Abstract

The detection of illicit materials is a critical task in the field of homeland security, as international trade has contributed to the increase of smuggling activities. Nonintrusive on-site inspections are crucial in this context, but the current active interrogation methods have limitations. Neutron-induced reactions have been used, but the measurement of gamma spectra is complex due to background noise. Active photon interrogation methods have also been overlooked but they are currently limited to actinides detection using photo-fission reactions. This work presents a novel method for the detection of illicit materials based on active photon interrogation and photo-neutron spectrometry. This approach extends the application of active photon interrogation by including the detection of conventional explosives, narcotics, and chemical weapons based on the use photo-nuclear reactions to determine the content of light elements such as nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon. Monte-Carlo codes are the main tool used to simulate this process for the application need. However, because of the lack in the present literature of measured neutron spectra, the experimental validation of the simulations is not straight forward. At present, benchmarking the Monte-Carlo codes seems to be the sole option for testing their ability to accurately simulate photo-neutron production and spectra for the nuclear reactions of interest. Simultaneously, we designed a test bench based on a linear accelerator to generate photons, induce photonuclear reactions, and acquire photo-neutron spectra. This study on the fundamental aspects of photo-neutron production lays the groundwork for a promising new detection method for illicit materials.

Abstract

Double-differential cross sections for light charged particle production (up to A=4) were measured in 96 MeV neutron-induced reactions, at TSL laboratory cyclotron in Uppsala (Sweden). Measurements for three targets, Fe, Pb, and U, were performed using two independent devices, SCANDAL and MEDLEY. The data were recorded with low energy thresholds and for a wide angular range (20-160 degrees). The normalization procedure used to extract the cross sections is based on the np elastic scattering reaction that we measured and for which we present experimental results. A good control of the systematic uncertainties affecting the results is achieved. Calculations using the exciton model are reported. Two different theoretical approches proposed to improve its predictive power regarding the complex particle emission are tested. The capabilities of each approach is illustrated by comparison with the 96 MeV data that we measured, and with other experimental results available in the literature., Comment: 21 pages, 28 figures

Abstract

In this work, we present the results of the first part of a research project aimed at offering a complete response to dosimeters providers and nuclear physicists’ demands for high-energy (6 – 9 MeV) photon beams for radiation protection purposes. Classical facilities allowing the production of high-energy photonic radiation (proton accelerators, nuclear reactors) are very rare and need large investment for development and use. A novel solution is proposed, consisting in the use of a medical linear accelerator, allowing a significant decrease of all costs.Using Monte Carlo simulations (MCNP5 and PENELOPE codes), a specifically designed electron-photon conversion target allowing for obtaining a high energy photon beam (with an average energy weighted by fluence of about 6 MeV) has been built for radiation protection purposes. Due to the specific design of the target, this “realistic” radiation protection high-energy photon beam presents a uniform distribution of air kerma rate at a distance of 1 m, over a 30 × 30 cm2 surface. Two graphite cavity ionizing chambers for ionometric measurements have been built. For one of these chambers, the charge collection volume has been measured allowing for its use as a primary standard. The second ionizing chamber is used as a transfer standard; as such it has been calibrated in a 60Co beam, and in the high energy photon beam for radiation protection.The measurements with these ionizing chambers allowed for an evaluation of the air kerma rate in the LINAC based high-energy photon beam for radiation protection: the values cover a range between 36 mGy/h and 210 mGy/h, compatible with radiation protection purposes.Finally, using Monte Carlo simulations, conversion coefficients from air kerma to dose equivalent quantities have been calculated in the range between 10 keV and 22.4 MeV, for the spectral distribution of the fluence corresponding to the beam produced by the linear accelerator of the LNE-LNHB.

25. In-target rare nuclei production rates with EURISOL single-stage configuration

Abstract

We conducted calculations of exotic nuclei production rates for 320 configurations of EURISOL (European Isotope Separation On-Line Radioactive Ion Beam Facility) direct spallation targets. The nuclei yields were evaluated using neutron generation-transport codes, completed with evolution calculations to account for nuclei decays and low energy neutron interactions. The yields were optimized for 11 selected elements (Li, Be, Ne, Mg, Ar, Ni, Ga, Kr, Sn, Hg, Fr) and 23 of their isotopes, as function of the target compositions and geometries as well as the incident proton beam energies. For the considered elements, we evaluated the yield distributions as functions of the charge and mass numbers using two different spallation models.

