Abstract

Agricultural management practices alter soil characteristics and influence soil biological properties. Hence, a field trial was carried out to assess the 14-year long-term impact of tillage and residue management practices on soil biological activities and microbial population in a rice-wheat cropping system in two depths viz., 0-15 and 15-30 cm. Soil organic carbon levels differed significantly (p > 0.05) across various treatments. Microbial biomass carbon, microbial quotient, and soil enzymatic activities were significantly greater (10-82%) in crop residue incorporation/retention treatments. Zero tillage with residue retention (ZT+R) had the greatest bacterial, actinomycetes, and fungi population, followed by reduced tillage with residue incorporation (RT+R). The ZT+R treatment had the greatest value of K-strategist and r-strategist, and was equivalent to RT+R across both soil depths. When compared to conventional tillage (CT), zero tillage (ZT) increased wheat yield by 9%. However, compared to CT, rice and rice-wheat systems had lower grain yields, whereas crop residue increased wheat and rice-wheat system yields by 10% and 6%, respectively. Abstract

Conventional fertilizer nitrogen (N) recommendations for rainfed maize resulted in low N use efficiency (NUE) due to several reasons. This warrants application of fertilizer synchronous with plant requirements that could aid in improved productivity and NUE. In this backdrop, to optimize N rates for maize, a field experiment was conducted during 2014 to 2016 in Vertisols. Twelve treatments in combinations viz., N omission, skipping basal dose, multi-split topdressing at varying time either as broadcast or band placement, soil test crop response (STCR) based N with target yield 6.0 t ha���1 and biochar application were investigated in a randomized block design (RBD). Late application of N rates (120 kg ha���1) in 2 equal splits at knee high (V8) and tasseling (VT) stages with skipping of basal N, significantly increased grain yield, agronomy efficiency (AE), partial factor productivity (PFP), physiological efficiency (PE) and recovery efficiency (RE) to the tune of 16.3%, 45.1%, 15.3%, 14.0% and 37.9% than conventional recommendations, respectively. The higher yields and NUE with late application of N were ascribed due to positive significant linear relationship between yield and N availability. Factor analysis too revealed the one to one positive function of biomass with N uptake at V8 and VT. Principal component (PC) regression exhibited that PC1 acted as a major predictor for yield and dominated by leaf area index (LAI) and N uptake. Thus, we conclude that the multi-split N, to achieve higher yield and greater NUE, is strongly linked with late splits of N at V8 and VT.

Abstract

The potential of an ornamental shrub Crown of thorns (Euphorbia milli) was evaluated for remediation of soil contaminated with Cr. The plant is one of the rare succulent ornamental shrubs with a slow to moderate growth rate and is capable of blooming almost year-round. The plant could tolerate well up to 75 mg of applied Cr and beyond that there was mortality of plants. Though the plant could not be classified as a hyperaccumulator, the plant was still very efficient in translocating Cr from roots to shoots as evident from the data on uptake and translocation efficiency values. The translocation efficiency of over 80% in our study demonstrates that a large proportion of Cr has been translocated to the harvestable biomass of the plant and therefore, this plant could be effectively recommended for the remediation of soils contaminated with low to medium level of contamination i.e., up to 50 mg/kg soil. 32. BIO-MONITORING OF HEAVY METAL POLLUTION IN A FISHERY RESERVOIR OF CENTRAL INDIA.

Abstract

Heavy metal pollution in aquatic ecosystem is a matter of serious concern due to its toxicity, persistence, bioaccumulation and biomagnification along the food chain. Fish, being in the highest trophic level in an aquatic ecosystem, can be used as a bio-indicator of heavy metal contamination and pollution in a reservoir. In the present study, three popular fish species of India (Labeo rohita, Catla catla and Cirrhinus mrigala) were used to evaluate the extent of heavy metal pollution in Halali reservoir of Madhya Pradesh, a central province of India. The average metal concentration of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in different tissues of these fishes varied between 0.02-0.06, 1.86- 5.22, 1.11-11.35, 0.29-0.82, 0.17-0.41 and 43.26-63.72mg kg-1, respectively. In the present study, liver and gills, being the highest metal accumulating tissues, were the target organs, while muscles, the consumable part, accumulated the lowest quantity of metals. Cr, Zn, Pb and Cu had positive association with fish size, while Cd and Ni had the negative relation with it. Metal concentration in the muscles of fishes of Halali reservoir was found to be well within the permitted levels for human consumption, except for Cr, which showed a higher level in muscles too.
