Astrophysics - Solar and Stellar Astrophysics - Abstract
Theoretical simulations and observations at different angular resolutions have shown that magnetic fields have a central role in massive star formation. Like in low-mass star formation, the magnetic field in massive young stellar objects can either be oriented along the outflow axis or randomly. Measuring the magnetic field at milliarcsecond resolution (10-100 au) around a substantial number of massive young stellar objects permits determining with a high statistical significance whether the direction of the magnetic field is correlated with the orientation of the outflow axis or not. In late 2012, we started a large VLBI campaign with the European VLBI Network to measure the linearly and circularly polarized emission of 6.7 GHz methanol masers around a sample of massive star-forming regions. This paper focuses on the first seven observed sources, G24.78+0.08, G25.65+1.05, G29.86-0.04, G35.03+0.35, G37.43+1.51, G174.20-0.08, and G213.70-12.6. For all these sources, molecular outflows have been detected in the past. We detected a total of 176 methanol masing cloudlets toward the seven massive star-forming regions, 19% of which show linearly polarized emission. The methanol masers around the massive young stellar object MM1 in G174.20-0.08 show neither linearly nor circularly polarized emission. The linear polarization vectors are well ordered in all the other massive young stellar objects. We measured significant Zeeman splitting toward both A1 and A2 in G24.78+0.08, and toward G29.86-0.04 and G213.70-12.6. By considering all the 19 massive young stellar objects reported in the literature for which both the orientation of the magnetic field at milliarcsecond resolution and the orientation of outflow axes are known, we find evidence that the magnetic field (on scales 10-100 au) is preferentially oriented along the outflow axes., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, 9 tables, accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysics. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1306.6335

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
In this work we present a polarization analysis at radio frequencies of Markarian 421, one of the closest (z=0.03) TeV blazars. The observations were obtained, both in total and in polarized intensity, with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 15, 24, and 43 GHz throughout 2011, with one observation per month (for a total of twelve epochs). We investigate the magnetic field topology and the polarization structure on parsec scale and their evolution with time. We detect polarized emission both in the core and in the jet region, and it varies with frequency, location and time. In the core region we measure a mean fractional polarization of about 1-2%, with a peak of about 4% in March at 43 GHz; the polarization angle is almost stable at 43 GHz, but it shows significant variability in the range 114-173 deg at 15 GHz. In the jet region the polarization properties show a more stable behavior; the fractional polarization is about 16% and the polarization angle is nearly perpendicular to the jet axis. The higher EVPA variability observed at 15 GHz is due both to a variable Faraday rotation effect and to opacity. The residual variability observed in the intrinsic polarization angle, together with the low degree of polarization in the core region, could be explained with the presence of a blend of variable cross-polarized subcomponents within the beam., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, proceedings of the 12th European VLBI Network Symposium and Users Meeting (7-10 October 2014, Cagliari, Italy)

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
We analyzed data in polarized intensity obtained with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at twelve epochs (one observation per month from January to December 2011) at 15, 24, and 43 GHz. For the absolute orientation of the electric vector position angles (EVPA) we used the D-terms method. We also used gamma-ray data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope on weekly time bins throughout 2011. The source shows polarized emission, and its properties vary with time, frequency, and location along the jet. The core mean polarization fraction is generally between 1% and 2%, with a 4% peak at 43 GHz in March; the polarization angle is variable, mainly at 15 GHz, where it changes frequently, and less so at 43 GHz, where it oscillates in the range 114 - 173 deg. The jet polarization properties are more stable, with a fractional polarization of around 16% and a polarization angle nearly perpendicular to the jet axis. The average flux and photon index at gamma-ray energies are (17.7+-0.5)x10^8 ph cm^-2 s^-1 and the photon index is 1.77+-0.02. The gamma-ray light curve shows variability, with a main peak that appears to be associated with the peak in the core polarized emission at 43 GHz, as well as with the total intensity light curve. A discrete correlation function analysis yields a correlation coefficient of 0.54 at zero delay, with a significance level above 99.7%. We accurately determine the polarization properties of Mrk 421, both in the core and in the jet region. The radio and gamma-ray light curves are correlated. The observed EVPA variability at 15 GHz is partly due to opacity and partly to a variable Faraday rotation effect. To explain the residual variability of the intrinsic polarization angle and the low degree of polarization in the core region, we invoke a blend of variable cross-polarized subcomponents with different polarization properties within the beam., Comment: 13 pages

