13. Future scenarios of mixed reality

Abstract

INTUITION is a Network of Excellence that aims to integrate the European research efforts on the scientific and technological field of Virtual and Mixed Reality. To perform that, a series of activities have taken place in order to gather knowledge regarding actors and research profiles, projects and research results, products and patents. Having a clear view of research needs and technology trends the Network has envisioned the research goals that need to be pursued within the years to come. The starting point is a set of visionary scenarios which set out the picture for the technological and scientific advances that need to take place. Within this paper a set of indicative scenarios on a higher and descriptive level are provided and the way they contribute to the roadmap definition is explained. With this report we want to share these scenarios and our initial thoughts to stimulate a broader discussion and invite people from all relevant backgrounds to enter the knowledge creation process. The paper is a collective production of the INTUITION Consortium.

Abstract

Stereo displays suffer from crosstalk, an effect that reduces or even inhibits the viewer¿s ability to correctly fuse stereoscopic images. In this paper, three extensions for improved software crosstalk reduction are introduced. First, we propose a reduction method operating in CIELAB color space to find a perceptually better color match for crosstalk corrected pixels. Second, we introduce a geometry-based reduction method that operates on fused 3D pixels. Finally, a run-time optimization is introduced that avoids the need to process each pixel. We evaluated our CIELAB-based method using the Visible Differences Predictor (VDP). Our results show that we are able to significantly improve crosstalk reduction compared to previously used methods that operate in RGB color space. The combination of our methods provides an improved, real-time software crosstalk reduction framework, applicable to a wider range of scenes, delivering better quality, higher performance, and more flexibility.

18. Widget manipulation revisited : a case study in modeling interactions between experimental conditions

Abstract

Widgets are often used to perform control tasks in three-dimensional (3D) virtual environments (VEs). Spatial interactions through widgets require precise 3D manipulations, and several design aspects of VEs contribute to the ease, accuracy, and speed with which users can perform these interactions. Throughout the years, VE researchers have studied relevant design aspects; for example, the location and size of the widgets, monoscopic versus stereoscopic viewing, the presence or absence of co-location, or the inclusion of (passive) tactile feedback, are all design aspects that have been studied. However, researchers have mostly studied design aspects in isolation and have paid little attention to possible interactions between conditions. In this paper, we introduce a method for modeling interaction effects between experimental conditions and illus- trate it using data from a specific case study, i.e., widget manipulation tasks. More specifically, we model how the effect of passive tactile feedback interacts with stereoscopic viewing for three widget manipulation tasks. We also model how these effects vary between two tasks, i.e., button and menu item selection. Models that include inter- action effects between experimental conditions can be used to get a deeper understanding in the system design trade-offs of a virtual environment.

20. Spacing the boundary: An exploration of perforated virtual spaces

Abstract

This paper discusses the performative boundary between real and virtual spaces, as it constitutes itself based on the conditions, abilities, and potentials of Virtual Reality (VR). In addressing specific issues of the users' embodiment, the authors argue that one of the greatest challenges of VR is its capability to connect the virtual and the real; a potential that is considered as fundamentally spatial. The premises and conditions of the production of such an interfacing space are explored in relation to its underlying generative dynamic processes, the superimposition of real and virtual places, and their inhabitation. Joining the fields of interactive art and computer science, the authors' discussion unfolds based on two of their collaborative works: the CAVE environment Uzume (2002) and the tele-immersive installation Maa-Veil of Illusion (2004).

Abstract

Effective interaction in a virtual environment requires that the user can adequately judge the spatial relationships between the objects in a 3D scene. In order to accomplish adequate depth perception, existing virtual environments create useful perceptual cues through stereoscopy, motion parallax and (active or passive) haptic feedback. Specific hardware, such as high-end monitors with stereoscopic glasses, head-mounted tracking and mirrors are required to accomplish this. Many potential VR users however refuse to wear cumbersome devices and to adjust to an imposed work environment, especially for longer periods of time. It is therefore important to quantify the repercussions of dropping one or more of the above technologies. These repercussions are likely to depend on the application area, so that comparisons should be performed on tasks that are important and/or occur frequently in the application field of interest. In this paper, we report on a formal experiment in which the effects of different hardware components on the speed and accuracy of three-dimensional (3D) interaction tasks are established. The tasks that have been selected for the experiment are inspired by interactions and complexities, as they typically occur when exploring molecular structures. From the experimental data, we develop linear regression models to predict the speed and accuracy of the interaction tasks. Our findings show that hardware supported depth cues have a significant positive effect on task speed and accuracy, while software supported depth cues, such as shadows and perspective cues, have a negative effect on trial time. The task trial times are smaller in a simple fish-tank like desktop environment than in a more complex co-location enabled environment, sometimes at the cost of reduced accuracy

