Abstract

Forces and torques exerted by a superconducting torus on a permanent magnet have been mapped. It is demonstrated that stable orbits exist. Moreover, provided that the magnet remains in any of these orbits, the first critical field in the superconductor is never overpassed and the superconductor remains in the Meissner state. The consequent absence of hysteresis makes these kinds of device perfect candidates for non-frictional bearings or gyroscopes., Comment: accepted version

Abstract

Contactless bearings based on both permanent magnets and superconducting magnetic levitation are interesting to avoid all the tribological problems associated with contact at very low temperature. Superconducting magnetic bearings (SMBs) find application in mechanical engineering where lack of contact is a requirement or an advantage. In comparison with active magnetic bearings (AMBs), SMBs solve their inherent instability and require less complex control strategies and electronics. However, one of the current limitations is their low mechanical stiffness. Force densities are considerably lower in SMB than the state-of-art values for AMB. This fact certainly limits their applications. In this chapter, we summarize some key strategies for the improvement of radial and axial stiffness among with a description of some SMB in terms of load capability or force relaxation and discuss their advantages and disadvantages.A set of rules for the mechanical design of high-stiffness thrust superconducting magnetic bearings are proposed and experimentally demonstrated. 4. Engineering and performance of a contactless linear slider based on superconducting magnetic levitation for precision positioning

Abstract

In this paper, a contactless linear slider for precision positioning able to operate in cryogenic environments is presented. The device, based on superconducting magnetic levitation, does not present contact between the slider (composed of a permanent magnet) and the guideline (made of high-temperature superconducting disks) of the mechanism, thereby avoiding any tribological problems. Moreover, the slider is self-stable and the superconductors provide inherent guidance to the permanent magnet in the sliding DoF due to the high translational symmetry of the magnetic field that leads to low power consumption. A sub-micrometre resolution and a symmetric stroke over 9 mm have been demonstrated at cryogenic temperatures. In addition, a set of design rules for this kind of mechanism has been proposed and experimentally validated. These rules demonstrate that the performance of the device can be tuned just by modifying some geometrical parameters of the mechanism. In this way, the sensitivity and stiffness, resolution, angular run outs and power consumption can be adjusted for different applications and requirements., Comment: Accepted paper after embargo period

10. Data-driven Adaptive Benders Decomposition for the Stochastic Unit Commitment Problem

Abstract

This paper proposes a data-driven version of the Benders decomposition algorithm applied to the stochastic unit commitment (SUC) problem. The proposed methodology aims at finding a trade-off between the size of the Benders master problem and the number of iterations until convergence. Using clustering techniques, we exploit the information contained in the Lagrange multipliers of the Benders subproblems in order to aggregate the optimality cuts, without compromising the critical information that is passed to the master problem. In addition, we develop an outer parallelization scheme that finds the optimal solution of the SUC problem by solving a series of less computationally intensive SUC instances for certain partitions of the scenario set. Our computational results on the IEEE 3-Area RTS-96 power system, illustrate the improved performance of our data-driven Benders algorithm, in terms of solution time and problem size, compared both to the SUC extensive formulation and to the prevailing single- and multi-cut Benders formulations.

14. Operational planning and bidding for district heating systems with uncertain renewable energy production

Abstract

In countries with an extended use of district heating (DH), the integrated operation of DH and power systems can increase the flexibility of the power system achieving a higher integration of renewable energy sources (RES). DH operators can not only provide flexibility to the power system by acting on the electricity market, but also profit from the situation to lower the overall system cost. However, the operational planning and bidding includes several uncertain components at the time of planning: electricity prices as well as heat and power production from RES. In this publication, we propose a planning method that supports DH operators by scheduling the production and creating bids for the day-ahead and balancing electricity markets. The method is based on stochastic programming and extends bidding strategies for virtual power plants to the DH application. The uncertain factors are considered explicitly through scenario generation. We apply our solution approach to a real case study in Denmark and perform an extensive analysis of the production and trading behaviour of the DH system. The analysis provides insights on how DH system can provide regulating power as well as the impact of uncertainties and renewable sources on the planning. Furthermore, the case study shows the benefit in terms of cost reductions from considering a portfolio of units and both markets to adapt to RES production and market states.

Abstract

Due to the new carbon neutral policies, many district heating operators start operating their combined heat and power (CHP) plants using different types of biomass instead of fossil fuel. The contracts with the biomass suppliers are negotiated months in advance and involve many uncertainties from the energy producer's side. The demand for biomass is uncertain at that time, and heat demand and electricity prices vary drastically during the planning period. Furthermore, the optimal operation of combined heat and power plants has to consider the existing synergies between the power and heating systems. We propose a solution method using stochastic optimization to support the biomass supply planning for combined heat and power plants. Our two-phase approach determines mid-term decisions about biomass supply contracts as well as short-term decisions regarding the optimal production of the producer to ensure profitability and feasibility. We present results based on two realistic test cases.

