The extent to which solid‐state volume diffusion modifies rare earth element (REE) abundances in accessory minerals during high‐temperature metamorphism governs our ability to link recorded trace‐element compositions to particular thermal events. We model diffusion of REE in zircon under different temperature–time conditions and show that, for both short‐lived (e.g. 1100°C for 1–5 Ma) and more prolonged (e.g. 1050°C for 10–30 Ma or 1000°C for 200 Ma) episodes of ultra‐high‐temperature (UHT) metamorphism, REE diffusion in igneous zircon is sufficiently rapid for REE in a ~50‐μm grain to equilibrate with the new metamorphic mineral assemblage of the host rock. By contrast, unless diffusion is accelerated by recrystallization, the presence of fluids or other processes at temperatures below 900°C zircon will largely retain its original pre‐metamorphic REE abundance pattern, even when the thermal event is long lived (≥100 Ma). Where volume diffusion is dominant, for instance, in the absence of a fluid phase, the sensitivity of REE mobility to temperature can help constrain the temperature–time path of high‐grade metamorphic rocks. Modelling of well‐characterized natural samples from the regional‐scale aureole surrounding the Rogaland Igneous Complex (RIC) in SW Norway shows that variations in REE concentration patterns in zircon indicate a T–t evolution that is consistent with independent P–T–t estimates for regional metamorphism based on phase equilibrium modelling (850–950°C at 7–8 kbar for ~100 Ma). Greater modification of REE abundance patterns in zircons within 2 km of the RIC contact, however, indicates that UHT conditions persisted for ~150 Ma close to the intrusion, with a temperature of ~1100°C for 1–5 Ma at the RIC contact. Thermal modelling suggests that the inferred T–t histories of samples from different distances from the RIC contact are best explained if the complex was emplaced incrementally over 1–5 Ma. We present 40Ar/39Ar ages and boron isotopes of tourmalines from a quartz-tourmaline intrusion cross-cutting the Hadean detrital-zircon-bearing metasedimentary rocks from the Mt. Alfred and Brooking Hills localities of the Illaara Greenstone Belt, Western Australia. Concordant 40Ar/39Ar plateau ages on the tourmalines at Mt. Alfred give a weighted mean age of 2935 ± 9 Ma (2σ). These results are the first reported Archean 40Ar/39Ar ages directly obtained on tourmaline, and provide a minimum depositional age for this sequence, placing constraints on the depositional timing of detrital Hadean zircons to between 2935 ± 9 Ma and c.a. 3250 Ma (youngest detrital zircon age in sequence). This is the last known occurrence of abundant detrital Hadean zircons having been directly deposited in a sedimentary sequence, and thus suggests that most Hadean zircon sources have been exhausted by this time. The 2935 ± 9 Ma tourmalines occur within a quartz-tourmaline intrusion with associated stratiform layers and veins, inferred to have grown during a hydrothermal fluid circulation event. A younger generation of tourmalines from the Brooking Hills, 30 km south of Mt. Alfred yielded concordant 40Ar/39Ar plateau ages with a weighted mean age of 2624 ± 16 Ma. These tourmalines occur within and along the margins of post-kinematic quartz veins, parallel to the foliation fabric and marks the end stage of high temperature tectono-thermal events within the Illaara Greenstone Belt. The retention of 2935 ± 9 Ma tourmaline ages within the Illaara Greenstone Belt shows that the K/Ar system of tourmaline remained closed throughout repeated upper-greenschist metamorphic events (∼450 °C) between the ages of c.a. 2930 to 2630 Ma in contrast to muscovite recording plateau ages of about 2600 Ma. Here, we present results of the first 40Ar/39Ar dating of osumilite, a high‐T mineral that occurs in some volcanic and high‐grade metamorphic rocks. The metamorphic osumilite studied here is from a metapelitic rock within the Rogaland–Vest Agder Sector, Norway, an area that experienced regional granulite facies metamorphism and subsequent contact metamorphism between 1,100 Ma and 850 Ma. The large grain size (~1 cm) of osumilite in the studied rock, which preserves a nominally anhydrous assemblage, increases the potential for large portions of individual grains to have remained essentially unaffected by the effects of diffusive argon loss, potentially preserving prograde ages. Step‐heating diffusion experiments yielded a maximum activation energy of ~461 kJ/mol and a pre‐exponential factor of ~8.34 × 108 cm2/s for Ar diffusion in osumilite. These parameters correspond to a relatively high closure temperature of ~620°C for a cooling rate of 10°C/Ma in an osumilite crystal with a 175 µm radius. Fragments of osumilite separated from the sample preserve a range of ages between c. 1,070 and 860 Ma. The oldest ages are inferred to date the growth of coarse‐grained osumilite during prograde granulite facies regional metamorphism, which pre‐date contact metamorphism that has historically been ascribed to the growth of osumilite in the region. The majority of fragments record ages between c. 920 and 860 Ma, inferred to reflect the growth of osumilite and/or diffusive argon loss during contact metamorphism. The retention of old 40Ar/39Ar dates was facilitated by the low diffusivity of Ar in osumilite (i.e. a closed system), large grain sizes, and anhydrous metamorphic conditions. The ability to date osumilite with the 40Ar/39Ar method provides a valuable new thermochronometer that may constrain the timing and duration of high‐T magmatic and metamorphic events. • 1560 Ma TTG suite and migmatised mafic source exposed in NE Australia. • 'High-pressure' TTG generated at a depth of 25–35 km. • Field observations and trace-element modelling point to fluid-fluxed melting. • TTG chemical diversity reflects variable hydration, not depth. Across the Archaean to Proterozoic transition, the composition of newly-formed felsic continental crust changed from tonalite–trondhjemite–granodiorite (TTG) to calc-alkaline granitoid, possibly coinciding with the emergence of plate tectonics. Nevertheless, TTG suites were sporadically produced in Proterozoic and Phanerozoic orogenic belts, and such occurrences may provide petrological and tectonic insights into the formation of ancient continents. Here we demonstrate that the ca 1560 Ma Forest Home TTG plutonic suite in the Georgetown Inlier, NE Australia, was derived from partial melting of spatially-associated mafic rocks in a post-collisional setting. The studied TTG rocks have a 'high-pressure' geochemical signature, with elevated Sr, low heavy rare earth element and low high field strength element contents. Established petrogenetic models suggest they were derived by partial melting either of hydrated basaltic crust at >70 km depth or enriched lithospheric mantle, or by fractionation of lower-pressure mafic magmas. Using phase equilibrium calculations and trace-element modelling, we show that the geochemical signature of the Georgetown TTG likely resulted from fluid-fluxed crustal melting at relatively shallow depths (25–35 km), consistent with field observations and the inferred metamorphic evolution of the inlier. Our results suggest that the chemical variability of TTGs can reflect the variable availability of fluids rather than depth of melting, which has implications for tectonic processes responsible for the formation of early continental crust. The final assembly of the Mesoproterozoic supercontinent Nuna was marked by the collision of Laurentia and Australia at 1.60 Ga, which is recorded in the Georgetown Inlier of NE Australia. Here, we decipher the metamorphic evolution of this final Nuna collisional event using petrostructural analysis, major and trace element compositions of key minerals, thermodynamic modelling, and multi‐method geochronology. The Georgetown Inlier is characterised by deformed and metamorphosed 1.70–1.62 Ga sedimentary and mafic rocks, which were intruded by c. 1.56 Ga old S‐type granites. Garnet Lu–Hf and monazite U–Pb isotopic analyses distinguish two major metamorphic events (M1 at c. 1.60 Ga and M2 at c. 1.55 Ga), which allows at least two composite fabrics to be identified at the regional scale—c. 1.60 Ga S1 (consisting in fabrics S1a and S1b) and c. 1.55 Ga S2 (including fabrics S2a and S2b). Also, three tectono‐metamorphic domains are distinguished: (a) the western domain, with S1 defined by low‐P (LP) greenschist facies assemblages; (b) the central domain, where S1 fabric is preserved as medium‐P (MP) amphibolite facies relicts, and locally as inclusion trails in garnet wrapped by the regionally dominant low‐P amphibolite facies S2 fabric; and (c) the eastern domain dominated by upper amphibolite to granulite facies S2 foliation. In the central domain, 1.60 Ga MP–medium‐T (MT) metamorphism (M1) developed within the staurolite–garnet stability field, with conditions ranging from 530–550°C at 6–7 kbar (garnet cores) to 620–650°C at 8–9 kbar (garnet rims), and it is associated with S1 fabric. The onset of 1.55 Ga LP–high‐T (HT) metamorphism (M2) is marked by replacement of staurolite by andalusite (M2a/D2a), which was subsequently pseudomorphed by sillimanite (M2b/D2b) where granite and migmatite are abundant. P–T conditions ranged from 600 to 680°C and 4–6 kbar for the M2b sillimanite stage. 