Based on the thoughtful and thought-provoking comments, we strengthened some of the main proposals of our framework to integrate research on personality structure, process, and development. Integration is an important, yet challenging goal for personality science, and we see considerable potential for it, theoretically and in empirical research. We clarified our use of critical concepts, such as behaviour, trait, and personality structure. We suggest that avoiding use of broadly construed traits will be helpful in preventing circularity in explanations. Strictly speaking, we see no causal role for broadly construed traits. We discuss how observed structural differences between measures taken over different time scales or within and between individuals, can inform hypotheses about shared and unique causal mechanisms, and argue for the unique relevance of psychological processes in personality science

Este artículo da a conocer los resultados de la modelización de un Test de Analogías Figurales (TAF) utilizando los aportes conjuntos de la Teoría Clásica de Tests (TCT) y de la Teoría de Respuesta al Ítem (TRI), así como la posterior interpretación de las desventajas y posibles soluciones del diseño de dicho test. Se desarrolla el marco conceptual que dio origen al armado del TAF, así como los estudios realizados con esta prueba al administrarla a dos muestras. Una de las muestras corresponde a un estudio piloto con estudiantes de Psicología, mientras que la otra muestra consistió en estudiantes de carreras artísticas y de diseño. Los resultados principales revelan indicadores favorables de unidimensionalidad y confiabilidad, así como parámetros aceptables de discriminación (a), dificultad (b) y pseudoazar (c). Se discuten las desventajas del diseño de ítems con tres reglas y nuevas especificaciones en cuanto al armado de reactivos matriciales de 2x2. This manuscript publicizes the results that concern the modelling of a Test of Figural Analogies (TFA) using Classical Test Theory (CTT) and Item Response Theory (IRT) on a joint basis, as well as the interpretation of the disadvantages and possible solutions of the test design. The theoretical background for the TFA construction is outlined, and studies accomplished after its administration to two samples is explained. One of these samples corresponds to a pilot study with Psychology students, while the other sample consisted of Art and Design college students. Main results indicate good unidimensionality and reliability, as well as acceptable discrimination (a), difficulty (b) and guessing value (c) parameters. Design disadvantages of three-rule based items are discussed, and new specifications for the 2x2 matrix item construction are given.

Se detallan las propiedades psicométricas de una Prueba de Analogías Figurales desde el marco de la Teoría de Respuesta al Ítem. Se elaboraron 36 matrices de figuras de 2x2 utilizando reglas de emplazamiento, distorsión y número. Se contó con una muestra de 499 estudiantes de Psicología de la Universidad de Buenos Aires, 79% de los cuales fueron mujeres. Se utilizó el Modelo Logístico de 3 Parámetros logrando un ajuste global altamente satisfactorio al 5% (p = .47). Sólo 3 ítems del total no ajustaron al modelo. Existe una buena potencia discriminatoria general (a: M = 1.02; DT = .33), un nivel de dificultad medio (b: M = -.03; DT = .63) y un nivel de acierto por azar ligeramente inferior a lo esperable con 6 alternativas de respuesta (c: M = .14; DT = .05). Se discuten las condiciones para modelizar la Prueba y posibles desventajas del presente estudio. The psychometric properties of a Figural Analogies Test are described within the framework of Item Response Theory. Thirty-six 2x2 matrix figures were constructed by using location, distortion and number rules. The sample included 499 psychology students from the University of Buenos Aires, 79% of whom were women. The 3-Parameter Logistic Model was used obtaining a highly satisfactory global fit at 5% (p = .47). Only 3 items did not fit the model. It had good overall discriminatory power (a: M = 1.02, SD = .33), a medium level of difficulty (b: M = -.03, SD = .63) and the c level was slightly lower than expected with six possible answers (c: M = .14, SD= .05). The conditions for modelling the test and possible disadvantages of the present study are discussed.

