We propose a quantum analogue of the Huygens clock, in which the phases of two spins achieve synchronization through their interaction with a shared environment. The environment functions analogously to the escapement mechanism in a mechanical clock, regulating the gear train and permitting the advancement of timing in discrete intervals. In our proposed model, the relative phase of the two spins become synchronized through interaction with a mutual, correlated, environment. We show that for a system of qubits, several arguments can be made that significantly reduce the cardinality of the set of allowed measurements and, hence, the complexity of the problem. We present a numerically efficient method to calculate the degree of quantumness that exists in the correlations of our final density matrix. This method also provides a tight upper bound for when the system is described by rank-3 and rank-4 density matrices.

We introduce a new quantum embedding method to explore spin-phonon interactions in molecular magnets. This technique consolidates various spin/phonon couplings into a limited number of collective degrees of freedom, allowing for a fully quantum mechanical treatment. By precisely factorizing the entire system into "system" and "bath" sub-ensembles, our approach simplifies a previously intractable problem, making it solvable on modest-scale computers. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this method by studying the spin relaxation and dephasing times of the single-molecule qubit \ce{VOPc(OH)8}, which features a lone unpaired electron on the central vanadium atom. By using this mode projection method, we are able to perform numerical exact quantum dynamical calculation on this system which allows us to follow the flow of quantum information from the single spin qubit into the projected phonon degrees of freedom. Our results demonstrate both the utility of the method and suggest how one can engineer the environment as to further optimize the quantum properties of a qubit system.

Single molecular magnets (SMMs) and Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) attract significant interest due to their potential in quantum information processing, scalable quantum computing, and extended lifetimes and coherence times. The limiting factor in these systems is often the spin dephasing caused by interactions and couplings with the vibrational motions of the molecular framework. This work introduces a systematic projection/embedding scheme to analyze spin-phonon dynamics in molecular magnets. This scheme consolidates all spin/phonon couplings into a few collective degrees of freedom. quantum mechanically. Using parameters obtained from ab initio methods for spin/phonon coupling via Zeeman interaction, we apply this approach to compute the electronic spin relaxation times for a single-molecule qubit \ce{VOPc(OH)8}, which features a single unpaired electron localized on the central vanadium atom. However, our general embedding scheme can be applied to any single-molecule magnet or qubit MOF with any coupling/interaction Hamiltonian. This development offers a crucial tool for simulating spin relaxation in complex environments with significantly reduced computational complexity.

Polariton condensation relies on the macroscopic occupation of the lowest-energy polariton state beyond a critical density. The mechanisms driving the occupation and depopulation of this state all rely on multi-particle scattering, whose dynamics determine the extent to which condensates can form spontaneously. To pinpoint many-body processes hindering polariton condensation in two-dimensional metal-halide semiconductors, we examine the exciton-polariton dynamics in a Fabry-P\'erot microcavity over timescales involving polariton ($\bm{\ll 1}$\,ps) and exciton scattering ($\bm{\gg 1}$\,ps). We find enhanced nonlinear exciton-exciton interactions in the microcavity versus the bare semiconductor and ultrafast polariton scattering depopulating the lowest-energy polariton state. We posit that the complex scattering landscape between the exciton reservoir and polaritons limits the formation of polariton condensates in these semiconductors, and we discuss the generality of our conclusions for highly polar materials in which the lattice mediates multi-particle correlations., Comment: 27 pages, 6 figures, plus supplementary material document. It is generally assumed that environmental noise arising from thermal fluctuations is detrimental to preserving coherence and entanglement in a quantum system. In the simplest sense, dephasing and decoherence are tied to energy fluctuations driven by coupling between the system and the normal modes of the bath. Here, we explore the role of noise correlation in an open-loop model quantum communication system whereby the ``sender'' and the ``receiver'' are subject to local environments with various degrees of correlation or anticorrelation. We introduce correlation within the spectral density by solving a multidimensional stochastic differential equations and introduce these into the Redfield equations of motion for the system density matrix. We find that correlation can enhance both the fidelity and purity of a maximally entangled (Bell) state. Moreover, by comparing the evolution of different initial Bell states, we show that one can effectively probe the correlation between two local environments. These observations may be useful in the design of high-fidelity quantum gates and communication protocols.

