Abstract

The neutron-rich isotopes of tungsten, osmium and platinum have different shapes in their ground states and present also shape transitions phenomena. Spectroscopic information for these nuclei is scarce and often limited to the gamma rays from the decay of isomeric states. For the neutron-rich even-even osmium isotopes 194Os and 198Os, a shape transition between a slightly prolate deformed to an oblate deformed ground state was deduced from the observed level schemes. For the even-even nucleus lying in between, 196Os, no gamma ray transition is known. In order to elucidate the shape transition and to test the nuclear models describing it, this region was investigated through gamma-ray spectroscopy using the AGATA demonstrator and the large acceptance heavy-ion spectrometer PRISMA at LNL, Italy. A two-nucleon transfer from a 198Pt target to a stable 82Se beam was utilized to populate medium-high spin states of 196Os. The analysis method and preliminary results, including the first life-time measurement of isomeric states with AGATA, are presented.

Abstract

International audience; The neutron-rich nucleus Pt200 is investigated via in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy to study the shape evolution in the neutron-rich platinum isotopes towards the N=126 shell closure. The two-neutron transfer reaction Pt198(Se82, Se80)Pt200 is used to populate excited states of Pt200. The Advanced Gamma Ray Tracking Array (AGATA) demonstrator coupled with the PRISMA spectrometer detects γ rays coincident with the Se80 recoils, the binary partner of Pt200. The binary partner method is applied to extract the γ-ray transitions and build the level scheme of Pt200. The level at 1884 keV reported by Yates et al. [S. W. Yates, E. M. Baum, E. A. Henry, L. G. Mann, N. Roy, A. Aprahamian, R. A. Meyer, and R. Estep, Phys. Rev. C 37, 1889 (1988)] was confirmed to be at 1882.1 keV and assigned as the (61+) state. An additional γ ray was found and it presumably deexcites the (81+) state. The results are compared with state-of-the-art beyond mean-field calculations, performed for the even-even 190−204Pt isotopes, revealing that Pt200 marks the transition from the γ-unstable behavior of lighter Pt nuclei towards a more spherical one when approaching the N=126 shell closure.

Abstract

International audience; The structure of the S33 nucleus was investigated in the Mg24(N14,αp) fusion-evaporation reaction using a 40-MeV N14 beam. The level scheme was extended up to an excitation energy of 11.7 MeV and spin 19/2+. Lifetimes of the intermediate- and high-spin states have been investigated by the Doppler shift attenuation method. Data were compared with different shell-model calculations where effective interactions involving two main shells, the sd and the fp, are used.

Abstract

The shape transition in the neutron-rich Os isotopes is studied by investigating the neutron rich 196Os nucleus through in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy using a two-proton transfer reaction from a 198Pt target to a 82Se beam. The beam-like recoils were detected and identified with the large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA and the coincident gamma rays were measured with the AGATA demonstrator. The de-excitation of the low-lying levels of the yrast-band of 196Os were identified for the first time. The results are compared with state-of-the-art beyond mean-field calculations, performed for the even-even 188, 198Os isotopes. The new results suggest a smooth transition in the Os isotopes from a more axial rotational behaviour towards predominately vibrational nuclei through triaxial configurations. An almost perfect gamma-unstable/triaxial rotor yrast-band is predicted for 196Os which is in agreement with the experimentally measured excited states.

Abstract

Lifetimes of low-lying excited states of the neutron-rich 44, 46Ar nuclei, populated via multinucleon transfer reactions, are measured by means of the differential recoil distance Doppler shift method. The extracted electromagnetic transition probabilities are compared with previous intermediate-energy Coulomb-excitation measurements and with large-scale shell-model calculations. The increase in the deduced B(E2 ; 2+→0+) transition probability from 44Ar to the closed-shell nucleus 46Ar contradicts the earlier results of Coulomb-excitation experiments. Shell-model calculations using different effective interactions agree with the new measured values.

Abstract

The lifetimes of the first excited states of the N=30 isotones 50Ca and 51Sc and the Z=18 isotopes 44-46Ar isotopes have been determined using a novel technique that combines the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift method with the CLARA-PRISMA spectrometers in multinucleon transfer reactions. The results allow determinination of the effective charges above 48Ca and test the strength of the N=28 magic number when moving away from the stability line.

Abstract

The neutron-rich Fe isotopes from A=61 to 66 were studied through multinucleon transfer reactions by bombarding a $^{238}$U target with a 400 MeV $^{64}$Ni beam. Unambiguous identification of prompt $\gamma$ rays belonging to each nucleus was achieved using coincidence relationships with the ions detected in a high-acceptance magnetic spectrometer. The new data extend our knowledge of the level structure of Fe isotopes, which is discussed in terms of the systematics of the region and compared with large-scale shell-model calculations.

Abstract

Deep-inelastic and multi-nucleon transfer reactions can be used to populate nuclei with relatively large neutron excess. Recently, at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, a setup consisting on an efficient gamma-ray detection system CLARA coupled to the large acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, capable of tracking the trajectories of the reaction products, has been assembled. Abstract

CLARA is an array of 25 Clover (EUROBALL type) Ge detectors, placed at the target position of the large acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA. Due to the granularity of the CLARA Ge array (100 crystals), the photopeak efficiency ( 3%) and the PRISMA large acceptance ( 80 msr, and 20% Δ p/p), the setup is an excellent tool to investigate the structure of neutron-rich nuclei, populated in multinucleon transfer reactions and deep inelastic collisions with stable beams. Since March 2004 the setup is fully operational, and since then several experiments have been performed, with beams delivered by the LNL XTU-Tandem and the ALPI linac. In this contribution the preliminary outcome of the first experiments is shown.

Abstract

: Lifetimes of excited states in 148Gd were measured using the recoil distance method with a plunger device coupled to the EUROBALL Ge detector array. The differential decay curve method in coincidence mode allowed the unambiguous determination of lifetimes of more than 20 excited states. The obtained transition strengths are in good agreement with the shell model calculations. The N=Z nucleus 64Ge has been investigated in two experiments using the EUROBALL III and EUROBALL IV spectrometers coupled to ancillary devices. Multipole mixing ratios, linear polarization and picosecond lifetimes for various transitions have been measured. Abstract: The lifetimes of the first excited states of the Z = 18 44Ar and 46Ar isotopes have been determined using a novel technique that combines the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift method with the CLARA-PRISMA spectrometers for Multinucleon Transfer Reactions.
