Harmful cyanobacteria blooms are a growing threat in estuarine waters as upstream blooms are exported into coastal environments. Cyanobacteria can produce potent toxins, one of which-hepatotoxic microcystins (MCs)-can persist and accumulate within the food web. Filter-feeding invertebrates may biomagnify toxins up to 100× ambient concentrations. As such, bivalves can be used as an environmentally relevant and highly sensitive sentinel for MC monitoring. To date there has been little research on cyanotoxin bioaccumulation in estuaries. The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta (Delta) aquatic food web has undergone a profound change in response to widespread colonization of aquatic invasive species such as Asian clams (Corbicula fluminea) in the freshwater portion of the Delta. These clams are prolific-blanketing areas of the Delta at densities up to 1000 clams/m2 and are directly implicated in the pelagic organism decline of threatened and endangered fishes. We hypothesized that Asian clams accumulate MCs which may act as an additional stressor to the food web and MCs would seasonally be in exceedance of public health advisory levels. MCs accumulation in Delta Asian clams and signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) were studied over a two-year period. ELISA and LC-MS analytical methods were used to measure free and protein-bound MCs in clam and crayfish tissues. We describe an improved MC extraction method for use when analyzing these taxa by LC-MS. MCs were found to accumulate in Asian clams across all months and at all study sites, with seasonal maxima occurring during the summer. Although MC concentrations rarely exceeded public health advisory levels, the persistence of MCs year-round still poses a chronic risk to consumers. Crayfish at times also accumulated high concentrations of MCs. Our results highlight the utility of shellfish as sentinel organisms for monitoring in estuarine areas.

Ecosystem engineers alter habitat and resource availability within ecosystems, but the magnitude of these effects depends on abiotic context and spatial scale. We examined how the effects of freshwater mussels, an ecosystem engineer, changed with spatial scale. We combined a field enclosure experiment and comparative field study to evaluate associations among mussels and macroinvertebrate communities across three spatial scales: mussel individuals (~ 0.01 m2), patches of mussels (0.25 m2), and large aggregations of many mussel patches (mussel beds, ~ 1000 m2). We used canonical correspondence analysis and variation partitioning to evaluate how mussel abundance, food availability, substrate heterogeneity, and flow influenced macroinvertebrate communities. We found that mussels' influence on macroinvertebrate communities differed among spatial scales. At the smallest scale, macroinvertebrate density increased on the shells of live mussels, likely due to mussel influences on food availability to grazers. At the patch scale, we found no mussel effects, likely because they were overridden by a flood event. At the mussel bed scale, macroinvertebrate communities were primarily controlled by flow and secondarily by food availability. As such, the continued loss of freshwater mussels means the loss of habitat creation and food provisioning for other aquatic groups, and alteration of facilitation landscapes within streams. A global inventory of extractive species mariculture in wave-exposed temperate waters shows that the longline is the technology used in more than 99% of the sites (Part 1 of this review). In this second part, I compare the static (longline at rest), quasi-static (tidal sea surface elevation, steady currents and mainline lifting operation) and dynamic (wind seas and swells) loading and motion of surface, semi-submerged and fully submerged longlines used to grow bivalves and kelp. This review is based on a hundred papers published on the subject mostly after 2010 and on simple analytical models used to illustrate the many compromises that must be made to ensure the survivability of the structure and the survival (retention), growth and quality of the cultured biomass. Surface longlines are unsuitable for fully exposed environments. To mitigate storm energy it is necessary to minimize the volume of surface buoys and submerge the mainline to the maximum depth possible. There is however a limit to minimizing the volume of surface buoys due to the uplifting of the mainline by currents. In the case of kelp, its optimal growing depth is within a few meters from the sea surface. This limitation can be partly circumvented by having the kelp float above the mainline. In the case of bivalves, mainline depth can be tens of meters below the sea surface. This comes with some disadvantages including difficulties in maintaining the delicate buoyancy balance, particularly for fully submerged longlines without legs, and reduced access to the mainline, particularly for fully submerged longlines with legs. Devices that allow autonomous or remote-controlled changes of mainline depth on a daily, occasional (husbandry and harvest operations) or seasonal basis have been tested but are not yet used commercially on longlines. Dinophysistoxin 1 (DTX1, 1) and okadaic acid (OA, 2) , produced by the dinoflagellates Dinophysis spp. and Prorocentrum spp. are primary diarrhetic shellfish toxins (DSTs), which may cause gastric illness in people consuming such as bivalves. Both compounds convert to dinophysistoxin 3 (DTX3, 3 ; generic name for 1 and 2 with fatty acids conjugated at 7-OH) in bivalves. The enzyme okadaic acid O -acyl transferase (OOAT) is a membrane protein found in the microsomes of the digestive glands of bivalves. In this study, we established an in vitro enzymatic conversion reaction using 4-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole (NBD)-OA (4), an OA derivative conjugated with (R)-(-)-4-nitro-7-(3-aminopyrrolidin-1-yl)-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole (NBD-APy) on 1-CO2H, as a substrate. We detected the enzymatically produced 3 , NBD-7- O -palmitoyl-OA (NBD-Pal-OA), using high-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection. High-frequency recordings of valve opening behavior (VOB) in bivalves are often used to detect changes in environmental conditions. However, generally a single variable such as temperature or the presence of toxicants in the water is the focus. A description of routine VOB under non-stressful conditions is also important for interpreting responses to environmental changes. Here we present the first detailed quantitative investigation of the in-situ VOB of eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) to environmental variables typically not considered stressful. The VOB of eight individuals was monitored for seven weeks in a Louisiana estuary. We examined the relationships between VOB metrics (variance in mean % max opening among oysters, the probability of an oyster being closed, and the rate of valve closure), and temperature, salinity, chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentration, the rate of change in those environmental variables, and the rate of change in water depth. Relationships were analyzed through statistical models including rates of change over 0, 0.25, 1-, 6-, 12-, and 24-hours. All the responses were best explained by the 12-hour time step model. The interaction effect between salinity and the rate of change of salinity had the greatest impact on variance in oysters' behavior. Oysters closed faster at higher salinities and were more likely to be closed at lower chl-a concentrations. Significant interactions were found between many environmental variables, indicating a high level of complexity of oyster behavior in the natural environment. This study contributes to a better understanding of the impact of environmental conditions on oyster behavior and can help inform predictive tools for restoration initiatives and fisheries practices. Recent changes in climate and environment, influenced by both global and local factors, have had profound impacts on coastal ecosystem functioning and trajectories. By examining archived samples from ongoing ecological monitoring efforts, particularly focusing on bivalves like mussels and oysters, we gain a valuable long-term perspective on how ecosystems are responding at various scales. We conducted analyses on carbon and nitrogen elemental and isotopic ratios (C:N, δ13C, δ15N) of mussel and oyster soft tissues collected annually at 33 sites along the French coast from 1981 to 2021. This