We present a study on the many-body exciton interactions in a prototype Ruddlesden-Popper metal halide (RPMH), namely \ce{(PEA)2SnI4} (PEA = phenylethylammine), using coherent two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy. The optical dephasing times of the third-order polarization observed in these systems are determined by exciton many-body interactions and lattice fluctuations. We investigate the excitation-induced dephasing (EID) and observe a significant reduction of the contribution to the dephasing time with increasing excitation density as compared to its lead counterpart \ce{(PEA)2PbI4}, which we have previously reported [A.~R.~Srimath~Kandada~\textit{et~al.}, J.\ Chem.\ Phys.\ \textbf{153}, 164706 (2020)]. Surprisingly, we find that the EID interaction parameter is four orders of magnitude higher in \ce{(PEA)2SnI4} than that in \ce{(PEA)2PbI4}. This increase in the EID rate may be due to exciton localization arising from a more strongly statically disordered lattice in the tin derivative. This is supported by the observation of multiple closely spaced exciton states and the broadening of the linewidth with increasing population time (spectral diffusion), which suggests a static disordered structure relative to the highly dynamic lead-halide. Additionally, we find that the exciton nonlinear coherent lineshape shows evidence of a biexcitonic state with low binding energy ($<10$\,meV) not observed in the lead system. We model the lineshapes based on a stochastic scattering theory that accounts for the interaction with a non-stationary population of dark background excitations. Our study provides evidence of differences in the exciton quantum dynamics between tin- and lead-based RPMHs and links them to the exciton-exciton interaction strength and the static disorder aspect of the crystalline structure., Comment: Submitted for publication

The photophysics of $\pi$-conjugated polymers has been of considerable interest over the last three decades because of their organic semiconductor properties. Primary photoexcitations, Frenkel excitons, can be probed optically by means of numerous linear spectroscopies, providing a wealth of information on the the strength of excitonic coupling, the exciton coherence length, and on the nature of the disordered energy landscape. Nonetheless, there are intrinsic limitations in the information that can be obtained with linear spectroscopy compared to non-linear coherent techniques. Examples of this are the separation of homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening contributions to the total exciton spectral lineshape, the detailed spectral structure of exciton-vibrational coupling, and correlations between optical excitations, including exciton-charge and exciton-exciton correlations. In the present work, we discuss the role of two-dimensional coherent excitation spectroscopy and review its applications towards unravelling the basic photophysics of $\pi$-conjugated polymers as well as polymer:fullerene blends, and we argue that these techniques are now valuable mainstream materials optical probes., Comment: Submitted to the 10th Anniversary Issue of the Journal of Materials Chemistry C

Nonlinear Optical Spectroscopy is a well-developed field with theoretical and experimental advances that have aided multiple fields including chemistry, biology and physics. However, accurate quantum dynamical simulations based on model Hamiltonians are need to interpret the corresponding multi-dimensional spectral signals properly. In this article, we present the initial release of our code, QuDPy (quantum dynamics in python) which addresses the need for a robust numerical platform for performing quantum dynamics simulations based on model systems, including open quantum systems. An important feature of our approach is that one can specify various high-order optical response pathways in the form of double-sided Feynman diagrams via a straightforward input syntax that specifies the time-ordering of ket-sided or bra-sided optical interactions acting upon the time-evolving density matrix of the system. We use the quantum dynamics capabilities of QuTip for simulating the spectral response of complex systems to compute essentially any n-th-order optical response of the model system. We provide a series of example calculations to illustrate the utility of our approach.

