Gustav August Vichodil was one of the most prominent Croatian agronomists at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. He was born in today's Czech Republic. Apart from his native country, he studied in Germany and Hungary, and before coming to Croatia, he worked in Hungary, Austria and the Czech Republic. He came to Croatia in September 1874 at the invitation of the Provincial Government in Zagreb to take over the position of the secretary of the Croatian-Slavonian Economic Society. Since he proved to be an excellent agricultural expert, in 1878, he was appointed head of the Royal Agriculture and Forestry College in Križevci. Unfortunately, he retired in 1890 due to a severe illness. However, after recovering, he went back to work and wrote numerous articles on agriculture, which he published in Croatian and Austrian publications. In his early works, Vichodil mostly dealt with agricultural economics, which is why he is considered to be the founder of that branch of science in Croatia. Later, he paid a lot of attention to pig farming, as well as to the organisation of agricultural education in Croatia. He was also one of the first authors to write about the cultivation of roses. Due to his contribution to the development of agronomy in Croatia, shortly before his death, he was awarded the first honorary doctorate in agricultural sciences at the University of Zagreb. The Croatian Falcon Society in Križevci was founded at the end of 1904 as one of the many falcon societies in the territory of today's Croatia. By the outbreak of World War I, the Society had developed substantial activities in sports and education: it organised public group exercises, lectures, and literacy courses. It was banned during World War I, but immediately upon its conclusion, the Society was restored. As part of the political and state changes that took place upon the conclusion of World War I, the Croatian Falcon Society in Križevci operated within the Falcon Federation of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, i.e. within the Yugoslavian Falcon Federation, for three years, specifically from 1919 to 1922. Afterwards, the Society once again became a part of the Croatian Falcon Federation. Continuing the pre-war tradition, the Falcons from Križevci stood out in sports, but also in culture, education, and music. The peak of their operations transpired during the 1920s when the Society counted more than 300 members. The number later dropped, but the Society was nonetheless active. For example, in 1929, its 25th anniversary was marked by a public group exercise organised by the Preradović Parish, to which it belonged since the founding. The Croatian Falcon Society in Križevci ceased to operate at the end of 1929, when, due to political changes in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, falcon societies bearing the Croatian name began to be abolished. Baltazar Alapić was a descendant of a lower rank Hungarian noble family which moved to Slavonia in the middle of the 15th century. Neither the identity of his parents, nor the date of his birth is clear. He became a citizen of Zagreb in his youth, but soon started pursuing a career in the military. He was the commander of many fortresses in Slavonia (Medvedgrad, Rakovec, Varaždin, Krupa, Japra, Božjakovina, Veliki Kalnik), while his estates were located in the Zagreb and Križevci Counties. He held the position of viceban of Slavonia on three occasions in a span of ten years from 1497 to 1516, later serving as ban of Jajce from 1511 to 1513. He fathered at least six children from three marriages, the most famous of them being Ivan Alapić, the father of the later Slavonian Ban Gašpar Alapić. His most important estate was Veliki Kalnik, which is why he and his successors bear the surname Alapić of Veliki Kalnik. He was buried in the Church of Saint Brice in Brezovica (present- day Kalnik), which was renovated in late Gothic style a few years after his death due to the seat of the Parish of Kalnik moving from the Church of Saint Martin in Igrišće to the mentioned church. The rebellion in the Sub-Kalnik area was just one of a string of rebellions which swept over Croatia during 1903 aimed at overthrowing the governance system established under the reign of civil governor Khuen Hedervary and which endured for twenty years. The short lived rebellion luckily ended without casualties, but it did result in substantial material damage because the insurgents pillaged and looted their neighbours whom they believed to be supporters of the Union party (pejoratively called mađaroni). A landowner from Bogačevo, šadnor Fondorczy, and some more affluent peasants felt the ire of the insurgents the most. After the rebellion was suppressed 263 insurgents were indicted, even though the number of insurgents from 28 villages of the Sub-Kalnik area was significantly higher. 152 of them were sentenced to jail, while the rest of the insurgents were acquitted.