- Abstract
Animal conservation relies on assessing the distribution and habitat use of species, but for endangered/elusive animals this can prove difficult. The Monk Seal, Monachus monachus, is one of the world's most endangered species of pinniped, and the only one endemic to the Mediterranean Sea. During recent decades, direct observations have been few and scattered, making it difficult to determine its distribution away from the Aegean Sea (core distribution area of the post-decline relict population). This study relies on environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis to detect the presence of the Monk Seal in 135 samples collected in 120 locations of the central/western Mediterranean Sea, spanning about 1500 km longitudinally and 1000 km latitudinally. A recently described species-specific qPCR assay was used on marine-water samples, mostly collected during 2021 by a Citizen Science (CS) project. Positive detections occurred throughout the longitudinal range, including the westernmost surveyed area (Balearic archipelago). The distribution of the positive detections indicated six “hotspots”, mostly overlapping with historical Monk Seal sites, suggesting that habitat-specific characteristics play a fundamental role. We applied single-season occupancy models to correct for detection probability and to assess the importance of site-specific characteristics. The distance from small islets and protected (or access-restricted) areas was correlated negatively with the detection probability. This novel molecular approach, applied here for the first time in an extensive CS study, proved its potential as a tool for monitoring the distribution of this endangered/elusive species.

We report the results obtained for the AGN Markarian 421 by model-fitting the data in the visibility plane, studing the proper motion of jet components, the light curve, and the spectral index of the jet features. We compare the radio data with optical light curves obtained at the Steward Observatory, considering also the optical polarization information. Mrk 421 has a bright nucleus and a one-sided jet extending towards the north-west for a few parsecs. The model-fits show that brightness distribution is well described using 6-7 circular Gaussian components, four of which are reliably identified at all epochs; all components are effectively stationary except for component D, at ~0.4 mas from the core, whose motion is however subluminal. Analysis of the light curve shows two different states, with the source being brighter and more variable in the first half of 2011 than in the second half. The highest flux density is reached in February. A comparison with the optical data reveals an increase of the V magnitude and of the fractional polarization simultaneous with the enhancement of the radio activity., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

Seventeen commercial and research laboratories participated in two comparison tests under the auspices of the International Society for Animal Genetics to develop an internationally tested, microsatellite-based parentage and identification panel for the domestic cat (Felis catus). Genetic marker selection was based on the polymorphism information content and allele ranges from seven random-bred populations (n = 261) from the USA, Europe and Brazil and eight breeds (n = 200) from the USA. Nineteen microsatellite markers were included in the comparison test and genotyped across the samples. Based on robustness and efficiency, nine autosomal microsatellite markers were ultimately selected as a single multiplex 'core' panel for cat identification and parentage testing. Most markers contained dinucleotide repeats. In addition to the autosomal markers, the panel included two gender-specific markers, amelogenin and zinc-finger XY, which produced genotypes for both the X and Y chromosomes. This international cat parentage and identification panel has a power of exclusion comparable to panels used in other species, ranging from 90.08% to 99.79% across breeds and 99.47% to 99.87% in random-bred cat populations.

- Abstract
Purpose: Orbital pseudotumor (or pseudotumor orbitae) is a benign entity, also known as idiopathic orbital inflammatory syndrome (IOIS), which encompasses a wide range of non-tumoral, space occupying lesions of the orbit. In selected cases of refractory disease or presence of side effects or even comorbidities that limit systemic therapies, radiotherapy could play a role in the management because it has been demonstrated that irradiation is effective in suppressing the inflammatory process. Methods: A systematic review of the literature about the main scientific databases was launched and the time interval included all published articles present in the databases from their inception until September 2020. Results: We were able to identify 19 studies eligible for inclusion in this review from 1978 to 2018. Overall the data of 241 patients were collected and are presented in this systematic review. The response rate varied between 74% and 100% with a median recurrence rate of 10%. The median total dose was 20 Gy whereas the mean total dose was 21 Gy with a range from 4 to 36 Gy. Regarding the fractionation, 2 Gy/fraction daily was the most widely used. Conclusions: Radiotherapy seemed to achieve good response rates however, in most of the studies, inclusion criteria and outcome parameters are not uniform and therefore the results are difficult to compare. Often important parameters such as chronic pain and permanent functional deficits are not assessed in the outcome. Therefore, prospective studies, with good cohort characteristics and a clear definition of the outcome, are required.

- Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate local control and functional and cosmetic outcomes of postoperative high-dose-rate interventional radiotherapy (HDR-IRT) in patients affected by conjunctival melanoma with orbit invasion. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted in 2 patients affected by conjunctival melanoma infiltrating the orbit, treated with surgical excision and HDR-IRT. The treatment procedures consisted of surgical excision of the orbital infiltrating nodule followed, 1 month after surgery, by adjuvant HDR-IRT. A target dose of 34 Gy was delivered in 10 twice-a-day fractions over 5 consecutive days. Data analysis included local tumor control and metastatic rate, acute and late toxicity, functional and aesthetic results. Results: In both patients, treatment was well tolerated, and there was no orbital recurrence at a median follow-up of 37-40 months. There was an excellent functional outcome, without no significant acute or late side effects. Conclusions: HDR-IRT could be considered a promising, feasible, successful, and well-tolerated option for selected patients affected by ocular tumors with orbital invasion.

- Abstract
Aim: The aim of this study was to detect clinical factors predictive of loss of visual acuity after treatment in order to develop a predictive model to help identify patients at risk of visual loss. Patients and Methods: This was a retrospective review of patients who underwent interventional radiotherapy (brachytherapy) with 106Ru plaque for primary uveal melanoma. A predictive nomogram for visual acuity loss at 3 years from treatment was developed. Results: A total of 152 patients were selected for the study. The actuarial probability of conservation of 20/40 vision or better was 0.74 at 1 year, 0.59 at 3 years, and 0.54 at 5 years after treatment. Factors positively correlated with loss of visual acuity included: age at start of treatment (p=0.004) and longitudinal basal diameter (p=0.057), while distance of the posterior margin of the tumor from the foveola was inversely correlated (p=0.0007). Conclusion: We identified risk factors affecting visual function and developed a predictive model and decision support tool (AVATAR nomogram).

- Abstract
(1) Background: Periorificial face cancer (PFC), defined as both squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC) arising around the eyelids, the nose vestibule and the lips, has very high incidence rates worldwide. The aim of our retrospective analysis, focusing on local control (LC) and patients’ degree of satisfaction with the cosmetic outcome, is to present the results of a single institutional series of patients affected by PFC and treated by interventional radiotherapy (brachytherapy–IRT). (2) Methods: We retrospectively evaluated patients affected by PFC who were treated at our Interventional Oncology Center (IOC) with interstitial IRT from 2012 to 2021 with doses and volumes specific for each subsite considered. (3) Results: We report the results of 40 patients affected by PFC and treated by HDR interstitial IRT. The median follow-up was 24 months. The actuarial 3-year LC was 94%. Regarding patients’ satisfaction, we found that 93% of patients were satisfied and only 7% of patients were not completely satisfied with the final cosmetic result. (4) Conclusions: Interstitial HDR IRT could be an effective therapeutic option providing adequate disease control and preventing potentially disfiguring surgical approaches. More numerous and standardized studies are warranted to confirm the available evidence.

8th World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion; 1228-1231, The results reported in the document are related to one of the agrivoltaic (APV) tests in progress in Kourtesi photovoltaic (PV) plant in Greece, as part of the wide experimental program launched by Enel Green Power (EGP) in January 2021. Aromatic species have been implemented in three different areas: in the corridors between two modules rows, underneath the modules and in a control area, free from panels. In addition, in unused marginal areas specific crops have been implemented, enabling new business models, with a circular bioeconomy approach, delivering new win-win solutions for the management of the PV plant and nearby farmers. Proximity and remote sensing networks allow to collect data about all the crops, as a valid support tool to schedule irrigation and fertilization activities. Sustainable agricultural practices have been also implemented, as the use of Riterra, a biodegradable in soil mulching film made of Mater-Bi, a family of completely biodegradable and compostable bioplastics produced by Novamont. Preliminary results for the aromatic species have shown no differences in crops growth between the corridor and the control area. Crops growth monitoring will continue up to 2023, to assess the results and the best sustainable agronomic practices for improving the crops growth.

