Molecular chirality is a key design property for many technologies including bioresponsive imaging, circularly polarized light detection and emission, molecular motors and switches. Imaging and manipulating the primary steps of transient chirality is therefore central for controlling numerous physical, chemical and biological properties that arise from chiral molecules in response to external stimuli. So far, the manifestation of electron-driven chiral dynamics in neutral molecules has not been demonstrated at their intrinsic timescale. Here, we use time-resolved photoelectron circular dichroism (TR-PECD) with an unprecedented instrument response function of 2.9 fs to image the dynamics of coherent electronic motion activated by prompt UV-excitation in neutral chiral molecules, disclosing its impact on the molecular chiral response. We find that electronic beatings between Rydberg states lead to periodic modulations of the chiroptical response on the few-femtosecond timescale, showing a sign inversion in less than 10 fs. Calculations including both the molecular UV-excitation and subsequent photoionization confirm this interpretation and provide further evidence that the combination of the resulting photoinduced chiral current with a circularly polarized probe pulse realizes an enantio-selective filter of molecular orientations upon photoionization, opening up a route towards enantio-selective charge-directed reactivity.

We report on the development of a high-order harmonic generation (HHG)-based ultrafast high-repetition-rate (250 kHz) monochromatic extreme ultraviolet (21.6 eV) source with polarization tunability, specifically designed for multi-modal dichroism in time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Driving HHG using an annular beam allows us to spatially separate the high-power 515 nm driving laser from the XUV beamlet while preserving the linear polarization axis angle tunability. This enables controlling the polarization state of the XUV radiation with a fixed all-reflective phase-shifter. This scheme leads to a source brightness of 5.7$\times$10$^{12}$ photons/s at 21.6 eV (up to 4$\times$10$^{11}$ photons/s on target) with ellipticities as high as 90$\%$.

After decades of supremacy of the Titanium:Sapphire technology, Ytterbium-based high-order harmonic sources are emerging as an interesting alternative for experiments requiring high flux of ultrashort extreme ultraviolet (XUV) radiation. In this article we describe a versatile experimental setup delivering XUV photons in the 10-50 eV range. The use of cascaded high-harmonic generation enables us to reach 1.8 mW of average power at 18 eV. Several spectral focusing schemes are presented, to select either a single harmonic or group of high-harmonics and thus an attosecond pulse train. In the perspective of circular dichroism experiments, we produce highly elliptical XUV radiation using resonant elliptical high-harmonic generation, and circularly polarized XUV by bichromatic bicircular high-harmonic generation. As a proof of principle experiment, we focus the XUV beam in a coincidence electron-ion imaging spectrometer, where we measure the photoelectron momentum angular distributions of xenon monomers and dimers.

Chiral light-matter interactions have been investigated for two centuries, leading to the discovery of many chiroptical processes used for discrimination of enantiomers. Whereas most chiroptical effects result from a response of bound electrons, photoionization can produce much stronger chiral signals that manifest as asymmetries in the angular distribution of the photoelectrons along the light propagation axis. Here we implement a self-referenced attosecond photoelectron interferometry to measure the temporal profile of the forward and backward electron wavepackets emitted upon photoionization of camphor by circularly polarized laser pulses. We found a delay between electrons ejected forward and backward, which depends on the ejection angle and reaches 24 attoseconds. The asymmetric temporal shape of electron wavepackets emitted through an autoionizing state further reveals the chiral character of strongly-correlated electronic dynamics.

In situ exploration of the planetary atmospheres requires the development of laboratory experiments to understand the molecular growth pathways initiated by photochemistry in the upper layers of the atmospheres. Major species and dominant reaction pathways are used to feed chemical network models that reproduce the chemical and physical processes of these complex environments. Energetic UV photons initiate very efficient chemistry by forming reactive species in the ionospheres of planets and satellites. Here we present a laboratory experiment based on a new photoreactor with an irradiation beam produced by high order harmonic generation of a near infra-red femtosecond laser. This type of EUV source is nowadays stable enough to enable long-lasting experiments during which a plethora of individual reactions can take place. Its high accessibility is such that chemical initial conditions can be systematically varied to investigate the complexity of the upper atmosphere of planets. In order to demonstrate the validity of our approach, we shone during 7 hours at 14 eV with a flux of 1010 photons sec-1 cm-2, a N2/CH4 (5%) based gas mixture defined by a 60 {\mu}m free mean-path. Such conditions are able to mimic the photochemistry of Titan N2 upper atmosphere. The reaction products reveal the formation of hydrocarbons and N-bearing species like dimethyldiazene (C2H6N2), the largest compound detected in this new photoreactor. This work represents an important step in the use of a EUV irradiated closed-cell chamber for the generation of photochemical analogues of Titan aerosols to better constrain the growth pathways of nitrogen incorporation into organic aerosols in the Titan atmosphere.

