Abstract

Self-terminating atrial arrhythmias are commonly detected on continuous rhythm monitoring, e.g. by pacemakers or defibrillators. It is unclear whether the presence of these arrhythmias has therapeutic consequences. We sought to summarize evidence on the prevalence of atrial high-rate episodes (AHREs) and their impact on risk of stroke. We performed a comprehensive, tabulated review of published literature on the prevalence of AHRE. In patients with AHRE, but without atrial fibrillation (AF), we reviewed the stroke risk and the potential risk/benefit of oral anticoagulation. Atrial high-rate episodes are found in 10-30% of AF-free patients. Presence of AHRE slightly increases stroke risk (0.8% to 1%/year) compared with patients without AHRE. Atrial high-rate episode of longer duration (e.g. those >24 h) could be associated with a higher stroke risk. Oral anticoagulation has the potential to reduce stroke risk in patients with AHRE but is associated with a rate of major bleeding of 2%/year. Oral anticoagulation is not effective in patients with heart failure or survivors of a stroke without AF. It remains unclear whether anticoagulation is effective and safe in patients with AHRE. Atrial high-rate episodes are common and confer a slight increase in stroke risk. There is true equipoise on the best way to reduce stroke risk in patients with AHRE. Two ongoing trials (NOAH-AFNET 6 and ARTESiA) will provide much-needed information on the effectiveness and safety of oral anticoagulation using non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants in patients with AHRE.

