Commercial thinning is a silvicultural treatment that has been practiced for centuries in Europe. However, in Eastern Canada, its application to naturally regenerated stands is much more recent, and long-term monitoring of this treatment realized in an operational context is rare. We monitored 135 paired sample plots (thinned and control) over a 20-year period. The plots are in stands dominated by either black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.), jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.), or balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) and distributed throughout the boreal and temperate forests of Québec (Canada). Twenty years after treatment, thinning increased quadratic mean diameter (QMD) for balsam fir (1.7 cm) and jack pine (0.7 cm), while for black spruce the change in QMD varied according to the QMD before treatment. Periodic annual increment in gross merchantable volume of thinned and control plots was similar for balsam fir and jack pine but was less in thinned black spruce plots during the first 5 years. Thinning did not affect mortality, which remained low until 15 years after treatment. As commercial thinning should gain popularity over the next years, our study provides a benchmark of the expected effects when the treatment is performed in an operational context. Photosynthetic acclimation to both warming and elevated CO2 of boreal trees remains a key uncertainty in modelling the response of photosynthesis to future climates. We investigated the impact of increased growth temperature and elevated CO2 on photosynthetic capacity (Vcmax and Jmax) in mature trees of two North American boreal conifers, tamarack and black spruce. We show that Vcmax and Jmax at a standard temperature of 25°C did not change with warming, while Vcmax and Jmax at their thermal optima (Topt) and growth temperature (Tg) increased. Moreover, Vcmax and Jmax at either 25°C, Topt or Tg decreased with elevated CO2. The Jmax/Vcmax ratio decreased with warming when assessed at both Topt and Tg but did not significantly vary at 25°C. The Jmax/Vcmax increased with elevated CO2 at either reference temperature. We found no significant interaction between warming and elevated CO2 on all traits. If this lack of interaction between warming and elevated CO2 on the Vcmax, Jmax and Jmax/Vcmax ratio is a general trend, it would have significant implications for improving photosynthesis representation in vegetation models. The effect of climate change on forest dynamics is likely to increase in importance in the forthcoming decades. For this reason, it is essential to predict the extent to which changes in temperature, precipitation, and atmospheric CO2 might affect the development of forest ecosystems and successional pathways. The gap model ZELIG-CFS was used to simulate the potential long-term effects of climate change on species-specific annual change in mean basal area and stand density under two scenarios of representative concentration pathways (RCP), 4.5 and 8.5, for the boreal forest region of Ontario, Canada, where mean temperature, precipitation, and atmospheric CO2 are expected to increase. Forest ecosystems in this boreal region included pure and mixed stands of black spruce (Picea mariana [Mill.] B.S.P.), paper birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.), balsam fir (Abies balsamea [L.] Mill.), jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.), trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.), white spruce (Picea glauca [Moench] Voss), northern white cedar (Thuja occidentalis L.), American larch (Larix laricina [Du Roi] K. Koch), and balsam poplar (Populus balsamifera L.). Simulation results under climate change generally predicted a decline in the basal area and stand density for black spruce, balsam fir, jack pine, and white spruce, but an increase for paper birch, trembling aspen, American larch, and balsam poplar. However, the extent of change differed regionally among species. Forest composition is expected to change over the long term. Simulation results indicated that shade-intolerant deciduous and conifer species will increase their dominance over the 100-year time horizon. Introduction: In eastern Canada, the boreal forest is associated with an important latitudinal shift in forest composition and structure, which occurs in the transition between the mixed southern boreal forest and the coniferous northern boreal forest. Along this transition, upland mixedwood stands with large deciduous trees (important for cavity-dependent vertebrate species) are gradually replaced by forests with smaller conifer trees, primarily black spruce (Picea mariana). Concomitantly, the availability of lowland forests flooded by the American beaver (Castor canadensis), which can provide adequate conditions for tree-cavity users, is also decreasing. Methods: We hypothesized that this latitudinal gradient would bring important changes in the functional diversity and network structure of vertebrate cavity- using communities. Along this latitudinal gradient we used a nest web approach to analyze the structure and robustness of networks of cavity users in upland forests and in lowland forests flooded by beavers. Results: Despite their low availability in the northern forest region, we found that mixedwood stands persisted throughout the boreal forest in being the main drivers of nest webs network structure of upland forests whereas old black spruce stands contribution was low. In lowland forests, beaver ponds harbored nest webs with a rich and complex structure in both forest regions. Species removal simulations revealed that across our latitudinal gradient upland and lowland forest nest webs responded differently. In upland forests, the removal of trembling aspen and the Pileated Woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) caused the highest proportions of secondary extinctions, showing low robustness of nest webs given that these two species were highly connected to the other species. Contrastingly, nest webs in beaver ponds were more robust mainly because excavator species used a higher diversity of tree species despite the removal of the Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus) which induced numerous secondary extinctions. The Pileated Woodpecker remained the pivotal species across the two forest regions in upland forests whereas the Northern Flicker became the main large cavity provider in beaver ponds across the latitudinal gradient. Discussion: We discuss how mixedwood forests and beaver ponds, which are key habitat types for the cavity-using vertebrate community across our latitudinal gradient, should be maintained and protected in landscapes under industrial timber harvesting. Forest fires and logging drive the structure of boreal forest landscapes. According to recent studies, stand origin is a key driver of the variation in wood properties in black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP.), although the underlying mechanisms remain to be elucidated. By comparing post-cut, post-fire and old-growth forests, this study aimed to better distinguish the effects of stand structure from those of the seed or layer origin of the trees on wood properties. We conducted comparative analyses based on ecological characteristics of the sites and static bending tests of small, defect-free wood specimens. Black spruce stands with a regular structure established after logging or fire exhibited higher stiffness at a given cambial age than old-growth forests with irregular structures, as well as lower wood density in the first 40 rings near the pith. However, the bending strength was comparable in all three types of forests studied. Black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) is the dominant conifer species across a large part of North American boreal forests, providing many goods and services essential to human activities, and playing a major climatic role through the global carbon cycle. However, a comprehensive synthesis of the effects of climate change on black spruce has not yet been undertaken. The dynamics of black spruce are influenced by various living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) factors, as well as their combined effects, which are particularly responsive to changes in climate. Climate change predictions suggest that northern ecosystems will experience the world's most significant impact. Therefore, black spruce is likely to undergo profound disruptions in its growth and mortality rate in the next few decades, resulting in significant changes in forestry and carbon storage. However, these changes will not be uniform throughout the entire distribution of the species. Future changes in temperature and precipitation will create more stress for water availability in the boreal forests of western and central North America than in their eastern counterparts. Thus, significant longitudinal and latitudinal gradients in tree growth and mortality