We review our recent quantum stochastic model for spectroscopic lineshapes in the presence of a co-evolving and non-stationary background population of excitations. Starting from a field theory description for interacting bosonic excitons, we derive a reduced model whereby optical excitons are coupled to an incoherent background via scattering as mediated by their screened Coulomb coupling. The Heisenberg equations of motion for the optical excitons are then driven by an auxiliary stochastic population variable, which we take to be the solution of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. Here we discuss an overview of the theoretical techniques we have developed as applied to predicting coherent non-linear spectroscopic signals. Spectral line-shapes provide a window into the local environment coupled to a quantum transition in the condensed phase. In this paper, we build upon a stochastic model to account for non-stationary background processes produced by broad-band pulsed laser stimulation. In particular, we consider the contribution of pair-fluctuations arising from the full bosonic many-body Hamiltonian within a mean-field approximation, treating the coupling to the system as a stochastic noise term. Using the It{\^o} transformation, we consider two limiting cases for our model which lead to a connection between the observed spectral fluctuations and the spectral density of the environment. In the first case, we consider a Brownian environment and show that this produces spectral dynamics that relax to form dressed excitonic states and recover an Anderson-Kubo-like form for the spectral correlations. In the second case, we assume that the spectrum is Anderson-Kubo like, and invert to determine the corresponding background. Using the Jensen inequality, we obtain an upper limit for the spectral density for the background. The lineshape of spectroscopic transitions offer windows into the local environment of a system. Here, we present a novel approach for connecting the lineshape of a molecular exciton to finite-temperature lattice vibrations within the context of the Davydov soliton model (A. S. Davydov and N. I. Kislukha, Phys. Stat. Sol. {\bf 59},465(1973)). Our results are based upon a numerically exact, self-consistent treatment of the model in which thermal effects are introduced as fluctuations about the zero-temperature localized soliton state. We find that both the energy fluctuations and the localization can be described in terms of a parameter-free, reduced description by introducing a critical temperature below which exciton self-trapping is expected to be stable. Above this temperature, the self-consistent ansatz relating the lattice distortion to the exciton wavefunction breaks down. Our theoretical model coorelates well with both experimental observations on molecular J-aggregate and resolves one of the critical issues concerning the finite temperture stability of soliton states in alpha-helices and protein peptide chains.

Frenkel excitons are the primary photoexcitations in organic semiconductors and are ultimately responsible for the optical properties of such materials. They are also predicted to form \emph{bound} exciton pairs, termed biexcitons, which are consequential intermediates in a wide range of photophysical processes. Generally, we think of bound states as arising from an attractive interaction. However, here we report on our recent theoretical analysis predicting the formation of stable biexciton states in a conjugated polymer material arising from both attractive and repulsive interactions. We show that in J-aggregate systems, JJ-biexcitons can arise from repulsive dipolar interactions with energies $E_{JJ}> 2E_J$ while in H-aggregates, HH-biexciton states $E_{HH} < 2E_H$ corresponding to attractive dipole exciton/exciton interactions. These predictions are corroborated by using ultrafast double-quantum coherence spectroscopy on a PBTTT material that exhibits both J- and H-like excitonic behavior.

The homogeneous photoluminescence spectral linewidth in semiconductors carries a wealth of information on the coupling of primary photoexcitations with their dynamic environment as well as between multi-particles. In the limit in which inhomogeneous broadening dominates the total optical linewidths, the inhomogeneous and homogeneous contributions can be rigorously separated by temperature-dependent %linear spectral measurements such as steady-state photoluminescence spectroscopy. This is possible because the only temperature-dependent phenomenon is optical dephasing, which defines the homogeneous linewidth, since this process is mediated by scattering with phonons. However, if the homogeneous and inhomogeneous linewidths are comparable, as is the case in hybrid Ruddlesden-Popper metal halides, the temperature dependence of linear spectral measurement \emph{cannot} separate rigorously the homogeneous and inhomogeneous contributions to the total linewidth because the lineshape does \emph{not} contain purely Lorentzian components that can be isolated by varying the temperature. Furthermore, the inhomogeneous contribution to the steady-state photoluminescence lineshape is not necessarily temperature independent if driven by diffusion-limited processes, particularly if measured by photoluminescence. Nonlinear coherent optical spectroscopies, on the other hand, do permit separation of homogeneous and inhomogeneous line broadening contributions in all regimes of inhomogeneity. Consequently, these offer insights into the nature of many-body interactions that are entirely inaccessible to temperature-dependent linear spectroscopies. In molecular photochemistry, the non-equilibrium character and subsequent ultrafast relaxation dynamics of photoexcitations near the Franck-Condon region limit the control of their chemical reactivity. We address how to harness strong light-matter coupling in optical microcavities to isolate and preferentially select specific reaction pathways out of the myriad of possibilities present in large-scale complex systems. Using Fermi's Golden Rule and realistic molecular parameters, we estimate the extent to which molecular configurations can be "locked" into non-equilibrium excited state configurations for timescales well beyond their natural relaxation times. For upper polaritons--which are largely excitonic in character, molecular systems can be locked into their ground state geometries for tens to thousands of picoseconds and varies with the strength of the exciton/phonon coupling (Huang-Rhys parameter). On the other hand, relaxed LP lifetimes are nearly uniformly distributed between 2.1-2.4\,ps and are nearly independent of the Huang-Rhys parameter., Comment: Submitted perspective artcle

