Galaxy clusters are one of the most powerful probes to study extensions of General Relativity and the Standard Cosmological Model. Upcoming surveys like the Vera Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time are expected to revolutionise the field, by enabling the analysis of cluster samples of unprecedented size and quality. To reach this era of high-precision cluster cosmology, the mitigation of sources of systematic error is crucial. A particularly important challenge is bias in cluster mass measurements induced by inaccurate photometric redshift estimates of source galaxies. This work proposes a method to optimise the source sample selection in cluster weak lensing analyses drawn from wide-field survey lensing catalogs to reduce the bias on reconstructed cluster masses. We use a combinatorial optimisation scheme and methods from variational inference to select galaxies in latent space to produce a probabilistic galaxy source sample catalog for highly accurate cluster mass estimation. We show that our method reduces the critical surface mass density $\Sigma_{\rm crit}$ modelling bias on the 60-70% level, while maintaining up to 90% of galaxies. SPHEREx, the Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization, and ices Explorer, is a NASA MIDEX mission planned for launch in 2024. SPHEREx will carry out the first all-sky spectral survey at wavelengths between 0.75 micron and 5 micron with spectral resolving power ~40 between 0.75 and 3.8 micron and ~120 between 3.8 and 5 micron At the end of its two-year mission, SPHEREx will provide 0.75-to-5 micron spectra of each 6.2"x6.2" pixel on the sky - 14 billion spectra in all. This paper updates an earlier description of SPHEREx presenting changes made during the mission's Preliminary Design Phase, including a discussion of instrument integration and test and a summary of the data processing, analysis, and distribution plans.

Studies of surface brightness fluctuations in the intracluster medium (ICM) present an indirect probe of turbulent properties such as the turbulent velocities, injection scales, and the slope of the power spectrum of fluctuations towards smaller scales. With the advancement of Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) studies and surveys relative to X-ray observations, we seek to investigate surface brightness fluctuations in a sample of SPT-SZ clusters which also have archival \textit{XMM-Newton} data. Here we present a pilot study of two typical clusters in that sample: SPT-CLJ0232-4421 and SPT-CLJ0638-5358. We infer injection scales larger than 500 kpc in both clusters and Mach numbers $\approx 0.5$ in SPT-CLJ0232-4421 and Mach numbers $\approx 0.6 - 1.6$ in SPT-CLJ0638-5358, which has a known shock. We find hydrostatic bias values for $M_{500}$ less than 0.2 for SPT-CLJ0232-4421 and less than 0.1 for SPT-CLJ0638-5358. These results show the importance to assess its quantitative values via a detailed multiwavelength approach and suggest that the drivers of turbulence may occur at quite larger scales., Comment: Accepted to ApJ; 34 pages, 23 figures, and 14 tables

We present a multi-wavelength study of the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in a sample of the 95 most massive galaxy clusters selected from South Pole Telescope (SPT) Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) survey. Our sample spans a redshift range of 0.3 < z < 1.7, and is complete with optical spectroscopy from various ground-based observatories, as well as ground and space-based imaging from optical, X-ray and radio wavebands. At z~0, previous studies have shown a strong correlation between the presence of a low-entropy cool core and the presence of star-formation and a radio-loud AGN in the central BCG. We show for the first time that a central entropy threshold for star formation persists out to z~1. The central entropy (measured in this work at a radius of 10 kpc) below which clusters harbor star-forming BCGs is found to be as low as $K_\mathrm{10 ~ kpc} = 35 \pm 4$ keV cm$^2$ at z < 0.15 and as high as $K_\mathrm{10 ~ kpc} = 52 \pm 11$ keV cm$^2$ at z~1. We find only marginal (~1$\sigma$) evidence for evolution in this threshold. In contrast, we do not find a similar high-z analog for an entropy threshold for feedback, but instead measure a strong evolution in the fraction of radio-loud BCGs in high-entropy cores as a function of redshift. This could imply that the cooling-feedback loop was not as tight in the past, or that some other fuel source like mergers are fueling the radio sources more often with increasing redshift, making the radio luminosity an increasingly unreliable proxy for radio jet power. We also find that our SZ-based sample is missing a small (~4%) population of the most luminous radio sources ($\nu L_{\nu} > 10^{42}$ erg/s), likely due to radio contamination suppressing the SZ signal with which these clusters are detected., Comment: 22 pages. 10 figures, 2 tables. We explore the relationship between the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) power spectrum amplitude and the halo mass and redshift of galaxy clusters in South Pole Telescope (SPT) data, in comparison with three $N$-body simulations combined with semi-analytical gas models of the intra-cluster medium. Specifically, we calculate both the raw and fractional power contribution to the full tSZ power spectrum amplitude at $\ell = 3000$ from clusters as a function of halo mass and redshift. We use nine mass bins in the range $1 \times 10^{14}\ M_\odot\ h^{-1} < M_{500} < 2 \times 10^{15}\ M_\odot\ h^{-1}$, and two redshift bins defined by $0.25 < z < 0.59$ and $0.59 < z < 1.5$. We additionally divide the raw power contribution in each mass bin by the number of clusters in that bin, as a metric for comparison of different gas models. At lower masses, the SPT data prefers a model that includes a mass-dependent bound gas fraction component and relatively