-ICR-MS. Next, α-Glucosidase coated Fe3O4@SiO2@NH2 (Fe3O4@SiO2@NH2@α-Glucosidase) nano composites was synthesized. The essential parameters (concentration of Glutaraldehyde (GA), ratio of Fe3O4@SiO2@NH2 to enzyme, crosslinking time and immobilization time) were optimized to obtain maximum enzyme activity and the performance of immobilized enzyme was compared with that of free enzyme. The α-Glucosidase inhibitory activities were then evaluated using autodock and the 4-Nitrophenyl-α-D-glucopyranoside (pNPG) method. As a result, 142 compounds were identified were identified by comparing the retention time, molecular ions and fragmentation behaviors with the reference compounds or the in-house database. 20 possible α-Glucosidase activity inhibitory components were identified using HPLC-FT-ICR-MS. Molecular docking and inhibition studies showed that 4 compuunds including Limonexic acid, Sanggenol A, Glabrone, Matrine were more likely to stronger α-Glucosidase inhibitory activities than acarbose. In conclusion, the proposed approach, which combined highly specific screening with HPLC-FT-ICR-MS, provided a powerful platform for discovering bioactive components from multi-component and multi-target traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs).

IntroductionSystemic lupus erythematosus is a multi-faceted autoimmune disorder of complex etiology. Pre-pubertal onset of pediatric systemic lupus erythematosus (pSLE) is uncommon and should raise suspicion for a genetic driver of disease. Autosomal recessive p40phox deficiency is a rare immunologic disorder characterized by defective but not abolished NADPH oxidase activity with residual production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by phagocytic cells.Case presentationWe report the case of a now 18-year-old female with pSLE onset at 7 years of age. She presented with recurrent fever and malar rash. Aspects of her immune dysregulation over time have included typical pSLE features including production of autoantibodies, hematologic manifestations, and hypocomplementemia, as well as chronic suppurative skin lesions and recurrent infections. Genetic analysis revealed biallelic pathogenic variants in NCF4 resulting in p40phox deficiency. Comprehensive NADPH oxidase activity studies confirmed significantly decreased production of reactive oxygen species, confirming the cellular phenotype seen in p40phox deficient patients.ConclusionsHere, we present a patient with pSLE harboring biallelic variants in NCF4. Our patient represents a unique clinical presentation of severe onset autoimmunity in the setting of a rare inborn error of immunity affecting NADPH oxidase activity. This case underscores the need to consider genetic causes of pSLE in cases of pre-pubertal onset and atypical disease.

In this study, boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) were utilized as covering and reinforcing materials owing to their extraordinary insulation and extremely high hydrophobicity. The gas–liquid–solid annealing process was used to manufacture the BNNT stainless-steel filter, with a 120 mesh stainless steel filter serving as the substrate and B2O3 as the raw material. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the average diameter of the nanotubes was 0.40 μm. The BNNTs were bamboo shaped, and the BNNT stainless-steel filter was superhydrophobic, with a water contact angle was 150.49°. The materials demonstrated good separation performance, as indicated by the separation results obtained under four different test conditions (0 and 0.3 MPa, 3 and 10 mL/min). The solid–liquid separation effect of the BNNT stainless-steel filter was better than that of the Teflon filter. In oil–water separation experiments with varying water contents (1.2 and 5.8 wt%), the BNNT stainless-steel filter was more hydrophobic. Based on the results, the role of the hydrodynamic method in the separation of two superhydrophobic materials is discussed. The method introduced in this study can serve as a reference for the application of other filtration separation technologies. Furthermore, the superior separation performance of the superhydrophobic BNNT stainless-steel filter may enable the quick, effective, and continuous collection of water contaminated with oil, giving it a wide range of potential applications.

Abstract Background A reduction in total lumbar range of motion (ROM) after lumbar fusion may offset the increase in intradiscal pressure (IDP) and facet joint force (FJF) caused by the abnormally increased ROM at adjacent segments. This study aimed to determine a relative total lumbar ROM rather than an ideal adjacent segment ROM to guide postoperative waist activities and further delay adjacent segment degeneration (ASD). Methods An intact L1-S1 finite element model was constructed and validated. Based on this, a surgical model was created to allow the simulation of L4/5 transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF). Under the maximum total L1-S1 ROM, the ROM, IDP, and FJF of each adjacent segment between the intact and TLIF models were compared to explore the biomechanical influence of lumbar fusion on adjacent segments. Subsequently, the functional relationship between total L1-S1 ROM and IDP or total L1-S1 ROM and FJF was fitted in the TLIF model to calculate the relative total L1-S1 ROMs without an increase in IDP and FJF. Results Compared with those of the intact model, the ROM, IDP, and FJF of the adjacent segments in the TLIF model increased by 12.6-28.9%, 0.1-6.8%, and 0-134.2%, respectively. As the total L1-S1 ROM increased, the IDP and FJF of each adjacent segment increased by varying degrees. The relative total L1-S1 ROMs in the TLIF model were 11.03°, 12.50°, 12.14°, and 9.82° in flexion, extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation, respectively. Conclusions The relative total L1-S1 ROMs after TLIF were determined, which decreased by 19.6-29.3% compared to the preoperative ones. Guiding the patients to perform postoperative waist activities within these specific ROMs, an increase in the IDP and FJF of adjacent segments may be effectively offset, thereby alleviating ASD.