Frenkel excitons, the primary photoexcitations in organic semiconductors that are unequivocally responsible for the optical properties of this materials class, are predicted to form \emph{bound} exciton pairs, i.e., biexcitons. These are key intermediates, ubiquitous in many relevant photophysical processes; for example, they determine the exciton bimolecular annihilation dynamics in such systems. Deciphering the details of biexciton correlations is, thus, of utmost importance to understand the optical processes in these semiconductors. To date, however, due to their spectral ambiguity, there has been only scant direct evidence of bound biexcitons, limiting the insights that can be gained. Moreover, a quantum-mechanical basis describing biexciton correlation/stability has so far been lacking. By employing nonlinear coherent spectroscopy, we identify here bound biexcitons in a model polymeric semiconductor. We find, unexpectedly, that excitons with \emph{interchain} vibronic dispersion reveal \emph{intrachain} biexciton correlations and vice versa. Moreover, using a Frenkel exciton model, we can relate the biexciton binding energy to molecular parameters quantified by quantum chemistry, including the magnitude and sign of the exciton-exciton interaction the inter-site hopping energies. Therefore, our work promises a window towards general insights into the many-body electronic structure in polymeric semiconductors and beyond; e.g., other excitonic systems such as organic semiconductor crystals, molecular aggregates, photosynthetic light-harvesting complexes, or DNA., Comment: 4 figures and Supplementary Materials

In this paper we present a quantum stochastic model for spectroscopic line-shapes in the presence of a co-evolving and non-stationary background population of excitations. We develop a stochastic theory that treats time-dependent exciton-exciton s-wave scattering and that accounts for dynamic Coulomb screening, which we describe within a mean-field limit. With this theory, we model excitation-induced dephasing effects on time-resolved two-dimensional coherent optical lineshapes and we identify a number of features that can be attributed to the many-body dynamics occurring in the background of the exciton, including dynamic line narrowing, mixing of real and imaginary spectral components, and multi-quantum states. We test the model by means of multidimensional coherent spectroscopy on a two-dimensional metal-halide semiconductor that hosts tightly bound excitons and biexcitons that feature strong polaronic character. We find that the exciton nonlinear coherent lineshape reflects many-body correlations that give rise to excitation-induced dephasing. Furthermore, we observe that the exciton lineshape evolves with population time over time windows in which the population itself is static, in a manner that reveals the evolution of the multi-exciton many-body couplings. Specifically, the dephasing dynamics slow down with time, at a rate that is governed by the strength of exciton many-body interactions and on the dynamic Coulomb screening potential. The real part of the coherent optical lineshape displays strong dispersive character at zero time, which transforms to an absorptive lineshape on the dissipation timescale of excitation-induced dephasing effects, while the imaginary part displays converse behavior. Quantum entangled photons provide a sensitive probe of many-body interactions and offer an unique experimental portal for quantifying many-body correlations in a material system. In this paper, we present a theoretical demonstration of how photon-photon entanglement can be generated via interactions between coupled qubits. Here we develop a model for the scattering of an entangled pair of photons from a molecular dimer. We develop a diagrammatic theory for the scattering matrix and show that one can correlate the von Neumann entropy of the outgoing bi-photon wave function to exciton exchange and repulsion interactions. We conclude by discussing possible experimental scenarios for realizing these ideas.

Spin-entaglement has been proposed and extensively used in the case of correlated triplet pairs which are intermediate states in singlet fission process in select organic semiconductors. Here, we employ quantum process tomography of polarization entangled photon-pairs resonant with the excited state absorption of these states to investigate the nature of the inherent quantum correlations and to explore for an unambiguous proof for the existence of exciton entanglement.

Hybrid photonic-plasmonic nanostructures allow one to engineer coupling of quantum emitters and cavity modes accounting for the direct coherent and environment mediated dissipative pathways. Using generalized plasmonic Dicke model, we explore the non-equilibrium phase diagram with respect to these interactions. The analysis shows that their interplay results in the extension of the superradiant and regular lasing states to the dissipative coupling regime and an emergent lasing phase without population inversion having boundary with the superradiant and normal states. We report on the exciton formation and relaxation dynamics following photocarrier injection in a single-layer two-dimensional lead-iodide perovskite. We probe the time evolution of four distinct exciton resonances by means of time-resolved photoluminescence and transient absorption spectroscopies, and find that at 5\,K a subset of excitons form on a $\lesssim$ 1-ps timescale, and that these relax subsequently to lower-energy excitons on $\sim$ 5--10\,ps with a marked temperature dependence over $<$ 100\,K. We implement a mode projection analysis that determines the relative contribution of all observed phonons with frequency $\leq$50\,cm$^{-1}$ to inter-exciton nonadiabatic coupling, which in turn determines the rate of exciton relaxation. This analysis ranks the relative contribution of the phonons that participate in polaronic lattice distortions to the exciton inter-conversion dynamics and thus establishes their role in the nonadiabatic mixing of exciton states, and this in the exciton relaxation rate., Comment: This is a manuscript submitted to the Jean-Luc Br\'edas Festschrift in Chemistry of Materials

