Abstract

The meeting of astrophysical plasmas and their magnetic fields creates many reconnection sites. We experimentally compare the reconnection rate of laser-driven magnetic reconnection when it takes place at a single site and multiple sites. For a single site, where the ram pressure dominates the magnetic pressure, the measured reconnection rate exceeds the well-established rate of 0.1. However, in the case of multiple close-by sites, we observed a reduction of the reconnection rate. Hybrid-PIC simulations support this observation and suggest that the distortion of the Hall field as well as the concomitant obstruction of one of the outflows are detrimental to the magnetic reconnection rate.

Abstract

Due to their high cost of acquisition and operation, there are still a limited number of high-yield, high-flux neutron source facilities worldwide. In this context, laser-driven neutron sources offer a promising, cheaper alternative to those based on large-scale accelerators, with, in addition, the potential of generating compact neutron beams of high brightness and ultra-short duration. In particular, the predicted capability of next-generation petawatt (PW)-class lasers to accelerate protons beyond the 100 MeV range should unlock efficient neutron generation through spallation reactions. In this paper, this scenario is investigated numerically through particle-in-cell and Monte Carlo simulations, modeling, respectively, the laser acceleration of protons from thin-foil targets and their subsequent conversion into neutrons in secondary heavy-ion targets. Laser parameters relevant to the 1 PW LMJ-PETAL and 1-10 PW Apollon systems are considered. Under such conditions, neutron fluxes exceeding $10^{23}\,\rm n\,cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}$ are predicted, opening up attractive fundamental and applicative prospects., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

This article reports the first measurements of high-energy photons produced with the high-intensity PETawatt Aquitaine Laser (PETAL) laser. The experiments were performed during the commissioning of the laser. The laser had an energy of about 400 J, an intensity of 8 × 1018 W cm−2, and a pulse duration of 660 fs (FWHM). It was shot at a 2 mm-thick solid tungsten target. The high-energy photons were produced mainly from the bremsstrahlung process for relativistic electrons accelerated inside a plasma generated on the front side of the target. This paper reports measurements of electrons, protons and photons. Hot electrons up to ≈35 MeV with a few-MeV temperature were recorded by a spectrometer, called SESAME (Spectre ÉlectronS Angulaire Moyenne Énergie). K- and L-shells were clearly detected by a photon spectrometer called SPECTIX (Spectromètre Petal à Cristal en TransmIssion pour le rayonnnement X). High-energy photons were diagnosed by CRACC-X (Cassette de RAdiographie Centre Chambre-rayonnement X), a bremsstrahlung cannon. Bremsstrahlung cannon analysis is strongly dependent on the hypothesis adopted for the spectral shape. Different shapes can exhibit similar reproductions of the experimental data. To eliminate dependence on the shape hypothesis and to facilitate analysis of the data, simulations of the interaction were performed. To model the mechanisms involved, a simulation chain including hydrodynamic, particle-in-cell, and Monte Carlo simulations was used. The simulations model the preplasma generated at the front of the target by the PETAL laser prepulse, the acceleration of electrons inside the plasma, the generation of MeV-range photons from these electrons, and the response of the detector impacted by the energetic photon beam. All this work enabled reproduction of the experimental data. The high-energy photons produced have a large emission angle and an exponential distribution shape. In addition to the analysis of the photon spectra, positron production was also investigated. Indeed, if high-energy photons are generated inside the solid target, some positron/electron pairs may be produced by the Bethe–Heitler process. Therefore, the positron production achievable within the PETAL laser facility was quantified. To conclude the study, the possibility of creating electron/positron pairs through the linear Breit–Wheeler process with PETAL was investigated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

By using numerical simulations and experimental campaigns on a small-scale laser facility, the concept of the focal spot imaging on harmonics of laser frequency is developed and implemented on the Laser MegaJoule (LMJ)/PETawatt Aquitaine Laser (PETAL) facility. The Two/Three ω Imaging System was activated and validated during the first 2017–2019 interaction campaigns of PETAL on the LMJ. It provides major information on focal spot characteristics on a target. Such an approach could be easily applied to any high-intensity facility in the relativistic intensity regime (>1018 W cm−2). Abstract

High-energy petawatt lasers use series of spatial filters in their amplification section. The refractive lenses employed introduce longitudinal chromatism that can spatially and temporally distort the ultrafast laser beam after focusing. To ensure optimum performances of petawatt laser facilities, these distortions need to be corrected. Several solutions using reflective, refractive, or diffractive optical components can be addressed. We give herein a review of these various possibilities with their application to the PETAL (Petawatt Aquitaine Laser at the Laser Integration Line facility) laser beamline and show that diffractive-based corrections appear to be the most promising. Abstract

High-energy petawatt lasers using the chirped-pulse amplification technique require meter-sized gratings to limit the beam fluence on the surface of the grating. An alternative, studied by many groups, is a mosaic grating consisting of smaller, coherently added gratings. We propose what we believe to be a new compression scheme consisting of beam phasing instead of grating mosaic phasing. This synthetic aperture compression scheme allows us to control the beam thanks to a unique segmented mirror equipped with three degrees of freedom. With this configuration, the beam is divided into small subapertures adapted to the classical grating size. After compression, these subapertures are coherently added before the focusing stage. Abstract

In order to extend plasma accelerators, the laser beam has to be guided inside gas or plasma over a distance of the order of the dephasing length, which is typically much larger than the diffraction length [z.sub.R] of the laser. A capillary tube can be used as a waveguide for high-intensity laser pulses over distances well in excess of [z.sub.R]. Experimental demonstration of monomode guiding over 100 [z.sub.R] of [10.sup.16] W/[cm.sup.2] pulses has been obtained in evacuated capillary tubes (45-70-[micro]m inner diameter). A drop of transmission has been observed when the intensity of the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) is high enough to ionize the capillary tube entrance. Propagation in helium gas-filled (10-40 mbar) capillary tubes has been studied at intensities up to [10.sup.16] W/[cm.sup.2]; a plasma column with on-axis density of the order of [10.sup.17] [cm.sup.-3] has been created on a length of the order of 4 cm. The use of a capillary tube for an extended accelerator is discussed for the case of linear, resonant excitation of plasma waves by laser wakefield. Index Terms--Guiding, plasma accelerator.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper we present a self-referenced interferometric single-shot measurement technique that we use to evaluate the longitudinal chromatism compensation made by a diffractive lens corrector. A diffractive lens with a delay of 1 ps is qualified for a 60 mm beam aperture. This corrector was implemented on the Alisé Nd:glass power chain. We qualify the corrector and the Alisé power chain chromatism, demonstrating the potential of this measuring principle as well as the interest of diffractive lenses to correct longitudinal chromatism of petawatt-class lasers.
