Search

A fraction of the active supermassive black holes at the centers of galaxies in our Universe are capable of launching extreme kiloparsec-long relativistic jets. These jets are known multiband (radio to γ-ray) and multimessenger (neutrino) emitters, and some of them have been monitored over decades at all accessible wavelengths. However, several open questions remain unanswered about the processes powering these highly energetic phenomena. These jets intrinsically produce soft-to-hard X-ray emission that extends from E > 0.1 keV up to E > 100 keV, and simultaneous broadband X-ray coverage, combined with excellent timing and imaging capabilities, is required to uncover the physics of jets. Indeed, truly simultaneous soft-to-hard X-ray coverage, in synergy with current and upcoming high-energy facilities (such as IXPE, COSI, CTAO, etc.) and neutrino detectors (e.g., IceCube), would enable us to disentangle the particle population responsible for the high-energy radiation from these jets. A sensitive hard X-ray survey (F20-80 keV < 10-15erg cm-2 s-1) could unveil the bulk of their population in the early Universe. Acceleration and radiative processes responsible for the majority of their X-ray emission would be pinned down by microsecond timing capabilities at both soft and hard X-rays. Furthermore, imaging jet structures for the first time in the hard X-ray regime could unravel the origin of their high-energy emission. The proposed Probe-class mission concept High Energy X-ray Probe (HEX-P) combines all these required capabilities, making it the crucial next-generation X-ray telescope in the multi-messenger, time-domain era. Previous studies have identified the Fundamental Plane (FP) of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) in recent years. However, these findings relied on total black hole mass, also known as dynamical mass, (Mdyn). Instead the fundamental plane may be governed by BH spin. In this study, we take the black hole spin-mass energy ( M spin ) as a new variable, which is closely related to the supermassive black hole (SMBH). We collected a sample of 62 flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) with gamma-ray luminosity ( L γ ), X-ray luminosity ( L X ) and spin-mass energy ( M spin ) to construct a new fundamental plane of blazars. Our analysis demonstrates that the fundamental plane (log L γ = 0.662 + 0.193 − 0.193 log L X + 0.495 + 0.154 − 0.154 log M spin + 14.579 + 7.140 − 7.140 with R-Square = 0.783) has a stronger correlation with spin-mass energy ( M spin ) compared to the black hole mass. Therefore, M spin should be considered as an essential variable for the fundamental plane of blazars. Our findings may improve the understanding of the Blandford-Znajek process in FSRQs. In this work, we study the parameter space of neutrino-emitting BL Lacs under the framework of the one-zone lepto-hadronic model. We show that constraints on the model come from various aspects of observations such as the variability timescale of blazar flares, gamma ray opacity and the spectral energy distribution of electromagnetic emission, as well as the inferred neutrino emissivity of the blazar. We apply our method to two potential neutrino sources, i.e., TXS 0506+056 and PKS 0735+178, which are BL Lacs. Then, we explore and summarize the allowed range of parameters such as the bulk Lorentz factor and the blob radius under different distributions of injected protons. We find that the parameter space that is available to explain the BL Lac–neutrino association is sensitive to the proton distribution, and usually, an injected proton luminosity significantly exceeding the Eddington luminosity is required for both sources. Our results suggest that the simple lepto-hadronic one-zone model may not be a reasonable interpretation for BL Lac–neutrino associations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We observed the flat-spectrum radio quasar 4C 29.45 in the BVRI optical bands for 39 nights from February 2022 to July 2022 with the T60 telescope at TÜBİTAK National Observatory (TUG) in Turkey. In this study, we aimed to study flux, color, and spectral variability on short timescales. The object was in an active (bright) phase with an average optical R-band brightness of 14.7 mag and was variable in the BVRI bands throughout the monitoring period. We analyzed the flux variability during our observation period, and the variability amplitudes in V, R, and I bands were determined to be 220%, 208%, and 209%, respectively. Optical spectral energy distributions of 4C 29.45 were derived from the observational data of 33 nights, indicating spectral indices ranging from 1.032 to 1.573. We found modest correlations between optical light curves, and between R-band light curve and spectral indices, suggesting that the time lag ranges from several hours to days. Investigation on relation between spectral and color indices versus R-band magnitude revealed achromatic trend during the bright phase of 4C 29.45 in the first half of 2022. In the blazar catalog BZCAT the objects are divided into 4 types: BZB, BZQ, BZG, and BZU. In this paper BZG objects are studied in order to determine their physical nature. Of the 274 BZG objects, 150 have optical spectra in the SDSS spectroscopic catalog, for which a detailed spectral classification has been carried