Abstract Background The spinal inflammatory signal often spreads to distant segments, accompanied by widespread pain symptom under neuropathological conditions. Multiple cytokines are released into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), potentially inducing the activation of an inflammatory cascade at remote segments through CSF flow. However, the detailed alteration of CSF in neuropathic pain and its specific role in widespread pain remain obscure. Methods A chronic constriction injury of the infraorbital nerve (CCI-ION) model was constructed, and pain-related behavior was observed on the 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th days post surgery, in both vibrissa pads and hind paws. CSF from CCI-ION rats was transplanted to naïve rats through intracisternal injection, and thermal and mechanical allodynia were measured in hind paws. The alteration of inflammatory cytokines in CCI-ION’s CSF was detected using an antibody array and bioinformatic analysis. Pharmacological intervention targeting the changed cytokine in the CSF and downstream signaling was performed to evaluate its role in widespread pain. Results CCI-ION induced local pain in vibrissa pads together with widespread pain in hind paws. CCI-ION’s CSF transplantation, compared with sham CSF, contributed to vibrissa pad pain and hind paw pain in recipient rats. Among the measured cytokines, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and leptin were increased in CCI-ION’s CSF, while interleukin-13 (IL-13) was significantly reduced. Furthermore, the concentration of CSF IL-6 was correlated with nerve injury extent, which gated the occurrence of widespread pain. Both astrocytes and microglia were increased in remote segments of the CCI-ION model, while the inhibition of astrocytes in remote segments, but not microglia, significantly alleviated widespread pain. Mechanically, astroglial signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) in remote segments were activated by CSF IL-6, the inhibition of which significantly mitigated widespread pain in CCI-ION. Conclusion IL-6 was induced in the CSF of the CCI-ION model, triggering widespread pain via activating astrocyte STAT3 signal in remote segments. Therapies targeting IL-6/STAT3 signaling might serve as a promising strategy for the widespread pain symptom under neuropathological conditions. Graphical abstract

Abstract Disparities in data underlying clinical genomic interpretation is an acknowledged problem, but there is a paucity of data demonstrating it. The All of Us Research Program is collecting data including whole-genome sequences, health records, and surveys for at least a million participants with diverse ancestry and access to healthcare, representing one of the largest biomedical research repositories of its kind. Here, we examine pathogenic and likely pathogenic variants that were identified in the All of Us cohort. The European ancestry subgroup showed the highest overall rate of pathogenic variation, with 2.26% of participants having a pathogenic variant. Other ancestry groups had lower rates of pathogenic variation, including 1.62% for the African ancestry group and 1.32% in the Latino/Admixed American ancestry group. Pathogenic variants were most frequently observed in genes related to Breast/Ovarian Cancer or Hypercholesterolemia. Variant frequencies in many genes were consistent with the data from the public gnomAD database, with some notable exceptions resolved using gnomAD subsets. Differences in pathogenic variant frequency observed between ancestral groups generally indicate biases of ascertainment of knowledge about those variants, but some deviations may be indicative of differences in disease prevalence. This work will allow targeted precision medicine efforts at revealed disparities.

Abstract Detecting and analyzing lung lesion regions using artificial intelligence is of great significance in the medical diagnosis of lung CT images, which can substantially improve the efficiency of doctors. However, segmentation of the inflammatory region in the CT image of the lung remains challenging due to the varied sizes, blurry local details, irregular shapes, and limited sizes of datasets. Faced with these challenges, this paper proposes a novel lung lesion segmentation network that incorporates two feature extraction branches to achieve a balance of speed and accuracy. We first design a context branch (CB) to preserve the scale-invariant global context information by the transformer-like module. Besides, a shallow detail branch (DB) based on a deep aggregation pyramid (DAP) module is designed to provide detailed information. Extensive experiments are conducted on two datasets, including the public COVID-19 dataset and a private dataset. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art methods. Moreover, the trade-off between accuracy and inference speed is achieved.

Micro-expression (ME) is spontaneous, rapid, and subtle facial mechanism that can reveal the concealed emotions. However, the short duration, low motion intensity, and small dataset of MEs make the extraction and learning of features from ME samples more challenging for existing micro-expression recognition (MER) methods. To address this issue, we propose a novel decomposition MER method, called AST+SVMNet, and the primary architecture of our method integrates improved fusion attention and spatio-temporal convolutional neural network, achieving efficient MER through feature transfer to SVM. This method consists of four main components: feature extraction, fusion attention, spatio-temporal feature extraction, and feature transfer modules. In the feature extraction part, we designed a novel ME texture feature called the image sequence difference feature (ISDF). It mitigates the negative impact of optical flow calculation noise on MER task when applying optical flow features simultaneously. In the fusion attention part, we designed a fusion attention module (FAM) that reduces the extraction of redundant information for ME samples, optimizing the extraction of finer-grained spatio-temporal information. In the third part, we reduced the parameter count through 2D and 3D Inception Modules without compromising the performance of spatio-temporal feature extraction. In the feature transfer part, we achieved rapid and efficient MER by training the SVM classifier through feature transfer on high-dimensional spatio-temporal features. Finally, the performance of our proposed method on four publicly available spontaneous ME datasets surpasses that of existing baseline methods in MER. In addition, through effectiveness experiments and ablation studies, we demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed texture feature ISDF and the MER method AST+SVMNet.

Abstract A miniaturised integrated passive device (IPD) balun design with low insertion loss and balanced amplitude and phase is proposed for Wi‐Fi/Bluetooth applications. In this design, a novel topology based on the modified T‐type filter structure is introduced to offset the parasitic and coupling effects that cause poor balance in IPD design. The proposed balun design is fabricated on a GaAs substrate. The measured insertion loss is lower than 0.9 dB and the measured return loss is >16 dB in the frequency range of 2.2–2.9 GHz. The measured results of amplitude and phase show rather minor imbalances, which are lower than ±0.67 dB and ±1.8° respectively. The fabricated device size is 0.9 mm × 0.6 mm only.

Abstract Background Soy isoflavones (SI) is a natural bioactive substance exhibiting beneficial effects on human health. This study aims to elucidate the therapeutic potential of SI in the treatment of osteosarcoma (OS) and to investigate the underlying mechanisms, particularly focusing on mitophagy. Methods The effects of SI on the proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and invasion of U2OS cells were analyzed. Mitophagy was assessed through multiple parameters: mitochondrial autophagosomes, mitochondrial membrane potential, autophagy-related proteins, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and oxygen consumption rate (OCR). Protein levels related to apoptosis, autophagy, and the AKT/mTOR pathway were analyzed using western blot. The therapeutic efficacy of SI was further identified using a mouse tumor xenograft model. Cell apoptosis and proliferation in tumor xenografts were detected by TUNEL staining and immunohistochemistry (IHC), respectively. Results SI dose-dependently suppressed the viability, colony formation, migration, and invasion of U2OS cells, and enhanced the apoptosis. SI also dose-dependently induced mitophagy in OS cells, evidenced by an increase in autophagosomes and ROS levels, a decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential and OCR, and concomitant changes in autophagy-related proteins. Mdivi-1, an inhibitor of mitophagy, reversed the anti-tumor effects of SI on U2OS cells. In addition, SI blocked the AKT/mTOR pathway in U2OS cells. SC-79, an AKT agonist, reversed the effect of SI on inducing mitophagy. Moreover, SI also promoted cell apoptosis and mitophagy in tumor xenografts in vivo. Conclusions SI induces mitophagy in OS cells by blocking the AKT/mTOR pathway, contributing to the inhibition of OS.