We propose a bidding method for the participation of combined heat and power (CHP) units in the day-ahead electricity market. More specifically, we consider a district heating system where heat can be produced by CHP units or heat-only units, e.g., gas or wood chip boilers. Based on the optimal production of subsets of units, we can derive the bidding prices and amounts of electricity offered by the CHP units for the day-ahead market. The novelty about our approach is that the prices are derived by iteratively replacing the production of heat-only units through CHP production. This results in an algorithm with a robust bidding strategy that does not increase the system costs even if the bids are not won. We analyze our method on a small realistic test case to illustrate our method and compare it with other bidding strategies from literature, which consider CHP units individually. The analysis shows that considering a portfolio of units in a district heating system and determining bids based on replacement of heat production of other units leads to better results.

Abstract

Enforcing strict protocols that prevent transmission of airborne infections in prisons is challenging. We examine a large severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 outbreak in a Catalan penitentiary center in February–April 2021, prior to vaccination deployment. The aim was to describe the evolution of the outbreak using classical and genomic epidemiology and the containment strategy applied. The outbreak was initially detected in 1 module but spread to 4, infecting 7 staff members and 140 incarcerated individuals, 6 of whom were hospitalized (4.4%). Genomic analysis confirmed a single origin (B.1.1.7). Contact tracing identified transmission vectors between modules and prevented further viral spread. Introduction: The prevalence of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) in Macaronesia (i.e., Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands, and Cape Verde archipelagos) is poorly known. Our goal was to update it by selecting the most reliable available articles. Method: Literature search using MEDLINE, Embase (via Ovid), and Google Scholar, until December 2023, for studies on prevalence of AATD in the general population and in screenings, published in peer-reviewed journals. Results: Three studies carried out in the general population of Madeira, La Palma, and Cape Verde, and three screenings carried out in La Palma (2) and Gran Canaria (1) were selected. The frequencies of PI*S in the general population showed an ascending gradient, from South to North, with values (per thousand) of 35 in Cape Verde, 82 in La Palma, and 180 in Madeira. The PI*Z frequencies showed this same gradient, with values of 2 × 1,000 in Cape Verde, 21 in La Palma, and 25 in Madeira. Screenings detected high percentages of defective alleles, including several rare and null alleles, some unique to these islands. Conclusion: The frequencies of PI*S and PI*Z in Madeira are comparable to the highest in the world. Those of the Canary Islands are similar to those of the peninsular population of Spain, and contrast with the low rates of Cape Verde. Screenings detected high numbers of deficient alleles. These results support the systematic investigation of AATD in clinically suspected patients and in relatives of index cases, to reduce underdiagnosis and apply early preventive and therapeutic measures in those affected. Abstract

MEMS and micromotors may benefit from the increasing complexity of rotors by integrating a larger number of magnetic dipoles. In this article, a new microassembly and bonding process to integrate multiple Sm2Co17 micromagnets in a ferromagnetic core is presented. We experimentally demonstrate the feasibility of a multipolar micrometric magnetic rotor with 11 magnetic dipoles made of N35 Sm2Co17 micromagnets (length below 250 μm and thickness of 65 μm), integrated on a ferromagnetic core. We explain the micromanufacturing methods and the multistep microassembly process. The core is manufactured on ferromagnetic alloy Fe49Co49V2 and has an external diameter of 800 μm and a thickness of 200 μm. Magnetic and geometric measurements show good geometric fitting and planarity. The manufactured microrotor also shows good agreement among the magnetic measurements and the magnetic simulations which means that there is no magnetic degradation of the permanent magnet during the manufacturing and assembly process. This paper proposes a reformulation of the scenario-based two-stage unit commitment problem under uncertainty that allows finding unit-commitment plans that perform reasonably well both in expectation and for the worst case realization of the uncertainties. The proposed reformulation is based on partitioning the sample space of the uncertain factors by clustering the scenarios that approximate their probability distributions. It is, furthermore, very amenable to decomposition and parallelization using a column-and-constraint generation procedure.

Abstract

Introduction Intra-abdominal abscesses complicating Crohn's disease [CD] are a challenging situation. Their management, during hospitalisation and after resolution, is still unclear. Methods Adult patients with CD complicated with intra-abdominal abscess. who required hospitalisation, were included from the prospectively maintained ENEIDA registry from GETECCU. Initial strategy effectiveness and safety to resolve abscess was assessed. Survival analysis was performed to evaluate recurrence risk. Predictive factors associated with resolution were evaluated by multivariate regression and predictive factors associated with recurrence were assessed by Cox regression. Results In all, 520 patients from 37 Spanish hospitals were included; 322 [63%] were initially treated with antibiotics alone, 128 [26%] with percutaneous drainage, and 54 [17%] with surgical drainage. The size of the abscess was critical to the effectiveness of each treatment. In abscesses < 30 mm, the antibiotic was as effective as percutaneous or surgical drainage. However, in larger abscesses, percutaneous or surgical drainage was superior. In abscesses > 50 mm, surgery was superior to percutaneous drainage, although it was associated with a higher complication rate. After abscess resolution, luminal resection was associated with a lower 1-year abscess recurrence risk [HR 0.43, 95% CI 0.24-0.76]. However, those patients who initiated anti-TNF therapy had a similar recurrence risk whether luminal resection had been performed. Conclusions Small abscesses [<30mm] can be managed with antibiotics alone; larger ones require drainage. Percutaneous drainage will be effective and safer than surgery in many cases. After discharge, anti-TNF therapy reduces abscess recurrence risk in a similar way to bowel resection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

