Why do men and women vote for the populist radical right? This question, which speaks to the phenomenon of the “radical right gender gap”, has been the topic of much scholarly interest. While previous studies refer to the role played by differences in political resources, attitudes, and socialization, this paper examines whether negative emotions towards the political system, and system-directed anger in particular, drive support for populist radical right parties differently for men and women. Drawing on the premise that populist radical right parties tend to appeal to angry voters, and given that acting upon anger is seen as an “agentic” trait, we expect that system-directed anger is more strongly associated with support for populist radical right parties among men compared to women. We test the hypothesis using original data from the RepResent voter survey organized in Belgium during the 2019 federal elections. In line with previous studies, we find that voters of the populist radical right party Vlaams Belang report high levels of system-directed anger. Men and women voters are similar in their display of this emotion, and contrary to our expectations, they are similar in how system-directed anger relates to vote choice as well. More than explaining gender differences in populist radical right voting, our findings confirm the idea that system-directed anger can incite women as well as men to cast a populist radical right vote.

Consociationalism promises to resolve tensions among groups in deeply divided societies by constructing shared identity that transcends ethnic divisions. Yet there is no guarantee that this will happen, and empirical studies testing this claim yield inconsistent results. We examine the extent to which political parties appeal to shared identities within a consociation, focusing on the Brussels Capital Region (BCR) in Belgium. The BCR constitutes a regional consociation aimed at addressing divisions between Dutch and French speakers. Based on a quantitative analysis of party programs, and a qualitative analysis of thirty interviews with Brussels MPs, our findings indicate that parties do indeed appeal to a common sense of belonging, often on issues that have a low ethnolinguistic salience. When addressing contentious community matters, however, we observe that Dutch-speaking parties (especially ethnic outbidders) prioritize their own linguistic group identity more than Francophone parties. River inflows have a major influence on lake water quality due to their input of sediments, nutrients and contaminants. After leaving the river channel, river waters form a plume and interact with ambient lake waters. Strong hydrodynamic changes take place in the nearfield. To determine the nearfield hydro-sedimentary dynamics of the negatively-buoyant Rhône River plume in thermally stratified Lake Geneva, field campaigns were carried out at high and intermediate river discharge. High-resolution full-depth Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) transects were taken at 400, 800, 1,200, and 1,500 m from the river mouth, combined with profiles of temperature, turbidity and particle size distribution. These measurements provided, for the first time in a lake, detailed velocity fields across the full-plume cross-section in each transect. Furthermore, the unique combination of measurement techniques allowed the quantification of entrainment, Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) concentrations and fluxes. They revealed that the negatively buoyant river inflow intruded into the metalimnion as a laterally unconfined interflow and continued flowing straight out in the streamwise direction, since currents in the lake were weak. At the same time, it mainly spread laterally due to entrainment of ambient water. The size of the interflow core and its velocity progressively decreased with distance from the mouth, as did SPM concentrations and volumes of particles (by a factor of 2–3 within 1,500 m), due to sediment settling and entrainment. The interflow momentum flux remained constant along the pathway, but interflow cross sections and discharge increased 2–3 times (within 1,500 m). The entrainment coefficient was >2 at 400 m and further increased non-linearly along the pathway. These values are much higher than those reported for laterally confined laboratory studies. The particle size distribution in the interflow was dominated by fine particles (62 μm) almost completely settled out before reaching that distance. The above processes occurred independent of river discharge; their intensity, however, changed with discharge.

Abstract Objective The appropriate use of facemasks, recommended or mandated by authorities, is critical to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the community. We aim to evaluate frequency and quality of facemask use in general populations. Methods A multi-site observational study was carried out from June to July 2020 in the west of France. An observer was positioned at a predetermined place, facing a landmark, and all individual passing between the observer and the landmark were included. The observer collected information on facemask use (type, quality of positioning), location and demographic characteristics. Results A total of 3354 observations were recorded. A facemask was worn by 56.4% (n = 1892) of individuals, including surgical facemasks (56.8%, n = 1075) and cloth masks (43.2%, n = 817). The facemask was correctly positioned in 75.2% (n = 1422) of cases. The factors independently associated with wearing a facemask were being indoors (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 2.7; 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.28–3.19), being in a mandatory area (aOR, 6.92; 95% CI 5–9.7), female gender (aOR, 1.75; 95% CI 1.54–2.04), age 41–65 years (aOR, 1.7; 95% CI 1.43–2.02) and age > 65 years (aOR, 2.28; 95% CI 1.83–2.85). The factors independently associated with correct mask position were rural location (aOR, 1.38; 95% CI 1.07–1.79), being in an indoor area (aOR, 1.85; 95% CI 1.49–2.3), use of clothmask (aOR, 1.53; 95% CI 1.23–1.91), and age > 40 years (aOR, 1.75 95%CI 1.37–2.23). Conclusions During the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, the frequency and quality of facemask wearing remained low in the community setting. Young people in general, and men in particular, represent the priority targets for information campaigns. Simplifying the rules to require universal mandatory facemasking seemed to be the best approach for health authorities.