Understanding the response of land surface temperature (LST) to urbanization is important for coping with urban warming. However, few studies have discussed the impact of twin-city integration on LST. Here, we explored the relationship between the twin-city integration and LST over the Xi'an-Xianyang Metropolitan Area (XXMA) using the local contour tree algorithm during 2000–2020. Results indicate that: 1) The urban integration of XXMA is obvious, and the spatial scope of XXMA converges toward the Weihe River between the two cities. Besides, its structure tends to be more complex, which develops from 3 levels and 8 centers to 10 levels and 33 centers from 2000 to 2020. 2) The heat islands of XXMA tend to connect and reach the maximum area of 547.43 km2 in 2015, while the LST evolution in two cities is not synchronized. The LST contour tree of Xi'an increased to 6 levels and 26 centers in 2000–2015 and simplified to 5 levels and 17 centers in 2020, while it increased from 1 to 4 levels in Xianyang in 2000–2020. 3) Synergistic effects exist between urban expansion and LST evolution. The correlation coefficient and bivariate Moran's I between nighttime light (NTL) and LST are greater than 0.35, indicating NTL and LST are correlated and have pleasurable spatial consistency. The high–high agglomeration of NTL and LST increases by 132% in area over the 20-year period, showing a trend toward integration. The study results can provide a scientific basis for thermal environment management and urban climate improvement in XXMA.

Background and objective Hepatic portal venous gas(HPVG) represents a rare radiographic phenomenon frequently linked to intestinal necrosis, historically deemed to need immediate surgical intervention. The pivotal query arises about the imperative of urgent surgery when a patient manifests HPVG after gastrointestinal surgery. This inquiry seeks to elucidate whether emergent surgical measures remain a requisite in such cases.Methods The investigation into 14 cases of HPVG after gastrointestinal procedures was conducted through a comprehensive review of relevant literature. This methodological approach contributes to a nuanced understanding of HPVG occurrences following gastrointestinal surgery, informing clinical considerations and potential therapeutic strategies.Results Among the 14 patients, 12 recovered and 2 died. 6 patients underwent surgical exploration, 4 with negative findings and recovered. 8 cases received conservative treatment, resulting in improvement for 5, and 1 initially treated conservatively, revealed perforation during later surgical exploration, leading to improvement, 1 case ended in mortality.Conclusion After gastrointestinal surgery, in Computed Tomography (CT) imaging, the coexistence of HPVG and gastrointestinal dilatation, without signs of peritoneal irritation on abdominal examination, may suggest HPVG due to acute gastrointestinal injury, intestinal gas, and displacement of gas-producing bacteria. These patients can be managed conservatively under close supervision. In cases where HPVG coexists with gastrointestinal dilatation and Pneumatosis intestinalis (PI) without signs of peritoneal irritation, conservative treatment may be continued under close supervision. However, if progressive exacerbation occurs despite close monitoring and the aforementioned treatments, timely surgical exploration is deemed necessary. When HPVG is combined with signs of peritoneal irritation, prompt laparotomy and exploration are preferred.

ABSTRACT: This study investigated the effects of free-range (FR) and cage-rearing (CR) systems on intestinal health, carcass traits, and microbial diversity in the Danzhou chicken breed. Two groups of 125 hens in each group, aged 42 wk, were reared under FR and CR systems. At 50 wk, 50 hens from each group were randomly selected for carcass analysis and 10 hens for intestinal morphology and microbiota profiling. Results indicated a significant increase in villus height (VH) in the duodenum (P < 0.05), jejunum (P < 0.01), and ileum (P < 0.001) of the CR group. Additionally, the ratio of VH to crypt depth (VR) significantly (P < 0.001) increased in the jejunum, while crypt depth (CD) decreased significantly (P < 0.001) in the same section in the CR group. Carcass traits, including dress weight (DW), eviscerated with giblet weight (EGW), eviscerated weight (EW), and leg muscle weight (LW) significantly improved (P < 0.05) in the CR group. Microbial diversity showed significant β-diversity differences, with Lactobacillus, Enterococcus, and Oxalobacteraceae as dominant biomarkers in the CR group. Conversely, Actinomycetaceae, Erysipelotrichaceae, Coriobacteriaceae, Eubacterium, Actinomyces, Scardovia, and Lachnospiraceae were dominant in the FG group. Correlation analysis showed duodenum Lactobacillus was positively correlated with VH (P < 0.05), EW (P < 0.05), and LW (P < 0.001). Jejunum Lactobacillus was positively correlated considerably with VH (P < 0.01), VR (P < 0.05), DW (P < 0.05), EGW (P < 0.01), and LW (P < 0.001). Ileum Lactobacillus was positively correlated with EGW (P < 0.01), EW (P < 0.05), and LW (P < 0.01). Aeriscardovia in duodenum was positively (P < 0.01) associated with EGW. Enterococcus in the duodenum was positively (P < 0.05) associated with EGW and in Jejunum positively correlated with VH (P < 0.05) and VR (P < 0.01). The study concludes that cage rearing improves intestinal health, carcass traits, and microbial diversity in Danzhou chickens, with Lactobacillus and Enterococcus playing key roles.

Dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) is an important nitrate reduction pathway in freshwater sediments. Many studies have focused on the DNRA process in various natural habitats. However, the joint operation of cascade reservoirs will affect the physical and chemical properties of sediments, which may change the DNRA process and bacterial community pattern in the surface sediments of cascade reservoirs. Our study was the first to investigate the spatiotemporal distribution patterns of potential DNRA rate, nrfA gene abundances, and DNRA bacterial community diversity in surface sediments of the Lancang River cascade reservoirs. The results of slurry incubation experiments combined with the 15N isotope tracer experiment ascertained that the potential rates of DNRA were 0.01–0.15 nmol-N cm−3 h−1, and qPCR results indicated that the abundance range of nrfA was 1.08 × 105–2.51 × 106 copies g−1 dry weight. High throughput sequencing of the nrfA gene revealed that the relative abundance of Anaeromyxobacter (4.52% on average), Polyangium (4.09%), Archangium (1.86%), Geobacter (1.34%), and Lacunisphaera (1.32%) were high. Pearson and RDA correlation analysis exhibited that nrfA gene abundance was positively correlated with altitude, pH, OC, and sand concentration. Anaeromyxobacter was positively correlated with reservoir age and DNRA potential rate. The deterministic environmental selection process plays a crucial role in the formation of the DNRA bacterial community. Network analysis displayed that the dominant DNRA genus was the key population of the DNRA microbial community in the sediments of Lancang River cascade reservoirs. This study reveals that the variation of DNRA bacterial activity and community structure is largely driven by the construction of cascade reservoirs, and provides a new idea for further understanding the characteristics of the DNRA community in the cascade reservoir ecosystem.

Objective With the recent exponential increase in express deliveries across China, the number of patients with flame burns caused by electric bicycle battery chargers (BEBBC) has markedly increased in burn units. In this study, we aimed to characterize BEBBC to systematically explore measures to prevent their occurrence. Methods We performed a retrospective chart review of patients with flame burns who visited the Burn Department of Rui Jin Hospital between January 2015 and December 2021. Results Sixty-three patients with BEBBC and 1412 with types of other flame burn were included in this study. Fifty-six of the 63 BEBBC cases occurred between 9 pm and 7 am. BEBBC incidents involved a higher incidence of group burn in which multiple individuals were affected. Non-local patients with BEBBC were significantly younger than their local counterparts. BEBBC had a higher mortality than types of other flame burn. Conclusions The rising incidence of BEBBC calls for greater attention because of the associated high mortality and heavy burden on society. Enacting related legislation, disseminating information to the public, and improving treatment to control infection can help prevent BEBBC, increase its cure rate, and reduce patient mortality.

ABSTRACTRemote sensing technology plays a critical role in evaluating large-scale ecological restoration efforts. However, previous studies tend to focus on specific aspects of ecological restoration, such as water conservation, vegetation restoration, or land rehabilitation. As a sustainable development demonstration city in China, Taiyuan has undertaken numerous ecological projects to mitigate environmental degradation caused by its long-standing energy-driven economic expansion. To comprehensively evaluate Taiyuan’s ecological restoration efforts, this study used remote sensing technology to assess its progress from the SDGs perspectives, such as water conservation (SDG 6.3.2), air quality improvement (SDG 11.6.2), and ecosystem preservation (SDG 6.6.1, 15.1.1, 15.3.1, 15.4.2). Firstly, ecological restoration indicators were selected from the aforementioned SDGs perspectives. Secondly, a new vegetation growth condition index (VGCI) was developed to accurately monitor changes in vegetation growth. Finally, Taiyuan’s ecological restoration efforts were evaluated based on the selected indicators. The results showed that Taiyuan has made significant progress in ecological restoration, including improved water and air quality, increased forest coverage, and restored mine’s vegetation, likely due to its ecological projects. This study provides a useful framework for evaluating ecological restoration efforts and advancing sustainability goals.

China is rich in lithium resources. However as the world's largest consumer of lithium resources and producer of lithium batteries, lithium is highly dependent on foreign countries, and there are hidden dangers in the supply system. It is urgent to improve the safety and security of China's lithium resources. Based on the combing and research on the distribution of lithium resources at home and abroad and the supply and demand situation of lithium mineral products, this paper analyzes and elaborates on the main problems and causes faced by China's lithium resources. This paper analyzes the main problems faced by China's lithium resources and their causes, and puts forward opinions and suggestions on the development and utilization, scientific and technological research, industrial structure, institutional mechanism, personnel construction, market regulation, overseas strategy and other aspects in order to increase production of lithium resources and maintain supply and stability, which provides useful reference for ensuring the safety and stability of China's lithium resources and the healthy and orderly development of lithium mining industry.

Abstract Background Different posterior inclinations of tibial component after unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) may lead to different biomechanical characteristics of the knee joint. This finite element study was designed to investigate the tibiofemoral contact pressures after UKA with different posterior inclinations of tibial component. Methods Finite element model of a healthy knee joint was constructed, and mobile-bearing (MB) UKA models with 5 different posterior inclinations (3°, 5°, 7°, 9° and 11°) of tibial components were simulated. The maximum contact pressures of tibial plateau cartilage in the lateral compartment and polyethylene insert in the medial compartment were calculated based on the ground reaction force and the angle of the knee flexion obtained by 3D motion capture system. Results The loading ratio of medial and lateral compartments during standing stance (medial 54.49%, lateral 45.51%) and tibial anterior displacement (134 N, 3.89 mm) of healthy knee was basically consistent with previous experimental data. The maximum contact pressures of the medial meniscus and lateral tibial plateau cartilage of the healthy knee during standing stance were 2.14 MPa and 1.57 MPa, respectively. At the static standing phase, the maximum contact pressures of the polyethylene insert decreased from 17.90 to 17.29 Mpa, and the maximum contact pressures of the tibial plateau cartilage in the lateral compartment increased from 0.81 to 0.92 Mpa following an increase in the posterior inclination of the tibial component. At the first peak of ground reaction force, the maximum contact pressures of polyethylene insert increased from 22.37 to 25.16 MPa, and the maximum contact pressures of tibial plateau cartilage in the lateral compartment increased from 3.03 to 3.33 MPa, with the increase in the posterior inclination of the tibial component. At the second peak of ground reaction force, the maximum contact pressures of polyethylene insert decreased from 2.34 to 2.22 MPa with the increase in posterior inclination of tibial component. Conclusion The preoperative and postoperative finite element models of MB UKA were well established. The results showed that the maximum contact pressures of the polyethylene insert did not change significantly with the increase in the posterior inclination of the tibial prosthesis, while the maximum contact pressures of the tibial plateau cartilage of the lateral compartment increased when the posterior inclination of the tibial prosthesis was > 7°. Our results also show that the maximum contact pressures were greater with an excessive inclination angle (11°) of the tibial component, and the pressures of the tibial plateau cartilage in the lateral compartment were more concentrated on the posterior area. This study, therefore, proposes that excessive osteotomy should be avoided.