PurposeTo analyze the effect of germline mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 on mortality in patients with ovarian cancer up to 10 years after diagnosis.Experimental designWe used unpublished survival time data for 2,242 patients from two case-control studies and extended survival time data for 4,314 patients from previously reported studies. All participants had been screened for deleterious germline mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2. Survival time was analyzed for the combined data using Cox proportional hazard models with BRCA1 and BRCA2 as time-varying covariates. Competing risks were analyzed using Fine and Gray model.ResultsThe combined 10-year overall survival rate was 30% [95% confidence interval (CI), 28%-31%] for non-carriers, 25% (95% CI, 22%-28%) for BRCA1 carriers, and 35% (95% CI, 30%-41%) for BRCA2 carriers. The HR for BRCA1 was 0.53 at time zero and increased over time becoming greater than one at 4.8 years. For BRCA2, the HR was 0.42 at time zero and increased over time (predicted to become greater than 1 at 10.5 years). The results were similar when restricted to 3,202 patients with high-grade serous tumors and to ovarian cancer-specific mortality.ConclusionsBRCA1/2 mutations are associated with better short-term survival, but this advantage decreases over time and in BRCA1 carriers is eventually reversed. This may have important implications for therapy of both primary and relapsed disease and for analysis of long-term survival in clinical trials of new agents, particularly those that are effective in BRCA1/2 mutation carriers.

Abstract

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified 12 epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) susceptibility alleles. The pattern of association at these loci is consistent in BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers who are at high risk of EOC. After imputation to 1000 Genomes Project data, we assessed associations of 11 million genetic variants with EOC risk from 15,437 cases unselected for family history and 30,845 controls and from 15,252 BRCA1 mutation carriers and 8,211 BRCA2 mutation carriers (3,096 with ovarian cancer), and we combined the results in a meta-analysis. This new study design yielded increased statistical power, leading to the discovery of six new EOC susceptibility loci. Variants at 1p36 (nearest gene, WNT4), 4q26 (SYNPO2), 9q34.2 (ABO) and 17q11.2 (ATAD5) were associated with EOC risk, and at 1p34.3 (RSPO1) and 6p22.1 (GPX6) variants were specifically associated with the serous EOC subtype, all with P < 5 × 10(-8). Incorporating these variants into risk assessment tools will improve clinical risk predictions for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers.

Abstract

While interplay between BRCA1 and AURKA-RHAMM-TPX2-TUBG1 regulates mammary epithelial polarization, common genetic variation in HMMR (gene product RHAMM) may be associated with risk of breast cancer in BRCA1 mutation carriers. Following on these observations, we further assessed the link between the AURKA-HMMR-TPX2-TUBG1 functional module and risk of breast cancer in BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation carriers. Forty-one single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were genotyped in 15,252 BRCA1 and 8,211 BRCA2 mutation carriers and subsequently analyzed using a retrospective likelihood approach. The association of HMMR rs299290 with breast cancer risk in BRCA1 mutation carriers was confirmed: per-allele hazard ratio (HR) = 1.10, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.04-1.15, p = 1.9 x 10(-4) (false discovery rate (FDR)-adjusted p = 0.043). Variation in CSTF1, located next to AURKA, was also found to be associated with breast cancer risk in BRCA2 mutation carriers: rs2426618 per-allele HR = 1.10, 95% CI 1.03-1.16, p = 0.005 (FDR-adjusted p = 0.045). Assessment of pairwise interactions provided suggestions (FDR-adjusted pinteraction values > 0.05) for deviations from the multiplicative model for rs299290 and CSTF1 rs6064391, and rs299290 and TUBG1 rs11649877 in both BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers. Following these suggestions, the expression of HMMR and AURKA or TUBG1 in sporadic breast tumors was found to potentially interact, influencing patients survival. Together, the results of this study support the hypothesis of a causative link between altered function of AURKA-HMMR-TPX2-TUBG1 and breast carcinogenesis in BRCA1/2 mutation carriers.

Abstract

Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes involved in the DNA Base Excision Repair (BER) pathway could be associated with cancer risk in carriers of mutations in the high-penetrance susceptibility genes BRCA1 and BRCA2, given the relation of synthetic lethality that exists between one of the components of the BER pathway, PARP1 (poly ADP ribose polymerase), and both BRCA1 and BRCA2. In the present study, we have performed a comprehensive analysis of 18 genes involved in BER using a tagging SNP approach in a large series of BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers. 144 SNPs were analyzed in a two stage study involving 23,463 carriers from the CIMBA consortium (the Consortium of Investigators of Modifiers of BRCA1 and BRCA2).