variability are expected throughout the range of the species. This literature review aims to summarise the impacts of climate change on individual tree growth and mortality of this major species. While enhanced black spruce productivity could occur through both increased air temperature and nitrogen mineralisation in the soil, moisture limitation in central and western North America will result in significant growth reduction and mortality events across these regions. Conversely, under the expected climate change scenarios, black spruce forests may be more resilient in eastern North America, where climatic conditions appear more suitable, particularly in their northernmost range. In this review, we identify current research gaps for some disturbances, which should be addressed to better understand the impact of climate change on black spruce. Mixed plantations are garnering increased attention due to their potential to provide a broader array of benefits compared to monocultures. Although numerous studies have indicated promising complementarity between black spruce (Picea mariana) and tamarack (Larix laricina), few have delved into individual tree growth interactions to thoroughly assess early growth complementarity. We sampled 119 planted black spruce and their immediate environment to quantify and qualify any differences between two conditions in young plantations: mixed tamarack ("mixtures") and black spruce monocultures ("monocultures") within young plantations. We investigated the effect of neighbouring under four perspectives: tree competition, microenvironment, foliar nutrients, and soil nutrients. Our results showed increased values for black spruce foliar nitrogen total concentration, soil pH, and canopy closure in mixtures compared to monocultures. Furthermore, black spruce stem volume was increased by 38.1% in mixture compared to monoculture. Black spruce stem volume was negatively affected (86% decrease) by the combined effect of shrubs and non-crop trees under high competition pressure, despite the plantation being mechanically released in 2017. Climate change (CC) necessitates reforestation/afforestation programs to mitigate its impacts and maximize carbon sequestration. But comprehending how tree growth, a proxy for fitness and resilience, responds to CC is critical to maximize these programs' effectiveness. Variability in tree response to CC across populations can notably be influenced by the standing genetic variation encompassing both neutral and adaptive genetic diversity. Here, a framework is proposed to assess tree growth potential at the population scale while accounting for standing genetic variation. We applied this framework to black spruce (BS, Picea mariana [Mill] B.S.P.), with the objectives to (1) determine the key climate variables having impacted BS growth response from 1974 to 2019, (2) examine the relative roles of local adaptation and the phylogeographic structure in this response, and (3) project BS growth under two Shared Socioeconomic Pathways while taking standing genetic variation into account. We modeled growth using a machine learning algorithm trained with dendroecological and genetic data obtained from over 2600 trees (62 populations divided in three genetic clusters) in four 48‐year‐old common gardens, and simulated growth until year 2100 at the common garden locations. Our study revealed that high summer and autumn temperatures negatively impacted BS growth. As a consequence of warming, this species is projected to experience a decline in growth by the end of the century, suggesting maladaptation to anticipated CC and a potential threat to its carbon sequestration capacity. This being said, we observed a clear difference in response to CC within and among genetic clusters, with the western cluster being more impacted than the central and eastern clusters. Our results show that intraspecific genetic variation, notably associated with the phylogeographic structure, must be considered when estimating the response of widespread species to CC. Individual tree diameter at breast height (DBH) distribution is an important information for forest management planning. Forest managers obtain the DBH data either by field measurements or estimations using predictive models. However, probability distribution models are still lacking or need improvement. Therefore, we aimed to construct and fit diameter distribution models that reflect forest structure and composition change. We evaluated gamma, log-normal, and Weibull probability distribution functions (PDFs) for two commercially important tree species, black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill) B.S.P.) and jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb), grown in natural stands across Ontario, Canada. We modelled the parameters of the distributions as a function of stand-level variables for these species. We used DBH data from 735 permanent sample plots. Our results showed that all three evaluated PDFs reflected observed DBH distribution. We demonstrated that the moment-based recovered parameters could represent the maximum likelihood-estimated parameters precisely, and parameters of the PDFs can be modelled as a function of stand-level dynamic covariates. The models unbiasedly predicted the PDF parameters DBH means and DBH classes. The R2 of the model fit ranged between 0.35 and 0.98 for the predicted parameters and 0.90 and 0.97 for the predicted DBH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spring snowmelt occurs for a short duration on an annual time scale, but their timings considerably affect the carbon and hydrological cycle in high‐latitude ecosystems. Here, we developed a simple snowmelt model, treating the ecosystem surface as a bulk‐surface layer. Energy fluxes across this bulk surface and the snow‐soil boundary determine snow temperature and the energy utilized for snowmelt. Parameterizing the bulk surface using decade‐long eddy covariance site data from two Alaskan open black spruce forests offered an opportunity to quantitatively evaluate meteorological drivers affecting snowmelt timings without the needs for detailed canopy information. The sensitivity analysis suggested that the total snowfall on the forest floor, ranging from 0.35 m in 2016 to about 1 m in 2018 and 2020, was the most crucial driver for snowmelt timing. This factor accounted for a 10‐day difference in the interannual variations in snow disappearance dates. The importance of the snowfall varied from year to year, and in 2013, the late snowmelt was characterized by low air temperatures, which increased sensible heat loss from the snowpack. The importance of atmospheric radiation was revealed in relatively warm years, such as 2016 and 2019. Our modeling approach necessitates adjusting one empirical parameter that reflects the heat conductivity from the bulk surface to the snow, based on observations. Nevertheless, despite this need for adjustment, the bulk‐surface approach helps identify important meteorological drivers underlying observed snowmelt within a simple theoretical framework. Plain Language Summary: It is essential to understand why and how spring snowmelt occurs in boreal forests because of its impact on both the biological and hydrological processes in the ecosystem. However, meteorological drivers related to snowmelt often change simultaneously, which makes it challenging to determine which single driver is vital for snowmelt. To address this challenge, we constructed a simple snowmelt model that treats the ecosystem surface as a single bulk layer. The simple model bypasses the needs for detailed canopy information and is easily constrained by observed data. Applying the model to decadal observation data from Alaskan boreal forests, we found that snowfall, air temperature, and atmospheric radiation were important meteorological drivers for explaining interannual variations in snowmelt timing. Each of them explained about 1–2 weeks of snowmelt disappearance dates. We also demonstrated that the model helped explain why the snowmelt was late in 2013 and early in 2016 and 2019 and why snow disappearance dates differed between study sites. While a simple model has its limitations, it can be beneficial for understanding snowmelt characteristics within a simple theoretical framework. Biotic disturbance agents are important factors influencing forest dynamics; incorporating them into management planning requires a detailed understanding of their distribution, prevalence, and effects on stand dynamics. However, this information can be difficult to collect in remote forest systems, such as lowland black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) forests affected by eastern spruce dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium pusillum Peck, hereafter ESDM). In such cases, predictive modeling is often needed to inform management decisions and address forest health questions. Here, we used two publicly available datasets to predict areas