Abstract

This document summarises the current theoretical and experimental status of the di-Higgs boson production searches, and of the direct and indirect constraints on the Higgs boson self-coupling, with the wish to serve as a useful guide for the next years. The document discusses the theoretical status, including state-of-the-art predictions for di-Higgs cross sections, developments on the effective field theory approach, and studies on specific new physics scenarios that can show up in the di-Higgs final state. The status of di-Higgs searches and the direct and indirect constraints on the Higgs self-coupling at the LHC are presented, with an overview of the relevant experimental techniques, and covering all the variety of relevant signatures. Finally, the capabilities of future colliders in determining the Higgs self-coupling are addressed, comparing the projected precision that can be obtained in such facilities. The work has started as the proceedings of the Di-Higgs workshop at Colliders, held at Fermilab from the 4th to the 9th of September 2018, but it went beyond the topics discussed at that workshop and included further developments., Comment: 279 pages, 136 figures, document produced partially as outcome of the conference Double Higgs Production at Colliders - Fermilab - Chicago (US) 4 - 9 September 2018. Abstract

The Belle II detector will provide a major step forward in precision heavy flavor physics, quarkonium and exotic states, searches for dark sectors, and many other areas. The sensitivity to a large number of key observables can be improved by about an order of magnitude compared to the current measurements, and up to two orders in very clean search measurements. This increase in statistical precision arises not only due to the increased luminosity, but also from improved detector efficiency and precision for many channels. Many of the most interesting observables tend to have very small theoretical uncertainties that will therefore not limit the physics reach. This book has presented many new ideas for measurements, both to elucidate the nature of current anomalies seen in flavor, and to search for new phenomena in a plethora of observables that will become accessible with the Belle II dataset. The simulation used for the studiesinthis book was state ofthe artat the time, though weare learning a lot more about the experiment during the commissioning period. The detector is in operation, and working spectacularly well.

Abstract

This report represents the response of the Intensity Frontier Quark Flavor Physics Working Group to the Snowmass charge. We summarize the current status of quark flavor physics and identify many exciting future opportunities for studying the properties of strange, charm, and bottom quarks. The ability of these studies to reveal the effects of new physics at high mass scales make them an essential ingredient in a well-balanced experimental particle physics program.

Abstract

One of the major challenges of particle physics has been to gain an in-depth understanding of the role of quark flavor and measurements and theoretical interpretations of their results have advanced tremendously: apart from masses and quantum numbers of flavor particles, there now exist detailed measurements of the characteristics of their interactions allowing stringent tests of Standard Model predictions. Among the most interesting phenomena of flavor physics is the violation of the CP symmetry that has been subtle and difficult to explore. Till early 1990s observations of CP violation were confined to neutral $K$ mesons, but since then a large number of CP-violating processes have been studied in detail in neutral $B$ mesons. In parallel, measurements of the couplings of the heavy quarks and the dynamics for their decays in large samples of $K, D$, and $B$ mesons have been greatly improved in accuracy and the results are being used as probes in the search for deviations from the Standard Model. In the near future, there will be a transition from the current to a new generation of experiments, thus a review of the status of quark flavor physics is timely. Abstract

With the advent of the LHC, we will be able to probe New Physics (NP) up to energy scales almost one order of magnitude larger than it has been possible with present accelerator facilities. While direct detection of new particles will be the main avenue to establish the presence of NP at the LHC, indirect searches will provide precious complementary information, since most probably it will not be possible to measure the full spectrum of new particles and their couplings through direct production. In particular, precision measurements and computations in the realm of flavour physics are expected to play a key role in constraining the unknown parameters of the Lagrangian of any NP model emerging from direct searches at the LHC. Abstract

This chapter of the report of the ``Flavour in the era of the LHC'' Workshop discusses the theoretical, phenomenological and experimental issues related to flavour phenomena in the charged lepton sector and in flavour-conserving CP-violating processes. We review the current experimental limits and the main theoretical models for the flavour structure of fundamental particles. Abstract

We calculate a number of observables related to particle-antiparticle mixing in the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity (LHT). The resulting effective Hamiltonian for Delta F=2 transitions agrees with the one of Hubisz et al., but our phenomenological analysis goes far beyond the one of these authors. In particular, we point out that the presence of mirror fermions with new flavour and CP-violating interactions allows to remove the possible Standard Model (SM) discrepancy between the CP asymmetry S_{psi K_S} and large values of |V_ub| and to obtain for the mass difference Delta M_s < (Delta M_s)_SM as suggested by the recent result by the CDF collaboration. We also identify a scenario in which simultaneously significant enhancements of the CP asymmetries S_{phi psi} and A_SL^q relative to the SM are possible, while satisfying all existing constraints, in particular from the B -> X_s gamma decay and A_CP(B -> X_s gamma) that are presented in the LHT model here for the first time. In another scenario the second, non-SM, value for the angle gamma=-(109+-6) from tree level decays, although unlikely, can be made consistent with all existing data with the help of mirror fermions. We present a number of correlations between the observables in question and study the implications of our results for the mass spectrum and the weak mixing matrix of mirror fermions. In the most interesting scenarios, the latter one turns out to have a hierarchical structure that differs significantly from the CKM one., Comment: 51 pages, 20 figures, 1 table. Abstract