high levels of AGN feedback, whereas at higher masses there is a preference for a model with a lower amount of feedback and a complete lack of non-thermal pressure support. The former provides the best fit to the data overall, in regards to all metrics for comparison. Still, discrepancies exist and the data notably exhibits a steep mass-dependence which all of the simulations fail to reproduce. This suggests the need for additional mass- and redshift-dependent adjustments to the gas models of each simulation, or the potential presence of contamination in the data at halo masses below the detection threshold of SPT-SZ. We present the discovery of the most distant, dynamically relaxed cool core cluster, SPT-CL J2215-3537 (SPT2215) and its central brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) at z=1.16. Using new X-ray observations, we demonstrate that SPT2215 harbors a strong cool core, with a central cooling time of 200 Myr (at 10 kpc) and a maximal intracluster medium cooling rate of 1900+/-400 Msun/yr. This prodigious cooling may be responsible for fueling extended, star-forming filaments observed in Hubble Space Telescope imaging. Based on new spectrophotometric data, we detect bright [O II] emission in the BCG, implying an unobscured star formation rate (SFR) of 320^{+230}_{-140} Msun/yr. The detection of a weak radio source (2.0+/-0.8 mJy at 0.8 GHz) suggests ongoing feedback from an active galactic nucleus (AGN), though the implied jet power is less than half the cooling luminosity of the hot gas, consistent with cooling overpowering heating. The extreme cooling and SFR of SPT2215 is rare among known cool core clusters, and it is even more remarkable that we observe these at such high redshift, when most clusters are still dynamically disturbed. The high mass of this cluster, coupled with the fact that it is dynamically relaxed with a highly-isolated BCG, suggests that it is an exceptionally rare system that must have formed very rapidly in the early Universe. Combined with the high SFR, SPT2215 may be a high-z analog of the Phoenix cluster, potentially providing insight into the limits of AGN feedback and star formation in the most massive galaxies., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. The galaxy distribution in dark matter-dominated halos is expected to approximately trace the details of the underlying dark matter substructure. In this paper we introduce halo `core-tracking' as a way to efficiently follow the small-scale substructure in cosmological simulations and apply the technique to model the galaxy distribution in observed clusters. The method relies on explicitly tracking the set of particles identified as belonging to a halo's central density core, once a halo has attained a certain threshold mass. The halo cores are then followed throughout the entire evolution of the simulation. The aim of core-tracking is to simplify substructure analysis tasks by avoiding the use of subhalos and, at the same time, to more easily account for the so-called ``orphan'' galaxies, which have lost substantial dark mass due to tidal stripping. We show that simple models based on halo cores can reproduce the number and spatial distribution of galaxies found in optically-selected clusters in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We present a multi-wavelength analysis of the galaxy cluster SPT-CL J0607-4448 (SPT0607), which is one of the most distant clusters discovered by the South Pole Telescope (SPT) at $z=1.4010\pm0.0028$. The high-redshift cluster shows clear signs of being relaxed with well-regulated feedback from the active galactic nucleus (AGN) in the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG). Using Chandra X-ray data, we construct thermodynamic profiles and determine the properties of the intracluster medium. The cool core nature of the cluster is supported by a centrally-peaked density profile and low central entropy ($K_0=18_{-9}^{+11}$ keV cm$^2$), which we estimate assuming an isothermal temperature profile due to the limited spectral information given the distance to the cluster. Using the density profile and gas cooling time inferred from the X-ray data, we find a mass cooling rate of $\dot{M}_\mathrm{cool}=100_{-60}^{+90}~M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. From optical spectroscopy and photometry around the [O II] emission line, we estimate that the BCG star formation rate is SFR$_\mathrm{[O~II]}=1.7_{-0.6}^{+1.0}~M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, roughly two orders of magnitude lower than the predicted mass cooling rate. In addition, using ATCA radio data at 2.1 GHz, we measure a radio jet power of $P_\mathrm{cav}=3.2_{-1.3}^{+2.1}\times10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$, which is consistent with the X-ray cooling luminosity ($L_\mathrm{cool}=1.9_{-0.5}^{+0.2}\times10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$ within $r_\mathrm{cool}=43$ kpc). These findings suggest that SPT0607 is a relaxed, cool core cluster with AGN-regulated cooling at an epoch shortly after cluster formation, implying that the balance between cooling and feedback can be reached quickly. The mechanism(s) driving the early- and late-time accelerated expansion of the Universe represent one of the most compelling mysteries in fundamental physics today. The path to understanding the causes of early- and late-time acceleration depends on fully leveraging ongoing surveys, developing and demonstrating new technologies, and constructing and operating new instruments. This report presents a multi-faceted vision for the cosmic survey program in the 2030s and beyond that derives from these considerations. We present a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) weak gravitational lensing study of nine distant and massive galaxy clusters with redshifts $1.0 \lesssim z \lesssim 1.7$ ($z_\mathrm{median} = 1.4$) and Sunyaev Zel'dovich (SZ) detection significance $\xi > 6.0$ from the South Pole Telescope Sunyaev Zel'dovich (SPT-SZ) survey. We measured weak lensing galaxy shapes in HST/ACS F606W and F814W images and used additional observations from HST/WFC3 in F110W and VLT/FORS2 in $U_\mathrm{HIGH}$ to preferentially select background galaxies at $z\gtrsim 1.8$, achieving a high purity. We combined recent redshift estimates from the CANDELS/3D-HST and HUDF fields to infer an improved estimate of the source redshift distribution. We measured weak lensing masses by fitting the tangential reduced shear profiles with spherical Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) models. We obtained the largest lensing mass in our sample for the cluster SPT-CLJ2040$-$4451, thereby confirming earlier results that suggest a high lensing mass of this cluster compared to X-ray and SZ mass measurements. Combining our weak lensing mass constraints with results obtained by previous studies for lower redshift clusters, we extended the calibration of the scaling relation between the unbiased SZ detection significance $\zeta$ and the cluster mass for the SPT-SZ survey out to higher redshifts. We found that the mass scale inferred from our highest redshift bin ($1.2 < z < 1.7$) is consistent with an extrapolation of constraints derived from lower redshifts, albeit with large statistical uncertainties. Thus, our results show a similar tendency as found in previous studies, where the cluster mass scale derived from the weak lensing data is lower than the mass scale expected in a Planck $\nu\Lambda$CDM (i.e. $\nu$ $\Lambda$ Cold Dark Matter) cosmology given the SPT-SZ cluster number counts., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures + appendix (9 pages, 9 figures); accepted for publication in A&A

The environments where galaxies reside crucially shape their star formation histories. We investigate a large sample of 1626 cluster galaxies located within 105 galaxy clusters spanning a large range in redshift ($0.26 < z < 1.13)$. The galaxy clusters are massive (M$_{500} \gtrsim 2\times10^{14}$M$_{\odot}$), and are uniformly selected from the SPT and ACT Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) surveys. With spectra in-hand for thousands of cluster members, we use galaxies' position in projected phase space as a proxy for their in-fall times, which provides a more robust measurement of environment than quantities such as projected cluster-centric radius. We find clear evidence for a gradual age increase of the galaxy's mean stellar populations ($\sim$ 0.71 $\pm$ 0.4 Gyr based on a 4000 $\r{A}$ break, $\rm D_{\rm n}4000$) with the time spent in the cluster environment. This environmental quenching effect is found regardless of galaxy luminosity (faint or bright) and redshift (low-$z$ or high-$z$), although the exact stellar age of galaxies depends on both parameters at fixed environmental effects. Such a systematic increase of $\rm D_{\rm n}4000$ with in-fall proxy would suggest that galaxies that were accreted into hosts earlier were quenched earlier, due to longer exposure to environmental effects such as ram pressure stripping and starvation. Compared to the typical dynamical time scales of $1-3$ Gyr of cluster galaxies, the relatively small age increase ($\sim$ 0.71 $\pm$ 0.4 Gyr) found in our sample galaxies seems to suggest that a slow environmental process such as starvation is the dominant quenching pathway. Our results provide new insights into environmental quenching effects spanning a large range in cosmic time ($\sim 5.2$ Gyr, $z=0.26$--1.13) and demonstrate the power of using a kinematically-derived in-fall time proxy., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables. We present COOL J1323+0343, an early-type galaxy at $z = 1.0153 \pm 0.0006$, strongly lensed by a cluster of galaxies at z = $z = 0.353 \pm 0.001$. This object was originally imaged by DECaLS and noted as a gravitational lens by COOL-LAMPS, a collaboration initiated to find strong-lensing systems in recent public optical imaging data, and confirmed with follow-up data. With ground-based grzH imaging and optical spectroscopy from the Las Campanas Observatory and the Nordic Optical Telescope, we derive a stellar mass, metallicity, and star-formation history from stellar-population synthesis modeling. The lens modeling implies a total magnification of $\mu \sim $113. The median remnant stellar mass in the source plane is M$_* \sim 10.63$ $M_\odot$ and the median star-formation rate in the source plane is SFR $\sim 1.55 \times 10^{-3}$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ (log sSFR = -13.4 yr$^{-1}$) in the youngest two age bins (0-100 Myr), closest to the epoch of observation. Our measurements place COOL J1323+0343 below the characteristic mass of the stellar mass function, making it an especially compelling target that could help clarify how intermediate mass quiescent galaxies evolve. We reconstruct COOL J1323+0343 in the source plane and fit its light profile. This object is below the expected size-evolution of early-type galaxy at this mass with an effective radius r$_e \sim$ 0.5 kpc. This is a solicited whitepaper for the Snowmass 2021 community planning exercise. The paper focuses on measurements and science with the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). The CMB is foundational to our understanding of modern physics and continues to be a powerful tool driving our understanding of cosmology and particle physics. In this paper, we outline the broad and unique impact of CMB science for the High Energy Cosmic Frontier in the upcoming decade. Cosmological data in the next decade will be characterized by high-precision, multi-wavelength measurements of thousands of square degrees of the same patches of sky. By performing multi-survey analyses that harness the correlated nature of these datasets, we will gain access to new science, and increase the precision and robustness of science being pursued by each individual survey. However, effective application of such analyses requires a qualitatively new level of investment in cross-survey infrastructure, including simulations, associated modeling, coordination of data sharing, and survey strategy. We present updated cosmological constraints from measurements of the gas mass fractions ($f_{gas}$) of massive, dynamically relaxed galaxy clusters. Our new data set has greater leverage on models of dark energy, thanks to the addition of the Perseus Cluster at low redshifts, two new clusters at redshifts $z>0.97$, and significantly longer observations of four clusters at $0.6

