We experimentally report on the detection of chaos from a free-running commercial broad-area VCSEL without the need for external perturbation such as optical feedback, injection or current modulation. The evolution of nonlinear dynamics leading to chaotic behavior is studied, and the system's complexity is characterized using chaos titration and correlation dimension. We experimentally study the synchronization of chaos generated by semiconductor lasers in a cascade injection configuration, i.e., a tunable master laser is used to generate chaos by optical injection in a transmitter laser that injects light into a receiver laser. Chaos synchronization between the transmitter and the receiver lasers is achieved with a correlation coefficient of 90 % for a measurement bandwidth up to 35 GHz. Two parameter regions of good synchronization are found, corresponding to the alignment of the oscillation frequencies of the receiver laser with either the transmitter laser or the master laser., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

We experimentally investigate spatio-temporal lasing dynamics in semiconductor microcavities with various geometries, featuring integrable or chaotic ray dynamics. The classical ray dynamics directly impacts the lasing dynamics, which is primarily determined by the local directionality of long-lived ray trajectories. The directionality of optical propagation dictates the characteristic length scales of intensity variations, which play a pivotal role in nonlinear light-matter interactions. While wavelength-scale intensity variations tend to stabilize lasing dynamics, modulation on much longer scales causes spatial filamentation and irregular pulsation. Lima\c{c}on-shaped microdisk lasers are promising on-chip light sources with low lasing threshold and unidirectional output. We conduct an experimental study on the lasing dynamics of Lima\c{c}on-shaped semiconductor microcavities. The edge emission exhibits intensity fluctuations over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. They result from multiple dynamic processes with different origins and occurring on different spatiotemporal scales. The dominant process is an alternate oscillation between two output beams with a period as short as a few nanoseconds., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

Nonlinear optics is a rapidly growing field that has found a wide range of applications. A major limitation, however, is the demand of high power, especially for high-order nonlinearities. Here, by reconfiguring a multiple-scattering system, we introduce 'structural nonlinearity' via a nonlinear mapping between the scattering potential and the output light. Experimentally we demonstrate high-order, tunable nonlinearities at low power. The multiply-scattered light features enhanced intensity fluctuations and long-range spatial correlations. The flexibility, robustness and energy efficiency of our approach provides a versatile platform for exploring structural nonlinearities for various applications.

Lasers can exhibit nonlinear and chaotic dynamics driven by the interaction of multiple lasing modes, and investigating the different scenarios of mode competition and bifurcations of their dynamics is of great interest on a fundamental level as well as in view of applications. We study the dynamics of a broad-area vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) in solitary continuous-wave operation with a comprehensive investigation of its polarization state, lasing spectra, near-field distributions, and temporal dynamics. Fluctuations at the frequency of birefringence splitting and other frequency components develop in a series of bifurcations. The bifurcations coincide with changes of the transverse lasing modes and/or the polarization state, demonstrating the importance of both the spatial and polarization degrees of freedom for mode competition. As a consequence, the inherent nonlinear dynamics of broad-area VCSELs is significantly more complex than the dynamics of VCSELs with a single spatial mode., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures

The ray dynamics of optical cavities exhibits bifurcation points: special geometries at which ray trajectories switch abruptly between stable and unstable. A prominent example is the Fabry-Perot cavity with two planar mirrors, which is widely employed for broad-area semiconductor lasers. Such cavities support lasing in a relatively small number of transverse modes, and the laser is highly susceptible to filamentation and irregular pulsations. Here we demonstrate experimentally that a slight deviation from this bifurcation point (planar cavity) dramatically changes the laser performance. In a near-planar cavity with two concave mirrors, the number of transverse lasing modes increases drastically. While the spatial coherence of the laser emission is reduced, the divergence angle of the output beam remains relatively narrow. Moreover, the spatio-temporal lasing dynamics becomes significantly more stable compared to that in a Fabry-Perot cavity. Our near-planar broad-area semiconductor laser has higher brightness, better directionality and hence allows shorter integration times than an incandescent lamp while featuring sufficiently low speckle contrast at the same time, making it a vastly superior light source for speckle-free imaging. Furthermore, our method of controlling spatio-temporal dynamics with extreme sensitivity near a bifurcation point may be applied to other types of high-power lasers and nonlinear dynamic systems., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures

We report on experiments with M\"obius strip microlasers which were fabricated with high optical quality by direct laser writing. A M\"obius strip, i.e., a band with a half twist, exhibits the fascinating property that it has a single nonorientable surface and a single boundary. We provide evidence that, in contrast to conventional ring or disk resonators, a M\"obius strip cavity cannot sustain whispering gallery modes (WGM). Comparison between experiments and 3D finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations reveals that the resonances are localized on periodic geodesics.