Abstract Background Based on the current trend of increasing incidence of choledocholithiasis, it is of great significance to explore the closure method of the common bile duct during laparoscopic choledocholithotomy. Methods Backtracking full-thickness continuous everting suture was selected for primary closure of the common bile duct suture, while traditional T-tube drainage was selected for the control group. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to reduce baseline differences between the two groups. Result The intraoperative blood loss, operation time, postoperative recovery speed, postoperative bleeding, postoperative pancreatitis, recurrence rate of bile duct stones, and hospitalization time in the primary closure group were all less than those in the T-tube drainage group. Conclusion Under certain conditions, backtracking full-thickness continuous everting suture could benefit patients with choledocholithiasis compared with traditional T-tube drainage.

Wild giant pandas are inherently solitary creatures, however, the ex-situ conservation efforts significantly alter the living circumstances of their captive counterparts. Following the breeding period, giant pandas in captivity may be maintained in social groups. Currently, there is a lack of research on the effects of group housing on the physiology, behavior, and gut microbiota of captive giant pandas. This study divided six captive giant pandas into two groups following the breeding period. By comparing the behavior, physiology, and microorganisms of the two groups, we aim to investigate the behavioral responses and physiological adaptation mechanisms exhibited by captive giant pandas in a “group living” state. Our findings indicate that sub-adult giant pandas housed in group settings exhibit a significantly longer duration of playing behavior (including interactive and non-interactive play) compared to their counterparts housed separately (p < 0.001) while also demonstrating a significantly lower duration of stereotyped behavior than their separately housed counterparts. Additionally, an analysis of urine cortisol and heart rate variability between the two groups revealed no significant differences. Simultaneously, the group housing strategy markedly elevated the β diversity of gut microbiota in sub-adult giant pandas. In conclusion, the group-rearing model during the sub-adult stage has been shown to significantly alter the behavioral patterns of captive giant pandas. In conclusion, within the present captive setting, the group-rearing approach during the sub-adult stage proved to be less distressing for adult captive giant pandas.

To enhance the detection of pavement-sealed cracks and ensure the long-term stability of pavement performance, a novel approach called the shuffle attention-based pavement-sealed crack detection is proposed. This method consists of three essential components: the feature extraction network, the detection head, and the Wise Intersection over Union loss function. Within both the feature extraction network and the detection head, the shuffle attention module is integrated to capture the high-dimensional semantic information of pavement-sealed cracks by combining spatial and channel attention in parallel. The two-way detection head with multi-scale feature fusion efficiently combines contextual information for pavement-sealed crack detection. Additionally, the Wise Intersection over Union loss function dynamically adjusts the gradient gain, enhancing the accuracy of bounding box fitting and coverage area. Experimental results highlight the superiority of our proposed method, with higher mAP@0.5 (98.02%), Recall (0.9768), and F1-score (0.9680) values compared to the one-stage state-of-the-art methods, showcasing improvements of 0.81%, 1.8%, and 2.79%, respectively.

Understanding the genetic basis of salt resistance in crops is crucial for agricultural productivity. This study investigates the phenotypic and genetic basis of salt stress response in rice (Oryza sativa L.), focusing on germination and seedling traits. Under salt stress conditions, significant differences were observed in seed germination and seedling traits between parental LH99 (Indica rice LuHui 99) and SN265 (japonica rice ShenNong 265). Transgressive segregation was evident within the RIL population, indicating complex genetic interactions. Nine QTLs were detected at germination and seedling stages under salt stress, namely qSGE5 and qSGE7 for seed germination energy (SGE); qSGP7 for seed germination percentage (SGP); qSSH7, qSSH9-1, and qSSH9-2 for seeding height (SSH); qSRN6 for root number (SRN); and qSDW6 and qSDW9 for dry weight (SDW). Among them, qSSH9-1 and qSDW9 were localized in the same interval, derived from the salt-resistant parent SN265. PCA revealed distinct trait patterns under salt stress, captured by six PCs explaining 81.12% of the total variance. PC composite scores were used to localize a QTL associated with early salt resistance in rice qESC9, which was located in the same interval as qSSH9-1 and qSDW9, and was subsequently unified under the name qESC9, an important QTL for early-growth salt tolerance in rice. Correlation analysis also confirmed a relationship between alleles of qESC9 and the resistance to salt, underscoring the critical role this locus plays in the determination of overall salt tolerance in rice. Physiological analyses of extreme phenotype lines highlighted the importance of ion exclusion mechanisms in salt-resistant lines, while salt-susceptible lines exhibited elevated oxidative stress and impaired antioxidant defense, contributing to cellular damage. This comprehensive analysis sheds light on the genetic and physiological mechanisms underlying salt stress response in rice, providing valuable insights for breeding programs aimed at enhancing salt resistance in rice.

Strawberries are mainly propagated by stolons, which can be divided into monopodial and sympodial types. Monopodial stolons consistently produce ramets at each node following the initial single dormant bud, whereas sympodial stolons develop a dormant bud before each ramet. Sympodial stolon encompasses both dormant buds and ramet buds, making it suitable for studying the formation mechanism of different stolon types. In this study, we utilized sympodial stolons from Fragaria nilgerrensis as materials and explored the mechanisms underlying sympodial stolon development through transcriptomic and phytohormonal analyses. The transcriptome results unveiled that auxin, cytokinin, and sugars likely act as main regulators. Endogenous hormone analysis revealed that the inactivation of auxin could influence bud dormancy. Exogenous cytokinin application primarily induced dormant buds to develop into secondary stolons, with the proportion of ramet formation being very low, less than 10%. Furthermore, weighted gene co-expression network analysis identified key genes involved in ramet formation, including auxin transport and response genes, the cytokinin activation gene LOG1, and glucose transport genes SWEET1 and SFP2. Consistently, in vitro cultivation experiments confirmed that glucose enhances the transition of dormant buds into ramets within two days. Collectively, cytokinin and glucose act as dormant breakers, with cytokinin mainly driving secondary stolon formation and glucose promoting ramet generation. This study improved our understanding of stolon patterning and bud development in the sympodial stolon of strawberries.