Abstract

International audience; The future SPIRAL-2 facility is mainly composed of a high-power superconducting driver LINAC, delivering a high-intensity deuteron, proton and heavy ions beams. The first two beams are particularly well suited to the construction of a neutron beam and irradiation facility called Neutrons for Science (NFS). Thick C and Be target-converters with incident deuteron beam will produce an intense white neutron spectrum, while thin 7Li target and incident proton beam allows generating quasi-monoenergetic neutrons. The 1–40MeV neutron energy range will be covered and characterized by very intense fluxes available. The primary ion beam characteristics (energy, time resolution, intensity, etc.) are adequate to create a neutron time-of-flight facility. Irradiation stations for neutron, proton and deuteron induced reactions could also be built in order to perform cross-sections measurements by activation techniques. In this paper we will discuss the potential of this new installation to investigate numerous topics, both in fundamental and applied physics. In particular, cross section measurements could be performed for different purposes like nuclear data evaluation, fission and fusion technology, Accelerator Driven Systems, nuclear medicine, astrophysics, etc.

Abstract

Double-differential cross sections for light-ion production (up to A=4) induced by 96 MeV neutrons have been measured for $^{nat}$Fe, $^{nat}$Pb and $^{nat}$U. The experiments have been performed at the The Svedberg Laboratory in Uppsala, using two independent devices, MEDLEY and SCANDAL. The recorded data cover a wide angular range (20º - 160º) with low energy thresholds. The work was performed within the HINDAS collaboration studying three of the most important nuclei for incineration of nuclear waste with accelerator-driven systems (ADS). The obtained cross section data are of particular interest for the understanding of the so-called pre-equilibrium stage in a nuclear reaction and are compared with model calculations performed with the GNASH, TALYS and PREEQ codes

Abstract

International audience; The process of particle emission in the pre‐equilibrium stage has a very important contribution in this energy region and several approaches have been proposed to explain it. Their prediction power must be tested using comparison with the data for a variety of configurations. Calculations have been done using the exciton model and two main approaches proposed to improve its predictive power for complex particle emission. Data reported in this work allow the extension to higher energies of databases that are now limited to energies around 60 MeV. Together with other experimental results available in the literature they allow a more global view on the capabilities of each approach. © 2005 American Institute of Physics

Abstract

Les réactions induites par des nucléons dans le domaine 20-200 MeV font depuis long temps l'objet d'une étude intensive. Le processus d'émission des particules dans la phase dite de pré-équilibre a une contribution très importante dans cette région et plusieurs approches théoriques ont été proposées afin de l'expliquer. Leur pouvoir prédictif doit être vérifiée par des comparaisons avec des données expérimentales dans diverses configurations. Les résultats expérimentaux présentés dans ce travail permettent l'extension vers les plus hautes énergies des bases de données, actuellement limitées aux énergies autour de 60 MeV. Réalisées au cyclotron du laboratoire TSL à Uppsala (Suède), les expériences ont comme objectif la mesure des sections efficaces doublement différentielles de production des particules chargées légères jusqu'au A=4 dans des réactions induites par des neutrons de 96 MeV sur trois systèmes, avec un seuil en énergie bas et dans un domaine angulaire important (20-160 degrés). La procédure de normalisation employée dans le calcul des sections efficaces utilise la réaction de diffusion élastique np. La détection des protons avec deux dispositifs expérimentaux indépendants (SCANDAL et MEDLEY) permet un bon control des erreurs systématiques affectant les résultats. Une étude systématique sur les prédictions des différents modèles théoriques est présentée dans la dernière partie de ce travail. A l'exception du modèle de simulation microscopique DYWAN, choisi pour son originalité dans le traitement des réactions nucléon-noyau, sont concernées généralement les approches implémentées dans des codes de simulation actuellement utilisés par la communauté scientifique., NIL

Abstract

A facility for detection of scattered neutrons in the energy interval 50–130 MeV, SCAttered Nucleon Detection AssembLy (SCANDAL), has recently been installed at the 20–180 MeV neutron beam facility of The Svedberg Laboratory, Uppsala. It is primarily intended for studies of elastic neutron scattering, but can be used for (n,p) and (n,d) reaction experiments as well. The performance of the spectrometer is illustrated in measurements of the (n,p) and (n,n) reactions on 1H and 12C. In addition, the neutron beam facility is described in some detail.