extensive dataset (https://doi.org/10.17882/100583 , Liénart et al., 2024a) offers a comprehensive view spanning multiple decades and ecosystems, allowing to track how coastal ecosystems and marine species record changing climate, physical-chemical environments and organic matter cycles. Additionally, these data are crucial for establishing isotope baselines for studying food webs. Introduction: Coastal marine ecosystems, are particularly susceptible to climate change. One such threat is atmospheric heatwaves, which are predicted to increase in frequency, duration, and intensity. Many intertidal organisms already live at the edge of their thermal tolerance limits and heatwaves can outstretch an organism's ability to compensate in the short term. In June 2021 the Pacific Northwest region of North America, including the Salish Sea, experienced a significant atmospheric heatwave during some of the lowest tides of the year. This was followed by numerous reports of dead and dying intertidal marine organisms region-wide. A semi-quantitative rapid assessment found a range of both species- and location-specific effects but generally recorded widespread negative impacts to intertidal shellfish species across the Salish Sea. Methods: Following these results, we opportunistically analyzed data collected by intertidal bivalve resource managers from the region. These datasets allowed us to examine regional density and size data for clam and oyster populations before and after the heatwave to increase our quantitative understanding of heatwave effects. Results: We found a range of responses including positive and negative effects of the heatwave on clam and oyster density. While we generally found small changes in bivalve size, some site-species combinations displayed large shifts in size frequency. Many of our analyses did not indicate even moderate statistical support, even with large changes in the mean, driven in part by high variability in the data. Time intervals between surveys, ranging from 2 to over 25 months, had little effect on observed variability indicating that any heatwave-induced effects may be masked by variability inherent to the population ecology and/or survey methodology. Discussion: This analysis has highlighted the need for intertidal resource managers, and the greater research community, to consider alternative survey approaches designed to constrain variability in order to detect the effects of acute or extreme events. With the effects of climate change predicted to become more intense, targeted survey approaches may be needed to detect the effects and implications of such events and to continue effective management of intertidal bivalves in the Salish Sea and worldwide. Bathymodioline mussels dominate deep-sea methane seep and hydrothermal vent habitats and obtain nutrients and energy primarily through chemosynthetic endosymbiotic bacteria in the bacteriocytes of their gill. However, the molecular mechanisms that orchestrate mussel host-symbiont interactions remain unclear. Here, we constructed a comprehensive cell atlas of the gill in the mussel Gigantidas platifrons from the South China Sea methane seeps (1100 m depth) using single-nucleus RNA-sequencing (snRNA-seq) and whole-mount in situ hybridisation. We identified 13 types of cells, including three previously unknown ones, and uncovered unknown tissue heterogeneity. Every cell type has a designated function in supporting the gill's structure and function, creating an optimal environment for chemosynthesis, and effectively acquiring nutrients from the endosymbiotic bacteria. Analysis of snRNA-seq of in situ transplanted mussels clearly showed the shifts in cell state in response to environmental oscillations. Clams belonging to the genus Panopea, part of the Hiatellidae family, are distributed in temperate seas and represent valuable fishing resources in most of the regions where they inhabit. These bivalves tend to aggregate on sandy and/or muddy substrates, exhibiting temporal variations in their abundance, or more precisely, in their detectability. Traditionally, monitoring of panopea populations has relied on autonomous diving, which poses safety limitations in terms of depth and duration of diving. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of the low-cost remote video method known as ‘Toki’ for evaluating and monitoring Panopea abbreviata in the San Matías Gulf. Abundance observations were analyzed using generalized additive mixed models, incorporating temperature, depth, sampling date, and image quality as covariates. We observed a differential pattern in the abundance of P. abbreviata, with peaks occurring during October and May, in contrast to previous reports for other species within the same genus. Notably, the variation in abundance exceeded that reported for the same species in previous studies. In agreement with prior research, we found significantly higher densities of P. abbreviata on sandy substrates. ‘Toki’ proved to be an effective tool, enabling the coverage of extensive areas effortlessly and within a short timeframe. Its key advantages include accessibility to greater depths and minor time constraints than associated with diving, especially at depths below 25 m. Moreover, this technique provides a permanent record that can be subsequently utilized for additional purposes. It is worth noting that the entire procedure was conducted from a small boat, using manual operations, resulting in relatively low costs and enhanced operational convenience. When bivalve aquaculture production relies on natural recruitment, yields may decline due to density‐independent constraints at multiple life stages. These life stage transitions include larval settlement, which is typically variable with rapid losses of newly settled individuals and the additional mortality from predation or abiotic factors (e.g., temperature, desiccation, and physical disturbance) as the bivalves grow. Recruitment monitoring and outplants were used to evaluate the potential limiting factors affecting different life stages in two nonnative clam species, Manila clams, Ruditapes philippinarum, and softshell clams, Mya arenaria in Willapa Bay, Washington, USA. Recruits (250–500 µm) did not differ in cumulative abundance in 2023 relative to prior years of monitoring (five recruitment seasons between 2011 and 2017). Recruits surviving to the end of the summer represented 12% or less of those that had arrived, but still showed spatial patterns consistent with rates of arrival. Manila clams outplanted across an elevation gradient suffered high mortality below mean lower low water regardless of size class (small: 8 mm and large: 20 mm), where native rock crabs (Cancer productus) were abundant. Clam growth declined at higher tidal elevations consistent with inundation time. European green crabs (Carcinus maenas) were relatively abundant at midtidal levels where commercial clam aquaculture typically occurs in the bay and where small clams were particularly reduced without predator protection from mesh. While these data support that green crabs may be reducing survival of 1‐year‐old clams at midintertidal elevations, they also identify earlier bottlenecks to repopulating commercial clam beds, which point out why seeding clams is used to maintain consistent production. Further exploration is needed before green crabs can be singled out as a new limit on clam yields relative to the roles of predation across the size classes of clams in Willapa Bay. Mussels (Mytilus spp.) are abundant in the North Atlantic, sessile, and sensitive to environmental change, and suitable as sentinels of environment and climate change of costal ecosystems. We aimed to determine the baseline for the Northeast Atlantic (58–70°N) Mytilus species complex, and to show the present distribution to surveys conducted 60 years ago. Baseline was obtained by investigating a total of 509 stations in the intertidal zone, in four regions comprising the environmental gradient from head of fjord to coast, and distributed over the latitudinal gradient from 58 to 70°N. The baseline shows a range in continuous abundance of mussels from 12% to 36%, patchy abundance from 26% to 57% and no or very limited mussel abundance from 26% to 46% between the four regions. The presence of mussels in the southeast and west region was visualized to previous surveys conducted 60 years ago. The data points to similar past and present presence of mussels in both regions, yet past major mussel fields in the inner section of region southeast was not detected in this