The aim of this paper is to experimentally and analytically study the solutocapillary flow induced in a waterbody due to the presence of a solute source on its surface and the mixing induced by this flow of the solutes and gases dissolved at and near the surface into the waterbody. According to the analytic solution, the induced flow is analogous to a doublet flow in the sense that the flow is directed towards the source within a conical region with its vertex at the source, and outside the conical region the flow moves away from the source. The half cone angle for a negative source increases from $\sim$60 degrees with increasing source strength and Schmidt number reaching values greater than 80 degrees. When the cone angle is large, the outflow is restricted to a thin annular boundary layer region. These analytic results are in agreement with our experimental data obtained by the PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) and PLIF (planar laser-induced fluorescence) techniques. As the solute gradient at the surface gives rise to the force that drives the flow, when the solute diffusion coefficient is reduced the flow becomes stronger and persists longer because the solute gradient is maintained for a longer time and distance. In experiments, the flow changes direction into the waterbody and the surface flow stops when the solute induced surface tension gradient driving the flow becomes comparable to the surface tension gradients that exist on the surface due to temperature gradients.

There are investigated the Lie algebraic structure and integrability properties of a very interesting class of nonlinear dynamical systems called the heavenly equations, which were initiated by Pleba\'nski and later analyzed in a series of articles. Based on the AKS-algebraic and related R-structure schemes there are studied orbits of the corresponding co-adjoint actions, deeply related with the classical Lie-Poisson type structures on them. There is successively demonstrated that their compatibility condition proves to coincide exactly with the corresponding heavenly equation under regard. It is stated that all the heavenly equations allow such an origin and can be equivalently represented as a Lax type compatibility condition for specially built loop vector fields on the torus. The infinite hierarchy of conservations laws, related with the heavenly equations is discussed, its analytical structure, connected with the Casimir invariants is mentioned. In addition, the typical examples of the heavenly equations, demonstrating in details their integrability within the scheme devised in the work, are presented. The Lagrangian representation of the heavenly equations following from their Hamiltonicity with respect to both related commuting to each other evolution flows, as well as their associated bi-Hamiltonian structure are also discussed. The relationship of the heavenly type dynamical ssytems with the classical Lagrange-d'Alambert principle is demonstrated., Comment: 25 pages, with cooperation: D. Blackmore (NJIT) and O. A new exactly solvable spatially one-dimensional quantum superradiance model describing a charged fermionic medium interacting with an external electromagnetic field is proposed. The infinite hierarchy of quantum conservation laws and many-particle Bethe eigenstates that model quantum solitonic impulse structures are constructed. The Hamilton operator renormalization procedure subject to a physically stable vacuum is described, the quantum excitations and quantum solitons, related to the thermodynamical equilibrity of the model, are discussed., Comment: 9 pages. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1210.1744

