Abstract

BackgroundThe coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic significantly affected management of cardiovascular disease around the world. The effect of the pandemic on volume of cardiovascular diagnostic procedures is not known.ObjectivesThis study sought to evaluate the effects of the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic on cardiovascular diagnostic procedures and safety practices in Asia.MethodsThe International Atomic Energy Agency conducted a worldwide survey to assess changes in cardiovascular procedure volume and safety practices caused by COVID-19. Testing volumes were reported for March 2020 and April 2020 and were compared to those from March 2019. Data from 180 centers across 33 Asian countries were grouped into 4 subregions for comparison.ResultsProcedure volumes decreased by 47% from March 2019 to March 2020, showing recovery from March 2020 to April 2020 in Eastern Asia, particularly in China. The majority of centers cancelled outpatient activities and increased time per study. Practice changes included implementing physical distancing and restricting visitors. Although COVID testing was not commonly performed, it was conducted in one-third of facilities in Eastern Asia. The most severe reductions in procedure volumes were observed in lower-income countries, where volumes decreased 81% from March 2019 to April 2020.ConclusionsThe COVID-19 pandemic in Asia caused significant reductions in cardiovascular diagnostic procedures, particularly in low-income countries. Further studies on effects of COVID-19 on cardiovascular outcomes and changes in care delivery are warranted.

ObjectivesThis study sought to quantify and compare the decline in volumes of cardiovascular procedures between the United States and non-U.S. institutions during the early phase of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the care of many non-COVID-19 illnesses. Reductions in diagnostic cardiovascular testing around the world have led to concerns over the implications of reduced testing for cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality.MethodsData were submitted to the INCAPS-COVID (International Atomic Energy Agency Non-Invasive Cardiology Protocols Study of COVID-19), a multinational registry comprising 909 institutions in 108 countries (including 155 facilities in 40 U.S. states), assessing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on volumes of diagnostic cardiovascular procedures. Data were obtained for April 2020 and compared with volumes of baseline procedures from March 2019. We compared laboratory characteristics, practices, and procedure volumes between U.S. and non-U.S. facilities and between U.S. geographic regions and identified factors associated with volume reduction in the United States.ResultsReductions in the volumes of procedures in the United States were similar to those in non-U.S. facilities (68% vs. 63%, respectively; p = 0.237), although U.S. facilities reported greater reductions in invasive coronary angiography (69% vs. 53%, respectively; p

Its effects on delivery of diagnostic care for cardiovascular disease, which remains the leading cause of death worldwide, have not been quantified.ObjectivesThe study sought to assess COVID-19's impact on global cardiovascular diagnostic procedural volumes and safety practices.MethodsThe International Atomic Energy Agency conducted a worldwide survey assessing alterations in cardiovascular procedure volumes and safety practices resulting from COVID-19. Noninvasive and invasive cardiac testing volumes were obtained from participating sites for March and April 2020 and compared with those from March 2019. Availability of personal protective equipment and pandemic-related testing practice changes were ascertained.ResultsSurveys were submitted from 909 inpatient and outpatient centers performing cardiac diagnostic procedures, in 108 countries. Procedure volumes decreased 42% from March 2019 to March 2020, and 64% from March 2019 to April 2020. Transthoracic echocardiography decreased by 59%, transesophageal echocardiography 76%, and stress tests 78%, which varied between stress modalities. Abstract

This study presents the continuation of the analysis of variations of atmospheric and space weather parameters above Iberian Peninsula along two years near the 24th solar cycle maximum presented in Morozova et al. [2016]. Previously, the first mode of the principal component analysis was shown to correlate with the lower stratospheric ozone and anti-correlate with cosmic ray flux. In this paper we discuss the second mode that, to our mind, suggests a coupling between the stratosphere and ionosphere. This second mode, located in the low and middle stratosphere and explaining 6-15\% of temperature and 2.5\% of geopotential height variations, positively correlates with the middle-stratospheric ozone content. Among locally measured space weather parameters, this atmospheric mode negatively correlates with the ionospheric total electron content. The stratospheric-ionospheric coupling was analyzed using the correlation and wavelet analyses. Found similarities between variations of the stratospheric and ionospheric parameters were tested with a method allowing estimation of the causal nature of the found relationships, the convergent cross mapping (CCM). 48. Novel Gene Biomarkers Specific to Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells Isolated from Bone Marrow.

Abstract

In this paper, we present a comparative analysis of the transcriptomic profile of three different human cell types: hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and fibroblasts (FIBs). The work aims to identify unique genes that are differentially expressed as specific markers of bone marrow-derived MSCs, and to achieve this undertakes a detailed analysis of three independent datasets that include quantification of the global gene expression profiles of three primary cell types: HSCs, MSCs and FIBs. A robust bioinformatics method, called GlobalTest, is used to assess the specific association between one or more genes expressed in a sample and the outcome variable, that is, the 'cell type' provided as a single univariate response. This outcome variable is predicted for each sample tested, based on the expression profile of the specific genes that are used as input to the test. The precision of the tests is calculated along with the statistical sensitivity and specificity for each gene in each dataset, yielding four genes that mark MSCs with high accuracy. Among these, the best performer is the protein-coding gene Transgelin (TAGLN, Gene ID: 6876) (with a Positive Predictive Value > 0.96 and FDR < 0.001), which identifies MSCs better than any of the currently used standard markers: ENG (CD105), THY1 (CD90) or NT5E (CD73). Abstract

Selectable marker genes are useful for recognizing which cells have integrated specific sequences in their genome after genetic transformation processes. They are especially important for fruit trees genetic transformation to individuate putatively genetically modified events, because most of the protocols used to genetic engineer these species are often unsuccessful or with low efficiency. Traditional selectable marker genes, mainly of bacterial origin, confer antibiotics/herbicides-resistance or metabolic advantages to transformed cells. Genes that allow the visual recognition of engineered tissues without using any selective agent, such as morphogenic regulators and reporter genes, are also used as selection tools to in vitro identify genetically modified regenerated lines. As final step, genetic engineered plants should be tested in field conditions, where selectable marker genes are no longer necessary, and strongly unpopular especially for the commercial development of the new products. Thus, different approaches, mainly based on the use of site-specific recombinases and/or editing nucleases, are being now used to recover marker-free fruit crops. This review describes and comments the most used and suitable selection tools of interest, particularly for fruit tree genetic engineering. Abstract

We as authors represent two organizations engaged in a research-practice partnership (RPP) focused primarily on an intergenerational participatory action research project (PAR). Given the way we co-constructed our work in this partnership, we desired a co-constructed approach to evaluating the work as well. This paper uses duoethnography as a methodology to evaluate our PAR process and partnership, with a goal of examining the degree to which our work aligned with and departed from established principles of community-based research and critical participatory action research. Findings showed that our process and partnership aligned with some principles, but there is room for growth if we hope to fully support co-researchers on future PAR projects. We see the potential for duoethnography to facilitate ongoing, critical reflection and relationship building across RPPs. We also see it as a powerful mode of evaluation for RPPs because of its ability to surface insights that may get missed through more traditional evaluation methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