Using stellar population synthesis models to infer star formation histories (SFHs), we analyse photometry and spectroscopy of a large sample of quiescent galaxies which are members of Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ)-selected galaxy clusters across a wide range of redshifts. We calculate stellar masses and mass-weighted ages for 837 quiescent cluster members at 0.3 < z < 1.4 using rest-frame optical spectra and the Python-based Prospector framework, from 61 clusters in the SPT-GMOS Spectroscopic Survey (0.3 < z < 0.9) and 3 clusters in the SPT Hi-z cluster sample (1.25 < z < 1.4). We analyse spectra of subpopulations divided into bins of redshift, stellar mass, cluster mass, and velocity-radius phase-space location, as well as by creating composite spectra of quiescent member galaxies. We find that quiescent galaxies in our dataset sample a diversity of SFHs, with a median formation redshift (corresponding to the lookback time from the redshift of observation to when a galaxy forms 50% of its mass, t$_{50}$) of $z=2.8\pm0.5$, which is similar to or marginally higher than that of massive quiescent field and cluster galaxy studies. We also report median age-stellar mass relations for the full sample (age of the Universe at $t_{50}$ (Gyr) = $2.52 (\pm0.04) - 1.66 (\pm0.11)$ log$_{10}(M/10^{11} M\odot))$ and recover downsizing trends across stellar mass; we find that massive galaxies in our cluster sample form on aggregate $\sim0.75$ Gyr earlier than lower mass galaxies. We also find marginally steeper age-mass relations at high redshifts, and report a bigger difference in formation redshifts across stellar mass for fixed environment, relative to formation redshifts across environment for fixed stellar mass., Comment: 35 pages, 23 figures, 5 tables. Large simulation efforts are required to provide synthetic galaxy catalogs for ongoing and upcoming cosmology surveys. These extragalactic catalogs are being used for many diverse purposes covering a wide range of scientific topics. In order to be useful, they must offer realistically complex information about the galaxies they contain. Hence, it is critical to implement a rigorous validation procedure that ensures that the simulated galaxy properties faithfully capture observations and delivers an assessment of the level of realism attained by the catalog. We present here a suite of validation tests that have been developed by the Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) Dark Energy Science Collaboration (DESC). We discuss how the inclusion of each test is driven by the scientific targets for static ground-based dark energy science and by the availability of suitable validation data. The validation criteria that are used to assess the performance of a catalog are flexible and depend on the science goals. We illustrate the utility of this suite by showing examples for the validation of cosmoDC2, the extragalactic catalog recently released for the LSST DESC second Data Challenge., Comment: 46 pages, 33 figures

We present the analysis of deep X-ray observations of 10 massive galaxy clusters at redshifts $1.05 < z < 1.71$, with the primary goal of measuring the metallicity of the intracluster medium (ICM) at intermediate radii, to better constrain models of the metal enrichment of the intergalactic medium. The targets were selected from X-ray and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect surveys, and observed with both the \textit{XMM-Newton} and \textit{Chandra} satellites. For each cluster, a precise gas mass profile was extracted, from which the value of $r_{500}$ could be estimated. This allows us to define consistent radial ranges over which the metallicity measurements can be compared. In general, the data are of sufficient quality to extract meaningful metallicity measurements in two radial bins, $r<0.3r_{500}$ and $0.3

We report the discovery of COOL J1241+2219, a strongly-lensed galaxy at redshift $z$=5.043$\pm$0.002 with observed magnitude $z_{AB}=20.47$, lensed by a moderate-mass galaxy cluster at $z$=1.001$\pm$0.001. COOL J1241+2219 is the brightest lensed galaxy currently known at optical and near-infrared wavelengths at $z$ $\gtrsim$ 5; it is $\sim$5 times brighter than the prior record-holder lensed galaxy, and several magnitudes brighter than the brightest unlensed galaxies known at these redshifts. It was discovered as part of COOL-LAMPS, a collaboration initiated to find strongly lensed systems in recent public optical imaging data. We characterise the lensed galaxy, as well as the central galaxy of the lensing cluster using ground-based $griz$JH imaging and optical spectroscopy. We report model-based magnitudes, and derive stellar masses, dust content, metallicity and star-formation rates via stellar-population synthesis modeling. Our lens mass modeling, based on ground-based imaging, implies a median source magnification of $\sim$30, which puts the stellar mass and star formation rate (in the youngest age bin, closest to the epoch of observation) at logM$_{*}$ = $10.11^{+0.21}_{-0.26}$ and SFR = $27^{+13}_{-9}$ M$_{\odot}$/yr, respectively. We constrain a star formation history for COOL J1241+2219 consistent with constant star formation across $\sim$1 Gyr of cosmic time, and that places this galaxy on the high-mass end of the star-forming main sequence. COOL J1241+2219 is 2-4 times more luminous than a galaxy with the characteristic UV luminosity at these redshifts. The UV continuum slope $\beta$= -2.2$\pm$0.2 places this galaxy on the blue side of the observed distribution of galaxies at $z$=5, although the lack of Ly$\alpha$ emission indicates dust sufficient to suppress this emission., Comment: Accepted in the Astrophysical Journal, December 2020 (in production). 16 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables

CMB-S4---the next-generation ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment---is set to significantly advance the sensitivity of CMB measurements and enhance our understanding of the origin and evolution of the Universe, from the highest energies at the dawn of time through the growth of structure to the present day. Among the science cases pursued with CMB-S4, the quest for detecting primordial gravitational waves is a central driver of the experimental design. This work details the development of a forecasting framework that includes a power-spectrum-based semi-analytic projection tool, targeted explicitly towards optimizing constraints on the tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r$, in the presence of Galactic foregrounds and gravitational lensing of the CMB. This framework is unique in its direct use of information from the achieved performance of current Stage 2--3 CMB experiments to robustly forecast the science reach of upcoming CMB-polarization endeavors. The methodology allows for rapid iteration over experimental configurations and offers a flexible way to optimize the design of future experiments given a desired scientific goal. To form a closed-loop process, we couple this semi-analytic tool with map-based validation studies, which allow for the injection of additional complexity and verification of our forecasts with several independent analysis methods. We present results from a 577 ks XMM-Newton observation of SPT-CL J0459-4947, the most distant cluster detected in the South Pole Telescope 2500 square degree (SPT-SZ) survey, and currently the most distant cluster discovered through its Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect. The data confirm the cluster's high redshift, $z=1.71 \pm 0.02$, in agreement with earlier, less precise optical/IR photometric estimates. From the gas density profile, we estimate a characteristic mass of $M_{500}=(1.8 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{14}M_{Sun}$; cluster emission is detected above the background to a radius of $\sim 2.2 r_{500}$, or approximately the virial radius. The intracluster gas is characterized by an emission-weighted average temperature of $7.2 \pm 0.3$ keV and metallicity with respect to Solar of $0.37 \pm 0.08$. For the first time at such high redshift, this deep data set provides a measurement of metallicity outside the cluster center; at radii $r > 0.3 r_{500}$, we find it to be $0.33 \pm 0.17$, in good agreement with precise measurements at similar radii in the most nearby clusters, supporting an early enrichment scenario in which the bulk of the cluster gas is enriched to a universal metallicity prior to cluster formation, with little to no evolution thereafter. The leverage provided by the high redshift of this cluster tightens by a factor of 2 constraints on evolving metallicity models, when combined with previous measurements at lower redshifts., Comment: 12 pages, to be published in MNRAS

We present ~103 ks of Chandra observations of the galaxy cluster SPT-CLJ0528-5300 (SPT0528, z=0.768). This cluster harbors the most radio-loud (L_1.4GHz = 1.01 x 10^33 erg/s/Hz) central AGN of any cluster in the South Pole Telescope (SPT) SZ survey with available X-ray data. We find evidence of AGN-inflated cavities in the X-ray emission, which are consistent with the orientation of the jet direction revealed by ATCA radio data. The combined probability that two such depressions -- each at ~1.4-1.8sigma significance, oriented ~180 degrees apart and aligned with the jet axis -- would occur by chance is 0.1%. At >10^61 erg, the outburst in SPT0528 is among the most energetic known in the universe, and certainly the most powerful known at z>0.25. This work demonstrates that such powerful outbursts can be detected even in shallow X-ray exposures out to relatively high redshifts (z~0.8), providing an avenue for studying the evolution of extreme AGN feedback. The ratio of the cavity power (P_cav = 9.4+/-5.8 x 10^45 erg/s) to the cooling luminosity (L_cool = 1.5+/-0.5 x 10^44 erg/s) for SPT0528 is among the highest measured to date. If, in the future, additional systems are discovered at similar redshifts with equally high P_cav/L_cool ratios, it would imply that the feedback/cooling cycle was not as gentle at high redshifts as in the low-redshift universe., Comment: Accepted to ApJL. 8 pages, 5 figures

We present an analysis of the mass distribution inferred from strong lensing by SPT-CL J0356-5337, a cluster of galaxies at redshift z = 1.0359 revealed in the follow-up of the SPT-SZ clusters. The cluster has an Einstein radius of Erad=14 for a source at z = 3 and a mass within 500 kpc of M_500kpc = 4.0+-0.8x10^14Msol. Our spectroscopic identification of three multiply-imaged systems (z = 2.363, z = 2.364, and z = 3.048), combined with HST F606W-band imaging allows us to build a strong lensing model for this cluster with an rms of <0.3'' between the predicted and measured positions of the multiple images. Our modeling reveals a two-component mass distribution in the cluster. One mass component is dominated by the brightest cluster galaxy and the other component, separated by ~170 kpc, contains a group of eight red elliptical galaxies confined in a ~9'' (~70 kpc) diameter circle. We estimate the mass ratio between the two components to be between 1:1.25 and 1:1.58. In