Controlling the polarization state of electromagnetic radiation enables the investigation of fundamental symmetry properties of matter through chiroptical processes. Many strategies have been developed to reveal structural or dynamical information about chiral molecules, from the microwave to the extreme ultraviolet range. Most schemes employ circularly or elliptically polarized radiation, and more sophisticated configurations involve, for instance, light pulses with time-varying polarization states. In all these schemes, the polarization state of light is always considered as constant over one optical cycle. In this study, we zoom into the optical cycle in order to resolve and control a subcyle attosecond chiroptical process. We engineer an electric field whose instantaneous chirality can be controlled within the optical cycle, by combining two phase-locked orthogonally polarized fundamental and second harmonic fields. While the composite field has zero net ellipticity, it shows an instantaneous optical chirality which can be controlled via the two-color delay. We theoretically and experimentally investigate the photoionization of chiral molecules with this controlled chiral field. We find that electrons are preferentially ejected forward or backward relative to the laser propagation direction depending on the molecular handedness, similarly to the well-established photoelectron circular dichroism process. However, since the instantaneous chirality switches sign from one half cycle to the next, electrons ionized from two consecutive half cycles of the laser show opposite forward/backward asymmetries. This chiral signal provides a unique insight into the influence of instantaneous chirality in the dynamical photoionization process. Strong field driven electric currents in condensed matter systems open new frontiers in petahertz electronics. In this regime new challenges arise as the role of the band structure and the quantum nature of electron-hole dynamics have yet to be resolved. Here we reveal the underlying attosecond dynamics that dictates the temporal evolution of carriers in multi-band solid state systems, via high harmonic generation (HHG) spectroscopy. We demonstrate that when the electron-hole relative velocity approaches zero, enhanced quantum interference leads to the appearance of spectral caustics in the HHG spectrum. Introducing the role of the dynamical joint density of states (JDOS) we identify its direct mapping into the spectrum, exhibiting singularities at the spectral caustics. By probing these singularities, we visualize the structure of multiple unpopulated high conduction bands. Our results open a new path in the control and study of attosecond quasi-particle interactions within the field dressed band structure of crystals.

Photoionization of randomly oriented chiral molecules with circularly polarized light leads to a strong forward/backward asymmetry in the photoelectron angular distribution. This chiroptical effect, referred to as Photoelectron Circular Dichroism (PECD), was shown to take place in all ionization regimes, from single photon to tunnel ionization. In the Resonance Enhanced Multiphoton Ionisation (REMPI) regime, where most of the table-top PECD experiments have been performed, understanding the role of the intermediate resonances is currently the subject of experimental and theoretical investigations. In an attempt to decouple the role of bound-bound and bound-continuum transitions in REMPI-PECD, we photoionized the (+)-limonene enantiomer using two-color laser fields in [1+1'] and [2+2'] ionization schemes, where the polarization state of each color can be controlled independently. We demonstrate that the main effect of the bound-bound transition is to break the sample isotropy by orientation-dependent photoexcitation, in agreement with recent theoretical pre- dictions. We show that the angular distribution of PECD strongly depends on the anisotropy of photoexcitation to the intermediate state, which is different for circularly and linearly polarized laser pulses. On the contrary, the helicity of the pulse that drives the bound-bound transition is shown to have a negligible effect on the PECD.

Unravelling the main initial dynamics responsible for chiral recognition is a key stepin the understanding of many biological processes. However this challenging task requires a sensitive enantiospecic probe to investigate molecular dynamics on their natural femtosecond timescale. Here we show that, in the gas phase, the ultrafast relaxationdynamics of photoexcited chiral molecules can be tracked by recording Time-ResolvedPhotoElectron Circular Dichroism (TR-PECD) resulting from the photoionisation bya circularly polarized probe pulse. A large forward/backward asymmetry along theprobe propagation axis is observed in the photoelectron angular distribution. Its evolution with pump-probe delay reveals ultrafast dynamics that are inaccessible in theangle-integrated photoelectron spectrum nor via the usual electron emission anisotropyparameter ($\beta$). PECD, which originates from the electron scattering in the chiral molecular potential, appears as a new sensitive observable for ultrafast molecular dynamicsin chiral systems.