The backflow of high-temperature products in an engine’s combustion chamber is a key issue which can significantly reduce combustion efficiency. This is particularly problematic for hypergolic propellants, as the high-temperature products may still contain fuel or an oxidizer. If either the fuel or the oxidizer backflows into the manifold of the other, it can easily lead to micro-explosions, thereby creating a threat. To address this problem, this paper proposes a new design of an anti-backflow injector, aimed at effectively preventing the backflow of combustion products to the propellant manifold. A steady-state, non-reactive Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model is employed to evaluate the steady internal flow characteristics of the proposed anti-backflow injector. Additionally, a complementary transient, multiphase fluid dynamics simulation is carried out to assess the response characteristics of the anti-backflow injector. Our analysis focuses on the response characteristics of the concave valve core. The study also explores the impact of different expansion port angles on the injection effect, finding that the vortex diameter at the injector outlet is positively related to the expansion port angle. It is also shown that the injection angle becomes more stable as the expansion angle increases. When the expansion port angles are 10° and 20°, the injection angles show similar trends. In terms of anti-backflow effect, taking the injection stiffness of 150% and a time range of 300 µs as examples, the response time of the anti-backflow models with expansion ports of 10°, 15°, and 20° is increased by 67 µs, 99 µs, and 213 µs, respectively, compared to the base models with the same expansion angles. Meanwhile, when the injection stiffness is 50%, the response time of the anti-backflow models with expansion ports of 10°, 15°, and 20° is increased by 207 µs, 210 µs, and 207 µs, respectively. When the injection stiffness is 20%, the response recovery speed of the anti-backflow models with expansion ports of 10° and 15° is increased by 41 µs and 96 µs, respectively. However, the performance of the anti-backflow model with a 20° expansion port is 216 µs of the base model. The optimized design of the anti-backflow injector has potential applications in solving the propellant backflow problem and contributes to the advancement of combustors.

In order to reveal the mechanism of sleeved stud connectors, 15 push-out specimens were designed, and static loading tests were conducted to evaluate the mechanical performance. The shear performance differences between the novel sleeved studs and conventional welded studs were compared. Referring to the experimental results, an Abaqus nonlinear finite element model was established to study the shear mechanism of sleeved stud connectors. Parametric analysis was conducted to investigate the effects of stud height, sleeve filling material, and sleeve diameter on the mechanical performance of the connectors. The experimental and finite element analysis results indicated that the ultimate shear bearing capacity and shear stiffness of the sleeved stud connectors were higher than those of ordinary welded studs, and the maximum slip was relatively small. Compared to conventional welded studs, the ultimate bearing capacity of sleeved studs increased by 4% to 8%, and the shear stiffness increased by 25% to 35%. Since the shear behavior of sleeved studs mainly occurred at the base of the studs, the influence of stud height on shear performance was relatively small. However, sleeve and stud diameter have a great influence on bearing capacity and stiffness. As the Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) near the base of the stud effectively enhanced the shear carrying capacity of the sleeved stud connectors, the shear carrying capacity and shear stiffness increased with the increase in the sleeve diameter.

Hair colours, as a daily cosmetic used in ancient Chinese life, often appear in ancient Chinese medical books, according to types, and can be classified into herbal hair colours and mineral hair colours. Experimental reconstruction of herbal hair colours and mineral hair colours was carried out to explore the influence of factors such as the type and material of hair colours on the colouring effect. Meanwhile, the experiments were recorded and analysed using a stereo microscope. The experimental results show that the ancient hair colours are authentic and it is feasible that mineral hair colours and herbal hair colours are capable of colouring hair. Mineral hair colours have better colour fastness and colouring effects than herbal hair colours.

Awe could increase prosocial behavior, but little is known about its effects on interpersonal forgiveness. This study aims to explore the potential impact of awe on interpersonal forgiveness and the underlying mechanism of this process, using a combination of questionnaires, economic game and computational modeling. In Study 1, we utilized Trait Awe Scale (TAS) and Forgiveness Trait Scale (FTS) to examine the association between trait awe and trait forgiveness. In Study 2, we employed pre-screened video to induce awe, happy and neutral emotions, then evaluated the effects of induced awe on small-self and interpersonal forgiveness in hypothetical interpersonal offensive situations (Study 2a) and two economic interaction situations (Study 2b). Results from Study 1 indicate that there is a positive correlation between trait awe and trait forgiveness. Study 2 reveal that awe can enhance interpersonal forgiveness in both interpersonal conflict situations and economic interaction situations, and this effect is mediated by the sense of small-self elicited by awe. Overall, these findings contribute to our understanding of the potential impact of awe on interpersonal forgiveness and provide valuable insights into the mechanisms through which awe may influence forgiveness. Further research in this area could help to elucidate the potential applications of awe-based interventions in promoting forgiveness and positive social interactions.

Urban trees provide important ecosystem services to improve cities’ liveability and sustainability. Leaf chlorophyll content (Cab) estimation by remote sensing can help monitor tree health efficiently. However, the Cab retrieval of urban trees is challenging because of the complex canopy structures, backgrounds, and illuminations conditions. This paper proposed an automatic method for partitioning sunlit/shaded pixels and removal of bright-specular/dark-hole and background pixels. In addition, we proposed a new index, the Urban Tree Chlorophyll Index (UTCI), defined as UTCI=(ρ709-ρ697)/(ρ709-ρ686), based on the simulated hyperspectral images of urban tree using radiative transfer model. This proposed UTCI index outperforms existing narrow-band indices (NBIs) for estimating Cab for complex canopy structures, backgrounds, and illumination conditions evaluated using simulated hyperspectral images. The advantage of the UTCI was also demonstrated when applied to UAV hyperspectral images validated with direct field foliar measurements of Cab. It surpasses existing NBIs, demonstrating a moderate correlation (R2 = 0.34) with Cab under varying irradiance and a strong correlation (R2 = 0.62) with Cab under stable diffuse illumination. This study, for the first time, extensively investigated NBIs for Cab estimation of urban trees from UAV hyperspectral images, providing a theoretical and operational basis for future monitoring of Cab in the management of urban trees. This new method can be potentially applied to other vegetation types with complex canopy structures, backgrounds, and illuminations conditions.