out. A radio study showed that these objects mostly (69%) have a flat radio spectrum with a spectral index less than ±0.5. Quasars predominate among these kinds of radio spectra. In recent years, evidence has started piling up that some high-energy cosmic neutrinos can be associated with blazars in flaring states. On 2022 February 26, a new blazar-neutrino coincidence was reported: the track-like neutrino event IC220225A detected by IceCube is spatially coincident with the flat-spectrum radio quasar PKS 0215+015. Like previous associations, this source was found to be in a high optical and γ -ray state. Moreover, the source showed a bright radio outburst, which substantially increases the probability of a true physical association. We have performed six observations with the VLBA shortly after the neutrino event with a monthly cadence and are monitoring the source with the Effelsberg 100m-Telescope, and with the Australia Compact Telescope Array. Here, we present first results on the contemporary parsec-scale jet structure of PKS 0215+015 in total intensity and polarization to constrain possible physical processes leading to neutrino emission in blazars. Despite the fact that jets from black holes were first understood to exist over 40 years ago, we are still in ignorance about many primary aspects of these systems – including the radiation mechanism at high energies, the particle makeup of the jets, and how particles are accelerated, possibly to energies as high as 100 TeV and hundreds of kpc from the central engine. We focus in particular on the discovery (and mystery) of strong X-ray emission from radio jets on kpc-scales, enabled by the unequaled high resolution of the Chandra X-ray observatory. We review the main evidence for and against the viable models to explain this X-ray emission over the last 20 years. Finally, we present results of a recent study on the X-ray variability of kpc-scale jets, where we find evidence that between 30-100% of the X-ray jet population is variable at the tens-of-percent level. The short (∼years) variability timescale is incompatible with the IC/CMB model for the X-rays and implies extremely small structures embedded within the kpc-scale jet, and thus requires a reconsideration of many assumptions about jet structure and dynamics. Relativistic jets from supermassive black holes or stellar mass black holes are among the most powerful astrophysical phenomena. Magnetic field plays an important role in the jet launching and propagation, as well as particle acceleration and radiation. Polarimetry is the only way to observe the magnetic field evolution. The recent launch of the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) has opened up the X-ray polarization window, which has revealed very interesting phenomena for relativistic jets. However, the field of MeV gamma-ray polarimetry remains largely unexplored. This paper aims to summarize key scientific potentials for MeV polarimetry for blazars and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) from recent theoretical modeling. These predictions, which are closely related to the cosmic ray acceleration, neutrino production, radiation mechanism, and the jet evolution, can be examined by future MeV polarimeters, such as the Compton Spectrometer and Imager (COSI), the LargE Area burst Polarimeter (LEAP), and the All-sky Medium-Energy Gamma-ray Observatory eXplorer (AMEGO-X). We present results from our radio polarimetric study with the upgraded giant metrewave radio telescope (uGMRT) at band 4 (550–850 MHz) of three blazars: radio-loud quasars 3C390.3, 4C71.07 and BL Lac object 1ES 2344 + 514. The aim of this study was (i) to carry out a feasibility study for band 4 polarization with the uGMRT and (ii) to compare and contrast the kpc-scale polarization properties between the blazar sub-classes. We have detected linear polarization in all the three sources. The degree of linear polarization in the cores of the two quasars is higher than the BL Lac object, consistent with similar differences observed on parsec-scales in blazars. The highest fractional polarization of ≈ 15% is observed in the hotspot region of 3C390.3, which also shows extended polarized lobe structures. 1ES 2344 + 514 shows a core–halo structure, whereas 4C71.07 remains unresolved. A rotation of polarization electric vectors along the northern hotspot of 3C390.3 and the core of 1ES 2344 + 514, suggest jet bending. Greater depolarization in the southern lobe of 3C390.3 compared to the northern lobe indicates the presence of Laing–Garrington effect. Multi-frequency uGMRT polarimetric data are underway to study the kpc-scale rotation measures across these sources to find differences in the surrounding media. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study of the polarization direction is crucial in the issue of restoring the spatial structure of the magnetic field in the active galaxy parsec-scale jets. But, due to relativistic effects, the magnetic field projected onto the celestial sphere in the source reference frame cannot be assumed to be orthogonal to the observed direction of the electric vector in the wave. Moreover, the local axis of the jet component may not coincide with its motion direction, which affects the observed polarization direction. In this article, we analyze the transverse to jet distributions of the electric vector in the wave, obtained as a result of modeling with different jet kinematic and geometrical parameters for a helical magnetic field with a different twist angle and for a toroidal magnetic field in the center, surrounded by a varying thickness sheath, penetrated by a poloidal field. We obtained: (1) the shape of the electric vector transverse distribution depends in a complex way on the angles of the jet axis and the velocity vector with the line of sight; (2) ambiguity in determining the twist direction of the helical magnetic field under using only the distributions of the electric vector in the wave; (3) both considered magnetic field topologies can reproduce both the "spine–sheath" polarization structure and individual bright features with the longitudinal to the jet axis polarization direction. We focus on characterizing the high-energy emission mechanisms of blazars by analyzing the variability in the radio band of the light curves of more than a thousand sources. We are interested in assigning complexity parameters to these sources, modeling the time series of the light curves with the method of the Horizontal Visibility Graph (HVG), which allows us to obtain properties from degree distributions, such as a characteristic exponent to describe its stochasticity and the Kullback–Leibler Divergence (KLD), presenting a new perspective to the methods commonly used to study Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). We contrast these parameters with the excess variance, which is an astronomical measurement of variability in light curves; at the same time, we use the spectral classification of the sources. While it is not possible to find significant correlations with the excess variance, the degree distributions extracted from the network are detecting differences related to the spectral classification of blazars. These differences suggest a chaotic behavior in the time series for the BL Lac sources and a correlated stochastic behavior in the time series for the FSRQ sources. Blazars are celestial bodies of high interest to astronomers. In particular, through the analysis of photometric and polarimetric observations of blazars, astronomers aim to understand the physics of the blazar's relativistic jet. However, it is challenging to recognize correlations and time variations of the observed polarization, intensity, and color of the emitted light. In our prior study, we proposed TimeTubes to visualize a blazar dataset as a 3D volumetric tube. In this paper, we build primarily on the TimeTubes representation of blazar datasets to present a new visual analytics environment named TimeTubesX, into which we have integrated sophisticated feature and pattern detection techniques for effective location of observable and recurring time variation patterns in long-term, multi-dimensional datasets. Automatic feature extraction detects time intervals corresponding to well-known blazar behaviors. Dynamic visual querying allows users to search long-term observations for time intervals similar to a time interval of interest (query-by-example) or a sketch of temporal patterns (query-by-sketch). Users are also allowed to build up another visual query guided by the time interval of interest found in the previous process and refine the results. We demonstrate how TimeTubesX has been used successfully by domain experts for the detailed analysis of blazar datasets and report on the results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the multi-wavelength variability of the blazar Mrk 421 at minutes to days timescales using simultaneous data at γ -rays from Fermi, 0.7–20 keV energies from AstroSat, and optical and near infrared (NIR) wavelengths from ground based observatories. We compute the shortest variability timescales at all of the above wave bands and find its value to be ∼ 1.1 ks at the hard X-ray energies and increasingly longer at soft X-rays, optical and NIR wavelengths as well as at the GeV energies. We estimate the value of the magnetic field to be 0.5 Gauss and the maximum Lorentz factor of the emitting electrons ∼ 1.6 × 10 5 assuming that synchrotron radiation cooling drives the shortest variability timescale. Blazars vary at a large range of timescales often from minutes to years. These results, as obtained here from the very short end of the range of variability timescales of blazars, are a confirmation of the leptonic scenario and in particular the synchrotron origin of the X-ray emission from Mrk 421 by relativistic electrons of Lorentz factor as high as 10 5 . This particular mode of confirmation has been possible using minutes to days timescale variability data obtained from AstroSat and simultaneous multi-wavelength observations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The curved shape of the kiloparsec-scale jet of the blazar OJ 287 is analyzed in the framework of the precession of the central engine, on the existence on which a large number of studies over the past decades are based. The data necessary for the analysis on the kiloparsec-scale jet velocity and angle with the line of sight are obtained based on two competing assumptions about the X-ray emission mechanism of the OJ 287 jet. Namely, there were both the inverse Compton scattering of the cosmic microwave background under the assumption