We present numerically exact solutions to the full-dimensional Schrodinger Equation for the few-electron gas (few-EG) model of electronic structure theory. Our core methodology uses a Sum-of-Products (SOP) representation of singular potentials to make the fully correlated multi-particle quantum mechanical problem computationally tractable. With full access to periodic wave-functions, we analyze the exchange/correlation, spin symmetry, and thermodynamic ($T = 0$K) phases for few-EG systems with up to four explicit electrons per unit cell. We also present pure-spin exchange/correlation functionals for the same few-EG solutions. Finally, we consider the family of few-EG calculations in juxtaposition with the closely related uniform electron gas (UEG) system, for which previous calculations have been performed using density functional theory and quantum Monte Carlo methods. The exact few-EG solutions all display a similar oscillatory behavior at lower densities, which is not predicted by previous UEG simulations., Comment: There are some technical issues with the methodology we presented which make the result invalid

Recent theoretical and experiments have explored the use of entangled photons as a spectroscopic probe of material systems. We develop here a theoretical description for entropy production in the scattering of an entangled biphoton state within an optical cavity. We develop this using perturbation theory by expanding the biphoton scattering matrix in terms of single-photon terms in which we introduce the photon-photon interaction via a complex coupling constant, $\xi$. We show that the von Neumann entropy provides a succinct measure of this interaction. We then develop a microscopic model and show that in the limit of fast fluctuations, the entanglement entropy vanishes whereas in the limit the coupling is homogeneous broadened, the entanglement entropy depends upon the magnitude of the fluctuations and reaches a maximum.

Organic Photovoltaic devices (OPVs) are becoming adequately cost and energy efficient to be considered a good investment and it is, therefore, especially important to have a concrete understanding of their operation. We compute energies of charge-transfer (CT) states of the model donor-acceptor lattice system with varying degrees of structural disorder to investigate how fluctuations in the material properties affect electron-hole separation. We also demonstrate how proper statistical treatment of the CT energies recovers experimentally observed "hot" and "cold" exciton dissociation pathways. Using a quantum mechanical model for a model heterojunction interface, we recover experimental values for the open-circuit voltage at 50 and 100meV of site-energy disorder. We find that energetic and conformational disorder generally facilitates charge transfer; however, due to excess energy supplied by photoexcitation, highly energetic electron-hole pairs can dissociate in unfavorable directions, potentially never contributing to the photocurrent. We find that "cold" excitons follow the free energy curve defined at the operating temperature of the device. Our results provide a unifying picture linking various proposed mechanisms for charge separation.

We present an input/output analysis of photon-correlation experiments whereby a quantum mechanically entangled bi-photon state interacts with a material sample placed in one arm of a Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) apparatus. We show that the output signal contains detailed information about subsequent entanglement with the microscopic quantum states in the sample. In particular, we apply the method to an ensemble of emitters interacting with a common photon mode within the open-system Dicke Model. Our results indicate considerable dynamical information concerning spontaneous symmetry breaking can be revealed with such an experimental system.

We measure the homogeneous excitation linewidth of regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene), a model semicrystalline polymeric semiconductor, by means of two-dimensional coherent photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy. At a temperature of 8\,K, we find a linewidth that is always $\gtrsim 110$\,meV full-width-at-half-maximum, which is a significant fraction of the total linewidth. It displays a spectral dependence and is minimum near the 0--0 origin peak. We present a novel {\em ab initio} approach for computing intramolecular charge and energy transfer rates based upon a projection operator scheme that parses out specific internal nuclear motions that accompany the electronic transition. Our approach concentrates the coupling between the electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom into a small number of reduced harmonic modes that can be written as linear combinations of the vibrational normal modes of the molecular system about a given electronic minima. Using a time-convolutionless master-equation approach, parameterized by accurate quantum-chemical methods, we benchmark the approach against experimental results and predictions from Marcus theory for triplet energy transfer for a series of donor-bridge-acceptor systems. We find that using only a single reduced mode--termed the "primary" mode, one obtains an accurate evaluation of the golden-rule rate constant and insight into the nuclear motions responsible for coupling the initial and final electronic states. We demonstrate the utility of the approach by computing the inelastic electronic transition rates in a model donor-bridge-acceptor complex that has been experimentally shown that its exciton transfer pathway can be radically modified by mode-specific infrared excitation of its vibrational mode.