Abstract Context In the emergency ward, where the use of ultrasound is common (including for sterile procedures), ward equipment is constantly exposed to high risks of microbiological contamination. There are no clear guidelines for disinfection control practices in emergency departments, and it is not known how emergency ward doctors follow good hygiene practices. Method A multi-centre audit was conducted in 16 emergency services from Northern France regional hospitals, in form of a questionnaire. It was proposed to all emergency ward physicians. We excluded questionnaires when physicians mentioned that they did not use ultrasound on a daily basis. The questionnaire was designed using existing hygiene and ultrasound disinfection practices guidelines from varying French medical societies. It included three different clinical scenarios: (a) ultrasound on healthy skin, (b) on injured skin, and (c) ultrasound-guided punctures. All questions were closed-ended, with only one answer corresponding to the guidelines. We then calculated compliance rates for each question, each clinical situation, and an overall compliance rate for all the questions. Results 104 questionnaires were collected, and 19 were excluded. For the 85 analysed questionnaires, the compliance rates were 60.4% 95% CI [56.4–64.7] for ultrasound on healthy skin, 70.9% 95% CI [66.3–76.1] on injured skin and 69.4% 95% CI [65.1–73.6] for ultrasound-guided punctures. The overall compliance rate for the compliance questions was 66.1% 95% CI [62.8–69.1]. Analysis of the questionnaires revealed severe asepsis errors, misuse of gel, ignorance of infection control practices to be applied in the context of ultrasound-guided puncture and exposure of the probe to body fluids. Conclusion This study details areas for quality improvement in the disinfection of emergency ultrasound scanner use. Consequently, we propose a standardized protocol based upon the recommendations used for the questionnaire drafting, with a visual focus on the low compliance points that have been revealed in this audit. This protocol has been distributed to all the medical emergency services audited and included in the emergency resident’s ultrasound learning program.

Abstract Background Few data on motivations for using new psychoactive substances (NPS) are available. However, the cost, the legal status, and their accessibility through channels like internet contributed to the popularity of NPS. The objective of this article are first to gain a deeper understanding of the culture surrounding NPS in Belgium and second to define the awareness of the users concerning the content of the NPS they are consuming. Methods Snowball sampling and partners in the drug demand reduction field were used as a gateway in order to reach a heterogeneous study population. In total, 45 users were recruited and in-depth interviews were conducted. The personal experiences of NPS users and their needs for support along the continuum of care were explored through an interview guideline, while subjects were given the opportunity to deposit a NPS sample for forensic analysis in a recognized laboratory. Results A diversity of profiles was found among NPS users but also a wide diversity in the motives to consume NPS: personal reasons such as pleasure, mind exploration, being connected to others, or out of curiosity, but also external reasons such as price, accessibility or the specific effects procured by certain NPS. The results showed as well that a majority of NPS users seem to be aware of the substances they are using. Conclusion Understanding the motivations of use is of importance to determine which type of NPS targeted interventions are adapted to different profiles of users.