where black spruce is more likely to be infested with ESDM in northeastern Minnesota, USA. Using random forest modeling and logistic regression, we found location, stand age, basal area, site index, average diameter, and metrics of species composition to be among the most important predictors of ESDM occurrence. Predictions showed two regions of greater likelihood of infestation with distinct ecological characteristics and ownership patterns. By understanding how stand structural characteristics relate to ESDM infestations, managers can improve monitoring and management of ESDM at the stand and landscape scales. The effects of cutting speed (CS), feed per knife (FK), and temperature condition on energy requirements for processing black spruce logs by a chipper-canter were assessed. Nine groups of 15 logs were tested at three CS (20, 25, and 30 m/s) and three FK (19, 25, and 32 mm). Each log was processed under frozen (−13 °C) and unfrozen (19 °C) conditions. Mean power increased as CS and FK increased. This behavior is explained by the mechanical relationships between the parameters and the rotation and feed speeds, as well as by the increase in the volume of wood cut. The energy consumption and the specific energy consumption increased as CS increased and FK decreased. For the three electrical criteria, more energy was consumed when processing frozen logs, which is due to the greater mechanical properties of wood. A positive relationship was identified between sapwood and heartwood moisture content, basic density, grain angle, and wood volume transformed into chips, as covariates, and the three energy criteria. The effects of cutting speed (CS) and feed-per-knife (FK) on the surface quality of black spruce (Picea mariana [Mill.] B.S.P.) cants processed by a chipper-canter were evaluated. Nine matched groups of logs were studied at 20, 25, and 30 m/s of CS, and 19, 25, and 32 mm of FK. Each log was processed at frozen and unfrozen conditions. Knots and grain angle measurements were taken on the cant surfaces after machining. The quality of cants was assessed utilizing waviness, roughness, and torn grain. The results showed that the surface quality was affected by CS and FK. Surface quality improved as FK decreased, likely due to decreasing cutting forces. The waviness tended to improve as CS increased, which could be partly due to the reduction of the non-cutting period between knives at higher CS. The waviness and depth of torn grain were similar for frozen and unfrozen logs. Surface quality varied within the cant, being generally poorer in the lower half. Knots and orientation of spiral grain (left-handed) contributed to diminishing the quality of surfaces. Finally, the results of correlations and regression analyses showed that optimizing the cutting conditions to decrease waviness should also reduce the depth of torn grain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The peatland-dominated Hudson Bay Lowland (HBL) is facing increasing pressures from climate change and resource extraction operations. Despite the potential for widespread changes in water availability to occur, information about hydrological and ecological feedbacks in the HBL remains limited. This study, located near the De Beers Victor diamond mine ~90 km west of Attawapiskat (Ontario, Canada), investigates the influence of mine dewatering activities (‘pumping’) and climatic variability on the radial growth of black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) trees. Tree stem disks were collected from stunted black spruce trees in one reference (n=25) and three mine-affected bogs within the area of dewatering influence (n=41) along a transect of variable underlying aquitard (marine sediment) thickness. Pumping was not found to have influenced annual ring-width indices (RWIs) in mine-affected areas with either thick (6 to >18 m) or thin (< 5m) underlying marine sediment, as these sites showed similar growth patterns to the reference site during the period of mine operation. Analyses of the influence of climate on tree radial growth (1970–2018) using 20-year moving windows showed significant (p < 0.05) positive correlations (Pearson R) between residual RWI and mean monthly air temperature, including June (1979–2007 excluding the window of 1986–2006), August (1989–2018) and September (1984–2009). In addition, for the period during which ground temperature data were available (2011–2018), significant negative correlations were detected between residual RWI and mean monthly soil temperatures in late winter and early spring. The above relationships highlight the importance of both growing and shoulder season conditions for tree growth. As the HBL continues to respond to climate change, the growth response and potential proliferation of black spruce will undoubtedly influence the water balance and hydrological function of bog peatlands in the region.

As the vegetation in the Arctic changes, tundra ecosystems along the southern border of the Arctic are becoming greener and gradually giving way to boreal ecosystems. This change is affecting local populations, wildlife, energy exchange processes between environmental compartments, and the carbon cycle. To understand the progression and the implications of this change in vegetation, satellite measurements and surface models can be employed. However, in situ observational data are required to validate these measurements and models. This paper presents observational data from two nearby sites in the forest–tundra ecotone in the Tasiapik Valley near Umiujaq in Northern Quebec, Canada. One site is on a mixture of lichen and shrub tundra. The associated data set comprises 9 years of meteorological, soil and snow data as well as 3 years of eddy covariance data. The other site, 850 m away, features vegetation consisting mostly of tall shrubs and black spruce. For that location, 6 years of meteorological, soil and snow data are available. In addition to the data from the automated stations, profiles of snow density and specific surface area were collected during field campaigns. Seismic lines in western Canada's boreal region are linear disturbances that affect the habitat of threatened woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou). To hasten the return of forest cover and ultimately to restore caribou habitat, restoration managers use silviculture treatments in wet areas that involve the mechanical mounding of seismic lines to create artificial hummocks. Tree planting then takes place on top of these hummocks. However, the effectiveness of this silviculture technique for restoring seismic lines in peatlands is largely untested. Here we sampled incremental height growth of coniferous seedlings at 41 seismic line plots in poor and rich treed fens in northeast Alberta, Canada. We compared lines that had been treated with inverted mounding (a type of mechanical mounding) and subsequent tree planting, to nearby lines that were left untreated for natural recovery. We used generalized linear mixed models to test the effect of silviculture treatments on 5‐year growth increments of black spruce (Picea mariana) and tamarack (Larix laricina). Overall, we found that mounding and tree planting improved seedling growth compared to seismic lines regenerating naturally. However, growth responses were found to vary by species, ecosite, initial seedling size, and light availability. This suggests that site‐specific prioritization of mounding within peatlands may be more efficient considering the widespread nature of seismic lines. Future experiments testing growth responses to other mounding techniques that are designed to preserve the soil profile. Black spruce is the most common tree species in Canada, dominating treed peatlands where they are usually stunted. We used 495 destructively sampled trees from 56 plots to develop allometric models of aboveground biomass by components (stem, branches, and needles) for small (<5 m tall) black spruce from peatlands in the Taiga Plains and Boreal Plains Ecozones of Western Canada, for which there were no specific models available of biomass by components. We used leave-one-plot-out cross-validation to assess transferability and compare our models with existing national and ecozone-specific equations. Our models predicted total tree biomass with better accuracy and less biased estimates than the national model (relative RMSE: 30% versus 35% national; relative bias: +1% versus –12% national). Similar results were obtained in other external datasets. Existing ecozone equations performed worse than either our models or the national ones. When we applied the models at the plot level to predict aboveground biomass density (Mg·ha−1), our models outperformed the national model again (relative RMSE: 15.9% versus 18.6% national, relative bias: +3.5% versus –13.6% national). These results indicate that at least for peatlands of Western Canada, our models provide better aboveground biomass estimates for small