In this article, particular circumstances, author and ideas that influenced on the elaboration of one of the most solid personality models that Psychology has till nowadays: Eysenck Personality Model, are revised. Its main characteristics are presented, which defined it as a dispositional, dimensional, hierarchic and psychobiological model. The intention of improving dimensions description, explanation, and measurement, took this author to propose changes to his original theory and instrument. Hence, different periods of this model are analyzed. In spite of proliferation of personality theories, Eysenck model has an empirical validity that only a few have. Thus, we argue that in Personality Psychology there is a background available which represents the Paradigm into which we will probably be moving in the next years, En el presente artículo, se revisan las circunstancias particulares, autores e ideas que influyeron en la generación de uno de los modelos de personalidad más sólidos con que cuenta la Psicología hasta nuestros días: el ModeloPsicobiológico de Eysenck. Se presentan las características principales del mismo, las cuales lo definen como un modelo disposicional, dimensional, jerárquico y psicobiológico. El intento de mejorar la descripción, explicación y medición de las dimensiones llevó a este autor a proponer modificaciones a su teoría original y a sus instrumentos. Se analizan de este modo las distintas etapas de su modelo. A pesar de la proliferación de teorías de personalidad, el modelo de Eysenck tienen una validez empírica que pocos poseen. Disponemos en Psicología de la Personalidad de un cuerpo de conocimientos que representa el Paradigma dentro del cual con mucha probabilidad nos moveremos en los próximos años.

This study was undertaken to evaluate the specificity and efficiency of different methods to detect Escherichia coli K-12 strains. Another aim was to determine the frequency of E. coli K-12 strains among wild-type E. coli isolates from different sources. The detection of K-12 strains was performed both genotypically by K-12 specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and on the basis of phenotypical tests. In addition, the genome structures of E. coli strains were characterized by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). The most specific results could be obtained by the genotypical tests PCR and PFGE as well as by the K-12 specific phage assay. In total, 131 stool and 95 water isolates as well as 14 K-12 derivatives were examined by the different methods. No E. coli K-12 strains were detected among the wild-type isolates.

Escherichia coli isolates of serotype 06: K5 are the most common causative agents of cystitis and pyelonephritis in adults. To answer the question, as to whether strains of this particular serotype represent one special clonal group, out of a collection of 34 serotype 06: K5 isolates [Zingler et al. ( 1990) Zentralbl. Bakteriol Mikrobiol Hyg [A] 274:372-381] 15 strains were selected andanalyzed in detail. The flagellar (H) antigen and the outer membrane protein (OMP) pattern were determined. Furtherserum resistance properties and the genetic presence and expression of other virulence factors, including hemolysin, aerobactin, P fimbriae, S/F1C fimbriae and type 1 fimbriae was evaluated. In~laddition the Xbalmacrorestriction pattern of ten representative isolates was elaborated and the fimbrial (F) antigentype ofthe P fimbriae was determined, to obtain the complete 0: K: H: F pattern. These analyses could clearly show that the 06: K5 isolates do not represent one clonal group. The Xbal-macrorestriction profiles were heterogeneaus and marked differences in the hybridization patterns, using virulenceassociated gene probes in Southern hybridization of long-range-separated genomic DNA, were observed among the strains. However, some of strains showed similarities in the genomic profiles, arguing for clonal groupings among the 06: K5 isolates. lnterstingly the strains grouped tagether exhibited the same fimbrial F typethat many indicate a coincidence of this phenotypic trait with clonality.

A total of 127 extraintestinal Escherichia coli strains of the capsule serotypes Kl, KS, and KlOO from human and animal sources were analyzed for DNA sequences specific for the genes for various adhesins (P fimbriae fpap] and P-related sequences fprs], S fimbriae [s/a)/FlC fimbriae [foc], and type I fimbriae lfim]), aerobactin (aer), and hemolysin (hly). The expression of corresponding virulence factors was also tested. Twenty-four selected strains were analyzed by long-range DNA mapping to evaluate their genetic relationships. DNA sequences for the adhesins were often found in strains not expressing them, while strains with hemolysin and aerobactin genes usually did express them. Different isolates of the same serotype orten expressed different virulence patterns. The use of virulence-associated gene probes for Southern hybridization with genomic DNA fragments separated by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis revealed that a highly heterogeneous restriction fragment length and hybridization pattern existed even within strains of the same serotype. Long-range DNA mapping is therefore useful for the evaluation of genetic relatedness among individual isolates and facilitates the performance of .precise molecular epidemiology.