Strong field transient grating spectroscopy has shown to be a very versatile tool in time-resolved molecular spectroscopy. Here we use this technique to investigate the high-order harmonic generation from SF6 molecules vibrationally excited by impulsive stimulated Raman scattering. Transient grating spectroscopy enables us to reveal clear modulations of the harmonic emission. This heterodyne detection shows that the harmonic emission generated between 14 to 26 eV is mainly sensitive to two among the three active Raman modes in SF6, i.e. the strongest and fully symmetric nu 1-A1g mode (774 cm-1, 43 fs) and the slowest mode nu5-T2g (524 cm-1, 63 fs). A time-frequency analysis of the harmonic emission reveals additional dynamics: the strength and central frequency of the nu 1 mode oscillate with a frequency of 52 cm-1 (640 fs). This could be a signature of the vibration of dimers in the generating medium. Harmonic 11 shows a remarkable behavior, oscillating in opposite phase, both on the fast (774 cm-1) and slow (52 cm-1) timescales, which indicates a strong modulation of the recombination matrix element as a function of the nuclear geometry. The predissociation dynamics of the vibrationless level of the first Rydberg state 6s (B 2E) state of CH3I has been studied by femtosecond-resolved velocity map imaging of both the CH3 and I photofragments. The kinetic energy distributions of the two fragments have been recorded as a function of the pump-probe delay, and as a function of excitation within the umbrella and stretching vibrational modes of the CH3 fragment. These observations are made by using (2+1) Resonant Enhanced MultiPhoton Ionization (REMPI) via the 3pz 2A2" state of CH3 to detect specific vibrational levels of CH3. The vibrational branching fractions of the CH3 are recovered by using the individual vibrationally state-selected CH3 distributions to fit the kinetic energy distribution obtained by using nonresonant multiphoton ionization of either the I or CH3 fragment. The angular distributions and rise times of the two fragments differ significantly. These observations can be rationalized through a consideration of the alignment of the CH3 fragment and the effect of this alignment on its detection efficiency. Two extra dissociation channels are detected: one associated with Rydberg states near 9.2 eV that were observed previously in photoelectron studies, and one associated with photodissociation of the parent cation around 15 eV., Comment: submitted Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics (2011)

We employ the velocity map imaging technique to measure kinetic energy and angular distributions of state selected CH3 (v2=0,1,2,3) and Br (2P3/2,2P1/2) photofragments produced by methyl bromide photolysis at 215.9 nm. These results show unambiguously that the Br and Br* forming channels result in different vibrational excitation of the umbrella mode of the methyl fragment. Low energy structured features appear on the images which arise from CH3Br+ photodissociation near 330 nm. The excess energy of the probe laser photon is channeled into CH3+ vibrational excitation, most probably in the nu_4 degenerate bend, Comment: 11 pages

We measure the photoionization cross-section of vibrationally excited levels in the S2 state of azulene by femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. At the wavelengths studied (349-265 nm in the pump) the transient signals exhibit two distinct and well-defined behaviours: (i) Short-term (on the order of a picosecond) polarization dependent transients and (ii) longer (10 ps - 1 ns) time-scale decays. This letter focuses on the short time transient. In contrast to an earlier study by Diau et al.22 [J. Chem. Phys. 110 (1999) 9785.] we unambiguously assign the fast initial decay signal to rotational dephasing of the initial alignment created by the pump transition., Comment: Chemical Physics Letters (2008)

Pump-probe photoionization has been used to map the relaxation processes taking place from highly vibrationally excited levels of the S2 state of azulene, populated directly or via internal conversion from the S4 state. Photoelectron spectra obtained by 1+2[prime] two-color time-resolved photoelectron imaging are invariant (apart from in intensity) to the pump-probe time delay and to the pump wavelength. This reveals a photoionization process which is driven by an unstable electronic state (e.g., doubly excited state) lying below the ionization potential. This state is postulated to be populated by a probe transition from S2 and to rapidly relax via an Auger-like process onto highly vibrationally excited Rydberg states. This accounts for the time invariance of the photoelectron spectrum. The intensity of the photoelectron spectrum is proportional to the population in S2. An exponential energy gap law is used to describe the internal conversion rate from S2 to S0. The vibronic coupling strength is found to be larger than 60$\pm$5 $\mu$eV.

The effects of Coherent excitation of a two level system with a linearly chirped pulse are studied theoretically and experimentally (in Rb (5s - 5p)) in the low field regime. The Coherent Transients are measured directly on the excited state population on an ultrashort time scale. A sharp step corresponds to the passage through resonance. It is followed by oscillations resulting from interferences between off-resonant and resonant contributions.
