2. The Role of Graphic Elements in the Accurate Portrayal of Instructional Design.

Abstract

This study explores the interpretation of two types of flow diagrams composed of different visual elements intended to communicate the same meaning. Using linear and cyclical diagrams, the study focused on whether, given a series of diagrams using linear elements and a series using cyclical elements, both types of visuals convey the same message to viewers in relation to instructional design information. Ninety-three college students were asked to read flow diagrams, either composed of boxes connected by straight lines or ovals connected by curved lines, and immediately write three to five adjectives describing the diagram. It was discovered that: (1) the two flow diagrams were not perceived as having significant differences in the message they conveyed; (2) both types were perceived as being appropriate for the display of instructional design models, although the ovals diagram was perceived as being more representative of the synergistic nature of the instructional design process; (3) the ovals diagram was interpreted by more participants as a means of sending a more interactive interdependent message; and (4) both diagrams elicited similar adjectives from the participants, and therefore neither was perceived as giving a more accurate portrayal of the instructional design process. 3. A Study of the Library Technical Assistant in Illinois.

Abstract

Seeking a better understanding of the position of the Library Technical Assistant (LTA) in the library world, this study presents an overview of the LTA in Illinois, exploring problems related to their training and employment and providing a general description of the LTA. The first phase of this examination consists of an identification of the existing junior college and college programs in Illinois for LTA training and a description of these programs, covering such areas as curriculum, class scheduling, and composition of faculty. These programs are compared to each other and to standards recommended by the American Library Association (ALA). Phase two of the study, based on questionnaire responses, describes the LTA as a student and then as a library employee, including such factors as age, sex, experience education, and reasons for entering the program. Recommendations arising from the study include more formalized training programs in line with ALA standards, more formal delineation of job duties in job descriptions, and a better understanding on the part of library administrators of the proper realm of duties of the LTA. 15. Chapter 9: The Development of Independent Auditory Training Activities for Severely and Profoundly Deaf Students Using Audiovisual Equipment

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to describe a set of independent listening activities using standard audiovisual equipment that were implemented in two speech classes with a total of 14 severely and profoundly deaf students ages 14-16. Discrimination, recognition, and comprehension tasks formed the basis of auditory activities that were used. Examples of tasks under each category are given as well as required equipment and samples of materials. The rationale for the need to devise independent activities using audiovisual equipment and individualized group speech instruction is explored. The characteristics of the equipment are analyzed in terms of suitability and adaptability to the hearing-impaired population.

Abstract

In Spring 2002 the University of Wyoming received NSF funding from the Division of Bioengineering and Environmental Systems to provide a meaningful design experience for University of Wyoming, College of Engineering students that will directly aid individuals with disabilities within the state of Wyoming. Other universities have participated in this very worthwhile program [1, 2, 3]. To achieve the program purpose, the following objectives were established: Provide engineering students multi-disciplinary, meaningful, community service design projects, Provide persons with disabilities assistive devices to empower them to achieve the maximum individual growth and development and afford them the opportunity to participate in all aspects of life as they choose, Provide engineering students education and awareness on the special needs and challenges of persons with disabilities, and Provide undergraduate engineering students exposure to the biomedical field of engineering. To accomplish these objectives the College of Engineering partnered with three organizations that provide education and service related to disability. Specifically, the college has joined with the Wyoming Institute for Disabilities (WIND) assistive technology program, Wyoming New Options in Technology (WYNOT) and their Sports and Outdoor Assistive Recreation (SOAR) project along with the university's Special Education program. In this paper we will describe how the program was created, developed, and its current status.