We investigate the electronic dynamics of a model organic photovoltaic (OPV) system consisting of polyphenylene vinylene (PPV) oligomers and a [6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methylester (PCBM) blend using a mixed molecular mechanics/quantum mechanics (MM/QM) approach. Using a heuristic model that connects energy gap fluctuations to the average electronic couplings and decoherence times, we provide and estimate of the state-to-state internal conversion rates within the manifold of the lowest few electronic excitations. We show that the electronic dynamics of the OPV are dramatically altered by varying the positions of the molecules simulated at the interface. The lowest few excited states of the model interface rapidly mix allowing low frequency C-C out of plain torsions to modulate the potential energy surface such that the system can sample both intermolecular charge-transfer and charge-separated electronic configurations on sub 100 fs time scales. Our simulations support an emerging picture of carrier generation in OPV systems in which interfacial electronic states can rapidly decay into charge-separated and current producing states via coupling to vibronic degrees of freedom., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1509.05456

We report a theoretical description and experimental implementation of a novel two-dimensional coherent excitation spectroscopy based on quasi-steady-state photoinduced absorption measurement of a long-lived nonlinear population. We have studied a semiconductor-polymer:fullerene-derivative distributed heterostructure by measuring the 2D excitation spectrum by means of photoluminescence, photocurrent and photoinduced absorption from metastable polaronic products. We conclude that the photoinduced absorption probe is a viable and valuable probe in this family of 2D coherent spectroscopies.

All-organic-based photovoltaic solar cells have attracted considerable attention because of their low-cost processing and short energy payback time. In such systems the primary dissociation of an optical excitation into a pair of photocarriers has been recently shown to be extremely rapid and efficient, but the physical reason for this remains unclear. Here, two-dimensional photocurrent excitation spectroscopy, a novel non-linear optical spectroscopy, is used to probe the ultrafast coherent decay of photoexcitations into charge-producing states in a polymer:fullerene based solar cell. The two-dimensional photocurrent spectra are interpreted by introducing a theoretical model for the description of the coupling of the electronic states of the system to an external environment and to the applied laser fields. The experimental data show no cross-peaks in the two-dimensional photocurrent spectra, as predicted by the model for coherence times between the exciton and the photocurrent producing states of 20\,fs or less.

We study the collective, superradiant behavior in the system of emitter-dressed Ag nanorods. Starting from the Drude model for the plasmon oscillations, we arrive at a semi-empirical Hamiltonian describing the coupling between quantized surface plasmon modes and the quantum emitters that can be controlled by manipulating their geometry, spacing, and orientation. Further, identifying the lowest polariton mode as SP-states dressed by excitons in the vicinity of $k=0$, we examine conditions allowing for the polariton quantum phase transition. While the system is formally a 1D array, we show that the polariton states of interest can undergo a quantum phase transition to form a Bose condensate at finite temperatures for physically accessible parameter ranges., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

We investigate the electronic dynamics of model organic photovoltaic (OPV) system consisting of polyphenylene vinylene (PPV) oligomers and [6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methylester (PCBM) blend using a mixed molecular mechanics/quantum mechanics (MM/QM) approach. Using a heuristic model that connects energy gap fluctuations to the average electronic couplings and decoherence times, we provide an estimate of the state-to-state internal conversion rates within the manifold of the lowest few electronic excitations. We find that the lowest few excited states of a model interface are rapidly mixed by C=C bond fluctuations such that the system can sample both intermolecular charge-transfer and charge-separated electronic configurations on a time scale of 20fs. Our simulations support an emerging picture of carrier generation in OPV systems in which interfacial electronic states can rapidly decay into charge-separated and current producing states via coupling to vibronic degrees of freedom.

