27. Climate and forest management influence nitrogen balance of European beech forests: microbial N transformations and inorganic N net uptake capacity of mycorrhizal roots

Abstract

The effects of local climate and silvicultural treatment on the inorganic N availability, net N uptake capacity of mycorrhizal beech roots and microbial N conversion were assessed in order to characterise changes in the partitioning of inorganic N between adult beech and soil microorganisms. Fine root dynamics, inorganic N in the soil solution and in soil extracts, nitrate and ammonium uptake kinetics of beech as well as gross ammonification, nitrification and denitrification rates were determined in a beech stand consisting of paired sites that mainly differed in aspect (SW vs. NE) and stand density (controls and thinning treatments). Nitrate was the only inorganic N form detectable in the soil water. Its concentration was high in control plots of the NE aspect, but only in canopy gaps and not influenced by thinning. Neither thinning nor aspect affected the abundance of root tips in the soil. Maximum nitrate net uptake by mycorrhizal fine roots of beech, however, differed with aspect, showing significantly lower values at the SW aspect with warm–dry local climate. There were no clear-cut significant effects of local climate or thinning on microbial N conversion, but a tendency towards higher ammonification and nitrification and lower denitrification rates on the untreated controls of the SW as compared to the NE aspect. Apparently, the observed sensitivity of beech towards reduced soil water availability is at least partially due to impaired N acquisition. This seems to be mainly a consequence of reduced N uptake capacity rather than of limited microbial re-supply of inorganic N or of changed patterns of inorganic N partitioning between soil bacteria and roots.

Abstract

Die klinische Anwendung des aus der Thiacidreihe entwickelten, vorwiegend antihypertensiv wirksamen Diazoxid, einem 7Chlor-3-Methyl-l,2,4-Benzothiadia-zin-1,1-Dioxyd, fuhrt in einem weit starkeren Mase als die der sulfonamidierten Thiacide zu einer diabetischen Stoffwechsellage und besitzt daruber hinaus noch einen Effekt an Herz und Kreislauf. In zahlreichen klinischen und tierexperimentellen Untersuchungen wurde unter Diazoxidmedikation ein Anstieg des Blutzuckers und der freien Fettsauren bei Abfall der Insulinkonzentration im Serum sowie eine Tachykardie und Erhohung der Blutdruckamplitude beobachtet [1, 4, 5, 6, 8].

Abstract

Background: The galaxy sign is an irregularly marginated pulmonary nodule formed by a confluence of multiple small nodules, and it is a diagnostic radiological finding for pulmonary sarcoidosis. However, the clinical significance of the galaxy sign for sarcoidosis has been poorly investigated., Objective: This study aimed to investigate the clinical significance and detailed radiological features of the galaxy sign in patients with pulmonary sarcoidosis., Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 87 patients with biopsy-proven sarcoidosis and 108 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. Galaxy sign incidence was assessed on thoracic high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) images from each group. Correlations of galaxy sign with clinical characteristics and disease outcomes were evaluated for patients with sarcoidosis., Results: HRCT findings were available for 65 of 87 patients with pulmonary sarcoidosis and all 108 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. Galaxy sign incidence was significantly higher in patients with pulmonary sarcoidosis (n=15, 23.1%) than in those with pulmonary tuberculosis (n=2, 1.9%, p<0.001). Among the 65 patients with pulmonary sarcoidosis, those with galaxy signs (n=15) were significantly younger (median: 32 years, interquartile range [IQR] 28-38 years) than those without (n=50) (median: 62 years, IQR 37.7-73 years). The CD4/CD8 ratio in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) was also significantly lower in the former group (median: 2.6, IQR 2.0-3.9 vs. median 5.8, IQR 3.7-8.6, p<0.001)., Conclusion: Galaxy signs are associated with younger age and low BALF CD4/CD8 ratio but not disease severity.

Abstract

Introduction: Currently a sensitive early diagnosis of small vestibular schwannoma is only possible by using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)., Objectives: The main objective was a differentiation of the cochlear and retrocochlear component of small vestibular schwannoma with the help of categorial loudness scaling (CLS) and the growth function of otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE I/O-functions)., Material and Methods: 34 patients (gr. 1: 17 patients with vestibular schwannoma ≤15 mm, gr. 2: 17 matched patients with an inner ear hearing disorder) were examined. Besides audiological standard procedures they also underwent CLS according to the Würzburger auditory field and a generation of DPOAE I/O-functions was conducted on the probands., Results: The gradients of the loudness growth function as part of the CLS and the DPOAE I/O-functions showed with few exceptions [500 Hz at 0-10 dB HL during CLS (p=0,040)] no significant differences between the groups (all p>0.05). A recruitment verification with the help of CLS was possible for tumors starting at a size of 5.45,mm at 3,000 and 4,000 Hz, respectively for tumors exceeding the size of 6.85 mm at 6,000 Hz with 100% sensitivity but only low specificity., Conclusions: A differentiation between a vestibular schwannoma and a mere cochlear hearing disorder with only the help of CLS and DPOAE I/O-functions is not possible. The results corroborate the thesis of an additional cochlear component even in small vestibular schwannoma. The implementation of CLS to determine cochlear deficits linked to vestibular schwannoma seems to be medically sensible if the tumor size exceeds 5 mm.