study. The baseline of Mytilus spp. in the Northeast Atlantic (58–70°N) is now available for future reference. The baseline, plotted to surveys conducted 60 years ago, points to awareness of the population situated in the southeast section of the investigated region. In freshwater ecosystems, consumers can play large roles in nutrient cycling by modifying nutrient availability for autotrophic and heterotrophic microbes. Nutrients released by consumers directly support green food webs based on primary production and brown food webs based on decomposition. While much research has focused on impacts of consumer driven nutrient dynamics on green food webs, less attention has been given to studying the effects of these dynamics on brown food webs.Freshwater mussels (Bivalvia: Unionidae) can dominate benthic biomass in aquatic systems as they often occur in dense aggregations that create biogeochemical hotspots that can control ecosystem structure and function through nutrient release. However, despite functional similarities as filter‐feeders, mussels exhibit variation in nutrient excretion and tissue stoichiometry due in part to their phylogenetic origin. Here, we conducted a mesocosm experiment to evaluate how communities of three phylogenetically distinct species of mussels individually and collectively influence components of green and brown food webs.We predicted that the presence of mussels would elicit a positive response in both brown and green food webs by providing nutrients and energy via excretion and biodeposition to autotrophic and heterotrophic microbes. We also predicted that bottom‐up provisioning of nutrients would vary among treatments as a result of stoichiometric differences of species combinations, and that increasing species richness would lead to greater ecosystem functioning through complementarity resulting from greater trait diversity.Our results show that mussels affect the functioning of green and brown food webs through altering nutrient availability for both autotrophic and heterotrophic microbes. These effects are likely to be driven by phylogenetic constraints on tissue nutrient stoichiometry and consequential excretion stoichiometry, which can have functional effects on ecosystem processes. Our study highlights the importance of measuring multiple functional responses across a gradient of diversity in ecologically similar consumers to gain a more holistic view of aquatic food webs. The global spread of non-native species is leading to an increasing frequency of multiple co-occurring non-native species. We examined the co-occurrence of the bivalve mollusc Dreissena polymorpha (zebra mussel) with three Ponto-Caspian amphipods (Dikerogammarus villosus, Dikerogammarus haemobaphes, and Chelicorophium curvispinum) across England and Wales in association with in-situ substrate size. For all three amphipod species, substrate grain size where amphipods co-occurred with D. polymorpha was significantly finer than when recorded in isolation. Subsequently, we confirmed this via aquarium experiments. We examined the occurrence of D. villosus with D. polymorpha when present with cobbles, gravel, or sand from three population sources (co-location with abundant D. polymorpha populations, co-location with low populations, and naïve). Experiments demonstrated that D. villosus actively sought shelter on or near D. polymorpha, with their co-location being significantly more prevalent in finer grained substrates (sand > gravel > cobble). The strength of this co-location differed by population source, with those co-located with high D. polymorpha densities demonstrating a greater association. Our analyses and experiments indicate that D. polymorpha may facilitate Ponto-Caspian amphipod establishment in otherwise suboptimal locations, whereby mussel shells provide favourable structural habitat for the amphipods, analogous to the presence of coarse-grained benthic sediment. The Croatian Natural History Museum (CNHM) houses rich fossil collections from the Neogene deposits of Northern Croatia, comprising numerous scallops (Bivalvia: Pectinidae). During the Middle Miocene (Badenian = Langhian and early Serravallian), this region was located at the southwestern margin of the Central Paratethys. The value of the CNHM's historical collections has been presented through taxonomic revisions and biostratigraphic, paleoenvironmental and paleogeographic study. Methods included the cross-checking of specimens from museum boxes with all available published data, systematic revision of scallops, recording the abundance of each taxon, defining the preservation state of the specimens, measuring the morphometric elements and taking photographs of each specimen. After the conducted revision of 624 specimens, the number of registered taxa in the collections was reduced from 52 to 33, and their stratigraphic distribution has been updated. The species Lissochlamys excisa (Bronn, 1831) has been recorded for the first time at the southwestern part of the Central Paratethys. The southernmost Badenian record of Delectopecten vitreus (Gmelin, 1791) known so far has been described. Six types of pectinid habitats have been distinguished, based on the provided paleontological and lithological data, also estimating the scallops' abundance in each of them. The present work provides an updated and corrected list of hosts for the five European species of pinnotherid crabs, taking into consideration all recent published works as well as new data obtained in the present study. In relation to the number of hosts, there are two groups of species, one composed by Pinnotheres pisum and Afropinnotheres monodi with the highest number of hosts, and a second group, with a reduced number of hosts and more specific taxa, consisting of three other species: Nepinnotheres pinnotheres, Pinnotheres bicristatus, and P. pectunculi. When studying the relationships between host preferences, host distributions, and pea crab distributions, we could not find a clear direct relationship between these parameters. Temperature is also probably an important influence and relevant factor responsible for the distribution of pinnotherid crabs, and this may be independent from the potential distribution due to the distribution of hosts. Studies of the energy metabolism in a bivalve mollusk, the ark clam Anadara kagoshimensis (Tokunaga, 1906), were carried out for the first time under experimental conditions simulating dynamic variations in the seawater characteristics at the stages of development and end of upwelling event in the Black Sea. It was shown that the level of energy metabolism of A. kagoshimensis, while being in the zone of upwelling formation, decreased, on average, by 5% per degree of temperature decrease. During the upwelling relaxation phase (14 → 26°C), the restoration of the respiration intensity parameters of the clam was slower than expected, with a temperature coefficient of Q10 = 1.31. The acidification of the seawater by 1.0 (up to рН 7.2), combined with a temperature decrease (26 → 20°C), aggravated the negative effect by 25–45%. It has been found that the clam A. kagoshimensis reduces energy expenditure by approximately 60% under upwelling conditions (cold stress and acidification). The consequences of the negative effect of a sharp temperature variation lead to a delay in the metabolism recovery to normal values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context: Owing to the multiple functions of lipids and fatty acids in organisms, lipid composition can be used as an environmental biomarker of the health status of sentinel organisms in monitoring studies of aquatic ecosystems. Aims: To study the lipid profile of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis from the Black Sea and to identify lipid compounds as environmental biomarkers. Methods: Lipid and fatty acid compositions in the gills and digestive glands of mussels were analysed by chromatography. Key results: Membrane-state fatty acid indices in phospholipids were quite stable in all the mussels examined. The fatty acid composition of triacylglycerols is primarily an indicator of the food source for mussels. The selective retention of arachidonic acid as well as the accumulation of non-methylene-interrupted fatty acids in mussels are assumed to be biomarkers of environmental stress. Conclusions: The presence of regulatory mechanisms ensuring the stability of the membrane structure was confirmed in all studied mussels. Implications: The content of minor phospholipid fractions (namely, phosphatidylinositol and