Abstract

Inelastic neutron scattering for (12)C, (58)Fe, (89)Y and (208)Pb have been measured at 96 MeV at the The Svedberg Laboratory in Uppsala and double-differential cross sections are reported. Data cover an excitation energy range of 0-45 MeV and the angular intervals are 28 - 58 degrees for (12)C, 26 - 65 degrees for (58)Fe and 26 - 52 degrees for (89)Y and (208)Pb. In this experiment, neutron detection is based on conversion to protons in an active scintillator converter. An analysis technique in which the neutron spectra have been obtained through a folding procedure using the response of the detector system has been used. The results are compared to and are in reasonable agreement with several model predictions and with inelastic neutron scattering data at 65 MeV from University of California, Davis, USA.

Abstract

Double-differential cross sections for neutron production were measured in 96-MeV neutron-induced reactions at The Svedberg Laboratory in Uppsala, Sweden. Measurements for Fe and Pb targets were performed using two independent setups: DECOI-DEMON, time-of-flight telescope dedicated to the detection of emitted neutrons with energies between a few and 50 MeV and CLODIA-SCANDAL device devoted to measuring emitted neutrons with energies above 40 MeV. Double-differential cross sections were measured for an angular range between 15 and 98 deg and with low-energy thresholds (approximate to 2 MeV). Angular and energy distributions and total neutron emission cross sections have been obtained from those measurements. Results have been compared with predictions given by different models included in several transport codes (MCNPX, GEANT, TALYS, PHITS, and DYWAN) and with other experimental data (the EXFOR database).

Abstract

Data on elastic scattering of 96 MeV neutrons from Fe-56, Y-89, and Pb-208 in the angular interval 10-70 degrees are reported. The previously published data on Pb-208 have been extended, as a new method has been developed to obtain more information from data, namely to increase the number of angular bins at the most forward angles. A study of the deviation of the zero-degree cross section from Wick's limit has been performed. It was shown that the data on Pb-208 are in agreement with Wick's limit while those on the lighter nuclei overshoot the limit significantly. The results are compared with modern optical model predictions, based on phenomenology and microscopic nuclear theory. The data on Fe-56, Y-89, and Pb-208 are in general in good agreement with the model predictions.

Abstract

Neutrons and light charged particles produced in 62.9 MeV proton-induced reactions on Pb-208 were measured during a single experiment performed at the CYCLONE facility in Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium). Two independent experimental set-ups were used to extract double differential cross-sections for neutrons, protons, deuterons, tritons, He-3 and alpha-particles. Charged particles were detected using a set of Si-Si-CsI telescopes from 25degrees to 155degrees, by step of 10 degrees. Neutrons were measured using shielded DeMoN counters, liquid NE213 scintillators, at 24degrees, 35degrees, 55degrees, 80degrees and 120degrees. These data allowed the determination of angle differential, energy differential and total production cross-sections. A comparison with theoretical calculations (MCNPX, FLUKA and TALYS) has been performed. It shows that the neutron and proton production rates are well predicted by MCNPX, using the INCL4 option. All the other codes underestimate the neutron production whereas they overestimate the proton one. For composite particles, which represent 17% of the charged particle total reaction cross-section, neither the shape nor the amplitude of the cross-sections are correctly predicted by the models.

49. Nucleon induced reactions at intermediate energies: New data at 96-MeV and theoretical status

Abstract

Double-differential cross sections for light charged particle production (up to A=4) were measured in 96 MeV neutron-induced reactions, at TSL laboratory cyclotron in Uppsala (Sweden). Measurements for three targets, Fe, Pb, and U, were performed using two independent devices, SCANDAL and MEDLEY. The data were recorded with low energy thresholds and for a wide angular range (20-160 degrees). The normalization procedure used to extract the cross sections is based on the np elastic scattering reaction that we measured and for which we present experimental results. A good control of the systematic uncertainties affecting the results is achieved. Calculations using the exciton model are reported. Two different theoretical approches proposed to improve its predictive power regarding the complex particle emission are tested. The capabilities of each approach is illustrated by comparison with the 96 MeV data that we measured, and with other experimental results available in the literature. Comment: 21 pages, 28 figures
