In this article, we study the framing activities of Scandinavian climate-active non-governmental organizations (NGOs) during the early phases of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. Building on theories of focusing events, crisis exploitation and Ulrich Beck’s global risks, we develop and apply the concept of inter-risk framing contests to the case. Empirically, we analyse all climate- and corona-related tweeting activity of a broad selection of green NGOs in Denmark (17 NGOs, 874 tweets), Norway (22 NGOs, 2575 tweets) and Sweden (15 NGOs, 920 tweets), respectively. Methodologically, we employ quantitative text analysis to map socio-symbolic constellations of NGO-term relations using principal component analysis, while complementing this via online ethnographic observation to increase interpretative validity. As "big and broad" social media data continues to expand and become a more prevalent source for research, much remains to be understood about its epistemological and methodological implications. Drawing on an original data set of 12,732 research articles using social media data, we employ a novel dictionary-based approach to map the use of methods. Specifically, our approach draws on a combination of manual coding and embedding-enhanced query expansion. We cluster journals in groups of densely connected research communities to investigate how heterogeneous these groups are in terms of the methods used. First, our results indicate that research in this domain is largely organized by methods. Some communities tend to have a monomethod culture, and others combine methods in novel ways. Comparing practices across communities, we observe that computational methods have penetrated many research areas but not the research space surrounding ethnography. Second, we identify two core axes of variation-social sciences vs. computer science and methodological individualism vs. relationalism-that organize the domain as a whole, suggesting new methodological divisions and debates.

This paper contributes to political economic debates on the digital economy and software production by attending to the 'hybridity' of economic forms in digital markets. It adds to a nascent literature on hybridity by going close to the processes of code-production. Methodologically, we ambitiously combine in-situ ethnography with netnographic observation and qualitative interviews in a thickly multi-situated analysis of Danish proprietary app developers' use of the code-repository Github commonly associated with free and open source software (F/OSS) projects. By attending to the situated practices of everyday coding within 'app-centric media,' we show how proprietary developers engage in hybrid practices that both align, but are also partly at odds with the overarching frame of commercial exchanges in which they operate. We argue that these practices form part of four boundary crossing, salient modes of valuation within Danish app-development, which at once destabilize and maintain traditional boundaries between proprietary and F/OSS code. While our analysis concerns a Danish app economy, it serves to demonstrate how hybridity beyond commercial exchange forms a fundamental part of both software materiality, practices and values within situated digital markets. This, thereby, is crucial to grasping the valuations and mechanisms at work furthering the digital attention economy.

The current global crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, waterway pollution, and land-system change need far-reaching collective action, with major implications for future human-landscape relations. However, whereas there has been a radical acceleration in green solutions brought forward within science and technology, less attention has been paid to their social integration and long-term sustainability. Based on experiences with a large-scale Danish agri-food transition expert scenario exercise, this commentary scopes ideas for further research on how to accelerate a socially sensitive agri-food transition with clear visionary goals for radically new and sustainable human-landscape relations and forms of governance. We argue that this should be a process of making liveable landscapes, countryside spaces and cities, and one that 1) builds on trust, public embedment, and co-creation; 2) regards humans as part of nature; and 3) is inclusive and fair—locally and globally.

As science is becoming more interdisciplinary and potentially more data driven over time, it is important to investigate the changing specialty structures and the emerging intellectual patterns of research fields and domains. By employing a clustering-based network approach, we map the contours of a novel interdisciplinary domain - research using social media data - and analyze how the specialty structures and intellectual contributions are organized and evolve. We construct and validate a large-scale (N = 12,732) dataset of research papers using social media data from the Web of Science (WoS) database, complementing it with citation relationships from the Microsoft Academic Graph (MAG) database. We conduct cluster analyses in three types of citation-based empirical networks and compare the observed features with those generated by null network models. Overall, we find three core thematic research subfields - interdisciplinary socio-cultural sciences, health sciences, and geo-informatics - that designate the main epicenter of research interests recognized by this domain itself. Nevertheless, at the global topological level of all net-works, we observe an increasingly interdisciplinary trend over the years, fueled by publications not only from core fields such as communication and computer science , but also from a wide variety of fields in the social sciences, natural sciences, and technology. Our results characterize the spe-cialty structures of this domain at a time of growing emphasis on big social data, and we discuss the implications for indicating interdisciplinarity.

In Denmark, as with elsewhere in the world, Twitter has emerged as an important arena of public discussion on issues relating to COVID-19 pandemic, including the handling of the crisis by state authorities and health institutions. Based on approximately 140,000 tweets harvested from Danish Twitter in the period between 24 February and 28 April 2020, this report explores how tweeting about mis/trust on this digital platform can be understood as a kind of biopolitical nationalism. Combining computational and qualitative methods, we identify shifting performances of mis/trust and other affects on Danish Twitter, and suggest that this “affective public” plays a key role in the public response to the coronavirus crisis.