black spruce trees than existing models. The effect of the tip path overlap on debarking quality of unfrozen and frozen black spruce logs was studied. The power, energy consumption, and torque were also measured for both temperature conditions. The experiment consisted of debarking logs using three overlaps (8, 27, and 43%) at two temperatures (−12°C and +20°C). Debarking quality was evaluated by the proportion of bark remaining on log surfaces and by the amount of wood in bark residues. Log characteristics (dimensions, eccentricity, and knot features), bark/wood shear strength (BWSS), moisture content, and basic densities of sapwood, inner, and outer barks were measured and treated as covariates. Experiments revealed that tip path overlap affects debarking quality for both temperature conditions: the amount of bark remaining on log surfaces decreased, and the proportion of wood in bark residues increased as tip path overlap increased. In addition, the effects of bark/wood shear strength, the proportion of knot area and sapwood, inner and outer barks densities, and moisture content on debarking quality criteria were analyzed. The mean power, energy consumption, and torque increased as the tip path overlap increased. These parameters were also positively affected by the log diameter and BWSS for frozen logs. The results give helpful information to improve debarking quality within the studied range of overlaps, log characteristics, and debarking parameters with efficient energy use. European forests are facing ongoing climate change, and certain tree species are being critically impacted. The Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) is one of the most sensitive species to climate fluctuations, a fact manifesting itself through massive dieback resulting in a lack of high-quality timber and timber market destabilization. Therefore, the possibility of wood substitution with non-native spruce species, namely, black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) Britt., Sterns, et Poggenburg), Serbian spruce (Picea omorika (Pančić) Purk.), and blue spruce (Picea pungens Engelm.), under the specific conditions of forest reclamations with great potential for future afforestation was tested. Wood density, modulus of rupture, and modulus of elasticity were used to evaluate wood quality in comparison with native Norway spruce. The results confirmed that only the Serbian spruce reached the quality of Norway spruce and even exceeded it in terms of wood density (P. omorika 525 kg·m−3 vs. P. abies 517 kg·m−3) and exhibited comparable parameters with regard to other properties. The density of the other species was significantly lower for blue spruce (476 kg·m−3) and black spruce (468 kg·m−3). A similar trend was found for other wood parameters, which confirmed that Norway spruce quality was nearly comparable with that of Serbian spruce. On the other hand, black spruce and blue spruce did not match the quality of Norway spruce. The within-stem variability of the properties tested was low for all the spruce species examined. In conclusion, the Serbian spruce showed great potential for future usage in forest management and is one of the possible methods of Norway spruce replacement in times of unprecedented forest disturbances under the effects of global climate change. Black spruce (Picea mariana [Mill.] B.S.P.) is a dominant conifer species in the North American boreal forest that plays important ecological and economic roles. Here, we present the first genome assembly of P. mariana with a reconstructed genome size of 18.3 Gbp and NG50 scaffold length of 36.0 kbp. A total of 66,332 protein-coding sequences were predicted in silico and annotated based on sequence homology. We analyzed the evolutionary relationships between P. mariana and 5 other spruces for which complete nuclear and organelle genome sequences were available. The phylogenetic tree estimated from mitochondrial genome sequences agrees with biogeography; specifically, P. mariana was strongly supported as a sister lineage to P. glauca and 3 other taxa found in western North America, followed by the European Picea abies. We obtained mixed topologies with weaker statistical support in phylogenetic trees estimated from nuclear and chloroplast genome sequences, indicative of ancient reticulate evolution affecting these 2 genomes. Clustering of protein-coding sequences from the 6 Picea taxa and 2 Pinus species resulted in 34,776 orthogroups, 560 of which appeared to be specific to P. mariana. Analysis of these specific orthogroups and d N /d S analysis of positive selection signatures for 497 single-copy orthogroups identified gene functions mostly related to plant development and stress response. The P. mariana genome assembly and annotation provides a valuable resource for forest genetics research and applications in this broadly distributed species, especially in relation to climate adaptation. Climate change is driving substantial changes in North American boreal forests, including changes in productivity, mortality, recruitment, and biomass. Despite the importance for carbon budgets and informing management decisions, there is a lack of near‐term (5–30 year) forecasts of expected changes in aboveground biomass (AGB). In this study, we forecast AGB changes across the North American boreal forest using machine learning, repeat measurements from 25,000 forest inventory sites, and gridded geospatial datasets. We find that AGB change can be predicted up to 30 years into the future, and that training on sites across the entire domain allows accurate predictions even in regions with only a small amount of existing field data. While predicting AGB loss is less skillful than gains, using a multi‐model ensemble can improve the accuracy in detecting change direction to >90% for observed increases, and up to 70% for observed losses. Higher stem density, winter temperatures, and the presence of temperate tree species in forest plots were positively associated with AGB change, whereas greater initial biomass, continentality (difference between mean summer and winter temperatures), prevalence of black spruce (Picea mariana), summer precipitation, and early warning metrics from long‐term remote sensing time series were negatively associated with AGB change. Across the domain, we predict nondisturbance‐induced declines in AGB at 23% of sites by 2030. The approach developed here can be used to estimate near‐future forest biomass in boreal North America and inform relevant management decisions. Our study also highlights the power of machine learning multi‐model ensembles when trained on a large volume of forest inventory plots, which could be applied to other regions with adequate plot density and spatial coverage. Many disturbances are shifting in severity, frequency, and extent due to changing climate and human activities. Altered disturbance regimes can trigger shifts in ecosystem state where recovery to the pre-disturbance ecosystem is uncertain. In the western North American boreal forest, the intensification of wildfire can cause canopy dominance to switch from black spruce (Picea mariana) to deciduous trees such as Alaska paper birch (Betula neoalaskana) and trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides). Understanding the key mechanisms that determine the resilience and stability of these alternative community types is required for the prediction of future forest dynamics. Here, we assess patterns of post-fire tree recovery across a pre-fire gradient of spruce- to deciduous-dominated forests in Interior Alaska and quantify compositional and environmental thresholds that support the resilience of alternative canopy types. We found post-fire organic soil depth of stands on a recovery trajectory to deciduous dominance (7.3 ± 5.5 cm) were similar regardless of pre-fire composition and significantly shallower than spruce (14.9 ± 9.0 cm) or mixed trajectories (10.4 ± 5.9 cm). Deciduous-dominated stands were highly resilient to fire, as 100% remained deciduous-dominated post-fire. Even when deciduous trees only accounted for a small proportion (12%) of the pre-fire stand, deciduous trees often became dominant after wildfire. We conclude that the establishment of deciduous bud banks and seed sources creates a strong hysteresis in stand recovery that reinforces the resilience of deciduous-dominated boreal forests to wildfire. Accounting for the resilience of this alternative stable state to wildfire suggests that shifts from spruce to deciduous dominance caused by shifting wildfire will have long-term effects on future structure and function of boreal forests and vegetation feedbacks to climate change. Climate change is rapidly altering weather patterns, resulting in shifts in climatic zones. The survival of trees in specific locations depends on their functional traits. Local populations exhibit trait adaptations that ensure their survival and accomplishment of growth and reproduction processes during