SALT , *GRAPES , *GENOTYPES , *ROOTSTOCKS , *PLANT capacity - Abstract
Background and Aims. Salt exclusion is an important attribute for wine grapes since many countries have limits to the concentration of sodium (Na+) and/or chloride (Cl−) tolerated in wine. The aim was to investigate whole plant capacity for Na+ and Cl‾ exclusion and the within-plant partitioning of accumulated ions to better understand these important salt tolerance traits. Methods and Results. Rooted cuttings of 140 Ruggeri and K51-40 (good and poor shoot Cl− excluders, respectively) and five hybrids from a cross between the two genotypes were used. When challenged with salinity, 140 Ruggeri limited the accumulation of Cl− and Na+ in the stem, petioles, and laminae and had a significantly lower whole plant concentration of Cl− and Na+ when compared to K51-40. The latter indicates that 140 Ruggeri accumulates less Cl− and Na+ than K51-40 by a lower uptake or a potentially greater efflux by roots, or both. While K51-40 accumulated significantly more Na+, it was able to retrieve it from the xylem; store it in the roots, stem, and petiole; and keep the lamina concentration comparable to that of 140 Ruggeri. Petioles of all genotypes appeared to play a role in limiting Cl− accumulation in laminae and particularly for K51-40, to limit Na+ accumulation in laminae. Conclusions. The grapevine capacity for Cl− and Na+ exclusion can be defined primarily as the lower net accumulation on a whole plant basis, reflecting the difference between the uptake and any efflux that may occur. Lower root to shoot transport is a key factor in shoot Cl− and Na+ exclusion. Petiole accumulation assists in limiting the Cl− and Na+ accumulation in the laminae. Significance of the Study. The study addressed the knowledge gap by examining Cl− and Na+ exclusion on a whole plant basis, highlighting a range of within-plant mechanisms that act in limiting the accumulation of both ions in the laminae. 355.4 - Abstract
This work is an examination of the effectiveness of British infantry firepower from 1642 to 1765, it establishes the manner in which that firepower was organised and managed and how it developed. In order to achieve this it has been necessary to develop and propose a new approach to the study of military history; practical military history, which uses a thorough understanding of the practices and procedures of the army to interpret and analyse contemporary writings on the subject. In doing so it has been possible to identify and analyse the effectiveness of the tactical doctrine and combat techniques of British infantry during the English Civil Wars and then to trace a continuous line of development of doctrine and technique from then until 1765, in the immediate aftermath of the Seven Years War, when this study concludes. It has also been possible to analyse the battlefield effectiveness of those techniques and to identify previously unrecognised aspects of them. It has also been possible to correct some long held misconceptions and to pinpoint times when key changes were brought about, such as the introduction of the organisation of platoons into firings. As well as identifying, for the first time, a single underlying tactical doctrine it has also been possible to clarify the manner in which the methods used to execute that doctrine changed. The work has identified the origins of platoon firing, its earliest form and its subsequent developments during the War of Spanish Succession, thereby correcting the long standing misidentification of the form that it first took and the idea that it remained largely unchanged from the 1680s to the 1740s. It has also identified when changes occurred and analysed the implications for the effectiveness of the firepower and, in some instances, been able to demonstrate in absolute terms, the effectiveness of that firepower. This work will enable military historians to achieve an understanding of how British infantry fought, how they achieved what they did, rather than simply what those achievements were. In using a practical military history approach it also proposes a new approach to military history that will enable an analysis of events to be given, rather than a simple narrative.

Nonlinear Sciences - Exactly Solvable and Integrable Systems - Abstract
Based on the structure of Casimir elements associated with general Hopf algebras there are constructed Liouville-Arnold integrable flows related with naturally induced Poisson structures on arbitrary co-algebra and their deformations. Some interesting special cases including the oscillatory Heisenberg-Weil algebra related co-algebra structures and adjoint with them integrable Hamiltonian systems are considered., Comment: 12 pages

591.7 - Abstract
There is a perceived need to recreate wetland habitats in the UK and to encourage the organisms associated with them. This has been done largely on the basis of trial and error approaches. An attempt was made to assess whether detailed monitoring of a newly-created site could make the whole process more scientific. Consequently, the Deep Water Lake in the Millennium Wetland of the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust Llanelli was monitored monthly from its creation in June 1998 until June 2001 at 10 sites. Water quality factors (including pH, Biological Oxygen Demand, turbidity as well as concentrations of various ions) and sweep net records of macro-invertebrates and fish were carried out. The impacts on biotic measures of the introduction of 4000 roach in June 2000 were also assessed. An attempt was made to assess the impact of the changes in this location to its utilisation by a variety of bird and other species. Although Lake colonisation by some organisms occurred rapidly, the process was not completed within the three year study period. Nevertheless, both numbers and diversity of principal organisms increased steadily with each year of study. Seasonal peaks in some water quality factors were associated with decay of the algal bloom and correlated with numbers of certain organisms. The introduction of fish had no measurable effect on invertebrate populations and their development.

