This study investigated the potential of employing plantain leaves as a natural bio-based sorbent for crude oil spill polluted seawater remediation. Type L9(34) Taguchi orthogonal array technique was used to evaluate the effect of four independent bio-sorption factors at three different levels (crude oil initial concentration (X1 7.8, 11.5 and 15.6 g/L), seawater-crude oil temperature (X2 25, 35 and 45 °C), bio-sorbent dosage (X3 1, 2 and 3 g) and bio-sorbent particle size (X4 1.18, 2.36 and 4.72 mm) on two response indices (bio-sorption efficiency (%) and bio-sorption capacity (g/g)). Taguchi optimization technique, numerical-desirability index function optimization technique and a proposed optimization method were utilized to determine the optimum bio-sorption factors needed for the optimum bio-sorption efficiency and bio-sorption capacity. The results demonstrated that the crude oil bio-sorption efficiency of the plantain leaves was significantly influenced by X1, X3 and X4 and the bio-sorption capacity was mainly influenced by X1 and X3. The optimum bio-sorption efficiency and the optimum bio-sorption capacity were 99.05 % and 12.82 g/g, respectively, obtained at optimum combination of factors and levels of X11 (7.8 g/L), X33 (3 g) and X41 (1.18 mm) for bio-sorption efficiency and X13 (15.6 g/L) X31 (1 g) for bio-sorption capacity. The Freundlich and Dubinin-Rudeshkevich isotherm models best explain the equilibrium bio-sorption data, while the pseudo-second order kinetic model best describes the bio-sorption kinetics. The bio-sorptive remediation mechanism followed dual mechanism of physical and chemical bio-sorption and the mass transfer controlled by film diffusion. The maximum bio-sorption capacity (Kf) was 14.0 gg-1.

This study reports the hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of microalgae Spirulina platenesis in the presence of alcohol or formic acid co-solvents. HTL runs are performed in a 1.8-L batch reactor at 300 °C using an alcohol (methanol and ethanol) or formic acid co-solvent. Consequently, hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of resultant algal biocrude is performed at 350 °C for 2 h under high hydrogen pressure (~725 psi) using the Ru/C catalyst. The HTL results are compared with the control HTL run performed in water only. The results of the study show that the addition of co-solvents leads to a 30–63% increased biocrude yield over the control HTL run. Formic acid results in a 59.0% yield of biocrude, the highest amongst all co-solvents tested. Resultant biocrudes from formic acid-assisted and ethanol-assisted HTL runs have 21.6% and 3.8–11.0% higher energy content, respectively, than that of the control run. However, that of the methanol-assisted HTL results in biocrude with 4.2–9.0% lower energy density. Viscosity of biocrude from methanol- or ethanol-assisted HTL is higher than the control HTL but formic acid-assisted HTL results in a less viscous biocrude product. In addition, the HDO study leads to a 40.6% yield of upgraded oil, which is characterized by a higher net energy content and lower O/C and N/C ratios when compared to the initial HTL biocrude.

With the issue of plastic waste persisting and the need for more sustainable solutions to the ever‐increasing demand for lightweight and durable plastic products, this review has become imminent and compelling. Poly (butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) (PBAT) is a biodegradable polymer with exceptional film‐forming ability resembling those of low‐density polyethylene. PBAT has a huge advantage for packaging applications due to its remarkably high elongation at break, giving it a good processing window for its application in packaging. However, certain defiant intrinsic properties stand in the way of its full commercialization. The development of blends and biocomposites of PBAT has, therefore, become imperative for complementing its properties and producing a superior material. This paper focuses on the recent developments in preparing PBAT‐based blends and biocomposites with superior mechanical, barrier, and antimicrobial properties and, most importantly, has also investigated how the development of these blends and biocomposites impacts the biodegradation rate of PBAT. It also highlights the possible synthesis of bio‐based PBAT and the commercialization, market trends, and prospects of PBAT‐based materials for flexible, rigid packaging, and other industrial applications compared with biodegradable alternatives. The situation of Nigerian educational system and quality is becoming worrisome as her policy is more focused on the quantitative than qualitative aspect of institutional development. Government has recently increased the quantity of higher institutions in the country without giving attention to the carrying capacity, learning conditions and the budget allocated to existing higher institutions. Educationist and elites are becoming more troubled as no single University in Nigeria is among the top fifty (50) Universities in Africa, and none is ranked among the top three thousand (3,000) universities in the world. The UNESCO recommendation of using twenty six percent (26%) of her national budget to finance the education of third world countries is a far dream from realization in Nigeria. Nigeria is still devoting less than three percent of her budget to her educational sector. These negative indices have contributed to the huge capital flight out of Nigeria due to Nigerians trooping abroad to acquire quality education. This paper shall conceptualize quality education and national development, note indices of quality education, factors militating against quality education in Nigeria, draw a nexus between quality education and national development, and seek for ways of enhancing the quality of education in Nigeria. The paper is aimed at improving the quality of education in Nigeria and reducing capital flight resulting from Nigerians studying abroad.

