Poland's economic profile in late 1995 includes high domestic demand, booming exports, rising foreign-exchange reserves, above-target money supply and a widening budget gap. These are the hallmarks of a mature business cycle in search of a slowdown. But the Polish economy may pause only briefly before continuing with its fast-paced growth. The reasons are both cyclical and structural. Rising incomes, booming investment and stable inventories will provide room for output growth in the near term. Demand has shifted to investment goods while retail sales have remained flat. Investment spending is financed mainly from retained earnings. Corporate profits are strong, as is the capacity utilization rate. Inflation has been the one target which the Treasury and the central bank have found hard to achieve. In July, consumer inflation rose at an annual rate of 27.6%, a far cry from the `7% originally forecast. Notwithstanding higher food costs, 1995 inflation has been driven mainly by monetary factors, particularly, a run-up in foreign-exchange reserves.