sphingomyelin) and the distribution of some fatty acids and their indices among lipid classes in the gills and digestive glands of M. galloprovincialis can be used in the assessment of the health status of sentinel organisms. The lipid composition depends on the mussel size; small mussels have an elevated content of main lipid classes. Bivalves have mechanisms to regulate the fatty acid composition of membrane lipids, including maintenance of a constant unsaturation degree of phospholipid fatty acids. Selective retention of arachidonic acid as well as accumulation of non-methylene-interrupted fatty acids in mussels are assumed to be biomarkers of environmental stress. This study is based on a natural experiment carried out in the Biebrza National Park, Poland. The study site was a channel inhabited by Anodonta anatina, A. cygnea, Unio pictorum and U. tumidus. The deepening of the channel to restore ecosystem connectivity provided an opportunity to conduct this study. Mussels were collected before dredging, held in captivity for 48 h, measured, individually tagged and released post-dredging to the same 5-m channel sections they originated from. They were subsequently monitored for three consecutive years. Mussel survival remained high throughout the study, and no increased mortality in the year following reintroduction was observed. There was no growth retardation. Mussel mobility was low, with most individuals remaining in the same channel section in which they were released. Recolonisation patterns were consistent with the composition of mussel communities in adjacent unaffected habitats. Although dredging drastically changes mussel habitat, some characteristics: microclimate, water chemistry, nutrient availability and host fish can remain adequate. Our study shows that reintroducing mussels to the same site can serve as an effective mitigation conservation measure and can be preferable to translocation, particularly when carried out under time pressure with limited possibilities of assigning appropriate destination sites. Background: In bivalves, the rate at which organisms grow is a major functional trait underlying many aspects of their commercial production. Growth is a highly polygenic trait, which is typically regulated by many genes with small to moderate effects. Due to its complexity, growth variability in such shellfish remains poorly understood. In this study, we aimed to investigate differential gene expression among spat of the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera with distinct growth phenotypes. Results: We selected two groups of P. margaritifera spat belonging to the same F2 cohort based on their growth performance at 5.5 months old. Transcriptome profile analysis identified a total of 394 differentially expressed genes between these Fast-growing (F) and Slow-growing (S) phenotypes. According to functional enrichment analysis, S oysters overexpressed genes associated with stress-pathways and regulation of innate immune responses. In contrast, F oysters up-regulated genes associated with cytoskeleton activity, cell proliferation, and apoptosis. Analysis of genome polymorphism identified 16 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) significantly associated with the growth phenotypes. SNP effect categorization revealed one SNP identified for high effect and annotated for a stop codon gained mutation. Interestingly, this SNP is located within a gene annotated for scavenger receptor class F member 1 (SRF1), which is known to modulate apoptosis. Our analyses also revealed that all F oysters showed up-regulation for this gene and were homozygous for the stop-codon mutation. Conversely, S oysters had a heterozygous genotype and a reduced expression of this gene. Conclusions: Altogether, our findings suggest that differences in growth among the same oyster cohort may be explained by contrasted metabolic allocation between regulatory pathways for growth and the immune system. This study provides a valuable contribution towards our understanding of the molecular components associated with growth performance in the pearl oyster P. margaritifera and bivalves in general. Mollusc shells are among the most abundant and well-preserved organisms in sediments worldwide, but their shells are usually subject to fragmentation due to exposure time in the TAZ, which compromises their preservation potential. The shell strength of valves from life and death assemblages from the sandy beaches of Santa Clara (37°50′49″S, 57°30′16″W) and Mar Chiquita (37°44′45″S, 57°25′1.5″W) on the Bonaerense coast, southwest Atlantic Argentina, was analysed to capture the effect of taphonomic processes over time and to determine how intrinsic properties and taphonomic variables influence their shell strength. To achieve this, the mechanical resistance profile of the bivalve Eucallista purpurata was assessed using point load and microindentation tests, and the mineralogical composition and organic matter content of the shell, as well as morphological variables, were measured. We concluded that, as expected, shells from life assemblages were more resistant to compression than those from death assemblages, but surprisingly, right valves were more resistant to compression than left valves in both Mar Chiquita and Santa Clara death assemblages. The "hologenome" concept is an increasingly popular way of thinking about microbiome-host for marine organisms. However, it is challenging to track hologenome dynamics because of the large amount of material, with tracking itself usually resulting in damage or death of the research object. Here we show the simple and efficient holo-2bRAD approach for the tracking of hologenome dynamics in marine invertebrates (i.e., scallop and shrimp) from one holo-2bRAD library. The stable performance of our approach was shown with high genotyping accuracy of 99.91% and a high correlation of r > 0.99 for the species-level profiling of microorganisms. To explore the host-microbe association underlying mass mortality events of bivalve larvae, core microbial species changed with the stages were found, and two potentially associated host SNPs were identified. Overall, our research provides a powerful tool with various advantages (e.g., cost-effective, simple, and applicable for challenging samples) in genetic, ecological, and evolutionary studies. Holo-2bRAD allows cost-effective and stable tracking of hologenome dynamics in marine invertebrates, also for difficult samples. ABSTRACT The introduction of invasive species has become an increasing environmental problem in freshwater ecosystems due to the high economic and ecological impacts it has generated. This systematic review covers publications from 2010 to 2020, focusing on non‐native invasive freshwater bivalves, a particularly relevant and widespread introduced taxonomic group in fresh waters. We collected information on the most studied species, the main objectives of the studies, their geographical location, study duration, and type of research. Furthermore, we focused on assessing the levels of ecological evidence presented, the type of interactions of non‐native bivalves with other organisms and the classification of their impacts. A total of 397 publications were retrieved. The studies addressed a total of 17 species of non‐native freshwater bivalves; however, most publications focused on the species Corbicula fluminea and Dreissena polymorpha, which are recognised for their widespread distribution and extensive negative impacts. Many other non‐native invasive bivalve species have been poorly studied. A high geographical bias was also present, with a considerable lack of studies in developing countries. The most frequent studies had shorter temporal periods, smaller spatial extents, and more observational data, were field‐based, and usually evaluated possible ecological impacts at the individual and population levels. There were 94 publications documenting discernible impacts according to the Environmental Impact Classification for Alien Taxa (EICAT). However, 41 of these publications did not provide sufficient data to determine an impact. The most common effects of invasive bivalves on ecosystems were structural alterations, and chemical and physical changes, which are anticipated due to their role as ecosystem engineers. Despite a considerable number of studies in the field and advances in our understanding of some species over the past decade, long‐term data and large‐scale studies are still needed to understand better the impacts, particularly at the community and ecosystem