of relativistic kiloparsec-scale jet and the inverse Compton scattering of the central source radiation. For the latter one, we showed that the expected flux from the kiloparsec-scale jet in the gamma range does not exceed the limit set for it according to Fermi-LAT data. We found that only the period of the kiloparsec-scale jet helix, estimated in the framework of the inverse Compton scattering of the central source radiation, agrees with the precession period of the central engine, determined from the modulation of the peak values of 12‑year optical flares. We present the results from observations of the blazar OJ 287 in the B, V, R and I bands during December 2015 - February 2020. The obtained light curve of OJ 287 showed long-term timescale variability with a large amplitude. We found untypical variations in the color indexes (B-V) and (V-R) in short-term period. A dominating black body radiation from the accretion disc and the Broad-Line Region (BLR) emission lines appearance in the blazar spectrum might be the probable reasons for these variations. The analysis of blazars' parameters from BZCAT leads to a conclusion that they do not have the same properties. The preliminary criterion to include an object in the catalog was the strong radio emission; however, two type of radio sources were selected: BL Lacertae (BLL) objects and Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQ). As a number of properties are typical of blazars (strong radio emission, optical variability, continuum optical spectra, polarization, high luminosity, etc.), using the optical data, we investigate them to clarify which property plays the most significant role in their classification as blazars. We found that 60% of blazars have optical variability. We use a technique developed based on POSS1 and POSS2 photometry and group the variability into extreme, strong, medium, and low classes. In the optical range, 51 blazars have powerful variability (extreme variables), and 126 are high variables. In addition, 63% of blazars have detected radiation in X‐ray and 28% have detected radiation in gamma rays. Abstract The observation by the IceCube Collaboration of a high-energy (E ≳ 200 TeV) neutrino from the direction of the blazar TXS 0506+056 and the coincident observations of enhanced γ -ray emissions from the same object by MAGIC and other experiments can be used to set stringent constraints on Lorentz violation in the propagation of neutrinos that is linear in the neutrino energy: Δ v = − E / M 1 , where Δ v is the deviation from the velocity of light, and M 1 is an unknown high energy scale to be constrained by experiment. Allowing for a difference in neutrino and photon propagation times of ∼10 days, we find that M 1 ≳ 3 × 10 16 GeV. This improves on previous limits on linear Lorentz violation in neutrino propagation by many orders of magnitude, and the same is true for quadratic Lorentz violation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The galaxy Mrk 501 has been monitored with the GT-48 Cherenkov telescope at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory for 14 years (1997–2010). Very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray photons have been recorded from Mrk 501 with a total significance of 15σ. The arrival directions of VHE gamma-ray photons have been mapped. They have been identified with Mrk 501. The TeV fluxes from Mrk 501 are shown to be highly variable. The light curves from the data of Cherenkov telescopes and the telescopes that observed Mrk 501 at high energies (MeV and GeV) and in the X-ray and optical bands are presented. Based on the GT-48 observations, we have constructed a TeV spectrum and determined the differential spectral index. The fluxes and spectral characteristics of Mrk 501 inferred from the GT-48 observations are consistent with the data of the MAGIC and H.E.S.S. Collaborations, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Light curves for more than century optical photometric observations of the blazar OJ 287 reveals strong flares with a quasi-period of about 12 years. For a long time, this period has been interpreted by processes in a binary black hole system. We propose an alternative explanation for this period, which is based on Doppler factor periodic variations of the emitting region caused by jet helicity. Using multi-epoch very large baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations carried out in a framework of the MOJAVE (Monitoring Of Jets in Active galactic nuclei with VLBA Experiments) program and other VLBA (Very Long Baseline Array) archival experiments at the observing frequency of 15 GHz, we derived geometrical parameters of the jet helix. To reach an agreement between the VLBI and photometric optical observation data, the jet component motion at a small angle to the radial direction is necessary. Such non-radial motion is observed and, together with the jet helical shape, can be naturally explained by the development of the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability in the parsec-scale outflow. In this case, the true precession of the OJ 287 jet may manifest itself in differences between the peak flux values of the 12-year optical flares. A possibility to create this precession due to Lense–Thirring effect of a single supermassive black hole is also discussed.

