Abstract

XML (eXtensible Markup Language) is fast becoming the de facto standard for information exchange over the Internet. As more and more sensitive information gets stored in the form of XML, proper access control to the XML documents becomes increasingly important. However, traditional access control methodologies that have been adapted for XML documents do not address the performance issue of access control. This paper proposes a bitmap-indexing scheme in which access control decisions can be sped up. Authorization policies of the form (subject, object, and action) are encoded as bitmaps in the same manner as XML document indexes are constructed. These two are then efficiently pipelined and manipulated for 'fast' access control and 'secure' retrieval of XML documents. Abstract

The field of color image retrieval has been an important research area for several decades. For the purpose of effectively retrieving more similar images from the digital image databases, this paper uses the color distributions, the mean value and the standard deviation, to represent the global characteristics of the image. Moreover, the image bitmap is used to represent the local characteristics of the image for increasing the accuracy of the retrieval system. As the experimental results indicated, the proposed technique indeed outperforms other schemes in terms of retrieval accuracy and category retrieval ability. Furthermore, the total memory space for saving the image features of the proposed method is less than Chan and Liu's method. Abstract

In this paper, we present a frame-based characteristics extraction tool, which can retrieve meaningful information from MPEG-compressed bitstreams. Taking advantage of the extracted information, we present a general architecture for MPEG video transcoding, which can transcode a given MPEG video bitstream into various MPEG video bitstreams with different characteristics. We also implement an MPEG-2-to-MPEG-4 video transcoder, which not only can change the bitstreams' syntax and bitrate but also can encode each semantic video segment as a group of pictures (GOPs), by using the techniques of frame type conversion and video shot boundary detection. Moreover, the proposed transcoder can intelligently select motion mode for each macroblock of B-Vops in an MPEG-4 video to avoid some unpredictable artifacts due to mis-selection of motion mode. This representative application demonstrates the potential usage of such frame-based characteristics.

Abstract

Motion description is a key element in region-based video,coding approaches, becoming essential for low and very low bit-rate transmissions. Among the different advanced motio-description approaches, multivector motion description (MMD) models the region motion through a variable number of motion vectors (MVs) applied on specific region points called control points (CPs). However, its application for region-based video coding would require the transmission of both MVs and CPs in order to adequately compensate each region motion. Here, a region-based control point determination strategy for MMD is proposed, which is strictly based on region contour information and the application of motion-interpolation accuracy constraints to drive the CP's location procedure. This approach offers two main advantages while keeping a reasonable computational cost: 1) it is able to operate on arbitrary-shaped regions of the image and 2) it allows the complete elimination of the transmission of any information related to the number and position of the CPs.
