Biosphere Futures (https://biospherefutures.net/) is a new online database to collect and discover scenario studies from across the world, with a specific focus on scenarios that explicitly incorporate interdependencies between humans and their supporting ecosystems. It provides access to a globally diverse collection of case studies that includes most ecosystems and regions, enabling exploration of the multifaceted ways in which the future might unfold. Together, the case studies illuminate the diversity and plurality of people’s expectations and aspirations for the future. The objective of Biosphere Futures is to promote the use of scenarios for sustainable development of the biosphere and to foster a community of practice around social-ecological scenarios. We do so by facilitating the assessment, synthesis, and comparative analysis of scenario case studies, pointing to relevant resources, and by helping practitioners and researchers to disseminate and showcase their own work. This article begins by outlining the rationale behind the creation of the database, followed by an introduction to its functionality and the criteria employed for selecting case studies. Subsequently, we present a synthesis of the first 100 case studies included in the scenarios database, highlighting emerging patterns and identifying potential avenues for further research. Finally, given that broader utilization and contributions to the database will enhance the achievement of Biosphere Futures’ objectives, we invite the creators of social-ecological scenarios to contribute additional case studies. By expanding the database’s breadth and depth, we can collectively foster a more nuanced understanding of the possible trajectories of our biosphere and enable better decision making for sustainable development.

[Resumen] Introducción: La obtención de un acceso vascular adecuado durante emergencias es crucial para la atención de pacientes críticos. Ante condiciones adversas la vía intraósea es una alternativa viable y rápida a la VVP que permite administrar rápidamente líquidos, sangre y fármacos con una alta tasa de éxito y mínimas complicaciones. Dado el aumento de emergencias sanitarias es fundamental conocer sus cuidados y el impacto que tiene tanto en el paciente, como en los profesionales sanitarios. Objetivo: Analizar el impacto de la vía intraósea en el ámbito de urgencias y emergencias prehospitalarias, así como los cuidados que están asociados a su uso, según la literatura. Metodología: Se llevó a cabo una revisión bibliográfica de tipo narrativo en cinco bases de datos de ciencias de la salud: Pubmed, Scopus, Cochrane Library Plus, CINAHL, y Web of Science. Se establecieron los criterios de selección y se siguió el diagrama de flujo PRISMA para la búsqueda y selección de artículos, además de una evaluación de la calidad según la escala JBI. Resultados: Se obtuvieron un total de 71 artículos, seleccionándose finalmente 12 tras descartar los duplicados, aplicar los criterios de inclusión y exclusión y la lectura del título, el resumen y el texto completo. Conclusión: El acceso intraóseo es crucial en emergencias en las que no es posible establecer una vía venosa, siendo especialmente útil en paros cardiacos, politraumatismos y grandes quemados, y pudiendo ser limitado por fracturas, infecciones, osteoporosis, etc. Los dispositivos EZ-IO, BIG, NIO y FAST son comunes, siendo la tibia y el húmero las zonas preferidas para su inserción y sus complicaciones son improbables y atribuibles a la inexperiencia. Evidénciase a súa subutilización e a necesidade de maior formación para mellorar as habilidades e o manexo desta vía., [Abstract] Introduction: Obtaining adequate vascular access during emergencies is crucial for the care of critical patients. Under adverse conditions, intraosseous access is a viable and rapid alternative to a peripheral line, allowing for the quick administration of fluids, blood, and drugs, with a high success rate and minimal complications. Given the increase in medical emergencies, it is essential to understand its care and the impact it has on both the patient and healthcare professionals. Objective: To analyze the impact of the intraosseous route in the field of prehospital emergencies and urgencies, as well as the associated care according to the literature. Methodology: A narrative literature review was conducted using five health science databases: Pubmed, Scopus, Cochrane Library Plus, CINAHL, and Web of Science. Selection criteria were established, and the PRISMA flow diagram was followed for article search and selection, along with quality assessment using the JBI scale. Results: A total of 71 articles were obtained, with 12 ultimately selected after removing duplicates, applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, and reviewing titles, abstracts, and full texts. Conclusion: Intraosseous access is crucial in emergencies where establishing a venous route is not possible, being especially useful in cardiac arrests, polytrauma, and severe burns, and may be limited by fractures, infections, osteoporosis, etc. EZ-IO, BIG, NIO and FAST devices are common, with the tibia and humerus being preferred insertion sites, and complications are unlikely and usually attributable to inexperience. Its underutilization and the need for further training to improve skills and management of this route are evident.

Mainstreaming of ecosystem service approaches has been proposed as one path toward sustainable development. Meanwhile, critics of ecosystem services question if the approach can account for the multiple values of ecosystems to diverse groups of people, or for aspects of inter- and intra-generational justice. In particular, an ecosystem service approach often overlooks power dimensions and capabilities that are core to environmental justice. This article addresses the need for greater guidance on incorporating justice into ecosystem services research and practice. We point to the importance of deep engagement with stakeholders and rights holders to disentangle contextual factors that moderate justice outcomes on ecosystem service attribution and appropriation in socio-political interventions. Such a holistic perspective enables the integration of values and knowledge plurality for enhancing justice in ecosystem services research. This broadened perspective paves a way for transformative ecosystem service assessments, management, and research, which can help inform and design governance structures that nourish human agency to sustainably identify, manage, and enjoy ecosystem services for human wellbeing.

Low-count monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis (MBLlo) has been associated with an underlying immunodeficiency and has recently emerged as a new risk factor for severe COVID-19. Here, we investigated the kinetics of immune cell and antibody responses in blood during COVID-19 of MBLlo versus non-MBL patients. For this study, we analyzed the kinetics of immune cells in blood of 336 COVID-19 patients (74 MBLlo and 262 non-MBL), who had not been vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2, over a period of 43 weeks since the onset of infection, using high-sensitivity flow cytometry. Plasma levels of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies were measured in parallel by ELISA. Overall, early after the onset of symptoms, MBLlo COVID-19 patients showed increased neutrophil, monocyte, and particularly, plasma cell (PC) counts, whereas eosinophil, dendritic cell, basophil, and lymphocyte counts were markedly decreased in blood of a variable percentage of samples, and with a tendency toward normal levels from week +5 of infection onward. Compared with non-MBL patients, MBLlo COVID-19 patients presented higher neutrophil counts, together with decreased pre-GC B-cell, dendritic cell, and innate-like T-cell counts. Higher PC levels, together with a delayed PC peak and greater plasma levels of anti-SARS-CoV-2-specific antibodies (at week +2 to week +4) were also observed in MBLlo patients. In summary, MBLlo COVID-19 patients share immune profiles previously described for patients with severe SARS-CoV-2 infection, associated with a delayed but more pronounced PC and antibody humoral response once compared with non-MBL patients.

Many challenges posed by the current Anthropocene epoch require fundamental transformations to humanity's relationships with the rest of the planet. Achieving such transformations requires that humanity improve its understanding of the current situation and enhance its ability to imagine pathways toward alternative, preferable futures. We review advances in addressing these challenges that employ systematic and structured thinking about multiple possible futures (futures-thinking). Over seven decades, especially the past two, approaches to futures-thinking have helped people from diverse backgrounds reach a common understanding of important issues, underlying causes, and pathways toward optimistic futures. A recent focus has been the stimulation of imagination to produce new options. The roles of futures-thinking in breaking unhelpful social addictions and in conflict resolution are key emerging topics. We summarize cognitive, cultural, and institutional constraints on the societal uptake of futures-thinking, concluding that none are insurmountable once understood.