1.60 Ga garnet relicts within the S2 foliation highlight the progressive obliteration of the S1 fabric by regional S2 in the central zone during peak M2 metamorphism. In the eastern migmatitic complex, partial melting of paragneiss and amphibolite occurred syn‐ to post‐ S2, at 730–770°C and 6–8 kbar, and at 750–790°C and 6 kbar, respectively. The pressure–temperature–deformation–time paths reconstructed for the Georgetown Inlier suggest a c. 1.60 Ga M1/D1 event recorded under greenschist facies conditions in the western domain and under medium‐P and medium‐T conditions in the central domain. This event was followed by the regional 1.56–1.54 Ga low‐P and high‐T phase (M2/D2), extensively recorded in the central and eastern domains. Decompression between these two metamorphic events is ascribed to an episode of exhumation. The two‐stage evolution supports the previous hypothesis that the Georgetown Inlier preserves continental collisional and subsequent thermal perturbation associated with granite emplacement. The final assembly of the Mesoproterozoic supercontinent Nuna was marked by the collision of Laurentia (North America) and Australia between c. 1.6 and 1.53 Ga. The final suture of Nuna has been identified in NE Australia, where the Proterozoic Georgetown Inlier represents the accreted leading edge of Laurentia. However, the structural and metamorphic evolution of the Georgetown Inlier remains uncertain. Here we investigate the orogenic evolution of this final Nuna collisional event using multi-scale petrostructural analysis, thermodynamic modelling, and geochronology. The Georgetown Inlier is characterised by c. 1.7 to 1.65 Ga metasedimentary and metabasic rocks that have been multiply deformed and metamorphosed, and intruded by c. 1.55 Ga S-type granites. Two pervasive fabrics (S1 and S2) are preserved within low strain domains of retrograde greenschist-facies foliations (S3 and S4). S1 is defined by greenschist-facies assemblages in the west, and by amphibolite-facies assemblages in the central Inlier, while S2 is defined by low-pressure and high-temperature mineral assemblages in the central and eastern inlier. Microstructural analysis combined with mineral chemistry and thermodynamic modelling in the central Inlier suggest prograde syn-S1 garnet growth in staurolite–garnet metapelites occurred at 530–550 ̊C at 5.4–6.4 kbar (core) to 620–660 ̊C at 8.6–9.8 kbar (rim). Garnet Lu–Hf geochronology dates this MP–MT metamorphism at c. 1.6 Ga. During the development of S2, staurolite was replaced by andalusite (M2a), which was pseudomorphed by sillimanite (M2b) in the eastern region, where granites are abundant. Calculations suggest 600–680 ̊C and 4–6 kbar for the sillimanite stage, and syn-S2 monazite yields c. 1.55–1.53 Ga U–Pb ages. Garnet in sillimanite-bearing metapelites is a MP–MT relict as its composition is reproduced in the staurolite stability field and it has a Lu–Hf age of c. 1.6 Ga. Field relationships suggest that the low–pressure stage was part of the regional thermal event associated with granite emplacement between c. 1.56–1.54 Ga. Some S-type granites record retrograde greenschist-facies foliations, and were emplaced late- to post-S2. In the eastern migmatitic complex, partial melting of paragneiss and amphibolite occurred early-, syn-, to post-S2. Peak conditions were estimated at 700–820 ̊C and 7.8–8.4 kbar in paragneiss, and at 750–890 ̊C and 7.0–8.4 kbar in garnet-free amphibolite.The P–T–d–t paths reconstructed for the Georgetown Inlier thus suggest an early deformation phase (D1) under MP–MT conditions at 1.6 Ga and a LP–HT metamorphic overprint during D2 between c. 1.56 and 1.53 Ga. These results support that the Georgetown Inlier records collisional orogenesis related to the final assembly of Nuna at 1.6 Ga, whereas the subsequent LP–HT overprint is interpreted as orogenic collapse. Highlights • We study the age and metamorphic evolution of (meta)gabbros from the Albany–Fraser orogeny. • The rocks record common magmatic and peak metamorphic conditions of ∼900–950 °C and ∼7 kbar. • The gabbros crystallised at ca 1300 Ma, synchronous with high-grade metamorphism. • The Fraser Zone probably represents the deep levels of a backarc. Abstract The Fraser Zone is a major lithotectonic domain of the Albany–Fraser Orogen, Western Australia, which records Proterozoic modification of the margin of the Archean Yilgarn Craton. The Fraser Zone is volumetrically dominated by gabbroic rocks and their metamorphosed equivalents. However, little is known of the pressure–temperature–time (P–T–t) history or