Abstract

Lockdowns imposed in most of the countries were lifted following a decline in the COVID-19 cases towards May-June 2020. A recent surge (second wave) in the COVID-19 cases in Europe and other temperate countries as compared to the tropical regions suggests the likely role of solar radiation. We hypothesized that ultraviolet radiation's effect might be a significant factor moderating the spread of the COVID-19 across countries. Regression analysis was done for the UV radiation data for seven hotspot cities (New Delhi, Mumbai, Milan, Madrid, New York, Melbourne and Sydney) with the daily COVID-19 cases. Global erythemal UV radiation values were lower during winter and higher during summer. In general, the daily new COVID-19 cases registered were higher during the winter months having low UV radiation dose (0.5-3.7 kJ m-2). Cases began to decline with summer onset that corresponded to increased UV radiation (2.5-6.7 kJ m-2). Our studies suggest that the natural UV radiation could be a strong determining factor moderating the spread of COVID-19 cases. The importance of UV radiation in natural sunlight as a disinfectant for SARS-CoV-2 cannot be ignored since the lockdowns were lifted; further, it can be considered as a factor for COVID management., Comment: 17 PAGES

Abstract

Although CMML since long has been separated from MDS, many studies continue to evaluate the outcomes of both diseases after hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) together. Data evaluating outcomes of a large CMML cohort after allo-HCT compared to MDS are limited. We aim to compare outcomes of CMML to MDS patients who underwent allo-HCT between 2010 and 2018. Patients ≥18 years with CMML and MDS undergoing allo-HCT reported to the EBMT registry were analyzed. Progression to AML before allo-HCT was an exclusion criterion. Overall survival (OS), progression/relapse-free survival (PFS), relapse incidence (including progression) (REL), and non-relapse mortality (NRM) were evaluated in univariable and multivariable (MVA) Cox proportional hazard models including interaction terms between disease and confounders. In total, 10832 patients who underwent allo-HCT were included in the study, there were a total of 1466 CMML, and 9366 MDS. The median age at time of allo-HCT in CMML (median 60.5, IQR 54.3–65.2 years) was significantly higher than in the MDS cohort (median 58.8, IQR 50.2–64.5 years; p < .001). A significantly higher percentage of CMML patients were male (69.4%) compared to MDS (61.2%; p < .001). There were no clinically meaningful differences in the distribution of Karnofsky score, Sorror HCT-CI score at allo-HCT, and donor type, between the CMML and MDS patients. RIC platforms were utilized in 63.9% of CMML allo-HCT, and in 61.4% of MDS patients (p = .08). In univariable analyses, we found that OS, PFS, and REL were significantly worse in CMML when compared with MDS (all p < .0001), whereas no significant difference was observed in NRM (p = .77). In multivariable analyses, the HR comparing MDS versus CMML for OS was 0.81 (95% CI, 0.74–0.88, p < .001), PFS 0.76 (95% CI 0.70–0.82, p < .001), relapse 0.66 (95% CI 0.59–0.74, p < .001), and NRM 0.87 (95% CI 0.78–0.98, p = .02), respectively. Abstract

In the field of economics, work is typically considered a form of barter for wages. This perspective reduces work to a mere activity serving profit, productivity, and, ultimately, the economy. Such a reduction also diminishes the person performing the work, treating them merely as a "cog in a machine." To fully appreciate its true meaning, work must be seen as labor serving temporal goods and as a pathway to contemplation. This paper argues that personalist economics is necessary to achieve contemplative labor, affirming the totality of the person--as composed of both body and soul--involved in work and economic activity. Consequently, both the person and their work are irreducible to mere profit, productivity, and economic activity. Abstract

Conservation agriculture (CA) including reduced or no-tillage and crop residue retention, is known to be a self-sustainable system as well as an alternative to residue burning. The present study evaluated the effect of reduced tillage coupled with residue retention under different cropping systems on soil properties and crop yields in a Vertisol of a semiarid region of central India. Two tillage systems--conventional tillage (CT) with residue removed, and reduced tillage (RT) with residue retained--and six major cropping systems of this region were examined after 3 years of experimentation. Results demonstrated that soil moisture content, mean weight diameter, percent water stable aggregates (>0.25 mm) for the 0-15 cm soil layer were significantly (P moderately labile > less labile. At the 0-15 cm depth, the contributions of moderately labile, less labile and non-labile C fractions to total organic C were 39.3%, 10.3% and 50.4% respectively in RT and corresponding values for CT were 38.9%, 11.7% and 49.4%. Significant differences in different C fractions were observed between RT and CT. Soil microbial biomass C concentration was significantly higher in RT than CT at 0-15cm depth. Abstract

Crime statistics have played a pivotal role in gauging the frequency of criminal incidents relative to the population size. The escalation of crime rates has historically exerted detrimental impacts on the overall quality of life, precipitating adverse effects on individuals' societal and economic well-being. This study aimed to comprehensively identify the spectrum of committed crimes, ascertain the most prevalent categories of offenses annually, and outline strategic measures for mitigating the crime rate within the locale of Bangar, La Union. Employing a quantitative descriptive methodology, this investigation involved an exhaustive analysis of crime-related documents procured from the Bangar PNP. A hierarchical ranking of documented crimes was established through the application of frequencies and percentages. This systematic examination revealed that crimes such as physical injuries, theft, malicious mischief, reckless imprudence resulting in physical injuries, and violations of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 consistently emerged as frequently encountered criminal occurrences in Bangar, La Union. During the period spanning from 2016 to 2019, the prevailing criminal incidents predominantly centered around cases of reckless imprudence leading to physical injuries. In contrast, in 2020, violations of anti-gambling laws took precedence. The genesis of criminal behavior can be attributed mainly to adverse economic circumstances, deteriorating social conditions, and familial challenges. This study underscored that the observed decline in criminal activities can be attributed to contextual factors and the effective implementation of policy interventions. The multifaceted strategies contributing to this decline encompassed situational factors and systematic policy adjustments. Abstract

The association between graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) occurrence and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) relapse in patients treated with HLA-haploidentical allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (Haplo-HCT) with post-transplant cyclophosphamide (PTCy)-based GVHD prophylaxis has remained debated. Here, we addressed this issue in patients with active AML at transplantation. 2-year cumulative incidences of relapse and leukemia-free survival (LFS) were 49% and 32.3%, respectively. There were no associations between acute nor chronic GVHD of any grade and lower relapse incidence. However, grade I acute GVHD was associated with better LFS (HR = 0.71, 95% CI 0.51–0.99, P = 0.04). In contrast, grade III–IV acute (HR = 3.09, 95% CI 1.87–5.12, P < 0.0001) as well as extensive chronic (HR = 3.3, 95% CI 1.81–6.04, P = 0.0001) GVHD correlated with higher nonrelapse mortality leading to lower LFS (HR = 1.36, 95% CI 0.99–1.86, P = 0.056 and HR = 1.97, 95% CI 1.35–2.89, P = 0.0004, respectively). In conclusion, these data suggest a dissociation of graft-versus-leukemia effects from GVHD in patients with active AML treated with PTCy-based Haplo-HCT.

Abstract

We conducted a registry analysis including adult acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients in remission who had received thiotepa, busulfan, and fludarabine (TBF) or treosulfan-based (Treo) conditioning for haplo-hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) with posttransplant cyclophosphamide (PTCy) between 2010 and 2020. A total of 1123 patients met the inclusion criteria (968 received TBF and 155 received Treo). A 1:1 matched-pair analysis was performed on 142 TBF and 142 Treo patients. In the Treo group, 68% of patients received treosulfan at a dose ≥36 g/m2 and 54% of patients received a second alkylator (thiotepa or melphalan). We observed a trend toward increased incidence of grade II-IV acute (a) graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) at 180 days in the TBF group compared with Treo (29% versus 20%; P = 0.08), while incidence of grade III-IV aGVHD was not statistically different. Similarly, the incidence of chronic (c) GVHD was not statistically different in the 2 groups. Incidence of nonrelapse mortality at 2 years was 19% in TBF and 14% in Treo (P = 0.4). Relapse incidence at 2 years was not statistically different in the 2 groups (16% and 18% in TBF and Treo, respectively; P = 0.9). Leukemia-free survival, overall survival, and GVHD-free, relapse-free survival was 65% versus 68% (P = 0.6), 73% versus 76% (P = 0.5), and 54% versus 53% (P = 0.8) in TBF versus Treo, respectively. In conclusion, we did not find a significant difference between the 2 conditioning in the present study; Treo and TBF represent 2 valid alternative regimens for haplo-HSCT with PTCy for AML in remission.

44. Low Gossypol Containing Cottonseed: Not only a Fibre but also a Food Crop

Abstract

We achieved self-sufficiency in food grains but are still deficient in pulses and oilseeds production. Cottonseed is a good source of quality oil and is rich in protein. But the presence of gossypol in the seed makes it toxic for human consumption. Therefore, low gossypol cultivars were developed either through genetic modification or screening and conventional breeding techniques. Texas A&M University patented the genetically modified ultra-low gossypol (< 450 mg kg−1) cultivar—TAM66274. Our breeders developed cultivars with gossypol content as low as 1100 mg kg−1using conventional breeding techniques. Cottonseed meal, after oil extraction, can be used as a protein supplement similar to soybean. Cotton breeders need to screen the available germplasm and cultivars for low gossypol as well as high oil and fibre productivity. Thus, developing low and ultra-low gossypol cultivars will be a boon to our country.