Objective: The self-isolation measures employed during the COVID-19 pandemic made it difficult for basic needs to be met, thus increasing emotional distress. It has been suggested that socially meaningful online gaming buffered emotional distress during the lockdown. This study aimed to test the protective effect of online gaming during the lockdown and to investigate the differences between highly involved gamers (those who play videogames intensely without adverse consequences) and problematic gamers in this regard. Method: Capitalizing on a data collection that started before the pandemic, we adopted a cross-sectional between-groups study design in which gaming patterns, gaming-related variables and levels of emotional distress were compared between a pre-COVID group (N=298) and a COVID group (N=366). Results: Compared to the pre-COVID group, high involvement in gaming was more prominent and emotional distress was decreased in the COVID group. Moderated regression analyses further revealed that the interaction between social compensation via gaming and highly involved gaming was associated with lower levels of emotional distress in the COVID-19 group. In contrast, the interaction between gaming-related relaxation and problematic gaming predicted higher emotional distress in the COVID-19 group. Conclusions: This study suggests that gaming for social compensation might miti-gate the experienced emotional distress during pandemic related self-isolation, whereas maladaptive gaming patterns could constitute a vulnerability factor deserving clinical attention.

- Abstract
Purpose: Combined hamartoma of the retina and retinal pigment epithelium is a rare benign tumor characterized by a variable combination of glial, vascular, and pigmented components. The purpose of our study was to analyze the features of combined hamartoma of the retina and retinal pigment epithelium on optical coherence tomography angiography. Methods: Small case series of two cases of combined hamartoma of the retina and retinal pigment epithelium with macular and optic nerve involvement, evaluated with multimodal imaging including optical coherence tomography, fluorescein angiography, and optical coherence tomography angiography. Results: On optical coherence tomography, combined hamartoma of the retina and retinal pigment epithelium is characterized by disruption of the inner neurosensory retina and a variable degree of involvement of the external retina. Optical coherence tomography angiography showed diffuse alterations of the retinal vessels of the superficial and deeper layers, extended to the peripapillary area. Vessel abnormalities included increased tortuosity and caliber of vessels, vascular traction, and vessel stretching within the lesion. Conclusion: Optical coherence tomography angiography allows in-depth multilayer analysis of tumor vascular network, highlighting the fine abnormalities of retinal vasculature characteristic of combined hamartoma of the retina and retinal pigment epithelium.

This article discusses the feasibility and accuracy of using the SonosyncTM system, which allows for real-time image streaming and remote control of ultrasound systems, for second trimester ultrasound scans. The study involved 52 low-risk patients, with one skilled operator and five residents in obstetrics and gynecology performing the examinations. The results showed that the SonosyncTM system was able to successfully perform the ultrasound examinations, with good agreement in fetal measurements compared to traditional scanning methods. However, the traditional method had a higher image quality score. The authors conclude that this technology could open up new possibilities in fetal medicine. [Extracted from the article]

- Abstract
Melanoma is an extremely aggressive tumor and is considered to be an extremely immunogenic tumor because compared to other cancers it usually presents a well-expressed lymphoid infiltration. The aim of this paper is to perform a multidisciplinary comprehensive review of the evidence available about the combination of radiotherapy and immunotherapy for melanoma. Radiation, in fact, can increase tumor antigens visibility and promote priming of T cells but can also exert immunosuppressive action on tumor microenvironment. Combining radiotherapy with immunotherapy provides an opportunity to increase immunostimulatory potential of radiation. We therefore provide the latest clinical evidence about radiobiological rationale, radiotherapy techniques, timing, and role both in advanced and systemic disease (with a special focus on ocular melanoma and brain, liver, and bone metastases) with a particular attention also in geriatric patients. The combination of immunotherapy and radiotherapy seems to be a safe therapeutic option, supported by a clear biological rationale, even though the available data confirm that radiotherapy is employed more for metastatic than for non-metastatic disease. Such a combination shows promising results in terms of survival outcomes; however, further studies, hopefully prospective, are needed to confirm such evidence.