the growing season. Studying these traits offers valuable insights into species responses to present and future environmental conditions, aiding the implementation of measures to ensure forest resilience and productivity. This study investigates the variability in functional traits among five black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) provenances originating from a latitudinal gradient along the boreal forest, and planted in a common garden in Quebec, Canada. We examined differences in bud phenology, growth performance, lifetime first reproduction, and the impact of a late-frost event on tree growth and phenological adjustments. The findings revealed that trees from northern sites exhibit earlier budbreak, lower growth increments, and reach reproductive maturity earlier than those from southern sites. Late-frost damage affected growth performance, but no phenological adjustment was observed in the successive year. Local adaptation in the functional traits may lead to maladaptation of black spruce under future climate conditions or serve as a potent evolutionary force promoting rapid adaptation under changing environmental conditions. In boreal old-growth forests, advance regeneration typically attains canopy dominance through growth release events following partial disturbances. We sampled competing Picea mariana (Mill.) and Abies balsamea (L.) in disturbed old-growth stands in Quebec, Canada, to understand the intra- and interspecific size hierarchy development. We reconstructed tree size development and examined the role of initial size difference, time between germination and a disturbance, and the strength of response to the disturbance in determining tree size hierarchies. Trees that regenerated first generally dominated their intraspecific competitors also following a disturbance event. However, prolonged time between germination and disturbance resulted in a less deterministic outcome. Tree size difference prior to disturbance also influenced the development of size hierarchies. In interspecific competition between individuals of the same diameter, A. balsamea had a 61% probability of gaining dominance over P. mariana, the probability being 50% if P. mariana was 5 mm larger than A. balsamea. Dominant trees generally had the strongest response to the disturbance, reinforcing the existing size hierarchies. The largest trees typically gain dominance after a partial disturbance. However, interspecific competition is less predictable than intraspecific competition, small initial size difference, and prolonged time in suppression potentially changing tree size hierarchies. The European spruce bark beetle Ips typographus and the North American spruce beetle Dendroctonus rufipennis cause high mortality of spruces on their native continents. Both species have been inadvertently transported beyond their native ranges. With similar climates and the presence of congeneric spruce hosts in Europe and North America, there is a risk that one or both bark beetle species become established into the non-native continent. There are many challenges that an introduced population of bark beetles would face, but an important prerequisite for establishment is the presence of suitable host trees. We tested the suitability of non-native versus native hosts by exposing cut bolts of Norway spruce (Picea abies), black spruce (Picea mariana) and white spruce (Picea glauca) to beetle attacks in the field in Norway and Canada. We quantified attack density, brood density and reproductive success of I. typographus and D. rufipennis in the three host species. We found that I. typographus attacked white and black spruce at comparable densities to its native host, Norway spruce, and with similar reproductive success in all three host species. In contrast, D. rufipennis strongly preferred to attack white spruce (a native host) but performed better in the novel Norway spruce host than it did in black spruce, a suboptimal native host. Our results suggest that I. typographus will find abundant and highly suitable hosts in North America, while D. rufipennis in Europe may experience reduced reproductive success in Norway spruce. Climate change is a major evolutionary force that can affect the structure of forest ecosystems worldwide. Red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) has recently faced a considerable decline in the Southern Appalachians due to rapid environmental change, which includes historical land use, and atmospheric pollution. In the northern part of its range, red spruce is sympatric with closely related black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.), where introgressive hybridization commonly occurs. We investigated range-wide population genetic diversity and structure and inferred postglacial migration patterns and evolution of red spruce using nuclear microsatellites. Moderate genetic diversity and differentiation were observed in red spruce. Genetic distance, maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses identified two distinct population clusters: southern glacial populations, and the evolutionarily younger northern populations. Approximate Bayesian computation suggests that patterns of admixture are the result of divergence of red spruce and black spruce from a common ancestor and then introgressive hybridization during post-glacial migration. Genetic diversity, effective population size (Ne) and genetic differentiation were higher in the northern than in the southern populations. Our results along with previously available fossil data suggest that Picea rubens and Picea mariana occupied separate southern refugia during the last glaciation. After initial expansion in the early Holocene, these two species faced a period of recession and formed a secondary coastal refugium, where introgressive hybridization occurred, and then both species migrated northward. As a result, various levels of black spruce alleles are present in the sympatric red spruce populations. Allopatric populations of P. rubens and P. mariana have many species-specific alleles and much fewer alleles from common ancestry. Winter represents a stressful period for many organisms, and terrestrial insects are particularly susceptible to adverse thermal conditions. However, exposure to thermal stress and its effects on insect survival and performance can be modulated by various external factors. In forest systems, the overwintering microsite, stand structure, and regional climatic conditions may play a role in overwintering survival and performance at the individual microsite, local stand, and landscape level, respectively. To better understand the effects of these potential influences, rarely examined simultaneously, we deployed wild and lab-reared diapausing spruce budworm in a series of field experiments established across a range of spatial scales.Overwintering survival was higher on black spruce than balsam fir, likely owing to differences in substrate structure (and hence microsite quality/availability) between these two hosts. At the stand level, neither tree species nor age had an impact on insect survival; however, we observed a positive carryover effect of overwintering in a black spruce stand, enhancing performance in post-diapause development, possibly owing to buffering against warm spells during winter. Lastly, despite exposure to a broad range of winter temperatures across an extensive latitudinal gradient, overwintering survival was high (>80%) and did not vary at the landscape level.Our results indicate that insect overwintering was influenced by environmental factors at multiple spatial scales. Interestingly, despite it being considered a poor host for larval feeding, overwintering on black spruce clearly benefited spruce budworm survival and post-diapause performance. A conventional straight knife cutterhead and three helical knife cutterheads were tested for planing sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) and black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) woods. The effects of helix angle and feed per knife (FK) on roughness, tactical perception, and anatomical features of the planed surfaces were evaluated. Rk and Rpk parameters were found to be more descriptive in evaluating the roughness of these woods and proved to be good indicators of tactile perception. Roughness increased as the helix angle and feed per knife increased for both wood species. Sugar maple showed smoother surface than black spruce. Surfaces planed with helical knives showed a fuzzy texture resulting from cell-wall fibrillation. For sugar maple wood, the differences in roughness between straight and 40° helical knives were small. Therefore, the latter must be preferred for planing this species. Roughness of planed black spruce also increased as helix angle increased and in this case its effect depended on FK. The straight knife produced the lowest roughness, for all studied FKs. Planing with helical knives produced higher roughness as