levels and in less‐studied geographic regions. The widespread distribution of several non‐native freshwater bivalves, their ongoing introductions, and high ecological and economic impacts demand continued research. Systematic reviews such as this are essential for identifying knowledge gaps and guiding future research to enable a more complete understanding of the ecological implications of invasive bivalves, and the development of effective management strategies. In this study, we employed geometric morphometrics (GMs) to analyze the shell shape differences among two mass-selected strains of bay scallops (red shell strain (RS) and black shell strain (BS)) and a control group (CG). The results revealed distinct shell shape differences corresponding to shell coloration, with the black shell strain displaying a more elliptical shell compared to the red shell strain. Additionally, the umbonal angle of the red shell strain was smaller than that of the black shell strain, indicating that the black shell strain had a more favorable jet direction that could enhance swimming capabilities. To evaluate the model's performance in practical applications, leave-one-out cross-validation was carried out on the two shell strains and one control group. The results demonstrated discrimination accuracy rates of 67.44%, 47.62%, and 68.18% for the BS strain, RS strain, and CG, respectively. Similarly, for the right valves, the discrimination accuracy rates were 62.79%, 50.00%, and 75.00% for the BS strain, RS strain, and CG, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Meretrix, a popular marine bivalve, features several species with significant ecological and commercial value, distributed in various marine habitats worldwide. Despite their importance, accurate global population estimates of these species are hindered by inadequate classification frameworks that often rely on external shell characteristics, which are susceptible to environmental influences. This limitation underscores the necessity for comprehensive research into the physiological and molecular attributes of these species for accurate identification. This study focused on identifying the local Meretrix species from Tarakan Island by analyzing their COI nucleotide sequences and comparing them with reference sequences in the BOLD and GenBank databases. The results demonstrate that the 14 specimens obtained with diverse morphological variations were found only within two major groups: Meretrix meretrix and Meretrix lusoria. These findings validate the efficacy of DNA barcoding as a tool for classifying marine bivalves, offering a robust framework for identifying unknown species, particularly in the Asian marine ecosystems. Fish production from natural resources has been facing countless challenges, primarily pollution, excessive fishing effort, unlawful gathering of fish fry in addition to food accessibility. Suez Canal lakes, Bitter and Timsah lakes are among the essential lakes in Egypt, producing commercial species with a mean annual fish production of 4000 tons (2005-2021). In the last 17 years, a severe decline in the fish production from the Suez Canal lakes was recorded. Fishery statistics of the Suez Canal lakes were collected from 2005 to 2021 to track the total catch, bivalve catch, and fishing effort during that period. Sediment and water samples were collected at 24 stations around the Great Bitter and Timsah lakes during 2022 and 2023. The grain size analyses designated that the bottom sediments of the Suez Canal lakes were principally composed of sand, with minor ingredients of gravel and mud. The concentration of heavy metals revealed that Fe has the highest concentration in the water and sediments of both lakes, while that of Cd was the lowest. The soft tissues of 105 individuals of Paphia undulata (Born, 1778), 100 individuals of P. textile (Gmelin, 1791) and 200 individuals of Donax trunculus (Linnaeus, 1758) from Lake Timsah were used for assessing heavy metal concentrations. Results showed that the concentration of all metals in the soft edible parts of the considered bivalve species were within the safe levels, except for lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) that recorded higher levels than the permissible ones. A production model was used to evaluate the fishery status of the studied species in the Bitter and Timsah lakes. Based on the results, the main reasons for the production depletion of the studied species in the Suez Canal lakes are the overfishing and pollution. Bivalves play a key role in aquatic ecosystems and are a valuable commercial resource. The prosperity of these aquatic organisms depends mainly on the effectiveness of their immune defense, in which the hemolymph plays a central role. Hemolymph may be used as an effective non-lethal criterion of health. However, the predictive value of hemolymph analysis depends on the comparison between the obtained results and reference data from healthy individuals living in natural aquatic environments. We collected hemolymph from 15 commercially important species from wild populations at stations located in non-impacted and impacted water areas of the Sea of Japan. Of the 11 hemolymph parameters we analyzed, the total hemocyte count, percentage of hemocyte types, phagocytic activity, presence of reactive oxygen species, and protein concentration differed significantly between populations from non-impacted and impacted water areas. The most responsive species to pollution were Magallana gigas, Crenomytilus grayanus, Mizuhopecten yessoensis, and Mactra chinensis. This work is the first to examine a large number of commercially important species simultaneously. Paphia textile is an economically important bivalve cultured in southeastern China. The feet, as the main edible part of P. textile, vary in color from white to orange. Previous studies have suggested that the orange feet of P. textile contain higher levels of carotenoids than the white feet, but the kinds of carotenoids are not known. The pigments identified in this study can facilitate further analysis of their underlying molecular mechanism and enable the breeding of P. textile with high carotenoid content. The pigments were extracted from the orange feet of P. textile by an acetone extraction method, and then, the extracted pigments were analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Moreover, the MS analysis was carried out with an electrospray ionization (ESI) source in the positive (ESI+) and negative (ESI-) ion modes. A total of 47 substances were detected, including 9 terpenoids, 7 amino acids and peptides, 13 lipids, 9 organic acids, 2 types of vitamin A and 7 other substances. Furthermore, β-doradecin (3'-hydroxy-3,4-diketo-β-carotene) was identified as the main pigment in the feet. This is the first report of the presence of β-doradecin, a type of carotenoid, in bivalves. The freshwater mussels (Bivalvia: Unionida) of the biodiversity hotspot Sundaland are experiencing severe anthropogenic threats, whilst their diversity and distribution remain poorly understood. Here, we present the first modern-day data on Unionida diversity and distribution across western Borneo. Mussels were surveyed and collected in the upper Kapuas and Pawan river basins in West Kalimantan, Indonesia, and the Sambas Besar, Sarawak and Batang Sadong river basins in Sarawak, Malaysia. DNA sequencing (COI  + 16S +  ND1  + 18S + 28S) and morphological analyses were conducted to delineate and identify species, and reconstruct phylogenetic relationships and population genetics. Specimens belonged to six native genera and nine species, of which seven are endemic to Borneo and three are new to science, i.e. Ctenodesma mawonae Zieritz et al. sp. nov. Sarawak basin, and Ctenodesma bersinara Zieritz et al. sp. nov. and Rectidens lauris Zieritz et al. sp. nov. both Pawan basin. The monotypic genera Caudiculatus and Discomya were phylogenetically highly divergent from other known Gonideinae taxa, potentially indicating a separate tribe (for Caudiculatus) and subfamily (for Discomya). In addition, we report new records of the non-native Sinanodonta pacifica Heude, 1878 in the Batang Sadong and Kapuas river basins. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We describe a high‐diversity silicified assemblage of marine molluscs (Pelsa‐Vazzoler Lagerstätte) from the upper Ladinian of the Agordo Dolomites (northeastern Italy). New data on the Triassic rebound, after the end‐Permian mass extinction, constrain it to an interval of relatively stable climatic conditions. This Lagerstätte, in the Sciliar Formation, yields a structure comparable to the famous lower Carnian San Cassiano Lagerstätte and suggests that the radiation of benthic molluscs may have occurred as early as the late Middle Triassic. We classified more than 4800 Cassian‐type molluscs, measuring abundance distributions of 109 species, including one new family (Rhaetidiidae), three new genera (Pelsia, Gaetania, Agordozyga) and 21 new species: Grammatodon egortinus, Modiolus friesenbichlerae, Myoconcha busattae, Schizogonium letiziae, Predazzella? monarii, Eucycloscala nitida, Tricolnaticopsis elongatus, Cortinella stricta, Triadoskenea alpicornu, Trachynerita tenuicostata, Coelostylina civettae, Gaetania coronata, Agordozyga caprina, Euthystylus dincae, Zygopleura elongata, Diatrypesis agordina, Cryptaulax pelsae, Pseudoscalites karapunari, Promathildia gracile, Camponaxis ladinica and Striactaeonina ingens. In this fauna, associated with tropical carbonate platforms, epifaunal filter‐feeding bivalves adopted new antipredatory features and gastropods conquered new ecospace, including parasitism and microcarnivory on sponges and scleractinian corals. Small size was an advantage in an ecosystem of small, isolated patch reefs. This is how, where and when caenogastropod and heterobranch snails (groups that today dominate global marine diversity) began their rise in the marine benthos. The origins of some evolutionary innovations that are key to our understanding of the time and place of the Mesozoic Marine Revolution, are therefore pushed back to the Middle Triassic. The Indian black clam Villorita cyprinoides Gray, 1825, is an economically valuable estuarine bivalve that faces challenges from multiple stressors and anthropogenic pressures. However, limited genomic resources have hindered molecular investigations into the impact of these stressors on clam populations. Here, we have generated the first transcriptomic reference datasets for V. cyprinoides to address this knowledge gap. A total of 25,040,592 and 22,486,217 million Illumina paired-end reads generated from two individuals were assembled using Trinity and rnaSPAdes. From the 47,607 transcripts identified as Coding Domain Sequences, 37,487 returned positive BLAST hits against six different databases. Additionally, a total of 14,063 Single Sequence Repeats were identified using GMATA. This study significantly enhances the genetic understanding of V. cyprinoides, a potential candidate for aquaculture that supports the livelihoods of many people dependent on small-scale fisheries. The data generated provides insights into broader genealogical connections within the family Cyrenidae through comparative transcriptomics. Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are enzymes involved in phase II of detoxification metabolism and could be used as biomarkers for water pollution. This study aims to determine heavy metal concentrations in the soft tissue of the mangrove clam Geloina expansa, as well as the expression of GSTs in the species. The acid digestion method was used to digest the samples, followed by a standard USEPA 6010B procedure using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) to measure the heavy metal contents in the samples. GST enzyme activity was measured using 1-chloro-2, 4-dinitrobenzene (CDNB) as substrate. One-way ANOVA was performed to compare the mean values of heavy metal concentration, protein concentration, enzyme activity, and specific activity. There was a significant difference (p<0.05) for Zn, total protein, and specific activity in G. expansa, but no significant difference in Pb, Cu and enzyme activity. GST enzyme activities were estimated at 0.16 ± 0.01 µmol/min, with a protein content of 1.24 ± 0.04 mg. The specific activity for GST was 0.13 ± 0.01 µmol/ min/mg, calculated as the ratio of enzyme activity to the total protein. GST-specific activity positively correlates with Pb concentration in the soft tissue of G. expansa. Detailed studies on the effects of pollution on the expression of GST need to be further investigated for the future use of this species as an efficient biomarker model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Limnoperna fortunei (L. fortunei) (Dunker, 1857), the golden mussel, is an invasive species possessing exceptional environmental adaptability and a destructive impact on water systems and artificial structures. To better conservation of freshwater ecosystems by controlling this mussel, it is essential to study its distribution, potential for invasion, environmental tolerance and biological traits.This paper outlines the distribution of L. fortunei in Asia and South America, as well as its potential for future invasion in freshwater habitats, along with the research methods employed.We find that the mussel had a temperature tolerance range of 8–35 °C and a pH range was 5–10, with some individuals surviving in extreme conditions for extended periods.We find that temperature was a decisive factor for success at reproductive stages, larval development and adult growth.The biological traits of L. fortunei are discussed, focusing on feeding habits, attachment characteristics and locomotion, with an emphasis on byssus structure, foot proteins and adhesion mechanisms. The study elucidates the impact of flow velocity, light exposure and substrate material on their attachment, with the optimal attachment being identified at a flow velocity of 0.3–0.9 m/s. Additionally, the mussel exhibits strong light avoidance performances and a preference for rough surfaces.Extensively‐researched control strategies are classified and summarized, primarily categorized into physical, chemical and biological control, with an outline of their respective strengths and limitations. This article discusses the decline of parasitic freshwater mussel populations and the need for conservation methods, particularly captive breeding, to reintroduce and protect these species. The focus is on the Depressed River Mussel (Pseudanodonta complanata), which is classified as vulnerable. The article presents a novel method for the long-term housing and husbandry of P. complanata, inspired by an outdoor mesocosm system used in Virginia, USA. The method involves creating a lake-like ecosystem with natural food sources for the mussels, reducing the reliance on nutrient-rich water or expensive custom food mixtures. The Eocene was a typical greenhouse climate period in the history of the Earth, with a high global sea level and extensive carbonate deposits developed in Tethys. During the Eocene, a carbonate platform was deposited in the western Tarim Basin, which belongs to the easternmost Tethys. However, the details of this carbonate platform and its complications for paleoecology and paleoclimate are still unclear. This research focuses on the bivalve-bearing carbonates of the Kalataer Formation in the western Tarim Basin, and detailed analyses of microfacies, biostratigraphy, paleoecology, and sea-level change were carried out. The bivalves of the Kalataer Formation are dominated by the Ostrea (Turkostrea) strictiplicata, Ostrea (Turkostrea) cizancourti, Ostrea (Turkostrea) strictiplicata, Ostrea (Turkostrea) strictiplicata, and Sokolowia buhsii, and the age is middle Lutetian of the Eocene. The biota of the Kalataer Formation mainly lives in open shallow sea environments, with medium to low energy and rich nutrients and oxygen, representing a typical shallow marine ecosystem of the carbonate platform. Microfacies and paleoecology indicate a large marine transgression event occurred in the western Tarim Basin during the middle Eocene. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chamid bivalves are marine organisms that live in high-energy environments and are cemented to hard substrates. To avoid shell damage, the organisms form thick, densely ornamented shells. Shell material consists of aragonite, and the ornamentation may be either aragonitic or calcitic. The latter can be developed as scaly spines, rows of blades, or comarginal, radial arched lamellae. We investigated biological crystal morphology and mode of assembly of Chama arcana and Chama gryphoides shells. Structural characteristics were obtained from electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) measurements, complemented with laser confocal and BSE imaging. We found a wide range of crystal morphologies and sizes, ranging from irregularly shaped calcite and/or aragonite prisms to tiny and thin aragonite laths. We observed four different modes of crystal assembly patterns: 1. strongly interlocked dendritic calcite units forming the ornamentation blades; 2. aragonite laths arranged to lamellae forming the outer shell layer, the layer adjacent to the calcite; 3. aragonite laths arranged into blocks comprising inner shell layers or aragonitic ornamentations; and 4. shell portions consisting of aragonite prisms, structured in size and crystal orientation, at muscle attachment sites. These four different types of crystal arrangements were observed for the shells of the investigated chamid species; however, they had slightly different strengths of structuring and slight variations in crystal organisation. Additionally, we observed unique microstructural features in Chama shells: We report ornamentation crystals resembling idiomorphic calcite and novel, twinned entities found at the changeover between the aragonitic layers. Abstract Background In bivalves, the rate at which organisms grow is a major functional trait underlying many aspects of their commercial production. Growth is a highly polygenic trait, which is typically regulated by many genes with small to moderate effects. Due to its complexity, growth variability in such shellfish remains poorly understood. In this study, we aimed to investigate differential gene expression among spat of the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera with distinct growth phenotypes. Results We selected two groups of P. margaritifera spat belonging to the same F2 cohort based on their growth performance at 5.5 months old. Transcriptome profile analysis identified a total of 394 differentially expressed genes between these Fast-growing (F) and Slow-growing (S) phenotypes. According to functional enrichment analysis, S oysters overexpressed genes associated with stress-pathways and regulation of innate immune responses. In contrast, F oysters up-regulated genes associated with cytoskeleton activity, cell proliferation, and apoptosis. Analysis of genome polymorphism identified 16 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) significantly associated with the growth phenotypes. SNP effect categorization revealed one SNP identified for high effect and annotated for a stop codon gained mutation. Interestingly, this SNP is located within a gene annotated for scavenger receptor class F member 1 (SRF1), which is known to modulate apoptosis. Our analyses also revealed that all F oysters showed up-regulation for this gene and were homozygous for the stop-codon mutation. Conversely, S oysters had a heterozygous genotype and a reduced expression of this gene. Conclusions Altogether, our findings suggest that differences in growth among the same oyster cohort may be explained by contrasted metabolic allocation between regulatory pathways for growth and the immune system. This study provides a valuable contribution towards our understanding of the molecular components associated with growth performance in the pearl oyster P. margaritifera and bivalves in general.

Biofouling constitutes one of the main obstacles in the sector of shellfish farming. Under this perspective, it is of highly importance to critically combine the updated information regarding the invasive potential of ascidian species, together with the factors contributing toward these events. The biological features of each species in relation to the gathering of the main non-indigenous species in the Mediterranean basin represent the first step toward mitigation of negative effects of the phenomenon. Further, there are limited studies investigating the physiological changes of bivalves caused by biofouling while leading to an increase in stress biomarkers. In the present review, the major ascidian species negatively affecting bivalve culture in the Mediterranean Sea are presented, alongside monitoring of ascidians from four Greek mussel farming locations as typical mussel culture cases. Among the main ascidian species, Styela plicata, Clavelina oblonga, Ciona robusta, Aplidium sp., Didemnum sp., Botryllus schlosseri, and Didemnum drachi are included, with the last three being the most harmful for this aquaculture sector. Based on the existing literature and research conducted so far, future research directions are proposed, in an effort to effectively control or efficiently manage ascidian biofouling organisms. Overall, perspectives toward the way we manage the biofouling phenomenon, such as the use of ascidian’s by-products in feedstuffs, chemical and pharmaceutical industry, or their incorporation in bivalve co-culture and integrated multi-trophic aquaculture systems represent promising alternative approaches.

Modern bivalves display a latitudinal life history gradient (LLHG): tropical bivalves tend to grow fast and die young, whereas mid- and high-latitude bivalves typically grow more slowly and may live much longer. Environmental factors such as temperature and seasonal food availability, both of which affect metabolic rates, are thought to be partially responsible for this pattern. Given that temperature influences life histories, we predict that the expression of individual life history gradients should vary over time with changes in global climate. Here, we use internal growth increments to constrain lifespans and growth rates in populations of Glycymeris americana and Glycymeris subovata along the Pliocene and Pleistocene Atlantic continental shelf of North America. We find that G. americana was long-lived (up to 93 years) and follows the expected pattern of longer life and slower growth at higher latitudes, whereas the shorter-lived (up to 36 years) G. subovata does not. G. americana life history data lend preliminary support for a change in the slope of the LLHG from the Pliocene to the Pleistocene. While G. americana is currently living along the U.S. Atlantic Coast, we were unable to obtain sufficient samples for our analysis; this represents a future area of research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Mediterranean mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis, is a significant marine bivalve species that has ecological and economic importance. This species is robustly resilient and highly invasive. Despite the scientific and commercial interest in studying its biology and aquaculture, there remains a need for a high-quality, chromosome-scale reference genome. In this study, we have assembled a high-quality chromosome-scale reference genome for M. galloprovincialis. The total length of our reference genome is 1.41 Gb, with a scaffold N50 sequence length of 96.9 Mb. BUSCO analysis revealed a 97.5% completeness based on complete BUSCOs. Compared to the four other available M. galloprovincialis assemblies, the assembly described here is dramatically improved in both contiguity and completeness. Etheria elliptica is a freshwater oyster that produces an adhesive that hardens underwater, allowing them to attach to other oysters, rocks, wood, and other natural substrates, producing complex oyster bed communities. Despite the importance of the adhesive in oyster bed formation, little is known about its chemical composition, structure, or mechanical properties. Through a combination of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x‐ray photoemission electron microscopy (X‐PEEM), infrared (IR) spectroscopy, microhardness testing, and nanoindentation, it is found that the oyster adhesive consists entirely of aragonite nanoparticles that clump together into crystallites of varied shape, size, and orientation. The crystallite clumping density varies from the exterior of the adhesive to the interior, with the adhesive closest to the prismatic layer generally being denser. With this variation in density comes a variation in material properties with the exterior adhesive layer being softer and more flexible and the interior adhesive layer being harder and less elastic, or more similar to the prismatic and nacre shell structures produced by the E. elliptica. Chemical treatment has been found to be the most economical and effective management strategy for controlling invasive mollusc populations and preventing their further spread. However, chemical treatments must maximize Asian clam mortality while minimizing the impacts on water quality and non-target species. Although there are numerous treatments on the market, they are not widely applied in the field. A comprehensive review of Asian clam molluscicides was performed to evaluate the efficacy of currently available chemical treatments and the toxicity ranges of emerging treatments. A comprehensive review of Asian clam chemical treatments used in natural