Background The efficacy and tolerability of eculizumab were assessed in REGAIN, a 26-week, phase 3, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in anti-acetylcholine receptor antibody-positive (AChR+) refractory generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG), and its open-label extension. Methods Attainment of ‘minimal symptom expression’ was evaluated using patient-reported outcome measures of gMG symptoms [MG activities of daily living scale (MG-ADL), 15-item MG quality of life questionnaire (MG-QOL15)] at the completion of REGAIN and during the open-label extension. ‘Minimal symptom expression’ was defined as MG-ADL total score of 0–1 or MG-QOL15 total score of 0–3. Results At REGAIN week 26, more eculizumab-treated patients achieved ‘minimal symptom expression’ versus placebo [MG-ADL: 21.4% vs 1.7%; difference 19.8%; 95% confidence interval (CI) 8.5, 31.0; p = 0.0007; MG-QOL15: 16.1% vs 1.7%; difference 14.4%; 95% CI 4.3, 24.6; p = 0.0069]. During the open-label extension, the proportion of patients in the placebo/eculizumab group who achieved ‘minimal symptom expression’ increased after initiating eculizumab treatment and was sustained through 130 weeks of open-label eculizumab (MG-ADL: 1.7 to 27.8%; MG-QOL15: 1.7 to 19.4%). At extension study week 130, similar proportions of patients in the eculizumab/eculizumab and placebo/eculizumab groups achieved ‘minimal symptom expression’ (MG-ADL: 22.9% and 27.8%, respectively, p = 0.7861; MG-QOL15: 14.3% and 19.4%, respectively, p = 0.7531). The long-term tolerability of eculizumab was consistent with previous reports. Conclusions Patients with AChR+ refractory gMG who receive eculizumab can achieve sustained ‘minimal symptom expression’ based on patient-reported outcomes. ‘Minimal symptom expression’ may be a useful tool in measuring therapy effectiveness in gMG. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01997229, NCT02301624.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether eculizumab, a terminal complement inhibitor, improves patient- and physician-reported outcomes (evaluated using the myasthenia gravis activities of daily living profile and the quantitative myasthenia gravis scale, respectively) in patients with refractory anti-acetylcholine receptor antibody-positive generalized myasthenia gravis across four domains, representing ocular, bulbar, respiratory, and limb/gross motor muscle groups. METHODS: Patients with refractory anti-acetylcholine receptor antibody-positive generalized myasthenia gravis were randomized 1:1 to receive either placebo or eculizumab during the REGAIN study (NCT01997229). Patients who completed REGAIN were eligible to continue into the open-label extension trial (NCT02301624) for up to 4 years. The four domain scores of each of the myasthenia gravis activities of daily living profile and the quantitative myasthenia gravis scale recorded throughout REGAIN and through 130 weeks of the open-label extension were analyzed. RESULTS: Of the 125 patients who participated in REGAIN, 117 enrolled in the open-label extension; 61 had received placebo and 56 had received eculizumab during REGAIN. Patients experienced rapid improvements in total scores and all four domain scores of both the myasthenia gravis activities of daily living profile and the quantitative myasthenia gravis scale with eculizumab treatment. These improvements were sustained through 130 weeks of the open-label extension. INTERPRETATION: Eculizumab treatment elicits rapid and sustained improvements in muscle strength across ocular, bulbar, respiratory, and limb/gross motor muscle groups and in associated daily activities in patients with refractory anti-acetylcholine receptor antibody-positive generalized myasthenia gravis. ispartof: ANNALS OF CLINICAL AND TRANSLATIONAL NEUROLOGY vol:7 issue:8 pages:1327-1339 ispartof: location:United States status: published

Introduction/Aims: Individuals with refractory generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG) who have a history of rituximab use and experience persistent symptoms represent a population with unmet treatment needs. The aim of this analysis was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of eculizumab in patients with refractory anti-acetylcholine receptor antibody-positive (AChR+) gMG previously treated with rituximab. Methods: This post hoc subgroup analysis of the phase 3 REGAIN study (NCT01997229) and its open-label extension (OLE; NCT02301624) compared baseline characteristics, safety, and response to eculizumab in participants who had previously received rituximab with those who had not. Rituximab use was not permitted within the 6 months before screening or during REGAIN/OLE. Results: Of 125 REGAIN participants, 14 had received rituximab previously (7 received placebo and 7 received eculizumab). In the previous-rituximab group, 57% had used at least four other immunosuppressants compared with 16% in the no-previous-rituximab group. Myasthenia Gravis Activities of Daily Living total scores from eculizumab baseline to week 130 of eculizumab treatment improved in both the previous-rituximab and no-previous-rituximab groups (least-squares mean −4.4, standard error of the mean [SEM] 1.0 [n = 9] and least-squares mean −4.6, SEM 0.3 [n = 67], respectively; difference = 0.2, 95% confidence interval −1.88 to 2.22). In addition, in both groups, most patients who were treated with eculizumab for 130 weeks achieved a Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America post-intervention status of minimal manifestations (66.7% and 65.0%, respectively). The eculizumab safety profile was similar between groups and consistent with its established profile. Discussion: Eculizumab is an effective therapy for patients with refractory AChR+ gMG, irrespective of whether they had received rituximab treatment previously.

