Proton computed tomography (pCT) aims to facilitate precise dose planning for hadron therapy, a promising and effective method for cancer treatment. Hadron therapy utilizes protons and heavy ions to deliver well focused doses of radiation, leveraging the Bragg peak phenomenon to target tumors while sparing healthy tissues. The Bergen pCT Collaboration aims to develop a novel pCT scanner, and accompanying reconstruction algorithms to overcome current limitations. This paper focuses on advancing the track- and image reconstruction algorithms, thereby enhancing the precision of the dose planning and reducing side effects of hadron therapy. In this paper we reanalyze the extended ETV curves of the formerly identified triple star candidates and many other $Kepler$ EBs. Besides the confirmations of the former findings and/or the improvements of the triple systems' orbital properties, the extended time-base allows us to identify several new, longer outer period triple systems, and it also makes possible a more detailed study of the dynamical perturbations in the tightest triple stars. We extend the ETV curves of the $Kepler$ triples with those mid-eclipse times which can be deduced from the TESS observations and, moreover, from targeted ground-based follow up observations for a number of the objects. In general, we use the same methods that were applied for the older studies, which are described in the literature. Due to the lower quality of the TESS observations, however, for the fainter systems we average light curves of the EBs for 5-20 consecutive cycles, and thereby calculate `normal' minima from these averaged light curves. In conclusion, we identified 243 hierarchical triple star candidates in the $Kepler$ sample. This sample strongly overlaps our former, nine-year-old sample, confirming the older results, or providing new solutions for 193 systems of the 2016 sample. For the remaining 28 hierarchical triple candidates of that former study, we were unable to find new solutions either because of the disappearance of the eclipses due to orbital plane precession, or due to instrumental reasons. On the other hand, due to the extended time series, we were able to identify 50 new, longer period triple star candidates, as well. We present a laser-based neutron source that produces $1.8 \times 10^5$ neutrons/s with a conversion rate of $7.8 \times 10^5$ neutrons/J. Laser pulses of 12 fs and 23 mJ were focused onto a 430-nm-thick heavy water liquid sheet at a 10 Hz repetition rate. The resulting peak intensity of $4 \times 10^{18}$ W/cm$^2$ accelerated deuterium ions from the target rear side to a kinetic energy of 1 MeV. This deuteron beam induced $^{2}$H(d,n)$^{3}$He fusion reactions in a deuterated polyethylene target, producing fast neutrons. The neutron yield was measured using two independent detection systems: the LILITH time-of-flight spectrometer, consisting of eight plastic scintillators covering nearly $180^\circ$, and a calibrated bubble detector spectrometer. The neutron yield per laser shot is 35 times higher than that recently achieved by lasers with comparable pulse energies, while the conversion rate is the highest ever achieved by continuously operating, sub-100 fs lasers. The generated neutrons are emitted from an area of 0.65 cm$^2$ corresponding to the deuteron beam spot on the catcher. Their angular distribution is peaked in forward and backward directions in agreement with the literature data on the angular distribution of $^{2}$H(d,n)$^{3}$He reaction. The system operated continuously for several hours per day with an unprecedented stability of 5%.

We study the NP-hard Stable Hypergraph Matching (SHM) problem and its generalization allowing capacities, the Stable Hypergraph $b$-Matching (SH$b$M) problem, and investigate their computational properties under various structural constraints. Our study is motivated by the fact that Scarf's Lemma (Scarf, 1967) together with a result of Lov\'asz (1972) guarantees the existence of a stable matching whenever the underlying hypergraph is normal. Furthermore, if the hypergraph is unimodular (i.e., its incidence matrix is totally unimodular), then even a stable $b$-matching is guaranteed to exist. However, no polynomial-time algorithm is known for finding a stable matching or $b$-matching in unimodular hypergraphs. We identify subclasses of unimodular hypergraphs where SHM and SH$b$M are tractable such as laminar hypergraphs or so-called subpath hypergraphs with bounded-size hyperedges; for the latter case, even a maximum-weight stable $b$-matching can be found efficiently. We complement our algorithms by showing that optimizing over stable matchings is NP-hard even in laminar hypergraphs. As a practically important special case of SH$b$M for unimodular hypergraphs, we investigate a tripartite stable matching problem with students, schools, and companies as agents, called the University Dual Admission problem, which models real-world scenarios in higher education admissions. Finally, we examine a superclass of subpath hypergraphs that are normal but necessarily not unimodular, namely subtree hypergraphs where hyperedges correspond to subtrees of a tree. We establish that for such hypergraphs, stable matchings can be found in polynomial time but, in the setting with capacities, finding a stable $b$-matching is NP-hard.

Benchmarks are important tools for tracking the rapid advancements in large language model (LLM) capabilities. However, benchmarks are not keeping pace in difficulty: LLMs now achieve over 90\% accuracy on popular benchmarks like MMLU, limiting informed measurement of state-of-the-art LLM capabilities. In response, we introduce Humanity's Last Exam (HLE), a multi-modal benchmark at the frontier of human knowledge, designed to be the final closed-ended academic benchmark of its kind with broad subject coverage. HLE consists of 2,700 questions across dozens of subjects, including mathematics, humanities, and the natural sciences. HLE is developed globally by subject-matter experts and consists of multiple-choice and short-answer questions suitable for automated grading. Each question has a known solution that is unambiguous and easily verifiable, but cannot be quickly answered via internet retrieval. State-of-the-art LLMs demonstrate low accuracy and calibration on HLE, highlighting a significant gap between current LLM capabilities and the expert human frontier on closed-ended academic questions. A probabilistic approach to the stable matching problem has been identified as an important research area with several important open problems. When considering random matchings, ex-post stability is a fundamental stability concept. A prominent open problem is characterizing ex-post stability and establishing its computational complexity. We investigate the computational complexity of testing ex-post stability. Our central result is that when either side has ties in the preferences/priorities, testing ex-post stability is NP-complete. The result even holds if both sides have dichotomous preferences. On the positive side, we give an algorithm using an integer programming approach, that can determine a decomposition with a maximum probability of being weakly stable. We also consider stronger versions of ex-post stability (in particular robust ex-post stability and ex-post strong stability) and prove that they can be tested in polynomial time.