Climate change is responsible for major alterations in the phenology of fruit trees in Germany. Observations over the past 70 years at 3 study sites in Germany have shown the flowering of apple trees and subsequently, fruit development to set is continuously earlier, with serious implications for fruit quality as well as storability. Calcium (Ca) plays an important role in stabilizing cell walls in all fruit including apple; sufficient calcium supply is, therefore, essential for good storability and for controlling postharvest disorders. However, as Ca is phloem immobile, the transport of the mineral into the fruit occurs solely with the transpiration stream through the xylem. Ca accumulates in the first weeks after flowering, in which the fruit shows the highest transpiration per unit (surface or mass) and subsequently the greatest transport of water. With an earlier flower onset, Ca uptake may suffer as the evapotranspiration and therefore the transport of Ca is reduced due to fewer sunlight hours in a shorter photoperiod and a smaller thermal amplitude early in the season. However, Ca deficiency and an unfavorable relation to its antagonist potassium can increase the risk of the accelerated loss of firmness or the emergence of disorders such as bitter pit or flesh browning. On account of this significant role of Ca for long-term fruit storability, a project was launched with the objective to assess the long-term effects of climate change on the Ca nutrition of apples cultivated in Germany. Climate data of the past 60 years will be analyzed and related to the recordings of apple tree phenology development stages in the respective years, in order to estimate the evapotranspiration potential during the main period of Ca uptake. 23. Tragbares Ethylenmessgerät mit hoher Auflösung durch neue Sensortechnologie

Abstract

Zusammenfassung: Berichtet wird über Erfahrungen mit einem neuen Gerät zur Bestimmung der Konzentration von gasförmigem Ethylen (C2H4) in der Luft mit einem elektrokatalytischen Sensor. Das Messprinzip beruht auf der Oxidation von Ethylen zu CO2 und H2O an einer goldbeschichteten Anode mithilfe von verdünnter Schwefelsäure als Katalysator. Die relativ kleinen Ethylenmoleküle setzen sich in die Zwischenräume der Goldpartikel; bei dieser Messung wird daher etwas (ca. 15%) Ethylen verbraucht. Vor und während des Betriebes eicht das Gerät automatisch seinen Nullpunkt mit getrocknetem, ethylenfreiem Gas aus den eingebauten Trocken- und Kaliumpermanganatsäulen; vor Inbetriebnahme ist eine Eichung mit externem, möglichst befeuchtetem Eichgas zwischen 4 und 10 ppm C2H4 notwendig; die Reproduzierbarkeit der Eichwerte von 8 ppm C2H4 lag nach der Eichung bei 96–98% mit einer Standardabweichung von 0,05–0,15 ppm C2H4 und einem Variationskoeffizienten von 0,5–2%. Der Messbereich beträgt 0–50 ppm C2H4 mit einer Genauigkeit von ± 5% und Anzeige auf 1 ppb C2H4 und ist damit sowohl für Messungen an einzelnen Früchten als auch in einem Lagerraum und für Untersuchungen zur Stressphysiologie geeignet. Eine Messung dauert ca. 30 Sekunden und benötigt eine ca. 150 ml Gasprobe. Die Gerätekonfiguration erlaubt sowohl eine kontinuierliche Messung im offenen Gasstrom als auch im geschlossenen Gaskreislauf (z. B. mit einem geschlossenen Gefäß) jeweils bei einer Durchflussrate von 200 ml/min, eine manuell ausgelöste Einzelmessung als auch eine herkömmliche Injektion einer Gasprobe von ca. 5 ml. Neben der Ethylenkonzentration werden Temperatur und Feuchte des Luftstromes – mit Geräteoption auf eine von drei zusätzlichen Messzellen für CO2, MCP oder andere Gase mit Kohlenstoff und kleiner Molekülgröße – mit gemessen und angezeigt. Bei Messungen an verschiedenen Früchten lag die Reproduzierbarkeit der Messwerte bei 93%. Das vorgestellte Gerät kann mit Netzstrom oder bis zu ca. 8 h über Akku betrieben werden, wiegt inkl. Akku ca. 4,5 kg und ist somit mobil, benötigt aber entweder Eichgas vor Ort oder bleibt beim Transport angeschaltet, um die Eichung mit externem Eichgas nicht zu verlieren. Es stellt eine Ergänzung oder Alternative zur herkömmlichen Laborbestimmung von Ethylen mit Gasprobenahme aus dem Headspace eines verschlossenen Gefäßes mit Bestimmung in einem Gaschromatograf mit N2 als Trägergas, Poropak-Q-Säule und Flammenionisations-Detektor (FID) dar.

Abstract

The field of particle physics is at the crossroads. The discovery of a Higgs-like boson completed the Standard Model (SM), but the lacking observation of convincing resonances Beyond the SM (BSM) offers no guidance for the future of particle physics. On the other hand, the motivation for New Physics has not diminished and is, in fact, reinforced by several striking anomalous results in many experiments. Here we summarise the status of the most significant anomalies, including the most recent results for the flavour anomalies, the multi-lepton anomalies at the LHC, the Higgs-like excess at around 96 GeV, and anomalies in neutrino physics, astrophysics, cosmology, and cosmic rays. While the LHC promises up to 4 ab of integrated luminosity and far-reaching physics programmes to unveil BSM physics, we consider the possibility that the latter could be tested with present data, but that systemic shortcomings of the experiments and their search strategies may preclude their discovery for several reasons, including: final states consisting in soft particles only, associated production processes, QCD-like final states, close-by SM resonances, and SUSY scenarios where no missing energy is produced. New search strategies could help to unveil the hidden BSM signatures, devised by making use of the CERN open data as a new testing ground. We discuss the CERN open data with its policies, challenges, and potential usefulness for the community. We showcase the example of the CMS collaboration, which is the only collaboration regularly releasing some of its data. We find it important to stress that individuals using public data for their own research does not imply competition with experimental efforts, but rather provides unique opportunities to give guidance for further BSM searches by the collaborations. Wide access to open data is paramount to fully exploit the LHCs potential.