Purpose To evaluate the effect of eculizumab on perceived fatigue in patients with anti-acetylcholine receptor antibody-positive, refractory, generalized myasthenia gravis (MG) using the Quality of Life in Neurological Disorders (Neuro-QOL) Fatigue subscale, and to evaluate correlations between improvements in Neuro-QOL Fatigue and other clinical endpoints. Methods Neuro-QOL Fatigue, MG Activities of Daily Living (MG-ADL), Quantitative MG (QMG), and the 15-item MG Quality of Life (MG-QOL15) scales were administered during the phase 3, randomized, placebo-controlled REGAIN study (eculizumab, n = 62; placebo, n = 63) and subsequent open-label extension (OLE). Data were analyzed using repeated-measures models. Correlations between changes in Neuro-QOL Fatigue and in MG-ADL, QMG, and MG-QOL15 scores were determined at REGAIN week 26. Results At REGAIN week 26, eculizumab-treated patients showed significantly greater improvements in Neuro-QOL Fatigue scores than placebo-treated patients (consistent with improvements in MG-ADL, QMG, and MG-QOL15 scores previously reported in REGAIN). Improvements with eculizumab were sustained through OLE week 52. Correlations between Neuro-QOL Fatigue and MG-QOL15, MG-ADL, and QMG scores were strong for eculizumab-treated patients at REGAIN week 26, and strong, moderate, and weak, respectively, for placebo-treated patients. Conclusions Compared with placebo, eculizumab was associated with improvements in perceived fatigue that strongly correlated with improvements in MG-specific outcome measures. Trial ID Registration: NCT01997229, NCT02301624.

- Abstract
Objectives To approximate the rate of familial myasthenia gravis and the coexistence of other autoimmune disorders in the patients and their families. Design Retrospective cohort study. Setting Clinics across North America. Participants The study included 1032 patients diagnosed with acetylcholine receptor antibody (AChR)-positive myasthenia gravis. Methods Phenotype information of 1032 patients diagnosed with AChR-positive myasthenia gravis was obtained from clinics at 14 centres across North America between January 2010 and January 2011. A critical review of the epidemiological literature on the familial rate of myasthenia gravis was also performed. Results Among 1032 patients, 58 (5.6%) reported a family history of myasthenia gravis. A history of autoimmune diseases was present in 26.6% of patients and in 28.4% of their family members. Discussion The familial rate of myasthenia gravis was higher than would be expected for a sporadic disease. Furthermore, a high proportion of patients had a personal or family history of autoimmune disease. Taken together, these findings suggest a genetic contribution to the pathogenesis of myasthenia gravis.

The exploratory research of applying an acoustic standing wave to a sediment flow stream to fractionate and segregate particles was investigated. Using fundamental physics of particles in an acoustic field, a mathematical model was developed to calculate trajectories of deflected particles due to the application of acoustic standing waves. Then at the bench scale, the above technology was implemented by building a flow chamber with two transducers at opposite ends to generate an acoustic standing wave. The technology was evaluated using uniform size silicon dioxide and silicon carbide particle suspensions in de-ionized water. Due to the acoustic force field, Si[O.sub.2] particles migrated toward the pressure nodes at half wavelength intervals at an optimum frequency of 333 kHz and 40 W power. Dark lines representing particle columns were formed after the application of the acoustic field, which was recorded in videotape. However, due to the small particle size of Si[O.sub.2], particle trajectories could not be recorded, hence the slightly larger sized SiC was used to track particle trajectories. The displacements of SiC particles due to an acoustic force were compared with the mathematical model predictions. For input power level between 3.0 and 5.0 W, the experimental data were comparable to mathematical model predictions. Also, from the experimental data it was possible to develop a relationship between input power and acoustic energy in the resonance chamber. Hence based on preliminary results it can be concluded that the acoustic field can be used either to segregate or fractionate fine particles.