Random numbers are widely used for information security, cryptography, stochastic modeling, and quantum simulations. Key technical challenges for physical random number generation are speed and scalability. We demonstrate a method for ultrafast generation of hundreds of random bit streams in parallel with a single laser diode. Spatio-temporal interference of many lasing modes in a specially designed cavity is introduced as a scheme for greatly accelerated random bit generation. Spontaneous emission, caused by quantum fluctuations, produces stochastic noise that makes the bit streams unpredictable. We achieve a total bit rate of 250 terabits per second with off-line post-processing, which is more than two orders of magnitude higher than the current post-processing record. Our approach is robust, compact, and energy efficient with potential applications in secure communication and high-performance computation.

We present experimental and numerical studies of broad-area semiconductor lasers with chaotic ray dynamics. The emission intensity distributions at the cavity boundaries are measured and compared to ray tracing simulations and numerical calculations of the passive cavity modes. We study two different cavity geometries, a D-cavity and a stadium, both of which feature fully chaotic ray dynamics. While the far-field distributions exhibit fairly homogeneous emission in all directions, the emission intensity distributions at the cavity boundary are highly inhomogeneous, reflecting the non-uniform intensity distributions inside the cavities. The excellent agreement between experiments and simulations demonstrates that the intensity distributions of wave-chaotic semiconductor lasers are primarily determined by the cavity geometry. This is in contrast to conventional Fabry-Perot broad-area lasers for which the intensity distributions are to a large degree determined by the nonlinear interaction of the lasing modes with the semiconductor gain medium.

We investigate experimentally and theoretically the lasing behavior of dielectric microcavity lasers with chaotic ray dynamics. Experiments show multimode lasing for both D-shaped and stadium-shaped wave-chaotic cavities. Theoretical calculations also find multimode lasing for different shapes, sizes and refractive indices. While there are quantitative differences between the theoretical lasing spectra of the stadium and D-cavity, due to the presence of scarred modes with anomalously high quality factors, these differences decrease as the system size increases, and are also substantially reduced when the effects of surface roughness are taken into account. Lasing spectra calculations are based on Steady-State Ab Initio Laser Theory, and indicate that gain competition is not sufficient to result in single-mode lasing in these systems., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

The optical memory effect has emerged as a powerful tool for imaging through multiple-scattering media; however, the finite angular range of the memory effect limits the field of view. Here, we demonstrate experimentally that selective coupling of incident light into a high-transmission channel increases the angular memory-effect range. This enhancement is attributed to the robustness of the high-transmission channels against perturbations such as sample tilt or wavefront tilt. Our work shows that the high-transmission channels provide an enhanced field of view for memory effect-based imaging through diffusive media.

We design and fabricate an on-chip laser source that produces a directional beam with low spatial coherence. The lasing modes are based on the axial orbit in a stable cavity and have good directionality. To reduce the spatial coherence of emission, the number of transverse lasing modes is maximized by fine-tuning the cavity geometry. Decoherence is reached in a few nanoseconds. Such rapid decoherence will facilitate applications in ultrafast speckle-free full-field imaging.

We present an experimental study of the effects of temporal modulation of the pump intensity on a random laser. The nanosecond pump pulses exhibit rapid intensity fluctuations which differ from pulse to pulse. Specific temporal profiles of the pump pulses produce extraordinarily strong emission from the random laser. This process is deterministic and insensitive to the spatial configuration of the scatterers and spontaneous emission noise.

The invention of lasers 60 years ago is one of the greatest breakthroughs in modern optics. Throughout the years, lasers have enabled major scientific and technological advancements, and have been exploited in numerous applications due to their advantages such as high brightness and high coherence. However, the high spatial coherence of laser illumination is not always desirable, as it can cause adverse artifacts such as speckle noise. To reduce the spatial coherence, novel laser cavity geometries and alternative feedback mechanisms have been developed. By tailoring the spatial and spectral properties of cavity resonances, the number of lasing modes, the emission profiles and the coherence properties can be controlled. This review presents an overview of such unconventional, complex lasers, with a focus on their spatial coherence properties. Laser coherence control not only provides an efficient means for eliminating coherent artifacts, but also enables new applications.

Spatio-temporal instabilities are widespread phenomena resulting from complexity and nonlinearity. In broad-area edge-emitting semiconductor lasers, the nonlinear interactions of multiple spatial modes with the active medium can result in filamentation and spatio-temporal chaos. These instabilities degrade the laser performance and are extremely challenging to control. We demonstrate a powerful approach to suppress spatio-temporal instabilities using wave-chaotic or disordered cavities. The interference of many propagating waves with random phases in such cavities disrupts the formation of self-organized structures like filaments, resulting in stable lasing dynamics. Our method provides a general and robust scheme to prevent the formation and growth of nonlinear instabilities for a large variety of high-power lasers.