the geodynamic setting of these mafic rocks. When considered within the context of existing P–T constraints from spatially-associated metapelitic rocks, modelled phase equilibria suggest that both the unmetamorphosed gabbros and the granulite facies metagabbroic rocks equilibrated at 950–900 °C and ∼7 kbar, interpreted to record the conditions of magmatic crystallisation and peak metamorphism, respectively. These data support the view that mafic magmatism was the thermal driver for high- T , low- P granulite facies metamorphism. The absence of garnet from the metagabbroic rocks, and the lack of evidence for its former presence (i.e., as inclusions), argues that, during metamorphism, the rocks never reached pressures above those they attained at the thermal peak. Coronæ of zircon around ilmenite in the magmatic rocks reflect a local supply of Zr as it exsolved from ilmenite, permitting earlier growth of zircon around ilmenite than elsewhere during melt crystallisation. U–Pb dating of coronal zircon (1315 ± 5 Ma) and a discrete magmatic zircon grain isolated from ilmenite (1296 ± 5 Ma) constrain the duration of magmatic crystallisation between ca. 10 and 30 Ma. Zircon in a metamorphosed gabbro constrains the timing of granulite facies metamorphism to 1293 ± 6 Ma, synchronous with final crystallisation of the mafic magmas. Based on the implied metamorphic evolution of these rocks and that of the surrounding supracrustal package, along with existing isotopic and geochemical data, we suggest the Fraser Zone probably formed in a backarc, or perhaps an intracontinental rift setting, and records successive emplacement of gabbroic rocks into a thick, sediment-filled basin. The older gabbroic rocks record hydration and reaction with the devolatilising and/or partially molten metasedimentary rocks into which they were emplaced. Subsequent granulite facies metamorphism of these hydrated rocks was driven by the heat provided by the intrusion of younger mafic magmas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microanalysis of accessory minerals was carried out to elucidate the controversial origin of the classical, ~430 Ma (Silurian) S-type granites and related lithic inclusions from the eastern Lachlan Orogen, southeastern Australia. Inclusions were separated into igneous-derived, mafic microgranular enclaves (MME) and metasedimentary inclusions. Apatite ɛNd(t), and monazite ɛNd(t) isotopic values for granite host and inclusions cover a similar range (~ −4 to −13), but their ɛNd(t) peaks are distinct. Whereas similar unimodal peaks exist for both minerals in the granites, suggesting widespread equilibration during hybridisation of two magmatic components in the host S-type magma, skewed or bimodal peaks characterize the MME and metasedimentary inclusions, indicating their different petrogenetic histories. The isotopic data suggests two endmembers: a mature metasedimentary source with ɛNd(t) of −12, represented by ubiquitous Ordovician quartzose turbidites, and a more radiogenic component represented by a − 5 ɛNd(t) peak in the MME. Zircon ɛ(Hf) values from −3 to −10, and δ18O values from 7.5‰ to 10.5‰, reflect variable incorporation (40–80%) of metasedimentary material with a mantle-like endmember. Temperature estimates for magmatic equilibration are 750-800 °C, though evidence exists for transient higher temperatures in some inclusions. Phase equilibria modelling using the average composition of the Ordovician turbidites as a potential source-rock suggests that melt compositions were uniform, silicic (75–76 wt% SiO 2) and peraluminous (ASI = 1.13–1.22), for a wide range of temperatures and water contents. However, neither the modelled residual rock (restite) compositions, nor the analysed metasedimentary inclusions, lie along the Lachlan S-type compositional array. Rather, the compositional array projects to a mafic endmember defined by the MME, suggesting widespread, efficient hybridization with weakly peraluminous, andesitic magmas. Source mixing models (without significant mantle-derived magma input) are rejected on petrological and geological criteria. The andesitic MME-type magmas were hybridized in the lower crust, probably during mafic magma underplating, before incorporation into large, cool, midcrustal S-type magma reservoirs, and the observed MME represent the final mingled stage of that interaction during emplacement at shallow crustal levels. Using a modern example from the Andes, a model is presented of 2-stage hybridization, initially near the Moho, then in the midcrust as hot, hybrid andesitic magmas repeatedly infused a resident, giant, low- T , S-type magma body.