Das Fraunhofer IAO setzt in seiner Modellfabrik die Standardsoftware SAP r/3 als ERP-Lösung ein. Von hier aus gelang die direkte Anbindung an 6-Seiten-CAVE und Powerwall. Über eine eigenentwickelte Middleware kommuniziert R/3 mit der VR-Software Lightning, die die übermittelten Daten dann räumlich je nach Ausbaustufe auf 1 bis 6 Wände projiziert.

36. Retinal vein occlusion and the prevalence of lipoprotein abnormalities.

Abstract

Ninety-nine patients with retinal vein occlusion (40 with central, 59 with branch vein occlusion) were investigated for the prevalence of associated diseases for comparison with an age-matched control group. There was a significantly increased prevalence of hyperlipidaemia (p less than 0.001) and hypercholesterolaemia (p less than 0.001) in the group with branch retinal vein occlusion and of hyperlipidaemia (p less than 0.001) and hypercholesterolaemia (p less than 0.02) in the group with central retinal vein occlusion compared with controls. An increased prevalence of hypertriglyceridaemia (p less than 0.001) was also found in patients with central vein occlusion. Other associations were noted (hypertension and oestrogen therapy). Increased serum cholesterol concentrations were found in patients with central vein occlusion (p less than 0.05) and branch vein occlusion (p less than 0.001) compared with controls, and similar tendencies were noted for levels of LDL and HDL cholesterol. Patients with central vein occlusion also had raised levels of serum triglyceride (p less than 0.001) and VLDL-triglyceride (p less than 0.05). The occurrence of both central and branch vein occlusions may be associated with an increased prevalence of hyperlipidaemia and hypertension. Increase of serum lipids may contribute to the aetiology of vein occlusion by altering plasma viscosity or affecting platelet function. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

38. Bull's eye maculopathy with early cone degeneration.

Abstract

Seven patients with acquired cone degeneration were investigated. The initial visual acuities in 6 of the series were normal or near normal but later deteriorated, although they did not fall below 6/60 in any patient. All the patients tested had colour vision defects and abnormalities on electrodiagnostic testing referable to the cone system. The typical picture was of a bull's eye maculopathy accompanied by an annular scotoma around the fovea, but the clinical and electrophysiological investigations showed that there were considerable variations especially in the early stages. 39. Panretinal photocoagulation in central retinal vein occlusion: A randomised controlled clinical study.

Abstract

A randomised controlled study of photocoagulation compared with no treatment in central retinal vein occlusion is reported. Forty-eight patients were allocated into treated and control groups by a random procedure 3 months after their first visual symptoms. For the analysis they were subdivided into (1) ischaemic type, and (2) hyperpermeability-response macular-oedema type of central retinal vein occlusion. In neither group did treatment confer benefit as far as visual acuity was concerned. However, iris, disc, and retinal neovascularisation improved after treatment in the ischaemic group. In addition none of the treated patients progressed to neovascular glaucoma. Macular-oedema improved in treated patients with the hyperpermeability response, but the visual field was affected and atrophic changes at the macular precluded visual improvement. It is concluded that photocoagulation should be used only to prevent complications in the ischaemic type of central retinal vein occlusion. Abstract

The findings in iris fluorescein angiograms of 48 eyes with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) were correlated with the predominant retinal vascular response. In 24 eyes with the non-ischaemic type of CRVO there were no or only minimal iris vessel changes, whereas in all 24 eyes with ischaemic type of CRVO there was iris vessel dilatation and leakage with or without neovascularisation. These findings support the hypothesis that hypoxic retina may be a cause of rubeosis iridis in CRVO. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Three cases are described, and the advantages of this procedure as opposed to others available are discussed.