a result of cell-wall fibrillation. This defect was more pronounced than that of sugar maple, and by far more present with helical knives of 50° and 60°. Therefore, straight knives working at low FK (1.3 mm) should be preferred for planing black spruce wood when roughness is a critical concern. The cutting speed (CS) and feed per knife (FK) are among the most important variables affecting chip size produced by chipper-canters. Nine groups of black spruce logs were processed at three CS (20, 25, and 30 m/s) and three FK (19, 25, and 32 mm). Each log was processed under frozen (−13°C) and unfrozen (19°C) conditions. Chip size was assessed by thickness and by width/length. Chip size increased as CS decreased and FK increased. Frozen logs produced thinner chips and higher proportions of small chips. The weighted mean chip thickness (WCT) increased as the FK increased and CS decreased. The highest accepts proportion by thickness was obtained at 19 mm FK and 20 m/s CS, while the highest width/length accepts were produced at 32 mm FK and 20 m/s CS. Grain angle and knot proportion were the most significative covariates for chip size. Regressions showed that FK, CS, knot proportion, grain angle, and taper were the best predictors for WCT, explaining 86% and 81% of the WCT variations for frozen and unfrozen logs, respectively. Therefore, a combined evaluation of cutting parameters and raw material is essential to predict WTC, reduce chip size variations, and thus improve chip quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Traditional phenological models use chilling and thermal forcing (temperature sum or degree‐days) to predict budbreak. Because of the heightening impact of climate and other related biotic or abiotic stressors, a model with greater biological support is needed to better predict budbreak.Here, we present an original mechanistic model based on the physiological processes taking place before and during budbreak of conifers. As a general principle, we assume that phenology is driven by the carbon status of the plant, which is closely related to environmental variables and the annual cycle of dormancy–activity. The carbon balance of a branch was modelled from autumn to winter with cold acclimation and dormancy and from winter to spring when deacclimation and growth resumption occur.After being calibrated in a field experiment, the model was validated across a large area (> 34 000 km2), covering multiple conifers stands in Québec (Canada) and across heated plots for the SPRUCE experiment in Minnesota (USA). The model accurately predicted the observed dates of budbreak in both Québec (±3.98 d) and Minnesota (±7.98 d).The site‐independent calibration provides interesting insights on the physiological mechanisms underlying the dynamics of dormancy break and the resumption of vegetative growth in spring. The effects of wood species on the performance of the strander-canting process were studied. Logs of balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.), black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.), and jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb) were processed under two temperature conditions (-13.3 °C and 22.3 °C). The cutting and feed speeds, rake angle, cutting width, and strand thickness were kept constant. The strander-canting process was evaluated by the strand dimensions and yield, as well as by the energy requirements. The results showed that wood species significantly affected the proportions of strands and fines, maximum power, mean energy consumption, and specific cutting energy when processing the logs under frozen conditions. In unfrozen conditions, wood species only affected the strand width and the maximum power. Unfrozen logs produced higher proportions of strands and a lower volume of pin chips and fines than frozen logs. As the vegetation in the Arctic changes, tundra ecosystems along the southern border of the Arctic are becoming greener and gradually giving way to boreal ecosystems. This change is affecting local populations, wildlife, energy exchange processes between environmental compartments, and the carbon cycle. To understand the progression and the implications of this change in vegetation, satellite measurements and surface models can be employed. However, in situ observational data are required to validate these measurements and models. This paper presents observational data from two nearby sites in the forest-tundra ecotone in the Tasiapik Valley near Umiujaq in Northern Quebec, Canada. One site is on a mixture of lichen and shrub tundra. The associated data set comprises 9 years of meteorological, soil and snow data as well as 3 years of eddy covariance data. The other site, 850 m away, features vegetation consisting mostly of tall shrubs and black spruce. For that location, 6 years of meteorological, soil and snow data are available. In addition to the data from the automated stations, profiles for snow density and specific surface area were collected during field campaigns. Resilience of plant communities to disturbance is supported by multiple mechanisms, including ecological legacies affecting propagule availability, species' environmental tolerances, and biotic interactions. Understanding the relative importance of these mechanisms for plant community resilience supports predictions of where and how resilience will be altered with disturbance. We tested mechanisms underlying resilience of forests dominated by black spruce (Picea mariana) to fire disturbance across a heterogeneous forest landscape in the Northwest Territories, Canada. We combined surveys of naturally regenerating seedlings at 219 burned plots with experimental manipulations of ecological legacies via seed addition of four tree species and vertebrate exclosures to limit granivory and herbivory at 30 plots varying in moisture and fire severity. Black spruce recovery was greatest where it dominated pre-fire, at wet sites with deep residual soil organic layers, and fire conditions of low soil or canopy combustion and longer return intervals. Experimental addition of seed indicated all species were seed-limited, emphasizing the importance of propagule legacies. Black spruce and birch (Betula papyrifera) recruitment were enhanced with vertebrate exclusion. Our combination of observational and experimental studies demonstrates black spruce is vulnerable to effects of increased fire activity that erode ecological legacies. Moreover, black spruce relies on wet areas with deep soil organic layers where other species are less competitive. However, other species can colonize these areas if enough seed is available or soil moisture is altered by climate change. With rapid economic development, social competition has become increasingly intense. Stress experienced by individuals has increased dramatically, resulting in a steady rise in insomnia. The present study investigated the effect of different concentrations of Picea mariana essential oils (PMEOs) on sleep improvement in mice exhibiting p-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA)-induced insomnia. First, the main constituents of PMEOs were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The mice were weighed daily, and the sleep latency and duration were measured in each mouse group in the inverted reflex experiment. The number of neurons in the mouse brain was measured using Nissl staining. The expression level of 5-hydroxytryptamine-1A (5-HT1A) was determined by immunohistochemistry, whereas the expression level of gamma-aminobutyric acid A receptor subunit alpha-1 (GABAARɑ1) was detected by immunohistochemistry, western blotting, and reverse transcription-quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR). GC-MS identified the top five components comprising PMEOs as bornyl acetate, camphene, α-pinene, β-pinene, and 3-carene. Inhalation of PMEOs resulted in a progressive increase in the rate of body weight change, a decrease in sleep latency, and prolonged sleep duration in experimental mice. In Nissl staining, the number of neurons was significantly reduced in the PCPA group when compared with the elevated number in the PMEOs group. Immunohistochemistry revealed increased expression levels of GABAARα1 and 5-HT1A in the PMEOs group. Western blotting and RT-qPCR results showed increased levels of GABAARα1 protein and gene expression, respectively. Herbivores affect plants via direct consumption, but also indirectly via changes in the vegetation. These indirect effects may only manifest after decades of exposure and, as a result, their impact is rarely accounted for. To better understand the direct and indirect impacts of a large herbivore, moose (Alces alces), on forests, we measured tree growth in areas that were both subjected to and excluded from herbivory for over 80 years. Growth data were gathered from five tree species, ranging from low to high palatability. We found that at small sizes, Betula papyrifera, a preferred species, benefited