Abstract

We study the reconstruction process when the X-ray source translates along a finite straight line, the detector moving or not. This process, called linear tomosynthesis, induces a limited angle of view, which causes the vertical spatial resolution to be poor. To improve this resolution, we use iterative algebraic reconstruction methods, which are commonly used for tomographic reconstruction from a reduced number of projections. With noisy projections, such algorithms produce poor quality reconstructions. To prevent this, we use a first object prior knowledge, consisting of piecewise smoothness constraint. To reduce the computation time associated with both reconstruction and regularization processes, we introduce a second geometrical prior knowledge, based on the linear trajectory of the X-ray source. This linear source trajectory allows us to reconstruct a series of two-dimensional (2-D) planes in a fan organization of the volume. Using this adapted fan volume sampling scheme, we reduce the computation time by transforming the initial three-dimensional (3-D) problem into a series of 2-D problems. Obviously, the algorithm becomes directly parallelizable. Focusing on a particular region of interest becomes easier too. The regularization process can easily be implemented with this scheme. We test the algorithm using experimental projections. The quality of the reconstructed object is conserved, while the computation time is considerably reduced, even without any parallelization of the algorithm. Abstract

Through micro Laue tomography analysis, the depth-resolved cartographies (i) of NiO grains in a solid oxide fuel cell sample and (ii) of the full tensor of the deviatoric strain into a slice of a Ge sample are obtained., The relevance of micro Laue diffraction tomography (µ-LT) to investigate heterogeneous polycrystalline materials has been studied. For this purpose, a multiphase solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) electrode composite made of yttria-stabilized zirconia and nickel oxide phases, with grains of about a few micrometres in size, has been analyzed. In order to calibrate the Laue data and to test the technique’s sensitivity limits, a monocrystalline germanium sample of about 8 × 4 µm in cross-section size has also been studied through µ-LT. The SOFC and germanium Laue diffraction pattern analyses are compared and discussed. The indexing procedure has been successfully applied for the analysis of the germanium Laue data, and the depth-resolved two-dimensional cartographies of the full deviatoric strain tensor components were obtained. The development and application of an original geometrical approach to analyze the SOFC Laue data allowed the authors to resolve grains with sizes of about 3 µm and to identify their individual Laue patterns; by indexing those Laue patterns, the crystalline phases and orientations of most of the grains identified through the geometrical approach could be resolved.

Abstract

Here, white X-ray μ-beam Laue diffraction is developed and applied to investigate elastic strain distributions in three-dimensional (3D) materials, more specifically, for the study of strain in Cu 10 μm diameter-80 μm deep through-silicon vias (TSVs). Two different approaches have been applied: (i) two-dimensional μ-Laue scanning and (ii) μ-beam Laue tomography. 2D μ-Laue scans provided the maps of the deviatoric strain tensor integrated along the via length over an array of TSVs in a 100 μm thick sample prepared by Focused Ion Beam. The μ-beam Laue tomography analysis enabled to obtain the 3D grain and elemental distribution of both Cu and Si. The position, size (about 3 μm), shape, and orientation of Cu grains were obtained. Radial profiles of the equivalent deviatoric strain around the TSVs have been derived through both approaches. The results from both methods are compared and discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; The collapsing of C-60 into polycrystalline diamond has been studied after nonhydrostatic pressurization at ambient temperature using x-ray scattering computed tomography. Using this selective structural probe we provide evidence of concentric coexistence of "compressed graphite'' (d(00l) similar to 3.09-3.11 angstrom), s p(2)-graphitelike phase (d(00l) similar to 3.35-3.42 angstrom), and s p(3)-like amorphous carbon surrounding polycrystalline diamond (a similar to 3.56-3.59 angstrom). The so-called "compressed graphite'' exhibits a collapsed c axis and is textured with disordered layers. This latter phase is better described as a short interlayered carbon phase with buckled s p(2)-s p(3) layers with possible interlayer bonding. Additionally, our 3D maps of phase distribution and of the residual stress retained in the polycrystalline diamond phase support the importance of stressed synthesis conditions for diamond formation.

Abstract

Modem synchrotron radiation (SR) sources have dramatically fostered the use of SR-based X-ray imaging. The relevant information such as density, chemical composition, chemical states, structure, and crystallographic perfection is mapped in two, or, increasingly, in three dimensions. The development of nano-science requires pushing spatial resolution down towards the nanoscale.The present article describes a selection of hard X-ray imaging and microanalysis techniques that emerged over the last few years, by taking advantage of the flux and coherence of the SR beams, as well as exploiting the advances in X-ray optics and detectors, and the increased possibilities of computers (memory, speed). Examples are given to illustrate the opportunities associated with the use of these techniques, and a number of recent references are provided.
