Abstract

We experimentally demonstrate the formation of room-temperature skyrmions with radii of about 25 nm in easy-plane anisotropy multilayers with an interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). We detect the formation of individual magnetic skyrmions by magnetic force microscopy and find that the skyrmions are stable in out-of-plane fields up to about 200 mT. We determine the interlayer exchange coupling as well as the strength of the interfacial DMI. Additionally, we investigate the dynamic microwave spin excitations by broadband magnetic resonance spectroscopy. From the uniform Kittel mode we determine the magnetic anisotropy and lowdamping α < 0.04. We also find clear magnetic resonance signatures in the nonuniform (skyrmion) state. Our findings demonstrate that skyrmions in easy-plane multilayers are promising for spin-dynamical applications.

Abstract

The tropical dry forests of NW Peru are heavily shaped by the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), where especially El Niño brings rain to arid to semi‐arid areas. However, the resulting effects on biodiversity patterns remain largely unknown as well as the effect of environmental variables on the floristic composition under varying rainfall patterns. Therefore, we studied the spatio‐temporal effects of different ENSO episodes on floristic biodiversity along a climatic gradient ranging from the coastal desert to the Andean foothills. We sampled 50 vegetation plots in four years representing different ENSO episodes. To highlight the spatio‐temporal changes in floristic composition and beta diversity across ENSO episodes, we predicted ordination scores with a Generalized Additive Model. We applied variation partitioning to test if topographic or edaphic variables gained in importance during more humid ENSO episodes. Additionally, we executed an irrigation–fertilization experiment to quantify the beneficial effects of the water–nutrient interaction under different simulated ENSO rainfall scenarios. Plant species richness increased under humid conditions during the humid La Niña (2012) and the moderate El Niño (2016), and slightly decreased under the very humid conditions during the coastal El Niño (2017). The spatial prediction revealed that specific vegetation formations became more pronounced with increasing water input, but that a large water surplus led to the disruption of the strict order along the climatic gradient. Edaphic and topographic variables gained in importance with increased water availability (2012 and 2016), however, this effect was not further amplified under very wet conditions (2017). The experiment showed that plant cover under Super Niño conditions was three times higher when fertilized. Abstract

The effect of sapphire-substrate thickness on the curvature and stress in thick hydride vapor phase epitaxial GaN films was studied by high-resolution x-ray diffraction at variable temperatures. The curvature was found to have the maximum value for comparable thicknesses of the film and the substrate, while the stress at the film surface decreases with increasing film thickness and increases with increasing substrate thickness, which is in very good agreement with the simulation results. The curvature at the growth temperature was found to be strongly influenced by the value of the intrinsic tensile strain, which is determined by the film/substrate thickness ratio. Abstract

The mosaicity of GaN layers grown by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy, on (0001) sapphire and exhibiting different grain diameters is studied using high-resolution x-ray diffraction. The coherence lengths, the tilt, and the twist of the mosaic structure are determined utilizing data taken in different x-ray scattering geometries. The results of different models, which were applied, are then compared and discussed. The dislocation densities, obtained from the x-ray data, are compared with the results of plan-view transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. Abstract

During the Engineering Validation and Engineering Design Activities (EVEDA) phase (2007-2014) of the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF), an advanced engineering design of the High Flux Test Module (HFTM) has been developed with the objective to facilitate the controlled irradiation of steel samples in the high flux area directly behind the IFMIF neutron source. The development process addressed included manufacturing techniques, CAD, neutronic, thermal-hydraulic and mechanical anal- yses complemented by a series of validation activities. Validation included manufacturing of 1:1 parts and mockups, test of prototypes in the FLEX and HELOKA-LP helium loops of KIT for verification of the thermal and mechanical properties, and irradiation of specimen filled capsule prototypes in the BR2 test reactor. The prototyping activities were backed by several R&D studies addressing focused issues like han- dling of liquid NaK (as filling medium) and insertion of Small Specimen Test Technique (SSTT) specimens into the irradiation capsules. This paper provides an up-todate design description of the HFTM irradiation device, and reports on the achieved performance criteria related to the requirements. Results of the vali- dation activities are accounted for and the most important issues for further development are identified.