from herbivore exclusion. However, larger individuals grew more when exposed to herbivory, a response we attribute to lower competition in heavily browsed conditions. Populus tremuloides, a highly preferred tree, did not show any differences between levels of herbivory. Abies balsamea, a preferred winter browsed, was only marginally affected by browsing at smaller sizes. The two non-preferred species, Picea glauca and Picea mariana, did not show differential growth between herbivory levels. We conclude that herbivores can impact forests through both direct and indirect effects, that these effects are size specific, and that effects vary among species in ways not always predicted by consumption patterns. A conventional straight knife cutterhead and three helical knife cutterheads were tested for planing black spruce wood (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.). Effects of helix angle and feed per knife (FK) on maximum cutting forces and sound level were evaluated. A 3-axis dynamometer and an array microphone were used to simultaneously record the forces and the sound level, respectively. Parallel (FP), lateral (FL), resultant (FR) forces, and sound level increased as FK increased. Helical tools produced lower FP, positive and negative normal forces (FNP and FNN), and FR. Parallel forces tended to decrease as helix angle increased at high FK (4.7 mm). Differences among helical tools were not significant for normal and resultant forces. Cutterheads with the two highest helix angles (50° and 60°) produced higher FL at low (1.3 mm) feed per knife. Impacts of these cutting forces on the production of surface defects and ways to reduce them were discussed. Four matched groups of 15 black spruce logs were processed with a chipper–canter at temperatures of 20, 0, −10, and −20°C. Each log was transformed at two moisture contents (MCs) (green and air-dried) using two cutting widths (CWs) (12.7 and 25.4 mm). Mean MC for each CW was assessed from a sample of the obtained chips. The results showed that mean power, energy consumption, and specific cutting energy were significantly affected by the temperature and CW, and in a lesser degree by the MC. These parameters were greater when cutting frozen logs. Mean power and energy consumption were higher at the larger CW, as a result of the higher volume of removed wood. However, specific cutting energy increased as CW decreased. This behavior was related to the higher level of fragmentation occurred with the smaller CW. Ericaceous shrubs often interfere with the growth of black spruce seedlings on regenerating forest sites in Eastern Canada. Mechanical site preparation such as scarification may improve this situation, but it is uncertain whether this is solely due to a reduction in direct competition from the shrubs, or also from a sustained improvement in nutritional site quality. We sampled experimental plots in two boreal climate regions (i.e. warmer-drier Abitibi vs. cooler-wetter Côte-Nord) where scarification, performed 18 years earlier, had increased the growth of black spruce relative to non-scarified plots. Trees of scarified plots had closed the canopy more than trees of non-scarified plots in Côte-Nord, but not in Abitibi. Total ground cover of ericaceous shrubs was lower in scarified plots at both sites, the main species being Kalmia angustifolia (i.e. Kalmia) in Abitibi and Rhododendron groenlandicum (i.e. Labrador tea) in Côte-Nord. Scarified plots at both sites had significantly shorter current-year ericaceous rhizomes than non-scarified plots, but the difference between treatments was significantly greater in Côte-Nord than in Abitibi. In Côte-Nord, ericaceous shrubs on scarified plots had a lower specific rhizome mass, higher specific leaf area, lower tannin and higher N concentrations in leaves and litter, and lower N use efficiency than on non-scarified plots. By comparison, scarification in Abitibi affected only one foliar property, namely a reduction in the C:N ratio of Kalmia leaf litter. Forest floor N mineralization rates and black spruce needle N concentrations were higher in scarified than non-scarified plots across both sites. Taken collectively, results suggest that mechanical scarification on ericaceous shrub-dominated cutovers can reduce competitive traits of boreal ericaceous shrubs and improve nutritional site quality, especially in cooler-wetter climates. Highlights Mechanical scarification increased growth rates of black spruce saplings. Scarified plots showed less above- and below-ground growth of ericaceous shrubs. Foliar and rhizomatous traits suggested higher soil fertility on scarified plots. Soil N mineralization and spruce needle N were higher on scarified plots. Aim: Altitudinal and latitudinal treeline ecotones have not consistently responded to climate warming in the direction and/or magnitude predicted by climate alone, suggesting that non‐climatic mechanisms (e.g. biotic interactions) also mediate treeline range dynamics. Through a collaborative research approach, we assessed environmental conditions associated with pre‐dispersal insect cone granivory and how this biotic interaction may govern the reproductive potential, and therefore range dynamics, of spruce‐dominated treelines across northern Canada. Location: In all, 10 boreal forest treelines, tundra and alpine, from Yukon to Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Taxa: White spruce (Picea glauca [Moench] Voss), Black spruce (Picea mariana [Mill.] B.S.P.), Strobilomyia spp., Megastigmus spp. Methods: Treeline sites were assessed for presence and magnitude of pre‐dispersal seed granivory by insects along with viable seed availability. We quantified stand density metrics, organic layer depth and understorey vegetation composition at each location and, subsequently, incorporated those variables into generalized linear mixed models to establish predictors of granivory magnitude and viability of available seed. Results: Insect granivory was widespread across sites; however, site‐specific patterns of granivory were associated with increased moss cover and decreased shrub cover and stand density. While all black spruce‐dominated sites exhibited seed viability rates > 50%, the number of seeds produced per cone varied, suggesting that within‐site abiotic conditions and biotic interaction pressures limit successful colonization of novel environments in advance of seed dispersal. Main Conclusions: The modelled relationships between granivory, seed viability and environmental conditions represent an essential step towards generalizing how and when biotic interactions across subarctic treelines influence boreal tree range dynamics before seed dispersal. Connections between granivory magnitude and site‐level treeline characteristics (e.g. stand density, understorey vegetation) will provide a more comprehensive understanding of treeline range dynamics under continued climate change. Forest trees are the world's most important renewable natural resources in terms of their dominance among other biomasses and the diversity of molecules that they produce. Forest tree extractives include terpenes and polyphenols, widely recognized for their biological activity. These molecules are found in forest by-products, such as bark, buds, leaves, and knots, commonly ignored in forestry decisions. The present literature review focuses on in vitro experimental bioactivity from the phytochemicals of Myrianthus arboreus, Acer rubrum, and Picea mariana forest resources and by-products with potential for further nutraceutical, cosmeceutical, and pharmaceutical development. Although these forest extracts function as antioxidants in vitro and may act on signaling pathways involved in diabetes, psoriasis, inflammation, and skin aging, much still remains to be investigated before using them as therapeutic candidates, cosmetics, or functional foods. Traditional forest management systems focused on wood must evolve towards a holistic approach, allowing the use of these extractives for developing new value-added products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Transpiration is a globally important component of evapotranspiration. Careful upscaling of transpiration from point measurements is thus crucial for quantifying water and energy fluxes. In spatially heterogeneous landscapes common across the boreal biome, upscaled transpiration estimates are difficult to determine due to variation in local environmental conditions (e.g., basal area, soil moisture, permafrost). Here, we sought to determine stand‐level attributes that influence transpiration scalars for a forested boreal peatland complex consisting of sparsely treed wetlands and densely treed permafrost plateaus as land cover types. The objectives were to quantify spatial and temporal variability in stand‐level transpiration, and to identify sources of uncertainty when scaling point measurements to the stand‐level. Using heat ratio method sap flow sensors, we determined sap