open-water systems was performed to evaluate molluscicides and identify the toxicity ranges of emerging treatments that maximize Asian clam mortality and minimize the negative impact on water quality and non-target species. The pregnane X receptor (PXR) is a nuclear hormone receptor that plays a pivotal role in regulating gene expression in response to various ligands, particularly xenobiotics. In this context, the aim of this study was to shed light on the ligand affinity and functions of four NR1J1 paralogs identified in the marine mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, employing a dual-luciferase reporter assay. To achieve this, the activation patterns of these paralogs in response to various toxins, including freshwater cyanotoxins (Anatoxin-a, Cylindrospermopsin, and Microcystin-LR, -RR, and -YR) and marine algal toxins (Nodularin, Saxitoxin, and Tetrodotoxin), alongside natural compounds (Saint John's Wort, Ursolic Acid, and 8-Methoxypsoralene) and microalgal extracts (Tetraselmis, Isochrysis, LEGE 95046, and LEGE 91351 extracts), were studied. The investigation revealed nuanced differences in paralog response patterns, highlighting the remarkable sensitivity of MgaNR1J1γ and MgaNR1J1δ paralogs to several toxins. In conclusion, this study sheds light on the intricate mechanisms of xenobiotic metabolism and detoxification, particularly focusing on the role of marine mussel NR1J1 in responding to a diverse array of compounds. Furthermore, comparative analysis with human PXR revealed potential species-specific adaptations in detoxification mechanisms, suggesting evolutionary implications. The microbiological monitoring of bivalve mollusk harvesting areas in the Marche region is based on the parameters of Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. However, Regulation EU/2019/627 stated criteria based on E. coli only to determine the health status of these areas. Therefore, the reason for Salmonella spp. monitoring, as provided in the Marche region, could be aimed at reducing the risk of placing on the market contaminated bivalve mollusks. This study, using the results of microbiological monitoring carried out in the Marche region from 2015 to 2022 and the methods based on Bayes' theorem and Poisson's distribution, evaluated the effectiveness and efficiency of Salmonella spp. monitoring in reducing the risk to the consumer. The results show that i) the use of a single sample unit significantly reduced the possibility of detecting non-compliance with the microbiological safety criterion; ii) the time taken to report positive results (average of approximately 10 days) did not allow the timely implementation of control measures; iii) the prevalence of positive outcomes was quite sporadic: a random trend of positivity is recognizable on a geographical and monthly basis for mussels and a geographical basis for striped clams; iv) considering the predictive value of E. coli against Salmonella spp., the specificity is very high and the negative predictive value versus Salmonella spp. would be >80%. In conclusion, the study shows that the monitoring of Salmonella spp. has a limited effect on reducing the risk to the consumer; however, in the cost/benefit assessment, other aspects not covered by this study should be considered. The Astartidae (Bivalvia) are a common benthic fossil in the British Lower Jurassic and as such it is important to understand their taxonomy so as to use them as a study system with which to consider environmental change through, and extinction events in, this epoch. The majority of the species of the Astartidae from the British Lower Jurassic are taxa within the subfamily Astartinae, encompassing the genera Neocrassina, Coelastarte and Oxyeurax. There has been some question as to whether those shells attributed to Neocrassina could be further split, with two species assigned to this genus having some characters that are atypical. We prefer to retain the atypical species within ? Neocrassina , the genus with which they have the greatest affinity, rather than erect another genus. This study assigns the suite of British Lower Jurassic fossil bivalves attributed to Nicaniella to Oxyeurax , based on the presence of a poorly defined 3a tooth and form of commarginal ridge ornament. Differentiation at the species level in Astartinae is complicated; the subfamily exhibits generally low disparity compared with other bivalves, compounded by ecomorphological effects and, in some cases, sexual dimorphism. We show that the Neocrassina lineage exhibits gradual changes in shape, as well as hinge plate development and complexity, through the Lower Jurassic, and identify potential sexual dimorphism in species of Oxyeurax. The temporally overlapping species of Oxyeurax display varying degrees of ornamental development which may well be environmentally controlled and are used in this study to define distinct new species. This study recognizes 12 distinct species of Astartinae from the British Lower Jurassic. Nine are established taxa (Neocrassina elegans, N. expansa, N. gueuxii, N. lurida, N. phaedra , ? N. camertonensis , ? N. dentilabrum, Oxyeurax duplicata, O. striatosulcata), whilstthree are new species (Coelastarte wardenensis, O. mickletonensis and Oxyeurax thompsoni). Only two of the British Lower Jurassic Astartinae species appear to have survived the global Early Toarcian extinction event as represented in British successions; one Neocrassina and one Oxyeurax. Macoma calcarea, one of the most common bivalves in the infauna of the Arctic seas of Russia, is still poorly investigated from an ecological viewpoint. We studied the distribution and growth of Macoma in the southwestern part of the Kara Sea. The samples were obtained at 119 stations at depths from 4 to 415 m in 2012–2013. The main trends in the distribution of this species corresponded to its feeding type (deposit‐feeder), the biogeographic affiliation and the features of reproductive ecology. Macoma calcarea in the study area were mainly concentrated at depths of 20–50 m. Their density and biomass were, respectively, eight and two times higher on silty sediments than on sandy ones. The results of age assessment of M. calcarea by the external growth marks and the shell cross‐sections were quite similar. However, age determination based on internal growth marks was found to be preferable for older individuals and individuals with heavily eroded shells. Group growth rate of M. calcarea was not very sensitive to environmental conditions. No site‐to‐site variability in the growth characteristics was found. The maximum size and age of M. calcarea (37 mm and 21 years respectively), as well as the average annual growth rate (about 2 mm/year), were close to the values of these parameters in other parts of the distribution of this species. This article presents data on lithology, biostratigraphy, and molluscan paleontological characteristics of the Lower Volgian–Upper Ryazanian interval of the Yanov Stan Formation obtained from the core of the Novoyakimovskaya-1 parametric well. The formation consists of mudstone-siltstone intercalation with rare sandstone beds and numerous levels with carbonate concretions. For the first time, abundant glendonites are reported from the Yanov Stan Formation, including stratigraphic intervals from which they have not been previously known. An almost complete 290-m core of the Yanov Stan Formation with abundant ammonites and bivalves was obtained. This enabled us to develop a detailed biostratigraphic zonation of the section based on ammonites and bivalves. The following succession of ammonite zones, known in Western Siberia and, mainly, in Eastern Siberia (from bottom to top), was established: Paravirgatites lideri, Pavlovia iatriensis, Dorsoplanites ilovaiskii, D. maximus, Epivirgatites variabilis, Praechetates exoticus, Craspedites okensis, Praetollia maynci, Hectoroceras kochi, and Surites subanalogus. The bivalve succession, distinguished based on the members of the genus Buchia, includes the following Buchiazones: Buchia mosquensis, B. unschensis, B. okensis, ?B. jasikovi, and B. volgensis. The molluscan assemblages of the studied core, starting at least from the upper Middle Volgian, are similar to the coeval assemblages from the eastern part of the Yenisei–Khatanga depression and the Laptev Sea coast but differ from those from Western Siberia. This suggests the existence of some environmental factors that prevented the free distribution of mollusks from the western part of the Yenisei–Khatanga depression into the West Siberian basin.