addition, spectroscopic data reveal that these two near-equal mass cores have only a small velocity difference of 300 km/s between the two components. This small radial velocity difference suggests that most of the relative velocity takes place in the plane of the sky, and implies that SPT-CL J0356-5337 is a major merger with a small impact parameter seen face-on. We also assess the relative contributions of galaxy-scale halos to the overall mass of the core of the cluster and find that within 800 kpc from the brightest cluster galaxy about 27% of the total mass can be attributed to visible and dark matter associated with galaxies, whereas only 73% of the total mass in the core comes from cluster-scale dark matter halos., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures. The hot dense environment of the early universe is known to have produced large numbers of baryons, photons, and neutrinos. These extreme conditions may have also produced other long-lived species, including new light particles (such as axions or sterile neutrinos) or gravitational waves. The gravitational effects of any such light relics can be observed through their unique imprint in the cosmic microwave background (CMB), the large-scale structure, and the primordial light element abundances, and are important in determining the initial conditions of the universe. We argue that future cosmological observations, in particular improved maps of the CMB on small angular scales, can be orders of magnitude more sensitive for probing the thermal history of the early universe than current experiments. These observations offer a unique and broad discovery space for new physics in the dark sector and beyond, even when its effects would not be visible in terrestrial experiments or in astrophysical environments. Cosmological cluster-scale strong gravitational lensing probes the mass distribution of the dense cores of massive dark matter halos and the structures along the line of sight from background sources to the observer. It is frequently assumed that the primary lens mass dominates the lensing, with the contribution of secondary masses along the line of sight being neglected. Secondary mass structures may, however, affect both the detectability of strong lensing in a given survey and modify the properties of the lensing that is detected. In this paper, we utilize a large cosmological N-body simulation and a multiple lens plane (and many source planes) ray-tracing technique to quantify the influence of line of sight halos on the detectability of cluster-scale strong lensing in a cluster sample with a mass limit that encompasses current cluster catalogs from the South Pole Telescope. We extract both primary and secondary halos from the "Outer Rim" simulation and consider two strong lensing realizations: one with only the primary halos included, and the other contains all secondary halos down to a mass limit. In both cases, we use the same source information extracted from the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, and create realistic lensed images consistent with moderately deep ground-based imaging. The results demonstrate that down to the mass limit considered the total number of lenses is boosted by about 13-21% when considering the complete multi-halo lightcone. The increment in strong lens counts peaks at lens redshifts of 0.6 approximately with no significant effect at z<0.3. The strongest trends are observed relative to the primary halo mass, with no significant impact in the most massive quintile of the halo sample, but increasingly boosting the observed lens counts toward small primary halo masses, with an enhancement greater than 50% in the least massive quintile of the halo masses considered., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We present measurements of the X-ray observables of the intra-cluster medium (ICM), including luminosity $L_X$, ICM mass $M_{ICM}$, emission-weighted mean temperature $T_X$, and integrated pressure $Y_X$, that are derived from XMM-Newton X-ray observations of a Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect (SZE) selected sample of 59 galaxy clusters from the South Pole Telescope SPT-SZ survey that span the redshift range of $0.20 < z < 1.5$. We constrain the best-fit power law scaling relations between X-ray observables, redshift, and halo mass. The halo masses are estimated based on previously published SZE observable to mass scaling relations, calibrated using information that includes the halo mass function. Employing SZE-based masses in this sample enables us to constrain these scaling relations for massive galaxy clusters ($M_{500}\geq 3 \times10^{14}$ $M_\odot$) to the highest redshifts where these clusters exist without concern for X-ray selection biases. We find that the mass trends are steeper than self-similarity in all cases, and with $\geq 2.5{\sigma}$ significance in the case of $L_X$ and $M_{ICM}$. The redshift trends are consistent with the self-similar expectation, but the uncertainties remain large. Core-included scaling relations tend to have steeper mass trends for $L_X$. There is no convincing evidence for a redshift-dependent mass trend in any observable. The constraints on the amplitudes of the fitted scaling relations are currently limited by the systematic uncertainties on the SZE-based halo masses, however the redshift and mass trends are limited by the X-ray sample size and the measurement uncertainties of the X-ray observables., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 29 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables

SPHEREx is a proposed NASA MIDEX mission selected for Phase A study. SPHEREx would carry out the first all-sky spectral survey in the near infrared. At the end of its two-year mission, SPHEREx would obtain 0.75-to-5$\mu$m spectra of every 6.2 arcsec pixel on the sky, with spectral resolution R>35 and a 5-$\sigma$ sensitivity AB$>$19 per spectral/spatial resolution element. More details concerning SPHEREx are available at http://spherex.caltech.edu. The SPHEREx team has proposed three specific science investigations to be carried out with this unique data set: cosmic inflation, interstellar and circumstellar ices, and the extra-galactic background light. Though these three themes are undoubtedly compelling, they are far from exhausting the scientific output of SPHEREx. Indeed, SPHEREx would create a unique all-sky spectral database including spectra of very large numbers of astronomical and solar system targets, including both extended and diffuse sources. These spectra would enable a wide variety of investigations, and the SPHEREx team is dedicated to making the data available to the community to enable these investigations, which we refer to as Legacy Science. To that end, we have sponsored two workshops for the general scientific community to identify the most interesting Legacy Science themes and to ensure that the SPHEREx data products are responsive to their needs. In February of 2016, some 50 scientists from all fields met in Pasadena to develop these themes and to understand their implications for the SPHEREx mission. The 2016 workshop highlighted many synergies between SPHEREx and other contemporaneous astronomical missions, facilities, and databases. Consequently, in January 2018 we convened a second workshop at the Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge to focus specifically on these synergies. We develop a Maximum Likelihood estimator (MLE) to measure the masses of galaxy clusters through the impact of gravitational lensing on the temperature and polarization anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We show that, at low noise levels in temperature, this optimal estimator outperforms the standard quadratic estimator by a factor of two. For polarization, we show that the Stokes Q/U maps can be used instead of the traditional E- and B-mode maps without losing information. We test and quantify the bias in the recovered lensing mass for a comprehensive list of potential systematic errors. Using realistic simulations, we examine the cluster mass uncertainties from CMB-cluster lensing as a function of an experiment's beam size and noise level. We predict the cluster mass uncertainties will be 3 - 6% for SPT-3G, AdvACT, and Simons Array experiments with 10,000 clusters and less than 1% for the CMB-S4 experiment with a sample containing 100,000 clusters. The velocity distribution of galaxies in clusters is not universal; rather, galaxies are segregated according to their spectral type and relative luminosity. We examine the velocity distributions of different populations of galaxies within 89 Sunyaev Zel'dovich (SZ) selected galaxy clusters spanning $ 0.28 < z < 1.08$. Our sample is primarily draw from the SPT-GMOS spectroscopic survey, supplemented by additional published spectroscopy, resulting in a final spectroscopic sample of 4148 galaxy spectra---2868 cluster members. The velocity dispersion of star-forming cluster galaxies is $17\pm4$% greater than that of passive cluster galaxies, and the velocity dispersion of bright ($m < m^{*}-0.5$) cluster galaxies is $11\pm4$% lower than the velocity dispersion of our total member population. We find good agreement with simulations regarding the shape of the relationship between the measured velocity dispersion and the fraction of passive vs. star-forming galaxies used to measure it, but we find a small offset between this relationship as measured in data and simulations in which suggests that our dispersions are systematically low by as much as 3\% relative to simulations. We argue that this offset could be interpreted as a measurement of the effective velocity bias that describes the ratio of our observed velocity dispersions and the intrinsic velocity dispersion of dark matter particles in a published simulation result. Measuring velocity bias in this way suggests that large spectroscopic surveys can improve dispersion-based mass-observable scaling relations for cosmology even in the face of velocity biases, by quantifying and ultimately calibrating them out., Comment: Accepted to ApJ; 21 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables

SPHEREx is a proposed SMEX mission selected for Phase A. SPHEREx will carry out the first all-sky spectral survey and provide for every 6.2" pixel a spectra between 0.75 and 4.18 $\mu$m [with R$\sim$41.4] and 4.18 and 5.00 $\mu$m [with R$\sim$135]. The SPHEREx team has proposed three specific science investigations to be carried out with this unique data set: cosmic inflation, interstellar and circumstellar ices, and the extra-galactic background light. It is readily apparent, however, that many other questions in astrophysics and planetary sciences could be addressed with the SPHEREx data. The SPHEREx team convened a community workshop in February 2016, with the intent of enlisting the aid of a larger group of scientists in defining these questions. This paper summarizes the rich and varied menu of investigations that was laid out. It includes studies of the composition of main belt and Trojan/Greek asteroids; mapping the zodiacal light with unprecedented spatial and spectral resolution; identifying and studying very low-metallicity stars; improving stellar parameters in order to better characterize transiting exoplanets; studying aliphatic and aromatic carbon-bearing molecules in the interstellar medium; mapping star formation rates in nearby galaxies; determining the redshift of clusters of galaxies; identifying high redshift quasars over the full sky; and providing a NIR spectrum for most eROSITA X-ray sources. All of these investigations, and others not listed here, can be carried out with the nominal all-sky spectra to be produced by SPHEREx. In addition, the workshop defined enhanced data products and user tools which would facilitate