BackgroundDiabetic skin wound is a complex problem due to the disruption of normal repairing program and lack of effective remedy. Lucilia sericata larvae (maggot) is a folk method to treat chronic skin wound, while its therapeutic effects on that caused by diabetic remains unknown.ObjectiveThis study aims to investigate the therapeutic effects of maggot extract (M.E.) on diabetic skin wound and its molecular mechanism by establishing the skin wound model of diabetic Sprague Dawley (SD) rats.MethodsDiabetic model was established by injecting intraperitoneally streptozotocin in SD rats under specific pathogen-free (SPF) conditions. The rat fasting blood glucose values were ≧16.7 mmol/L 72 hours after intraperitoneal streptozotocin (60mg/kg body weight) injection. The rats were divided into five groups (n = 10/group): normal group: normal SD rats without any treatment, diabetic blank group: the diabetic rats without any treatment, Vaseline group: the diabetic rats dressed with Vaseline, recombinant human epidermal-growth-factor (rhEGF) group: the diabetic rats dressed with a mixture of Vaseline and 200 μg/g rhEGF, M.E. group: the diabetic rats dressed with a mixture of Vaseline and 150 μg/ml maggot extract. The round open wounds (1.0 cm in diameter) down to the muscle fascia were made on both sides of rat dorsa by removing the skin layer (epidermis and dermis) and were daily photographed for calculating their healing rates. Hematoxylin-eosin (HE) and Masson's trichrome staining were performed on skin wound sections to analyze re-epithelialization and granulation tissue formation. Immunohistochemical (IHC), immunofluorescent (IF) stainings and Western blotting were conducted to analyze the statuses of STAT3 signaling.ResultsThe average wound healing rates on the 14th day were 91.7% in the normal, 79.6% in M.E., 71% in rhEGF, 55.1% in vaseline and 43.3% in the diabetes blank group. Morphological staining showed more active granulation tissue formation, re-epithelialization and neovascularization in M.E.-group than those in the blank and the vaseline-treated groups. Decreased p-STAT3 nuclear tranlocation and down-regulated Bcl-2, CyclinD1 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression were evidenced in the diabetic rats, which could be improved by rhEGF and especially M.E.ConclusionMaggot extract would be an alternative and/or adjuvant candidate for the better management of diabetic skin wounds because of its activity in enhancing STAT3 activation.

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) records important information about the interaction of electromagnetic waves with the Earth’s surface. However, long-term and high-resolution backscatter coefficient data are still lacking in many urban studies (e.g., building height estimation). Here, we proposed a framework to reconstruct the 1-km backscatter coefficient in 1990–2022 utilizing the Sentinel-1 Ground Range Detected data and Landsat time series data in the Jing–Jin–Ji (JJJ) region. First, we developed a regression model to convert the optical signals from Landsat into backscatter coefficients as the Sentinel-1 data, using observations from 2015 to 2022. Then, we reconstructed backscatter coefficients from 1990 to 2022 using the long-term Landsat data. Using the reconstructed backscatter coefficients, we analyzed the dynamic patterns of building height over the past decades. The proposed approach performs well on estimating the backscatter coefficient and its spatial pattern, with the annual mean absolute error, root mean square error, and R2 of 1.10 dB, 1.50 dB, and 0.64, respectively. The temporal trends revealed from the reconstructed backscatter data are reliable compared with satellite observations at a relatively coarse resolution, with Pearson’s coefficients above 0.92 in 6 sample cities. The derived building height from the reconstructed SAR data indicates that the JJJ region experienced a noticeable upward expansion in 1990–2022, e.g., Beijing has the fastest growth rate of 0.420 km3/decade regarding the total building volumes. The proposed framework of reconstructing SAR data from optical satellite images provides a new insight to complement the long-term and high-resolution backscatter from local to global scales.

Purpose: Variant interpretation, guided by American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics guidelines, can inform clinical decision-making. However, interpretations may change over time for a variety of reasons. Periodic reanalysis of previous variant interpretations is important to ensure that reported genetic findings remain accurate according to current knowledge. Methods: We performed automated filtering by comparing ClinVar variants available in August 2020 with those from August 2021 to screen for potential reanalysis candidates from 3 projects. These variants were subsequently interpreted based on the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics/Association for Molecular Pathology variant interpretation guideline or ClinGen revised gene-specific guidelines if applicable. Results: Our method annotated 241 unique variants requiring reanalysis, from 3 projects containing 3,832,210 previously interpreted variants, including those filtered automatically. Among these 241 variants, 43 variants changed interpretation, including 55.81% (N = 24) with upgraded and 44.19% (N = 19) with downgraded classifications. An efficiency study showed that our strategy increased the reanalysis efficiency and saved reviewing time. Conclusion: We demonstrated an effective high-throughput method, initiating from external data updates, to achieve variant reanalysis in a clinical laboratory. This filtering method reduced the number of variants that need to be reanalyzed, screened potential variants, and saved time and cost for clinical laboratories.

Abstract Albeit nanozymes‐based tumor catalytic therapy (NCT) relies on endogenous chemical reactions that could achieve tumor microenvironment (TME)‐specialized reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, the unsatisfactory catalytic activity of nanozymes accompanied by complex TME poses a barrier to the therapeutic effect of NCT. Herein, a one‐step in situ synthesis strategy is reported to construct ternary Ru/TiO2−x@TiCN heterojunctions through oxidative conversion of TiCN nanosheets (NSs) to TiO2−x NSs and reductive deposition of Ru3+ to Ru nanoparticles. The narrow bandgap and existence of heterojunctions enhance the ultrasound‐activated ROS generation of Ru/TiO2−x@TiCN because of the accelerated electron transfer and inhibits electron–hole pair recombination. The augmented ROS production efficiency is achieved by Ru/TiO2−x@TiCN with triple enzyme‐like activities, which amplifies the ROS levels in a cascade manner through the catalytic decomposition of endogenous H2O2 to relieve hypoxia and heterojunction‐mediated NCT, as well as depletion of overexpressed glutathione. The satisfactory therapeutic effects of Ru/TiO2−x@TiCN heterojunctions are achieved through synergetic sonodynamic therapy and NCT, which achieve the complete elimination of tumors without recurrence. This strategy highlights the potential of in situ synthesis of semiconductor heterojunctions as enhanced sonosensitizers and nanozymes for efficient tumor therapy.