Indiscriminate waste discharge into water bodies has increased the level of water pollution via anthropogenic activities. Hence the need for the development of sustainable and environmentally benign nanomaterials has the potential for wastewater treatment. Rice husk activated carbon (RHAC) prepared by orthophosphoric acid activation was successfully loaded with freshly prepared ZnO nanoparticles by a bottom-up approach via precipitation method resulting in the RHAC-ZnO-NC. RHAC-ZnO-NC's mineralogy with 72% zincite was determined by XRD, morphology by SEM, and the functional group by FTIR. The physicochemical parameters showed surface area 615.2 m2 g-1, pH (pzc) (6.62), pH (6.53), bulk density (0.88 g/cm3), ash content (18.45%), and volatile matter (58.08%). The porosity was determined by iodine number. Boehm titration was carried out for oxygen-bearing functional group determination. The study substantiated RHAC-ZnO-NC as a promising material for adsorption and photocatalytic degradation.

The study investigated adult learner numeracy as related to gender and performance in arithmetic among 32 Nigerian adult learners from one government accredited adult literacy centre in Lagos State using the quantitative research method within the blueprint of descriptive survey design. Data collected were analysed using the descriptive statistics of percentages, mean, and standard deviation and inferential statistics of factor analysis, independent samples t-test, and multiple regression analysis. Findings revealed that numeracy skill assessed by the numeracy self-assessment scale was a multi-dimensional construct (numeracy in everyday life, numeracy in workplace, and numeracy in mathematical tasks). Adult learners showed average numeracy strength as gender differences in perception of numeracy skills and performance in arithmetic among adult learners reached zero-tolerance level. Numeracy in workplace and numeracy in mathematical tasks made statistically significant contributions to the variance in adult learners' performance in arithmetic. Based on this base line study, it was thus, recommended that future studies in Nigeria should investigate adult learners' numeracy skills using more robust and psychometrically sound instruments such as the Adult Literacy and Life Skills Survey (ALLS) and the International Adult Literacy Survey (IALS).