Purpose: To strengthen the sparse evidence on acyclovir (ACV) resistance, especially in recalcitrant herpetic keratitis (HK), by describing the clinical course of 3 genotypically proven ACV resistant HK cases. An overview of mechanisms of resistance and therapeutic options currently available to ophthalmologists is provided based upon recent literature search. Observations: Resistance to ACV due to known mutations in the gene encoding the viral thymidine kinase was confirmed in 2 cases, and a novel mutation in the UL23 gene (N202K) conferring phenotypical resistance to ACV was discovered in 1 case. Three unique therapeutic strategies finally led to epithelial closure. Conclusions: The novel thymidine kinase mutation (N202K) should be considered to infer resistance to all molecules requiring activation by the viral thymidine kinase. Current topical alternatives in the ophthalmologist's armamentarium include trifluridine 1%, foscarnet 1,2%-1,4% or cidofovir 0,2–0,5%. Epithelial debridement, high-frequency dosing and dose reduction of immunosuppressive therapy are useful adjuncts. Importance: Clinicians should consider performing epithelial debridement in recalcitrant HK, allowing geno- and phenotypically guided therapy. This report provides mandatory knowledge allowing the reader to comprehend how therapy should be altered based upon these results. To the best of our knowledge, only 2 cases of proven ACV resistant HK treated with topical foscarnet have been published before.Furthermore, this paper highlights a lack of controlled studies investigating alternative topical treatments in case of viral resistance, offering opportunities for future research.

Dans le propos qui va suivre, nous allons développer la mise en place d’un projet pédagogique qui s’inscrit aujourd’hui dans les paysages intermédiaires aux franges de ville et interroge les processus d’aménagement du territoire en Wallonie.Le Jardin d’Expériences (JExp’) est un projet pédagogique sous la forme d’un chantier d’aménagement et d’une occupation temporaire. Il prône un apprentissage expérientiel, fruit d’une relation sensible entre l’être, le geste, la matière et l’espace qui l’entoure. Cette action peut s’apparenter à de l’urbanisme temporaire. C’est à partir de l’observation d’un terrain sur lequel un JExp’ s’est déroulé que nous évaluerons la transformation d’un espace intermédiaire à devenir un lieu propice au sauvage et au vivant. Nous ouvrirons en conclusion sur la potentielle « mise en culture du sauvage » engagée par les « trois jardins » -Individuel, collectif et territorial- du JExp’ à destination d’un territoire pilote situé en Wallonie.

The pathway of dense river inflows into lakes, which affects the lake water quality, is not accurately predicted by existing models. The pathway of a dense riverine inflow in a lake with a submerged canyon is analyzed based on measurements during a 4‐month period of weakening lake stratification and weakening density excess between river and epilimnion. In line with models, the dense riverine inflow plunges upon entering the lake, continues as an underflow on the sloping lake bottom, and finally intrudes at its level of neutral buoyancy. Underflow and interflow velocities are O(0.1 m s−1). The river inflow is finally trapped in the pycnocline most of the time, even when the river's density excess and the lake's stratification are marginal. This trapping in the pycnocline is explained by the reduction of the inflow density excess due to the intense plunging mixing, which is an order of magnitude larger than that obtained in confined laboratory flumes. The pathway of the dense riverine inflow is affected by interactions of the underflow with the lake bottom and sedimentary processes. A canyon carved by the underflows confines and accelerates the underflow, which enhances its capacity to entrain and carry sediment. The entrainment of sediment that was previously deposited on the canyon bottom accelerates the underflow. Due to both effects, the underflow can temporarily break through the pycnocline and reach the hypolimnion. Existing models explain these observations qualitatively, but a quantitative prediction would require better parameterizations of the plunging mixing and the sedimentary processes. Plain Language Summary: The pathway of river inflows into lakes is not accurately predicted by existing models. We investigate the physical processes affecting the pathway of dense riverine inflow (i.e., inflow with a density higher than lake water) into a stratified lake. We investigate the conditions under which a dense riverine inflow get trapped in the pycnocline (the layer that separates warmer surface waters from cold deep waters) or break through it. Unprecedented long records of the temporal evolution of the pathway of the riverine flow into the lake during a period of weakening riverine density excess and lake stratification are conceptualized in a model, which extends existing concepts for dense riverine inflows. The entrainment of lake waters into the riverine inflow in the plunging region is larger than predicted by laboratory studies. This explains why the riverine inflow is trapped in the pycnocline most of the time. Flow confinement by a canyon carved by the riverine inflow into the lake bottom accelerates the riverine inflow and enhance sediment entrainment capacity causing short‐lived self‐accelerating turbidity currents along the lake bottom that break through the pycnocline and reach deep waters. Our results allow improved estimates of oxygen replenishment or sediment deposition from riverine water.