Abstract

Cervical artery dissection (CeAD), a mural hematoma in a carotid or vertebral artery, is a major cause of ischemic stroke in young adults although relatively uncommon in the general population (incidence of 2.6/100,000 per year)1. Minor cervical traumas, infection, migraine and hypertension are putative risk factors1-3, and inverse associations with obesity and hypercholesterolemia are described3,4. No confirmed genetic susceptibility factors have been identified using candidate gene approaches5. We performed genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in 1,393 CeAD cases and 14,416 controls. The rs9349379[G] allele (PHACTR1) was associated with lower CeAD risk (odds ratio (OR) = 0.75, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.69-0.82; P = 4.46 × 10-10), with confirmation in independent follow-up samples (659 CeAD cases and 2,648 controls; P = 3.91 × 10-3; combined P = 1.00 × 10-11). The rs9349379[G] allele was previously shown to be associated with lower risk of migraine and increased risk of myocardial infarction6-9. Abstract

Strokes have especially devastating implications if they occur early in life ; however, only limited information exists on the characteristics of acute cerebrovascular disease in young adults. Although risk factors and manifestation of atherosclerosis are commonly associated with stroke in the elderly, recent data suggests different causes for stroke in the young. We initiated the prospective, multinational European study Stroke in Young Fabry Patients (sifap) to characterize a cohort of young stroke patients. Overall, 5023 patients aged 18 to 55 years with the diagnosis of ischemic stroke (3396), hemorrhagic stroke (271), transient ischemic attack (1071) were enrolled in 15 European countries and 47 centers between April 2007 and January 2010 undergoing a detailed, standardized, clinical, laboratory, and radiological protocol. Median age in the overall cohort was 46 years. Definite Fabry disease was diagnosed in 0.5% (95% confidence interval, 0.4%–0.8% ; n=27) of all patients ; and probable Fabry disease in additional 18 patients. Males dominated the study population (2962/59%) whereas females outnumbered men (65.3%) among the youngest patients (18–24 years). About 80.5% of the patients had a first stroke. Silent infarcts on magnetic resonance imaging were seen in 20% of patients with a first-ever stroke, and in 11.4% of patients with transient ischemic attack and no history of a previous cerebrovascular event. The most common causes of ischemic stroke were large artery atherosclerosis (18.6%) and dissection (9.9%). Definite Fabry disease occurs in 0.5% and probable Fabry disease in further 0.4% of young stroke patients. Silent infarcts, white matter intensities, and classical risk factors were highly prevalent, emphasizing the need for new early preventive strategies.

Various bacterial species are known to produce metabolites of the 4-quinolone N-oxide class. These compounds have antibiotic activities, and are believed to target the respiration of competing microbes by interfering with menaquinone-binding sites in enzymes of the electron-transport chain. Interestingly, even minor structural changes in related N-oxides produced by the same organism can produce a dramatic difference in antibiotic activity, suggesting possible functional specialization. Abstract

We demonstrate a correlation between the microstructure of epilayers and the diffusion length of free carriers and excitons in heteroepitaxial and homoepitaxial GaN films. We show that the diffusion length is shorter than predicted for a given density of dislocations. With improving structural quality of the films and lower dislocation density the diffusion lengths of free carriers and excitons increase, which, in turn, increases the rate of nonradiative recombination at dislocations. This process may explain a surprisingly small change of light emission efficiency observed for GaN epilayers with varying densities of dislocations. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

The effect of sapphire-substrate thickness on the curvature and stress in thick hydride vapor phase epitaxial GaN films was studied by high-resolution x-ray diffraction at variable temperatures. The curvature was found to have the maximum value for comparable thicknesses of the film and the substrate, while the stress at the film surface decreases with increasing film thickness and increases with increasing substrate thickness, which is in very good agreement with the simulation results. The curvature at the growth temperature was found to be strongly influenced by the value of the intrinsic tensile strain, which is determined by the film/substrate thickness ratio. © 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract

Instabilities of light emission and also of stimulated emission in series of GaN epilayers and InGaN quantum well structures, including laser diode structures, are studied. A stimulated emission is observed under electron beam pumping. This enabled us to study light emission properties from laser structures and their relation to microstructure details. We demonstrate large in-plane fluctuations of light emission and that these fluctuations are also present for excitation densities larger than the threshold densities for the stimulated emission.

Abstract

Scanning and spot-mode cathodoluminescence investigations of homo-and hetero-epitaxial GaN films indicate a surprisingly small influence of their microstructure on overall intensity of a light emission. This we explain by a correlation between structural quality of these films and diffusion length of free carriers and excitons. Diffusion length increases with improving structural quality of the samples, which, in turn, enhances the rate of nonradiative recombination on structural defects, such as dislocations.