In high-performance solar cells based on polymeric semiconductors, the mechanism of photocarrier generation on $<100$-fs timescales is yet to be unravelled. In particular the dynamics of early-time electronic coupling between excitons on polymer chains and charge-transfer states need to be investigated in order to develop a detailed picture of ultrafast processes involved in photocurrent production. In this proceeding, we report preliminary measurements using a novel spectroscopy that can measure such correlations: two-dimensional coherent photocurrent excitation spectroscopy. This nonlinear technique measures off-diagonal spectral correlations in a two-dimensional photocurrent excitation spectrum. We present a fully quantum-mechanical model of the electronic dynamics of primary photoexcitations in a polymeric semiconductor heterojunction, which includes both polymer stacking and phonon relaxation. By examining the phonon-induced fluctuations in the state-to-state energy gaps and the exact golden-rule rate constants, we conclude that resonant tunnelling between the primary exciton to delocalized interchain charge-transfer states may be the initial step in the formation of charge-carriers in polymer-based bulk-heterojunction photovoltaic diodes.

We present an exciton/lattice model of the electronic dynamics of primary photoexcitations in a polymeric semiconductor heterojunction which includes both polymer pi-stacking, energetic disorder, and phonon relaxation. Results from our model are consistent with a wide range of recent experimental evidence that excitons decay directly to well-defined polarons on a sub-100 fs timescale, which is substantially faster than exciton relaxation processes. Averaging over multiple samples, we find that as the interfacial offset is increased, a substantial fraction of the density of electronic states in the energy region about the initial exciton carries significant charge-transfer character with two charges separated in the outer regions of the model lattice. The results indicate a slight increase in the density of such current-producing states if the region close to the interface is more disordered. However, since their density of states overlaps the excitation line-shape of the primary exciton, we show that it is possible that the exciton can decay directly into current-producing states via tunneling on an ultrafast time-scale. We find this process to be independent of the location of energetic disorder in the system, and hence we expect exciton fission via resonant tunnelling to be a ubiquitous feature of these systems.

The standard model for molecular recognition of an odorant is that receptor sites discriminate by molecular geometry as evidenced that two chiral molecules may smell very differently. However, recent studies of isotopically labeled olfactants indicate that there may be a molecular vibration-sensing component to olfactory reception, specifically in the spectral region around 2300 cm$^{-1}$. Here we present a donor-bridge-acceptor model for olfaction which attempts to explain this effect. Our model, based upon accurate quantum chemical calculations of the olfactant (bridge) in its neutral and ionized states, posits that internal modes of the olfactant are excited impulsively during hole transfer from a donor to acceptor site on the receptor, specifically those modes that are resonant with the tunneling gap. By projecting the impulsive force onto the internal modes, we can determine which modes are excited at a given value of the donor-acceptor tunneling gap. Only those modes resonant with the tunneling gap and are impulsively excited will give a significant contribution to the inelastic transfer rate. Using acetophenone as a test case, our model and experiments on D. melanogaster suggest that isotopomers of a given olfactant give rise to different odorant qualities. These results support the notion that inelastic scattering effects play a role in discriminating between isotopomers, but that this is not a general spectroscopic effect, Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

We present a reaction/diffusion model for the formation of a lower polariton condensate in a micro cavity containing an organic semiconducting molecular crystalline film. Our model--based upon an anthracene film sandwiched between two reflecting dielectric mirrors--consists of three coupled fields corresponding to a gas of excitons created by an external driving pulse, a reservoir of vibron states formed by the coupling between a ground-state vibrational model and a cavity photon, and a lower polariton condensate. We show that at finite temperature, the presence of the vibron reservoir can augment the exciton population such that a lower critical pumping threshold is required to achieve condensation.

We develop a model for charge trapping on conjugated polymer chains using a continuous representation of the polymer. By constraining the motion to along the chain, we find that kinks along the chain serve as points of attraction and can induce localization and spontaneous buckling of the chain. We implement this in a model system of a conjugated polymer donor and fullerene acceptor to mimic a polymer based photovoltaic system. We find that geometric fluctuations of the polymer give rise to deep potential energy traps at kinks which are often stronger than the Coulomb interaction between the electron and hole., Comment: reformatted to submit to PRL

We examine the possibility of observing Bose condensation of a confined two-dimensional polariton gas in an organic quantum well. We deduce a suitable parameterization of a model Hamiltonian based upon the cavity geometry, the biexciton binding energy, and similar spectroscopic and structural data. By converting the sum-over-states to a semiclassical integration over $d$-dimensional phase space, we show that while an ideal 2-D Bose gas will not undergo condensation, an interacting gas with the Bogoliubov dispersion $H(p)\approx s p$ close to $p=0$ will undergo Bose condensation at a given critical density and temperature. We show that $T_c/\sqrt{\rho_c}$ is sensitive to both the cavity geometry and to the biexciton binding energy. In particular, for strongly bound biexcitons, the non-linear interaction term appearing in the Gross-Pitaevskii equation becomes negative and the resulting ground state will be a localized soliton state rather than a delocalized Bose condensate., Comment: 2 figures