velocity for black spruce and tamarack for 2‐week periods during peak growing season in 2013, 2017 and 2018. We found greater basal area, drier soils, and the presence of permafrost increased daily sap velocity in individual trees, suggesting that local environmental conditions are important in dictating sap velocity. When sap velocity was scaled to stand‐level transpiration using gridded 20 × 20 m resolution data across the ~10 ha Scotty Creek ForestGEO plot, we observed significant differences in daily plot transpiration among years (0.17–0.30 mm), and across land cover types. Daily transpiration was lowest in grid‐cells with sparsely treed wetlands compared to grid‐cells with well‐drained and densely treed permafrost plateaus, where daily transpiration reached 0.80 mm, or 30% of the daily evapotranspiration. When transpiration scalars (i.e., sap velocity) were not specific to the different land cover types (i.e., permafrost plateaus and wetlands), scaled stand‐level transpiration was overestimated by 42%. To quantify the relative contribution of tree transpiration to ecosystem evapotranspiration, we recommend that sampling designs stratify across local environmental conditions to accurately represent variation associated with land cover types, especially with different hydrological functioning as encountered in rapidly thawing boreal peatland complexes. Key message: Black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) has historically self-replaced following wildfire, but recent evidence suggests that this is changing. One factor could be negative impacts of intensifying fire activity on black spruce seed rain. We investigated this by measuring black spruce seed rain and seedling establishment. Our results suggest that increases in fire activity could reduce seed rain meaning reductions in black spruce establishment. Context: Black spruce is an important conifer in boreal North America that develops a semi-serotinous, aerial seedbank and releases a pulse of seeds after fire. Variation in postfire seed rain has important consequences for black spruce regeneration and stand composition. Aims: We explore the possible effects of changes in fire regime on the abundance and viability of black spruce seeds following a very large wildfire season in the Northwest Territories, Canada (NWT). Methods: We measured postfire seed rain over 2 years at 25 black spruce-dominated sites and evaluated drivers of stand characteristics and environmental conditions on total black spruce seed rain and viability. Results: We found a positive relationship between black spruce basal area and total seed rain. However, at high basal areas, this increasing rate of seed rain was not maintained. Viable seed rain was greater in stands that were older, closer to unburned edges, and where canopy combustion was less severe. Finally, we demonstrated positive relationships between seed rain and seedling establishment, confirming our measures of seed rain were key drivers of postfire forest regeneration. When investigating relationships between species' niches and distributions, niches can be divided demographically, resulting in unique niches for different life stages. This approach can identify changing substrate requirements throughout a species' life cycle. Using non-metric multidimensional scaling, we quantified microsite conditions associated with successful recruitment in the tundra landscape and successful seed production amongst adult trees of black spruce (Picea mariana) at subarctic treeline in Yukon, Canada to assess how life stage-specific requirements may impact the distribution of this widespread boreal tree species. Treeline ecotones in this region showed high heterogeneity in tundra microsites available for establishment. Black spruce exhibited changing microsite associations from germination to reproductive maturity, which were mainly driven by changes in plant community and soil moisture. These associations limit the microsites where individuals can establish and reproduce to a subset available within the heterogeneous landscape. Overall, we suggest that (1) substrates suitable for early recruitment are limited at the range edge; and (2) reproductive adults have a narrow niche, limiting successful seed production in adults and forming sink populations where suitable conditions are limited. Our multivariate assessment of microsite suitability can provide valuable insights into the spatial distribution of a species throughout its life cycle and identify life stage-specific constraints to range expansion. Boreal forests are experiencing severe climatic changes that vary widely across the broad geographic distribution of the biome. The changes are greatest near the subarctic treeline where trees often exhibit high climatic sensitivity because climatic conditions approach the limits of their physiological tolerance. Despite the importance of subarctic boreal forests, the lack of field-acquired growth data remains a critical issue that limits the generalization of forest productivity models across the entire boreal biome. Using tree-ring chronologies from remote stands distributed along three latitudinal gradients ranging from 65 to 102°W, we investigated recent trends in black spruce growth and their relationships with recent climate warming near the subarctic treeline in eastern Canada. Our results show a generally positive effect of temperature and a negative effect of precipitation, both indicating that black spruce growth is temperature-limited near its northern range limit. However, we observed a strong gradient in temperature-growth coupling within a small latitudinal gradient (about one degree of latitude), where strong temperature constraints appear limited to the northernmost, coldest stands. Moreover, the positive growth response to temperature decreased from wetter to dryer sites and climate-growth coupling declined over the study period in the driest sites. These results suggest that the growth increase associated with warmer temperature may be limited by reduced precipitation and potential moisture limitation. Lastly, our results suggest that acute climatic events have the potential to induce abrupt shifts in tree climate-growth relationships. Such results indicate that the expected beneficial effect of warming on high latitude tree growth may be less generalized and more complex than previously thought in northeastern Canada, perhaps due to factors other than temperature, which might confound the climate-growth coupling southwards. Thus, our results highlight the need for a better understanding of additional growth drivers in these poorly studied regions and for physiologically informed definitions of acute climatic events, in order to refine broad-scale forest productivity modeling.

Boreal lichen woodlands (LWs) are stable low tree-density zones of the Canadian boreal forest whose afforestation has been proposed as a way to create new C sinks and thus mitigate climate change. Planting operations in these remote areas are however costly and time-consuming, and may not be necessary when soil scarification is followed by dense natural regeneration. In the present study, we assessed the natural regeneration potential and dynamics in six boreal LWs of Québec, Canada, 11 years after soil scarification. The number, size (height and stem diameter) and age of seedlings were measured in 2-4 sampling plots per site (18 plots in total). Our data show that scarification operations produced on average 1,400 m2 ha–1 of exposed mineral soil (scarification intensity of 14%) with, however, a large within-site variability. The natural regeneration was mainly composed of black spruce seedlings (> 95%), averaged ∼12,000 seedlings ha–1 across the six sites and significantly varied among sites, mostly due to the variation in scarification intensity. Seedling density averaged ∼9 seedlings m–2 of exposed mineral soil and increased with seed tree mean diameter at breast height (DBH) (R2 = 0.51; P < 0.05) but not with the density of seed trees, revealing the importance of old and large seed trees in natural regeneration success. Together, scarification intensity and the DBH of remaining seed trees explained ∼60% of the variation in natural regeneration density across the 18 sampled plots. The rate of establishment of seedlings was generally high – with on average 60% of the carrying capacity of the substrate being reached within three years following scarification – and increased with seed tree mean DBH (R2 = 0.77; P < 0.05). However, the growth rate of seedlings was very low. Eleven years after scarification, 60% of the seedlings were < 15 cm and the height of 10-yr-old seedlings averaged 27.5 cm. Thus, even though seedling establishment was successful, the biomass accumulated by the natural regeneration was negligible in the span of a decade. Therefore, the implementation of afforestation following scarification appears to be necessary to create significant C sinks in the midterm.