- Abstract
Purpose: To analyze the clinical characteristics and long-term follow-up of patients with advanced ocular surface squamous cell carcinoma (OSSC) involving periocular tissues and/or orbit. Primary outcomes were overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), and overall recurrence rate (RR). Secondary outcomes were a correlation between primary outcomes and tumor location, American Joint Committee on Cancer Classification (AJCC) staging system, histological results, surgical margins, and type of treatment. Study design: a retrospective case series. Methods: The medical records of patients affected by OSSC involving periocular tissues and/or orbit referring, from 01/2011 to 01/2020, to our tertiary referral center were reviewed. Results: Thirty-six eyes of 36 patients were included. The mean age was 68.2 years; 18 (50%) patients were males. The mean follow-up was 40 months. The RR was 64%. The OS at 12, 24, 36, and 60 months was respectively 97.1%, 92.7%, 92.7%, and 92.7%. The DFS at 12, 24, 36, and 60 months was respectively 62.9%, 50.8%, 41.6%, and 29.7%. Multicentric disease (p = 0.0039), inferior tarsus localization (p = 0.0428), histological diagnosis of high-risk SSCs (p = 0.0264), positive surgical margins (p = 0.0434), and excisional biopsy (EB) alone (p = 0.0005) were associated with an increased risk of recurrence. A shorter OS was observed in patients who underwent EB alone (p = 0.0049). Conclusion: OSCC involving periocular tissues and/or orbit is an aggressive disease with a high recurrence rate. Multicentric disease, positive surgical margins, inferior tarsus localization, and surgery without adjuvant therapies are strong predictors of recurrence and are the main factors affecting prognosis.[Figure not available: see fulltext.]

Problematic smartphone use ,Settore M-PSI/08 - Psicologia Clinica ,Narcissism ,Gender difference ,Selfie-related behavior - Abstract
Objective: Recent research has suggested that problematic smartphone use is associated with several psychological factors and that mobile apps and smartphone-related behavior (i.e. selfi e behavior) may encourage the development of problematic smartphone use. However, little is known about how the interplay between dysfunctional personality characteristics and selfi e-related behavior can infl uence problematic smartphone use. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between narcissism and problematic smartphone use, as well as the mediating role of selfi e-related behavior in this relationship among young men and women. Method: In the current study, a total of 627 undergraduate students (283 males and 344 females) completed a cross-sectional survey. A structural equation model was tested separately for males and females in order to evaluate the associations between narcissism, selfi e-related behavior and problematic smartphone use. Results: The results showed that greater narcissism was related to increased selfi e-related behavior, which in turn were positively associated with problematic smartphone use both for males and females. However, selfi e-related behavior mediated the relationship between narcissism and problematic smartphone use only for females. Conclusions: The study provides fresh insight into our understanding of the psychological mechanisms underlying problematic smartphone use, which may inform prevention and treatment interventions.

- Abstract
Immunotherapy can be used for cutaneous, mucosal, uveal and conjunctival melanoma. Nevertheless, we cannot expect the same benefit from checkpoint inhibitors for all the types of melanoma. The different biological features can explain the variable efficacy. The main results obtained with immune checkpoint inhibitors in the various types of melanoma were reviewed.

- Abstract
Background: The aim of this study was to analyze patients diagnosed, staged and treated for orbital and eyelid B-cell lymphoma (OEL). Methods: One hundred and forty-one cases of OEL were included in this study. Primary endpoints were to analyze the histopathologic findings, the main risk factors and the type of treatment and to correlate them with recurrence of OEL. The secondary endpoint was to determine the progression-free survival (PFS) time. Results: Extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma was the most frequent subtype (66%), followed by small lymphocytic lymphoma (12.7%), diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) (9.2%), follicular lymphoma (6.6%), mantle cell lymphoma (4.3%) and Burkitt lymphoma (1.2%). The probability of relapse was influenced by the histopathologic subtype DLBCL (OR = 7.7, 95% CI 1.8–32.3) and treatment with chemotherapy (OR = 14.9, 95% CI 2.6–83.7). Multivariate analysis showed that the histopathologic subtype DLBCL and chemotherapy treatment retained statistical significance for a poorer PFS, with hazard ratios of 8.581 (p = 0.0112) and 9.239 (p = 0.0094), respectively. Conclusions: Five lymphoma subtypes were found in patients with OEL. The histopathologic subtype and the type of treatment were found to be the main factors influencing treatment outcome.
