Abstract

Purpose: The study's purpose was to develop practical guidelines for assessment and management of refusal of treatment by adults afflicted with cancer.Methods: The French Association for Supportive Care in Cancer and the French Society for Psycho-oncology gathered a task force that applied a consensus methodology to draft guidelines studied predisposing situations, the diagnosis, regulatory aspects, and the management of refusal of treatment by adults afflicted with cancer.Results: We propose five guidelines: (1) be aware of the conditions/profiles of patients most often associated with refusal of treatment so as to adequately underpin the care and support measures; (2) understand the complexity of the process of refusal and knowing how to accurately identify the type and the modalities of the refused treatments; (3) apply a way to systematically analyze refusal, thereby promoting progression from a situation of disaccord toward a consensual decision; (4) devise procedures, according to the legal context, to address refusal of treatment that safeguards the stakeholders in situations of sustained disaccord; and (5) know the indications for ethical collective decision-making.Conclusion: The quality of the relationship between patients and health professionals, and the communication between them are essential components involved in reaching a point of consent or refusal of treatment. A process of systematic analysis of refusal is recommended as the only way to ensure that all of the physiological, psychological, and contextual elements that are potentially involved are taken into account. 10. Silver recovery from polymetallic flotation tailings.

Abstract

This paper presents a conceptual evaluation of silver recovery with tailings polymetallic flotation. Minera San Cristobal ore from Bolivia contains significant amounts of Pb, Zn and Ag sulphide, resulting in good recoveries by flotation. Options are being considered to optimise the silver recovery from tailings flotation which would bring significant economic benefit because of the high Ag price and the large capacity of the plant. Experimental tests were performed with polymetallic flotation tailings assaying between 15 and 25 g/t Ag. Concentration by flotation was found to be the preferred primary recovery route. The concentrate assayed between 100 and 200 g/t Ag in rougher flotation, with 68% recovery for particles smaller than 75 micrometres. Pretreatment of the flotation tailings indicated high Ag recoveries could be achieved by flotation, producing a high-grade concentrate. Preliminary terms for the sale of flotation concentrate were discussed and processing of the flotation concentrate was considered to be more economical, as treatment on site had the advantages of requiring a small leaching and recovery facility. The treatment of flotation concentrate was performed by cyanide leaching rather than acid chloride leaching. Using the Factor Split tool, grades and recoveries at industrial level were predicted. 15. Startle cue-reactivity differentiates between light and heavy smokers.

Abstract

Aims It was assumed that the startle amplitude in smokers is reduced while viewing pictures of smoking, suggesting that smoking cues are appetitive. The goal of the present study was to investigate (i) whether smoking scenes induce appetitive cue effects in smokers, and (ii) whether smoking intensity is related to cue-reactivity. Design Smokers and non-smokers participated in a single session. Participants A total of 62 individuals participated: 36 smokers and 26 non-smokers. Measurements Participants took part in an acoustic affective startle experiment using standardized pleasant, neutral and unpleasant scenes from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS), as well as pictures of smoking. The effect of smoking cues was assessed by comparing neutral and smoking scenes (termed cue-related startle suppression, CSS). Findings While there was no overall difference between smokers and non-smokers regarding the CSS, light smokers showed significantly increased cue-reactivity towards smoking-related cues, as compared with heavy smokers and non-smokers. In addition, light smokers also displayed stronger appetitive responses towards positive stimuli. Conclusions These data support recent theories which discriminate between habit-based and incentive-based drug abuse. This distinction may have consequences for the assessment and treatment of drug-addicted subjects. Furthermore, incentive-based light smoking seems to have general effects on the reward system.