Abstract

Die verschiedenen Meßverfahren zur Bestimmung von Bodenwassergehalten und der Bodenfeuchte konnten während ihres Einsatzes im Uvs-Nuur-Becken über einen längeren Zeitraum hinweg erprobt werden. Dabei stellte sich heraus, daß die Thetasonde und die Stechzylinderproben sich zur Bestimmung des volumetrischen Bodenwassergehalts gut eignen. An den Standorten, an denen parallele Messungen mit beiden Verfahren möglich waren, zeigten Vergleiche der Meßreihen, daß sich die beiden Methoden gegenseitig bestätigen. Nur in Einzelfällen traten größere Abweichungen zwischen den Tageswerten auf. Einschränkend auf die Anwendbarkeit der Verfahren und die Genauigkeit der Meßergebnisse kann sich die Bodenbeschaffenheit auswirken. In stark verdichteten oder skelettreichen Böden ist das Einbringen der Sondenmeßstäbe schwierig und stellenweise nicht möglich. Derartige Böden sind auch für die Entnahme von Stechzylinderproben problematisch, da es schwierig ist Materialverluste bei der Entnahme gering zuhalten. Die Verfahren zur Bestimmung der Bodenfeuchte, Tensiometer und Gipsblocksensoren, hatten gegenüber den anderen Verfahren den Vorteil, daß sie automatisiert waren. Auf diese Weise konnte auch ohne intensive Betreuung eine hohe zeitliche Meßdichte erzielt werden. Über eine Eichkurve, die im Labor erstellt wurde, konnten den Wasserspannungen die entsprechenden Bodenwassergehalte zugeordnet werden. Für Station S 2 sind die Tensiometermeßwerte gut geeignet, um zusammen mit den Stechzylinderproben die Bodenwasserdynamik zu beschreiben. An den anderen Standorten liegen die Wassergehalte, die man über die Eichkurve erhält, verglichen mit Thetasonden- und Stechzylinderwerten sehr viel höher. Beim Einsatz von Tensiometern und Gipsblocksensoren in diesem Gebiet muß aufgrund des geringen Bodenwassergehalts vieler Standorte besonders darauf geachtet werden, daß die Sensoren bzw. die Kerzen eng vom Boden umschlossen sind, ansonsten kann es zu erheblichen Beeinträchtigungen der Meßgenauigkeit kommen. Bei den Tensiometern muß zusätzlich darauf geachtet werden, daß der Meßbereich nicht überschritten wird. Die Variabilität zwischen den Bodenwassergehalten der Standorte ergibt sich aus ihrer Lage im Untersuchungsgebiet und dem Witterungsgeschehen. Die deutlichsten Unterschiede zeigen sich beim Vergleich der Standorte der Ebenen und der Hangbereiche. An den Standorten in der Ebene ist die potentielle Evapotranspiration höher als an den Hangstandorten, dies wirkt sich auf die absolute Höhe der Bodenwassergehalte und auf ihre Variabilität aus. In der Ebene gehen die Bodenwassergehalte nach einer Erhöhung durch Niederschlagseinträge aufgrund der starken Evapotranspiration relativ schnell wieder zurück, so kommt es zu einer hohen Variabilität. An den Hangstandorten ist dieser Effekt abgeschwächt, besonders gering ist die potentielle Verdunstung im Wald am Standort S 7. Die Meßreihen dort weisen geringere Gegensätze zwischen den Extrema auf. Die signifikanten Unterschiede der Bodenwassergehalte verschiedener Meßtiefen eines Standortes werden anhand Variationskoeffizienten der Meßreihen deutlich. In 5 cm Bodentiefe spiegelt sich das aktuelle atmosphärische Geschehen wider. Niederschlagseinträge werden durch eine unmittelbare Erhöhung des Bodenwassergehalts sichtbar. Ist die potentielle Verdunstung nach einer Erhöhung der Bodenwassergehalte durch Niederschlagseinträge hoch, verringern sich die Bodenwassergehalte in dieser Meßtiefe auch schnell wieder. In den Bereichen ab 20 cm Bodentiefe sind kurzfristige Erhöhungen des Bodenwassergehalts nur nach sehr starken Niederschlägen zu beobachten. Veränderungen wie der allmähliche Rückgang des Bodenwassergehalts in den tieferen Bodenschichten an S 3 sind nur über einen längeren Zeitraum festzustellen. Die zeitliche Variabilität der Bodenwassergehalte wird vom Witterungsgeschehen, insbesondere den Niederschlägen und der potentiellen Verdunstung, bestimmt. Im Sommer 1998 ist das Verhältnis von Niederschlag und potentieller Verdunstung so, daß auch nach den Hauptniederschlägen des Jahres in den Sommermonaten keine Erhöhung der Bodenwassergehalte stattgefunden hat. An Station S 3 ist in den tieferen Bodenschichten eine Austrocknung zu verzeichnen. Dies ist der Hauptunterschied zwischen den Jahren 1997 und 1998. 1997 fällt sehr viel mehr Regen als 1998, es kommt zu einer nachhaltigen Durchfeuchtung des Bodens. Auch die Verdunstung ist 1997 geringer. Nach Niederschlägen findet daher kein so schneller Rückgang der Bodenwassergehalte wie 1998 statt, und die Variabilität der Meßwerte ist geringer. Es ist anzunehmen, daß die Bodenwassergehalte am Anfang der Meßperiode des Jahres 1998, die im Laufe des Meßzeitraums abnehmen, Vorräte aus den Einträgen des Jahres 1997 darstellen. Eine nachhaltige Durchfeuchtung des Bodens findet also nur bei sehr hohen Niederschlagseinträgen wie im Jahr 1997 statt. Different methods to detect soil water contents were tested in the Uvs-Nuur basin, Mongolia, over a period of three months. Frequency domain probes and soil cores were suited to determine the volumetric soil water content. Accuracy depended on soil properties. Tensiometers and gypsum block methods were difficult to apply because of the loose soil structure. The variability of the soil water contents is caused by spatial variability and the weather situation. Clearest differences among soil water contents were found comparing sites in the plain and in mountainous areas due to higher evapotranspiration in the plain. Temporal variability is mostly depending on rainfall. Soil moisture is stored for longer time after rainfall in the mountainous areas due to less evapotranspiration.

13. Sensitivity of plant functional types to climate change: classification tree analysis of a simulation model

Abstract

Question: The majority of studies investigating the impact of climate change on local plant communities ignores changes in regional processes, such as immigration from the regional seed pool. Here we explore: (i) the potential impact of climate change on composition of the regional seed pool, (ii) the influence of changes in climate and in the regional seed pool on local community structure, and (iii) the combinations of life history traits, i.e. plant functional types (PFTs), that are most affected by environmental changes.Location: Fire-prone, Mediterranean-type shrublands in southwestern Australia.Methods: Spatially explicit simulation experiments were conducted at the population level under different rainfall and fire regime scenarios to determine the effect of environmental change on the regional seed pool for 38 PFTs. The effects of environmental and seed immigration changes on local community dynamics were then derived from community-level experiments. Classification tree analyses were used to investigate PFT-specific vulnerabilities to climate change.Results: The classification tree analyses revealed that responses of PFTs to climate change are determined by specific trait characteristics. PFT-specific seed production and community patterns responded in a complex manner to climate change. For example, an increase in annual rainfall caused an increase in numbers of dispersed seeds for some PFTs, but decreased PFT diversity in the community. Conversely, a simulated decrease in rainfall reduced the number of dispersed seeds and diversity of PFTs.Conclusions: PFT interactions and regional processes must be considered when assessing how local community structure will be affected by environmental change.