In this study, the performance potential of oil palm fruit mesocarp fiber (OPFMF) as a natural bio-adsorbent for the adsorptive crude oil bio-sequestration from seawater as well as the effect of four bio-adsorption factors (initial crude oil concentration (A), oil-seawater temperature (B), bio-adsorbent dosage (C), and bio-adsorbent particle size (D) together with the factors and performance optimization were determined using the Taguchi orthogonal array of four factors and three levels (L9(34)) design. Bio-sequestration efficiency (%) and bio-adsorption capacity (g/g) were performance evaluation indices. The adsorptive bio-sequestration mechanism was determined by fitting the adsorptive data to known kinetic and isotherm models. The percentage contributions of the factors that significantly impacted the bio-sequestration efficiency are, D (58.77%), A (37.82%), and C (3.29%) factors, as well as C (73.67%) and A (22.62%) factors for the bio-adsorption capacity. An optimum bio-sequestration efficiency of 97.25 ± 0.27% was obtained at an optimum significant factors' combination of A (7.80 g/L), C (3.00 g), and D (1.18 mm), while an optimum bio-adsorption capacity of 12.66 ± 0.06 g/g was achieved at an optimum significant factors' combination of A (15.6 g/L) and C (1.00 g). The adsorptive bio-sequestration followed the Dubinin-Rudeshkevich isotherm (maximum bio-adsorption capacity ( Q m ) found to be 0.3070 mole/g) and pseudo-second-order kinetics, with the liquid film diffusion being the major rate-controlling step and chemisorption being the predominant adsorptive bio-sequestration mechanism. Grounded in communicated narrative sense-making (CNSM) theory and communication theory of resilience (CTR), the current study investigated how women narratively constructed resilience surrounding pregnancy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Given the adverse effects of stress on pregnant individuals and their babies, it is important to understand the triggers and process of resilience in this context. We interviewed 21 cisgender women who were pregnant during the COVID-19 pandemic to solicit their stories of stress and resilience. Findings revealed that pregnant women managed structural, informational, and interpersonal stressors unique to the COVID-19 pandemic. They engaged in re-storying to reconcile the gap between their expected pregnancy, fueled by the U.S. master narrative of pregnancy and birth, and their lived pregnancy during a pandemic. Participants demonstrated narrative resilience through reconnecting, reframing, and recentering. These findings advance theorizing in communicated resilience by centering CNSM as the sense-making process of enacting resilience and recognizing the importance and burden of resilience during pregnancy. Practical applications are explored such as contributing to narrative-informed programming, interventions, and education efforts regarding future health crises. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dual antiplatelet treatment (DAPT) upon endovascular stenting to prevent acute thrombotic reocclusions is an universally accepted practice for postinterventional management of PAD patients. However, the optimal period of time for DAPT upon endovascular stenting is not known.Methods: In the current nonrandomized, retrospective monocentric study, we evaluated the duration of DAPT upon endovascular stenting. A total of 261 endovascular SFA and iliac stenting procedures were performed on 214 patients and these patients were subdivided into a short (4–6 weeks) or a prolonged (8–12 weeks) DAPT regime group. More than 65% of the patients included were male, approximately 35% were diabetic, and 61% had a history of smoking. Of all the patients, 90% exhibited a Rutherford stage 2–3, and approximately half of the patients had a moderate-to-severe calcified target lesion with a length of >13 cm. Major safety end points were defined as any bleeding, compartment syndrome, and ischemic events. In addition to this, patency, all-cause mortality, as well as amputation were followed up over a period of 12 months upon intervention.Results: Twelve months after endovascular stenting, primary patency in our cohort was comparable between the groups (83.94% short vs 79.8% long DAPT, P>0.05). Major bleeding occurred in 18 cases without any difference between the groups (P>0.05). In addition, during the 12-month follow-up, 6 (3.4%) patients in the short and 3 (3.5%) in the prolonged DAPT regime suffered a stroke/transient ischemic attack (P>0.05). In addition, there was no difference regarding mortality and amputation rate comparing short vs prolonged DAPT regime in a 12-month follow-up.Conclusion: In the current cohort, prolonged DAPT after endovascular stenting had no beneficial effect on the outcome in a 12-month follow-up. The different interventional procedures were compared in terms of overall and amputation-free survival, as well as patency in a 1-year follow-up (Kaplan–Meier analysis).Results: The study demonstrated a primary revascularization success of >98% in all groups. Improved expansion of stents using high-pressure implantation technique with subsequent antiplatelet therapy has improved patient outcome regarding the incidence of subacute stent thrombosis, bleeding complications and restenosis. Whether high-pressure implantation per se guarantees adequate stent expansion remains unclear. The aim of the study was to determine (1) stent expansion after high-pressure implantation technique and (2) whether stent expansion influences rate of target lesion revascularization within 6 months of follow-up. One hundred Palmaz-Schatz stents were implanted in 98 lesions (91 native vessels, 7 graft vessels) of 94 patients using high-pressure implantation technique (balloon pressure 12-20 atm). Stent expansion was investigated using intravascular ultrasound imaging (IVUS). Clinical follow-up of the patients was performed for 6 months. After implantation, stent/mean reference ratio was 0.81 +/- 0.16. Noncompliant balloons used for implantation were chosen by angiographic criteria. Mean balloon/reference ratio was 1.08 +/- 0.22; therefore balloons were not undersized. Additional balloon dilataion using higher pressures and/or larger balloons based on IVUS criteria and subsequent IVUS measurements was performed in 52 patients (55%); in these patients, stent expansion improved from 79 +/- 16 to 91 +/- 15% (mean +/- SD) of average reference areas (p < 0.002). Within the 6 months' clinical follow-up, target lesion revascularization was performed in 19 patients (20%). The only prognostic factors for the development of in-stent restenosis requiring target lesion revascularization were the vessel size (p < 0.05) and the extent of plaque distal to the stents (p < 0.05). Implantation of Palmaz-Schatz stents using high-pressure technique does not guarantee adequate stent expansion. Additional dilatation with higher pressures and/or larger balloons improves stent expansion. The size of the stented vessel and the extent of plaque at the distal stent end (residual outflow stenosis) but not the degree of stent expansion were predictors for target lesion revascularization within 6 months' follow-up.