The FIFA World Cup, which represents the highest level in football, is regarded as a showcase to unfold the development trends of modern football, thus arousing great interest among researchers. However, most of the previous research designs studied the simple linear correlation between technical indicators and game outcomes, which may overlook the complex causalities in football performance. The aim of current study was to introduce a new method to examine winning patterns emerging from Qatar 2022 through a configurational lens. To this end, fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) was conducted using 98 samples (n = 98) out of 49 Qatar 2022 matches discriminating winning and losing teams in regular time (group stage) and in 30 min of extra time (knockout stage). Then, we selected seven variables as our causal conditions, namely, shots on target, possession, defensive line breaks, crosses, receptions in the final third, forced turnovers, and direct pressures. Necessity analysis and sufficiency analysis of configurations were conducted according to fsQCA requirements. The fsQCA operation showed that no individual causal condition is necessary to winning a game and four configurations were derived from the QCA results and these combinations of conditions fall into three typologies of play style: a possession play style, direct play style, and all-round play style. The results confirmed the fact that football is a complex system and suggested that a winning outcome is often produced by combinations of multiple factors. The findings of the current study contribute to the literature by introducing the configurations of various technical and tactical indicators that could raise the possibility of winning and can be used by practitioners working within the fields of player development, coaching, and match preparation.

Carbon sinks in mangrove soils play a critical role in climate change mitigation globally. Soil dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a major form of labile organic matter and influences carbon cycling in wetland ecosystems. However, the factors regulating DOM pools in mangrove soils on a regional scale are not well understood. Here, we used a novel approach to assess soil DOM dynamics and its environmental drivers in mangrove wetlands on a national scale in China. Soil samples were collected from 43 sampling sites and distributed in mangroves across the coastline of China. DOM extracted from mangrove soils was characterized by fluorescence spectroscopy. We estimated that dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content ranged from 0.20 ± 0.02 g/kg to 3.85 ± 0.09 g/kg and nationally averaged 0.73 ± 0.07 g/kg in mangrove soils. Soil DOM was composed of humic-like substances, including humic acid-like (53.46 ± 8.74%) and fulvic acid-like (46.54 ± 8.74%). DOM pools in mangrove soils were identified to be perturbed by terrestrial inputs. Besides, the coupling interactions of environmental controls on the soil DOM pool were validated by establishing the structural equation modeling (SEM). We found that precipitation is the most important driver, which controlled directly the inputs and outputs of DOM pools. It also indirectly influenced DOM pools by regulating soil parameters through the cascade reactions. Cu, salinity, and clay are key mediators among soil parameters for precipitation affecting DOM pools. Precipitation influences soil DOC negatively and CDOM and FDOM positively markedly. The results provide novel insights into the labile carbon pool in mangrove soils and are beneficial for improving the assessment frameworks in the blue carbon ecosystems.

Background: Polychlorinated alkanes (PCAs) constitute a large group of individual congeners originating from commercial chlorinated paraffin (CP) products with carbon chain lengths of PCAs-C10-13, PCAs-C14-17, and PCAs-C18-32, occasionally containing PCAs-C6-9 impurities. The extensive use of CPs has led to global environmental pollution of PCAs. This study aimed to quantify PCAs in paired serum and breast milk of lactating Swedish mothers, exploring their concentration relationship. Methods: Twenty-five paired samples of mothers’ blood serum and breast milk were analysed and concentrations were determined for PCAs C6-32 and compared to 4,4′-DDE, the PCB congener 2,2′,4,4′,5,5′-hexachlorobiphenyl (CB-153), and hexachlorobenzene (HCB). Results: The median concentrations of PCAs-C6-9, PCAs-C10-13, PCAs-C14-17, PCAs-C18-32 and ΣPCAs in serum were 14, 790, 520, 16 and 1350 ng/g lipid weight (lw), respectively, and in breast milk 0.84, 36, 63, 6.0 and 107 ng/g lw. Levels of 4,4′-DDE, CB-153 and HCB were comparable in the two matrices, serum and breast milk at 17, 12 and 4.9 ng/g lw. The results show significant differences of PCAs-C10-13 and PCAs-C14-17 in breast milk with 22– and 6.2-times lower lw-based concentrations than those measured in serum. On wet weight the differences serum/breast milk ratios of PCAs-C6-9, PCAs-C10-13, PCAs-C14-17, PCAs-C18-32 and ΣPCAs were 1.7, 3.2, 1.0, 0.4 and 1.6, respectively, while the ratio for 4,4′-DDE, CB-153 and HCB were each close to 0.1. Conclusion: Swedish lactating mothers had high serum concentrations of PCAs-C10-13 and PCAs-C14-17, with the ΣPCAs median serum concentration of 1350 ng/g lw. The breast milk concentration, although considerably lower at 107 ng/g lw, still surpassed those of 4,4′-DDE, CB-153 and HCB, suggesting an exposure risk of infants to PCAs. The variation in blood and breast milk accumulation between PCAs and studied legacy POPs, is rarely discussed but warrants further studies on partitioning properties as well as associated toxicological implications.

Mangrove ecosystems play a critical role in supporting ecological service values and regulating the global carbon cycle. They have become one of the most highly vulnerable ecosystems in the Anthropocene under the long-term influence of diverse human perturbations. Soil dissolved organic matter (DOM) is an active fraction within the carbon cycle in mangrove ecosystems. However, it remains unclear how human perturbations regulate DOM dynamics. Here, we used the fluorescence method and structural equation modeling to quantify the anthropogenic and environmental influence on soil DOM across the urban development gradient on a national scale in China. Anthropogenic activities (urban construction and sewage discharge) and environmental factors (salinity, metals, pH, and soil organic carbon) were striking forces that shaped DOM quality in mangrove soils. Both indirect and direct effects played critical roles in the soil DOM heterogeneity across the gradient of urbanization. Environmental factors can act as cofactors mediating human impact on DOM pools and as promoters transforming soil DOM in mangroves. Our study provided novel insights into the relationship between coastal developments and mangrove soil DOM heterogeneity and improved knowledge of coastal ecosystems as blue carbon sinks.