That is why the amounts of nitrogen applied should be utilized as efficiently as possible. Efficiency control balances must also take into account the area below the root zone and trace back the path of nitrate, a substance that is soluble in water, into the water bodies. With a view to quantifying nitrogen metabolism and transport during underground passage, this paper gives an overview of different levels of examination (outdoors, lysimeter, and laboratory), the methods and technologies to be used in each case, and their problems and limits. Special consideration is given to the transition points between unsaturated soil zones, groundwater spaces, and receiving waters.

26. Spatial variability of N2O, CH4 and CO2 fluxes within the Xilin River catchment of Inner Mongolia, China: a soil core study.

Abstract

In order to identify the effects of land-use/cover types, soil types and soil properties on the soil-atmosphere exchange of greenhouse gases (GHG) in semiarid grasslands as well as provide a reliable estimate of the midsummer GHG budget, nitrous oxide (N2O), methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes of soil cores from 30 representative sites were determined in the upper Xilin River catchment in Inner Mongolia. The soil N2O emissions across all of the investigated sites ranged from 0.18 to 21.8 μg N m-2 h-1, with a mean of 3.4 μg N m-2 h-1 and a coefficient of variation (CV, which is given as a percentage ratio of one standard deviation to the mean) as large as 130%. CH4 fluxes ranged from -88.6 to 2,782.8 μg C m-2 h-1 (with a CV of 849%). Net CH4 emissions were only observed from cores taken from a marshland site, whereas all of the other 29 investigated sites showed net CH4 uptake (mean: -33.3 μg C m-2 h-1). CO2 emissions from all sites ranged from 3.6 to 109.3 mg C m-2 h-1, with a mean value of 37.4 mg C m-2 h-1 and a CV of 66%. Soil moisture primarily and positively regulated the spatial variability in N2O and CO2 emissions (R2 = 0.15–0.28, P < 0.05). The spatial variation of N2O emissions was also influenced by soil inorganic N contents ( P < 0.05). By simply up-scaling the site measurements by the various land-use/cover types to the entire catchment area (3,900 km2), the fluxes of N2O, CH4 and CO2 at the time of sampling (mid-summer 2007) were estimated at 29 t CO2-C-eq d-1, -26 t CO2-C-eq d-1 and 3,223 t C d-1, respectively. This suggests that, in terms of assessing the spatial variability of total GHG fluxes from the soils at a semiarid catchment/region, intensive studies may focus on CO2 exchange, which is dominating the global warming potential of midsummer soil-atmosphere GHG fluxes. In addition, average GHG fluxes in midsummer, weighted by the areal extent of these land-use/cover types in the region, were approximately -30.0 μg C m-2 h-1 for CH4, 2.4 μg N m-2 h-1 for N2O and 34.5 mg C m-2 h-1 for CO2. Abstract

A group of aralkylaminoethyl esters and ureas of substituted carbanilic acids was prepared and studied for hypocholesteremic activity in eucholesteremic mice. Biological results indicated that modification of either terminal aromatic ring altered the activity of the resultant compound. The metaand paramethyl substituted carbanilates of aralkylmethylaminoethanol consistently exhibited the most desirable effect. In the dicarbanilate series of aralkyl or aryl substituted iminodiethanols, no appreciable activity was seen.

Abstract

Three pathways leading to the methyl ethers of 3,3′,5-triiodo-D and L-thyronine were explored. In these syntheses the acetyl, benzoyl, and trifluoroacetyl groups were studied as suitable amine-protecting groups, thus providing a number of hitherto unreported thyronine derivatives. Consideration of the over-all yields and the quality of the products from the various reaction sequences showed that the acetyl group was best suited for the protection of the amino group in these syntheses.