The G-protein-coupled receptor P2Y12 is a central mediator of platelet activation and aggregation but has also been linked to platelet-independent vascular disease. Ticagrelor is an oral P2Y12 antagonist that is used as a standard treatment in patients after acute myocardial infarction. However, the effects of ticagrelor on advanced atherosclerosis have not been investigated.Materials and methods: Twenty-week-old apolipoprotein-E-deficient mice received standard chow or standard chow supplemented with 0.15% ticagrelor (approximately 270 mg/kg/day) for 25 weeks. The lesion area was evaluated in the aortic sinus by Movat’s pentachrome staining and lesion composition, thickness of the fibrous cap, and size of the necrotic core evaluated by morphometry. RAW 264.7 macrophages were serum starved and treated with ticagrelor in vitro for the detection and quantification of apoptosis. In addition, oxLDL uptake in RAW 264.7 macrophages was evaluated.Results: A trend toward the reduction of total lesion size was detected. However, data did not reach the levels of significance (control, n=11, 565,881 µm2 [interquartile range {IQR} 454,778–603,925 µm2] versus ticagrelor, n=13, 462,595 µm2 [IQR 379,740–546,037 µm2]; P=0.1). A significant reduction in the relative area of the necrotic core (control, n=11, 0.46 [IQR 0.4–0.51] versus ticagrelor, n=13, 0.34 [IQR 0.31–0.39]; P=0.008), and a significant increase in fibrous caps thickness (control, n=11, 3.7 µm [IQR 3.4–4.2 µm] versus ticagrelor, n=13, 4.7 [IQR 4.3–5.5 µm], P=0.04) were seen in ticagrelor-treated mice. In vitro studies demonstrated a reduction in apoptotic RAW 264.7 macrophages (control 0.07±0.03 versus ticagrelor 0.03±0.03; P=0.0002) when incubated with ticagrelor. Uptake of oxLDL in RAW 264.7 was significantly reduced when treated with ticagrelor (control 9.2 [IQR 5.3–12.9] versus ticagrelor 6.4 [IQR 2.5–9.5], P=0.02).Conclusion: The present study demonstrates for the first time a plaque-stabilizing effect of ticagrelor in a model of advanced vascular disease, potentially induced by a reduction of oxLDL uptake or an inhibition of apoptosis as seen in vitro. Most of the studies investigating the effects of atherosclerosis focused on early atherosclerotic lesions, whereas lesions in human disease, at the time when medical treatment is started, are already well established. Therefore, we set up a model of advanced atherosclerosis and investigated the effects of olmesartan medoxomil, amlodipine besylate, and the combination of both on atherosclerotic lesion size and lesion composition.Materials and methods: Olmesartan medoxomil (1 mg/kg/day), amlodipine besylate (1.5 mg/kg/day), and the combination of both was added to chow and was fed to apolipoprotein E-deficient (ApoE-/-) mice at 25 weeks of age. Mice were sacrificed after 25 weeks of drug administration and perfused with formalin. Innominate arteries were dissected out and paraffin embedded. Serial sections were generated, and lesion sizes and their composition – such as minimal thickness of the fibrous cap, size of the necrotic core, and presence of calcification – were analyzed.
