The introduction of low-loss optical fibers probably represents the single most important advance in the growth of our telecommunication system. To meet our needs for secure communications, it is likely that our classical network will soon be operating alongside what is known as a quantum network. The latter is very sensitive to loss and thus poses new constraints to the performance of current fiber components. In particular, recent quantum network prototypes underlined the absence of low-loss non-reciprocal fiber-based devices. Here, we present a solution to this issue by realizing low-loss (0.81 dB), broadband (at least 50 GHz bandwidth) and high-extinction (up to 27 dB) circulators, based on Mach-Zehnder interferometers including so-called fiber null-couplers. The latter are directional couplers, whose splitting-ratio can be controlled by launching acoustic waves along the coupling region. Fabricated from standard single-mode fibers and actuated electrically, these circulators can be made to fit any existing optical fiber networks and could turn out to be key for the transmission and processing of optically encoded quantum information., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Experiments based on cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) are widely used to study the interaction of a light field with a discrete frequency spectrum and emitters. More recently, the field of waveguide QED has attracted interest due to the strong interaction between propagating photons and emitters that can be obtained in nanophotonic waveguides, where a continuum of frequency modes is allowed. Both cavity and waveguide QED share the common goal of harnessing and deepening the understanding of light-matter coupling. However, they often rely on very different experimental set-ups and theoretical descriptions. Here, we experimentally investigate the transition from cavity to waveguide QED with an ensemble of cold atoms that is coupled to a fiber-ring resonator, which contains a nanofiber section. By varying the length of the resonator from a few meters to several tens of meters, we tailor the spectral density of modes of the resonator while remaining in the strong coupling regime. We demonstrate that for progressively longer resonators, the paradigmatic Rabi oscillations of cavity QED gradually vanish, while non-Markovian features reminiscent of waveguide QED appear.

Strong coupling between a single resonator mode and a single quantum emitter is key to a plethora of experiments and applications in quantum science and technology and is commonly described by means of the Jaynes-Cummings model. Here, we show that the Jaynes-Cummings model only applies when the cavity does not significantly change the emitter's emission rate into free-space. Most notably, the predictions made by the Jaynes-Cummings model become increasingly wrong when approaching the ideal emitter-resonator systems with no free-space decay channels. We present a Hamiltonian that provides, within the validity range of the rotating wave approximation, a correct theoretical description that applies to all regimes. As minimizing the coupling to free-space modes is paramount for many cavity-based applications, a correct description of strong light-matter interaction is therefore crucial for developing and optimizing quantum protocols., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

We discuss the evolution of the quantum state of an ensemble of atoms that are coupled via a single propagating optical mode. We theoretically show that the quantum state of N atoms, which are initially prepared in the timed Dicke state, evolves through all the N - 1 states that are subradiant with respect to the propagating mode. We predict this process to occur for any atom number and any atom-light coupling strength. These findings are supported by measurements performed with cold cesium atoms coupled to the evanescent field of an optical nanofiber. We experimentally observe the evolution of the state of the ensemble passing through the first two subradiant states, leading to sudden, temporary switch-offs of the optical power emitted into the nanofiber. We experimentally and theoretically investigate collective radiative effects in an ensemble of cold atoms coupled to a single-mode optical nanofiber. Our analysis unveils the microscopic dynamics of the system, showing that collective interactions between the atoms and a single guided photon gradually build-up along the atomic array in the direction of propagation of light. These results are supported by time-resolved measurements of the light transmitted and reflected by the ensemble after excitation via nanofiber-guided laser pulses, whose rise and fall times are shorter than the atomic lifetime. Superradiant decays more than one order of magnitude faster than the single-atom free-space decay rate are observed for emission in the forward-propagating guided mode, while at the same time no speed-up of the decay rate are measured in the backward direction. In addition, position-resolved measurements of the light that is transmitted past the atoms are performed by inserting the nanofiber-coupled atomic array in a 45-m long fiber ring-resonator, which allow us to experimentally reveal the progressive growth of the collective response of the atomic ensemble. The interaction of an ensemble of $N$ two-level atoms with a single mode electromagnetic field is described by the Tavis-Cummings model. There, the collectively enhanced light-matter coupling strength is given by $g_N = \sqrt{N} \bar{g}_1$, where $\bar{g}_1$ is the ensemble-averaged single-atom coupling strength. Formerly, this model has been employed to describe and to analyze numerous cavity-based experiments. Here, we show that this is only justified if the effective scattering rate into non-cavity modes is negligible compared to the cavity's free-spectral range. In terms of experimental parameters, this requires that the optical depth of the ensemble is low, a condition that is violated in several state-of-the-art experiments. We give quantitative conditions for the validity of the Tavis-Cummings model and derive a more general Hamiltonian description that takes into account the cascaded interaction of the photons with all consecutive atoms. We show that the predictions of our model can differ quantitatively and even qualitatively from those obtained with the Tavis-Cummings model. Finally, we present experimental data, for which the deviation from the predictions of the Tavis-Cummings model is apparent. We report on the observation of multimode strong coupling of a small ensemble of atoms interacting with the field of a 30-m long fiber resonator containing a nanofiber section. The collective light--matter coupling strength exceeds the free spectral range and the atoms couple to consecutive longitudinal resonator modes. The measured transmission spectra of the coupled atom-resonator system provide evidence of this regime, realized with a few hundred atoms with an intrinsic single-atom cooperativity of 0.26.