Recent experiments on thin-film microcavities give evidence of Bose condensation of exciton-polariton states. Inspired by these observations, we consider the possibility that such exotic "half-light/half matter" states could be observed in thin-film organic semiconductors where the oscillator strength is generally stronger than in inorganic systems. Here we present a theoretical model and simulations of macroscopic exciton-polartiton condensates in thracene thin films sandwiched within a micro-meter scale resonant cavity and establish criteria for the conditions under which BEC could be achieved in these systems. We consider the effect of lattice disorder on the threshold intensities necessary to create polartion superfluid states and conclude that even allowing for up to 5% angular disorder of the molecules within the crystal lattice, the superfluid transition remains sharp.

In my talk I will present an overview of our recent work involving the use of supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SUSY-QM). I begin by discussing the mathematical underpinnings of SUSY-QM and then discuss how we have used this for developing novel theoretical and numerical approaches suitable for studying molecular systems. We consider here the non-adiabatic energy transfer dynamics for a model bi-chromophore system consisting of a perylenediimide unit linked to a ladder-type poly-(para-phenylene) oligomer. Starting from a semi-empirical parameterization of a model electron/phonon Hamiltonian, we compute the golden-rule rate for energy transfer from the LPPP5 donor to the PDI acceptor. Our results indicate that the non-adiabatic transfer is promoted by the out-of-plane wagging modes of the C-H bonds even though theses modes give little or no contribution to the Franck Condon factors in this system. We also predict a kinetic isotope effect of $k^{(H)}/k^{(D)} = 1.7 - 2.5$ depending upon the temperature.

We present here a supersymmetric (SUSY) approach for determining excitation energies within the context of a quantum Monte Carlo scheme. By using the fact that SUSY quantum mechanics gives rises to a series of isospectral Hamiltonians, we show that Monte Carlo ground-state calculations in the SUSY partners can be used to reconstruct accurately both the spectrum and states of an arbitrary Schr\"odinger equation. Since the ground-state of each partner potential is node-less, we avoid any ``node''-problem typically associated with the Monte Carlo technique. While we provide an example of using this approach to determine the tunneling states in a double-well potential, the method is applicable to any 1D potential problem. We conclude by discussing the extension to higher dimensions.

We propose a model for the photo-deactivation mechanism for DNA based upon accurate quantum chemical and molecular dynamical evaluations of model Watson/Crick nucleoside pairs and stacked pairs. Our results corroborate recent ultrafast experimental studies on DNA oligonucleotides and suggest that following photo-excitation to a local $\pi-\pi^*$ state, the excitation is rapidly delocalized over several (3-4) bases on an ultrafast time-scale. However, this delocalized state is unstable with respect to the motions of the protons involved in hydrogen-bonding between Watson/Crick pairs and rapidly re-localizes to a charge-transfer state on a longer time-scale ranging from 10 to 100 ps. This state, too, is unstable and relaxes via a conical intersection with the ground state near the geometry of the enol- and imino-tautomeric form. We suggest that this internal deactivation mechanism is responsible for the intrinsic photostability of DNA., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

It is well known that the Gaussian wave packet dynamics can be written in terms of Hamilton equations in the extended phase space that is twice as large as in the corresponding classical system. We construct several generalizations of this approach that include non-Gausssian wave packets. These generalizations lead to the further extension of the phase space while retaining the Hamilton structure of the equations of motion. We compare the Gaussian dynamics with these non-Gaussian extensions for a particle with the quartic potential., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

For electron-phonon Hamiltonians with the couplings linear in the phonon operators we construct a class of unitary transformations that separate the normal modes into two groups. The modes in the first group interact with the electronic degrees of freedom directly. The modes in the second group interact directly only with the modes in the first group but not with the electronic system. We show that for the $n$-level electronic system the minimum number of modes in the first group is $n_s=(n^2+n-2)/2$. The separation of the normal modes into two groups allows one to develop new approximation schemes. We apply one of such schemes to study exitonic relaxation in a model semiconducting molecular heterojuction., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures
