The determination of the full population of Resident Space Objects (RSOs) in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) is a key issue in the field of space situational awareness that will only increase in importance in the coming years. We endeavour to describe a novel method of inferring the population of RSOs as a function of orbital height and inclination for a range of magnitudes. The method described uses observations of an orbit of known height and inclination to detect RSOs on neighbouring orbits. These neighbouring orbit targets move slowly relative to our tracked orbit, and are thus detectable down to faint magnitudes. We conduct simulations to show that, by observing multiple passes of a known orbit, we can infer the population of RSOs within a defined region of orbital parameter space. Observing a range of orbits from different orbital sites will allow for the inference of a population of LEO RSOs as a function of their orbital parameters and object magnitude., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures. We use an infrared dataset captured between 1984 and 2017 using several instruments and observatories to report five rare equatorial disturbances that completely altered the appearance of Jupiter's Equatorial Zone (EZ): the clearance of tropospheric clouds revealed a new 5-$\mu$m-bright band encircling the planet at the equator, accompanied by large 5-$\mu$m-bright filaments. Three events were observed in ground-based images in 1973, 1979 and 1992. We report and characterize for the first time the entire evolution of two new episodes of this unusual EZ state that presented their maximum 5-$\mu$m-brightness in December 1999 and February 2007, coinciding with a brown coloration south of the equator and with large bluish filaments and white plumes in the northern EZ at visible wavelengths. We characterize their typical infrared-bright lifetimes of 12-18 months, with possible periodicities of 6-8 or 13-14 years. We predict that a full-scale equatorial disturbance could occur in 2019-21.

We present the methodology and results of a simulation to determine the recoverability of LEO objects using a blind stacking technique. The method utilises sCMOS and GPU technology to inject and recover LEO objects in real observed data. We explore the target recovery fraction and pipeline run-time as a function of three optimisation parameters; number of frames per data-set, exposure time, and binning factor. Results are presented as a function of magnitude and velocity. We find that target recovery using blind stacking is significantly more complete, and can reach fainter magnitudes, than using individual frames alone. We present results showing that, depending on the combination of optimisation parameters, recovery fraction is up to 90% of detectable targets for magnitudes up to 13.5, and then falls off steadily up to a magnitude limit around 14.5. Run-time is shown to be a few multiples of the observing time for the best combinations of optimisation parameters, approaching real-time processing., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures. We construct a Leray-Serre spectral sequence for fibrations for de Rham cohomology on noncommutative algebras. The fibrations are bimodules with zero-curvature extendable bimodule connections satisfying an additional condition. By the KSGNS construction, completely positive maps between C*-algebras correspond to Hilbert C*-bimodules. We give examples of fibrations on group algebras and matrix algebras.

A multi-decade record of ground-based mid-infrared (7-25 $\mu$m) images of Saturn is used to explore seasonal and non-seasonal variability in thermal emission over more than a Saturnian year (1984-2022). Thermal emission measured by 3-m and 8-m-class observatories compares favourably with synthetic images based on both Cassini-derived temperature records and the predictions of radiative climate models. 8-m class facilities are capable of resolving thermal contrasts on the scale of Saturn's belts, zones, polar hexagon, and polar cyclones, superimposed onto large-scale seasonal asymmetries. Seasonal changes in brightness temperatures of $\sim30$ K in the stratosphere and $\sim10$ K in the upper troposphere are observed, as the northern and southern polar stratospheric vortices (NPSV and SPSV) form in spring and dissipate in autumn. The timings of the first appearance of the warm polar vortices is successfully reproduced by radiative climate models, confirming them to be radiative phenomena, albeit entrained within sharp boundaries influenced by dynamics. Axisymmetric thermal bands (4-5 per hemisphere) display temperature gradients that are strongly correlated with Saturn's zonal winds, indicating winds that decay in strength with altitude, and implying meridional circulation cells forming the system of cool zones and warm belts. Saturn's thermal structure is largely repeatable from year to year (via comparison of infrared images in 1989 and 2018), with the exception of low-latitudes. Here we find evidence of inter-annual variations because the equatorial banding at 7.9 $\mu$m is inconsistent with a $\sim15$-year period for Saturn's equatorial stratospheric oscillation, i.e., it is not strictly semi-annual. Finally, observations between 2017-2022 extend the legacy of the Cassini mission, revealing the continued warming of the NPSV during northern summer. October 1957, and the successful launch of Sputnik 1 into Earth orbit, marked the dawn of the Space Age. The first of the 'fellow travellers' - humanity's first artificial satellite - orbited for a mere three months before re-entering the Earth's atmosphere, though its mission paved the way for an era of exploration that has endured to the present day. For many, a world without satellites would be a difficult one to imagine. As a society, we have become reliant on them for a vast array of services and applications. With a divine view of large swathes of the Earth's surface, and the ability to relay signals around its curvature, satellites have enabled the fast transfer of data on a global scale, bypassing the challenges associated with ground-based broadcasting, long-distance wiring, and so on. Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) satellites have revolutionised transportation by land, air, and sea, while weather satellites enable scientists to monitor and warn of large-scale phenomena as they develop in near real-time. Satellites have extended the frontiers of observation: looking outwards, astronomers are able to circumvent the Earth's atmosphere to look deeper into the cosmos than ever before; looking inwards, patterns and processes that feed into general circulation models can be monitored on a range of timescales, improving our understanding of climate change. Satellites, and the services they provide, are not going to disappear any time soon. That said, threats to satellite safety do exist, and it is important that they be addressed as soon as possible to avoid long-lasting damage to operations in the space domain. The abundance of deuterium in giant planet atmospheres provides constraints on the reservoirs of ices incorporated into these worlds during their formation and evolution. Motivated by discrepancies in the measured deuterium-hydrogen ratio (D/H) on Jupiter and Saturn, we present a new measurement of the D/H ratio in methane for Saturn from ground-based measurements. We analysed a spectral cube (covering 1151-1160 cm$^{-1}$ from 6 February 2013) from the Texas Echelon Cross Echelle Spectrograph (TEXES) on NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) where emission lines from both methane and deuterated methane are well resolved. Our estimate of the D/H ratio in stratospheric methane, $1.65_{-0.21}^{+0.27} \times 10^{-5}$ is in agreement with results derived from Cassini CIRS and ISO/SWS observations, confirming the unexpectedly low CH$_{3}$D abundance. Assuming a fractionation factor of $1.34 \pm 0.19$ we derive a hydrogen D/H of $1.23_{-0.23}^{+0.27} \times 10^{-5}$. This value remains lower than previous tropospheric hydrogen D/H measurements of (i) Saturn $2.10 (\pm 0.13) \times 10^{-5}$, (ii) Jupiter $2.6 (\pm 0.7) \times 10^{-5}$ and (iii) the proto-solar hydrogen D/H of $2.1 (\pm 0.5) \times 10^{-5}$, suggesting that the fractionation factor may not be appropriate for stratospheric methane, or that the D/H ratio in Saturn's stratosphere is not representative of the bulk of the planet., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

Recent anomalies exhibited by satellites and rocket bodies have highlighted that a population of faint debris exists at geosynchronous (GEO) altitudes, where there are no natural removal mechanisms. Despite previous optical surveys probing to around 10-20 cm in size, regular monitoring of faint sources at GEO is challenging, thus our knowledge remains sparse. It is essential that we continue to explore the faint debris population using large telescopes to better understand the risk posed to active GEO satellites. To this end, we present photometric results from a survey of the GEO region carried out with the 2.54 m Isaac Newton Telescope in La Palma, Canary Islands. We probe to 21st visual magnitude (around 10 cm, assuming Lambertian spheres with an albedo of 0.1), uncovering 129 orbital tracks with GEO-like motion across the eight nights of dark-grey time comprising the survey. The faint end of our brightness distribution continues to rise until the sensitivity limit of the sensor is reached, suggesting that the modal brightness could be even fainter. We uncover a number of faint, uncatalogued objects that show photometric signatures of rapid tumbling, many of which straddle the limiting magnitude of our survey over the course of a single exposure, posing a complex issue when estimating object size. We report the discovery of two transiting exoplanets from the WASP survey, WASP-150b and WASP-176b. WASP-150b is an eccentric ($e$ = 0.38) hot Jupiter on a 5.6 day orbit around a $V$ = 12.03, F8 main-sequence host. The host star has a mass and radius of 1.4 $\rm M_{\odot}$ and 1.7 $\rm R_{\odot}$ respectively. WASP-150b has a mass and radius of 8.5 $\rm M_J$ and 1.1 $\rm R_J$, leading to a large planetary bulk density of 6.4 $\rm \rho_J$. WASP-150b is found to be $\sim3$ Gyr old, well below its circularisation timescale, supporting the eccentric nature of the planet. WASP-176b is a hot Jupiter planet on a 3.9 day orbit around a $V$ = 12.01, F9 sub-giant host. The host star has a mass and radius of 1.3 $\rm M_{\odot}$ and 1.9 $\rm R_{\odot}$. WASP-176b has a mass and radius of 0.86 $\rm M_J$ and 1.5 $\rm R_J$ respectively, leading to a planetary bulk density of 0.23 $\rm \rho_J$., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures. Weather routing methods are essential for planning routes for commercial shipping and recreational craft. This paper provides a methodology for quantifying the significance of numerical error and performance model uncertainty on the predictions returned from a weather routing algorithm. The numerical error of the routing algorithm is estimated by solving the optimum path over different discretizations of the environment. The uncertainty associated with the performance model is linearly varied in order to quantify its significance. The methodology is applied to a sailing craft routing problem: the prediction of the voyaging time for an ethnographic voyaging canoe across long distance voyages in Polynesia. We find that the average numerical error is $0.396\%$, corresponding to $1.05$ hours for an average voyage length of $266.40$ hours. An uncertainty level of $2.5 \%$ in the performance model is seen to correspond to a standard deviation of $\pm 2.41-3.08\%$ of the voyaging time. These results illustrate the significance of considering the influence of numerical error and performance uncertainty when performing a weather routing study.

As discoveries of multiple planets in the habitable zone of their parent star mount, developing analytical techniques to quantify extrasolar intra-system panspermia will become increasingly important. Here, we provide user-friendly prescriptions that describe the asteroid impact characteristics which would be necessary to transport life both inwards and outwards within these systems within a single framework. Our focus is on projectile generation and delivery and our expressions are algebraic, eliminating the need for the solution of differential equations. As an exoplanet orbits its host star it reflects and emits light, forming a distinctive phase curve. By observing this light, we can study the atmosphere and surface of distant planets. The planets in our Solar System show a wide range of atmospheric phenomena, with stable wind patterns, changing storms, and evolving anomalies. Brown dwarfs also exhibit atmospheric variability. Such temporal variability in the atmosphere of a giant exoplanet has not to date been observed. HAT-P-7 b is an exoplanet with a known offset in the peak of its phase curve. Here we present variations in the peak offset ranging between -0.086+0.033-0.033 to 0.143+0.040-0.037 in phase, implying that the peak brightness repeatedly shifts from one side of the planet's substellar point to the other. The variability occurs on a timescale of tens to hundreds of days. These shifts in brightness are indicative of variability in the planet's atmosphere, and result from a changing balance of thermal emission and reflected flux from the planet's dayside. We suggest that variation in wind speed in the planetary atmosphere, leading to variable cloud coverage on the dayside and a changing energy balance, is capable of explaining the observed variation., Comment: Published in Nature Astronomy. 24 pages, including Supplementary Information. We present an analysis of recent high spatial and spectral resolution ground-based infrared observations of H3+ spectra obtained with the 10-metre Keck II telescope in April 2011. We observed H3+ emission from Saturn's northern and southern auroral regions, simultaneously, over the course of more than two hours, obtaining spectral images along the central meridian as Saturn rotates. Previous ground-based work has derived only an average temperature of an individual polar region, summing an entire night of observations. Here we analyse 20 H3+ spectra, 10 for each hemisphere, providing H3+ temperature, column density and total emission in both the northern and southern polar regions simultaneously, improving on past results in temporal cadence and simultaneity. We find that: 1) the average thermospheric temperatures are 527+/-18 K in northern Spring and 583+/-13 K in southern Autumn, respectively; 2) this asymmetry in temperature is likely to be the result of an inversely proportional relationship between the total thermospheric heating rate (Joule heating and ion drag) and magnetic field strength - i.e. the larger northern field strength leads to reduced total heating rate and a reduced temperature, irrespective of season, and 3) this implies that thermospheric heating and temperatures are relatively insensitive to seasonal effects., Comment: 31 pages (single column), 4 figures, 1 table.