some of these scientific studies. Gravitational lensing has become one of the most powerful tools available for investigating the 'dark side' of the universe. Cosmological strong gravitational lensing, in particular, probes the properties of the dense cores of dark matter halos over decades in mass and offers the opportunity to study the distant universe at flux levels and spatial resolutions otherwise unavailable. Studies of strongly-lensed variable sources offer yet further scientific opportunities. One of the challenges in realizing the potential of strong lensing is to understand the statistical context of both the individual systems that receive extensive follow-up study, as well as that of the larger samples of strong lenses that are now emerging from survey efforts. Motivated by these challenges, we have developed an image-simulation pipeline, PICS (Pipeline for Images of Cosmological Strong lensing) to generate realistic strong gravitational lensing signals from group and cluster scale lenses. PICS uses a low-noise and unbiased density estimator based on (resampled) Delaunay Tessellations to calculate the density field; lensed images are produced by ray-tracing images of actual galaxies from deep Hubble Space Telescope observations. Other galaxies, similarly sampled, are added to fill in the light cone. The pipeline further adds cluster-member galaxies and foreground stars into the lensed images. The entire image ensemble is then observed using a realistic point spread function which includes appropriate detector artifacts for bright stars. Noise is further added, including such non-Gaussian elements as noise window-paning from mosaiced observations, residual bad pixels, and cosmic rays. The pairwise kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) signal from galaxy clusters is a probe of their line-of-sight momenta, and thus a potentially valuable source of cosmological information. In addition to the momenta, the amplitude of the measured signal depends on the properties of the intra-cluster gas and observational limitations such as errors in determining cluster centers and redshifts. In this work we simulate the pairwise kSZ signal of clusters at z<1, using the output from a cosmological N-body simulation and including the properties of the intra-cluster gas via a model that can be varied in post-processing. We find that modifications to the gas profile due to star formation and feedback reduce the pairwise kSZ amplitude of clusters by ~50%, relative to the naive 'gas traces mass' assumption. We demonstrate that mis-centering can reduce the overall amplitude of the pairwise kSZ signal by up to 10%, while redshift errors can lead to an almost complete suppression of the signal at small separations. We confirm that a high-significance detection is expected from the combination of data from current-generation, high-resolution CMB experiments, such as the South Pole Telescope, and cluster samples from optical photometric surveys, such as the Dark Energy Survey. Furthermore, we forecast that future experiments such as Advanced ACTPol in conjunction with data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument will yield detection significances of at least 20{\sigma}, and up to 57{\sigma} in an optimistic scenario. Minimizing the scatter between cluster mass and accessible observables is an important goal for cluster cosmology. In this work, we introduce a new matched filter richness estimator, and test its performance using the maxBCG cluster catalog. Our new estimator significantly reduces the variance in the L_X-richness relation, from \sigma_{\ln L_X}^2=(0.86\pm0.02)^2 to \sigma_{\ln L_X}^2=(0.69\pm0.02)^2. Relative to the maxBCG richness estimate, it also removes the strong redshift dependence of the richness scaling relations, and is significantly more robust to photometric and redshift errors. These improvements are largely due to our more sophisticated treatment of galaxy color data. We also demonstrate the scatter in the L_X-richness relation depends on the aperture used to estimate cluster richness, and introduce a novel approach for optimizing said aperture which can be easily generalized to other mass tracers., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, submitted to ApJ

Measurements of galaxy cluster abundances, clustering properties, and mass to- light ratios in current and future surveys can provide important cosmological constraints. Digital wide-field imaging surveys, the recently-demonstrated fidelity of red-sequence cluster detection techniques, and a new generation of realistic mock galaxy surveys provide the means for construction of large, cosmologicallyinteresting cluster samples, whose selection and properties can be understood in unprecedented depth. We present the details of the "maxBCG" algorithm, a cluster-detection technique tailored to multi-band CCD-imaging data. MaxBCG primarily relies on an observational cornerstone of massive galaxy clusters: they are marked by an overdensity of bright, uniformly red galaxies. This detection scheme also exploits classical brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs), which are often found at the center of these same massive clusters. SPHEREx, the Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization, and ices Explorer, isa NASA MIDEX mission planned for launch in 2024. SPHEREx will carry out the first all-sky spectral survey at wavelengths between 0.75μm and 5μm with spectral resolving power ~40 between 0.75 and 3.8μm and ~120 between 3.8 and 5μm At the end of its two-year mission, SPHEREx will provide 14 billion 0.75-to-5μm spectra of each 6."2 x 6."2 pixel on the sky. This paper updates an earlier description of SPHEREx presenting changes made during the mission's Preliminary Design Phase, including a discussion of instrument integration and test flow and a summary of the data processing, analysis, and distribution plans.