The discovery in 2008 of high-energy gamma-rays from Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies (NLS1s) made it clear that there were active galactic nuclei (AGN) other than blazars and radio galaxies that can eject powerful relativistic jets. In addition to NLS1s, the great performance of the Fermi Large Area Telescope made it possible to discover MeV-GeV photons emitted from more classes of AGN, like Seyferts, Compact Steep Spectrum Gigahertz Peaked Sources (CSS/GPS), and disk-hosted radio galaxies. Although observations indicate a variety of objects, their physical characteristics point to a central engine powered by a relatively small-mass black hole (but, obviously, there are interpretations against this view). This essay critically reviews the literature published on these topics during the last eight years and analyzes the perspectives for the forthcoming years.

Prior to the Fermi-LAT era, only two classes of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) were thought to harbor relativistic jets that radiate up to gamma-ray energies: blazars and radio galaxies. The detection of variable gamma-ray emission from Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxies has put them on the spotlight as a new class of gamma-ray emitting AGN. In this respect, gamma-ray emitting NLSy1s seem to be situated between blazars (dominated by non-thermal emission) and Seyferts (accretion disc dominated). In this work, we model the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of two gamma-loud NLSy1s, 1H 0323+342 and B2 0954+25A, during quiescent and flaring episodes via a multi-component radiative model that features a relativistic jet and external photon fields from the torus, disc, corona and Broad Line Region (BLR). We find that the interpretation of the high-energy emission of jetted NLSy1s requires taking into account Inverse Compton emission from particles in the relativistic jet that interact with external photon fields. Minimal changes are applied to the model parameters to transition from average to flaring states. In this scenario, the observed variability is explained mainly by means of changes in the jet density and Doppler factor.

The polarization of relativistic jets is of interest for the understanding of their origin, confinement, and propagation. However, even though numerous measurements have been performed, the mechanisms behind jet variability, creation, and composition are still debated. We have performed simultaneous gamma-ray and optical photopolarimetry observations of 45 blazars with the Kanata telescope since July 2008 to investigate the mechanisms of variability and search for a basic relation between the several subclasses of relativistic jets. Consequently, we found that a correlation between the gamma-ray and optical flux might be related to gamma-ray luminosity, and the maximum polarization degree might be related to gamma-ray luminosity or the ratio of gamma-ray to optical flux. Open source software (OSS) has been gaining importance in many industries, including network services. Members of the NTT laboratories have been involved in numerous activities in OSS communities both as users and as active contributors by doing coding and by providing requirements for telecom operators. These efforts are expected to give us a significant advantage over our competitors. Blazars and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) both are strong astrophysical events with relativistic jets which point at a small angle from our line of sight. Many recent works suggested that blazars and GRBs may have the similar jet physics. In this paper, we explore a fundamental plane for GRBs and blazars between the peak luminosity ( $L_{peak}$ ) and the peak frequency ( ${\nu}_{peak}$ ) with the sample we collected. We find that there is a fundamental plane with low-energy cut-off (LSP) blazars and GRBs. The fundamental plane which we found also exists even after considering the beaming effect on our sample. Our results suggest that these two kinds of sources may have similar radiation process in the synchrotron radiation and this fundamental plane maybe relates to the type of blazars.
