It is often simply assumed that social workers experience job satisfaction because it is assumed that people who choose this profession do so for altruistic reasons (King & Botha 1997:107). The consequence of the lack of job satisfaction among social workers is poor quality of work and this in turn has a negative impact on their physical health, mental health and social functioning (Vinokur-Kaplan, Jayarentne & Chess, 1994:95).

Abstract

Abstract Dedifferentiated and Well-differentiated liposarcoma are characterized by a systematic amplification of the Murine Double Minute 2 (MDM2) oncogene. We demonstrate that p53-independent metabolic functions of chromatin-bound MDM2 are exacerbated in liposarcoma and mediate an addiction to serine metabolism to sustain tumor growth. However, the origin of exogenous serine remains unclear. Here, we show that elevated serine levels in mice harboring liposarcoma-patient derived xenograft, released by distant muscle is essential for liposarcoma cell survival. Repressing interleukine-6 expression, or treating liposarcoma cells with Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) approved anti-interleukine-6 monoclonal antibody, decreases de novo serine synthesis in muscle, impairs proliferation, and increases cell death in vitro and in vivo. This work reveals a metabolic crosstalk between muscle and liposarcoma tumor and identifies anti-interleukine-6 as a plausible treatment for liposarcoma patients.

Abstract

Seventy five percent of the world's food crops benefit from insect pollination. Hence, there has been increased interest in how global change drivers impact this critical ecosystem service. Because standardized data on crop pollination are rarely available, we are limited in our capacity to understand the variation in pollination benefits to crop yield, as well as to anticipate changes in this service, develop predictions, and inform management actions. Here, we present CropPol, a dynamic, open, and global database on crop pollination. It contains measurements recorded from 202 crop studies, covering 3,394 field observations, 2,552 yield measurements (i.e., berry mass, number of fruits, and fruit density [kg/ha], among others), and 47,752 insect records from 48 commercial crops distributed around the globe. CropPol comprises 32 of the 87 leading global crops and commodities that are pollinator dependent. Malus domestica is the most represented crop (32 studies), followed by Brassica napus (22 studies), Vaccinium corymbosum (13 studies), and Citrullus lanatus (12 studies). The most abundant pollinator guilds recorded are honey bees (34.22% counts), bumblebees (19.19%), flies other than Syrphidae and Bombyliidae (13.18%), other wild bees (13.13%), beetles (10.97%), Syrphidae (4.87%), and Bombyliidae (0.05%). Locations comprise 34 countries distributed among Europe (76 studies), North America (60), Latin America and the Caribbean (29), Asia (20), Oceania (10), and Africa (7). Sampling spans three decades and is concentrated on 2001-2005 (21 studies), 2006-2010 (40), 2011-2015 (88), and 2016-2020 (50). This is the most comprehensive open global data set on measurements of crop flower visitors, crop pollinators and pollination to date, and we encourage researchers to add more datasets to this database in the future. The remarkable and improbable story of the utopian single-tax social experiment that gave rise to one of the most unique and colorful communities along the Gulf Coast On November 15, 1894, a small group of men and women met on a remote stretch of Mobile Bay's eastern shore to establish a colony. It was a decidedly utopian undertaking in a period characterized by many similar social experiments and ideal communities, most of them failures. This group, which gathered at “Stapleton's pasture” to found Fairhope, hoped to demonstrate the benefits of the single tax as a means of curing social and economic evils, making a practical test of the doctrines of economist Henry George. Today, the wealth of parks, public and private schools, art galleries, and restaurants, combined with quaint shops and residential areas and a vibrant nautical life, all attest to Fairhope's unique position among many older communities in the same region. Its residents represent a diverse array of interests and talents, and with a strong civic regard for individualism and creativity, Fairhope is also a haven for painters, potters, writers, and musicians. Paul E. and Blanche R. Alyea's Fairhope, 1894–1954, first published in 1954, is the history of this unique and improbable community and the single-tax social experiment that gave rise to it. This new edition offers an introduction by historian and Fairhope resident Tennant McWilliams, giving invaluable context and entertaining anecdotes not just regarding Fairhope's founding but about the Alyeas themselves—all to the abiding value of their story for today's residents and visitors.

Abstract

Abstract Landslide risk analysis is a common geotechnical evaluation and it aims to protect life and infrastructure. In the case of sensitive clay zones, landslides can affect large areas and are difficult to predict. Here we propose a methodology to determine the landslide hazard across a large territory, and we apply our approach to the Saint-Jean-Vianney area, Quebec, Canada. The initial step consists of creating a 3D model of the surficial deposits of the target area. After creating a chart of the material electrical resistivity adapted for eastern Canada, we applied electric induction to interpret the regional soil. We transposed parameter values obtained from the laboratory to a larger scale, that is to a regional slope using the results of a back analysis undertaken earlier, on a smaller slide within the same area. The regional 3D model of deposits is then used to develop a zonation map of slopes that are at risk and their respective constraint areas with the study region. This approach allowed us to target specific areas where a more precise stability analysis would be required. Our methodology offers an effective tool for stability analysis in territories characterized by the presence of sensitive clays.

Abstract

Less than 1 percent of all math, science, and engineering baccalaureate and graduate degrees at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks (UAF), are awarded to Alaska Native students. Academic preparation, lack of exposure to science careers in rural Alaska, and little connection between western science and Native traditional life have combined to impede Native students' interest and progress in math and science education. The goal of this project was to develop and deliver, both on-site and through distance learning, a comprehensive program of developmental and college preparatory math and science courses at minority institutions throughout the State of Alaska. The program developed and launched an integrated preparatory cohort of math and science courses at five geographically isolated Alaska Native Minority Institutions with campuses in Kotzebue, Nome, Bethel, Dillingham, and Sitka that allowed for successful articulation to baccalaureate and post-baccalaureate study in both the math and science fields. The UAF formed the Rural Alaska Science and Mathematics Network (RASMN). RASMN hired faculty to deliver courses locally from the remote campuses throughout rural Alaska. Faculty mentored and tutored students taking college courses in the College of Rural Alaska and at the University of Alaska Southeast Sitka Campus. The presence of qualified math and science faculty at these remote locations positively benefited colleagues, students, and the communities. Using an inclusive approach, RASMN reached out to young students in the 18-to-25 year-old age group by advising, recruiting, and supporting them in studying math and science subjects and in enrolling in related certificate and degree programs. Most of these young people were first-generation college students. The faculty taught mathematics and science courses to approximately 100 students each academic year during the 5-year RASMN project.

Abstract

Sensitive clays are known for producing retrogressive landslides, also called spread or flowslides. The key characteristics associated with the occurrence of these landslides on a sensitive clay slope must be assessed, and the potential retrogressive distance must be evaluated. Common risk analysis methods include empirical methods for estimating the distance of potential retrogression, analytical limit equilibrium methods, numerical modelling methods using the strength reduction technique, and the integration of a progressive failure mechanism into numerical methods. Methods developed for zoning purposes in Norway and Quebec provide conservative results in most cases, even if they don’t cover the worst cases scenario. A flowslide can be partially analysed using analytical limit equilibrium methods and numerical methods having strength reduction factor tools. Numerical modelling of progressive failure mechanisms using numerical methods can define the critical parameters of spread-type landslides, such as critical unloading and the retrogression distance of the failure. Continuous improvements to the large-deformation numerical modeling approach allow its application to all types of sensitive clay landslides.