The interval count problem, a classical question in the study of interval orders, was introduced by Ronald Graham in the 1980s. This problem asks: given an interval order $P$, what is the minimum number of distinct interval lengths required to construct an interval representation of $P$? Interval orders that can be represented with just one interval length are known as semiorders, and their characterizations are well known. However, the characterization of interval orders that require at most $k$ interval lengths -- termed $k$-count interval orders -- remains an open and challenging problem for $k\geq 2$. Our investigation into $2$-count interval orders led us naturally to consider a related problem, interval representations of permutations, which we introduce in this paper. Specifically, we characterize permutations that have a $2$-count interval representation. We prove that a permutation admits a $2$-count interval representation if and only if its longest decreasing subsequences have length at most $2$. For larger values of $k$, however, a similar characterization does not hold. There are permutations that do not permit a $3$-count interval representation despite having decreasing subsequences of length at most $3$. Characterizing $k$-count permutations remains open for $k \geq 3$. The $k$-count permutation representation problem appears to capture essential aspects of the broader problem of characterizing $k$-count interval orders. To support this connection, we apply our findings on interval representations of permutations to demonstrate that a height-$3$ interval order is $2$-count if and only if it has depth at most $2$, where the depth of an interval order refers to the length of the longest nested chain of intervals required in any interval representation of the order.

The NanoPlasmonic Laser Induced Fusion Energy (NAPLIFE) project proposed fusion by regulating the laser light absorption via resonant nanorod antennas implanted into hydrogen rich urethane acrylate methacrylate (UDMA) and triethylene glycol dimethylacrylate (TEGDMA) copolymer targets. In part of the tests, boron-nitride (BN) was added to the polymer. Our experiments with resonant nanoantennas accelerated protons up to 225 keV energy. Some of these protons then led to p + 11B fusion, indicated by the sharp drop of observed backward proton emission numbers at the 150 keV resonance energy of the reaction. The length polyhedron $Q_P$ of an interval order $P$ is the convex hull of integral vectors representing the interval lengths in interval representations of $P$. This polyhedron has been studied by various authors, including Fishburn and Isaak. Notably, $Q_P$ forms a pointed affine cone, a property inherited from being a projection of the representation polyhedron, a structure explored also by Doignon and Pauwels. The apex of the length polyhedron corresponds to Greenough's minimal endpoint representation, which is, in fact, the length vector of the canonical interval representation -- an interval representation that minimizes the sum of the interval lengths. Building on a combinatorial perspective of canonical representations, we refine Isaak's graph-theoretical model by introducing a new and simpler directed graph. From directed cycles of this key digraph, we extract a linear system of inequalities that precisely characterizes the length polyhedron $Q_P$. This combinatorial approach also reveals the unique Hilbert basis of the polyhedron. We prove that the intersection graph of the sets corresponding to these binary rays are Berge graphs; therefore they are perfect graphs. As a result, for interval orders with bounded width, the length polyhedron has a polynomial-sized Hilbert basis, which can be computed in polynomial time. We also provide an example of interval orders with a Hilbert basis of exponential size. In a companion paper we determine the Schrijver system for the length polyhedron. We conclude with open problems.

We have discovered a triply eclipsing triple-star system, TIC 290061484, with the shortest known outer period, Pout, of only 24.5 days. This "eclipses" the previous record set by lambda Tauri at 33.02 days, which held for 68 yr. The inner binary, with an orbital period of Pin = 1.8 days, produces primary and secondary eclipses and exhibits prominent eclipse timing variations with the same periodicity as the outer orbit. The tertiary star eclipses, and is eclipsed by, the inner binary with pronounced asymmetric profiles. The inclinations of both orbits evolve on observable timescales such that the third-body eclipses exhibit dramatic depth variations in TESS data. A photodynamical model provides a complete solution for all orbital and physical parameters of the triple system, showing that the three stars have masses of 6.85, 6.11, and 7.90 MSun, radii near those corresponding to the main sequence, and Teff in the range of 21,000-23,700 K. Remarkably, the model shows that the triple is in fact a subsystem of a hierarchical 2+1+1 quadruple with a distant fourth star. The outermost star has a period of ~3200 days and a mass comparable to the stars in the inner triple. In ~20 Myr, all three components of the triple subsystem will merge, undergo a Type II supernova explosion, and leave a single remnant neutron star. We investigate the formation and evolution of hot systems comprising charmed and light hadrons using non-extensive thermodynamics. We analyze data from pp, p--Pb, and Pb--Pb collisions at center-of-mass energies ranging from $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 2.76$~TeV to 13~TeV, measured by the CERN LHC ALICE experiment. The hadron species examined include charged pions and kaons, ${\rm K}^0_{\rm s}$, (anti)protons, $\phi$ mesons, $\Lambda^0$ hyperons, and D mesons. Employing our previously established methods, we determine the common Tsallis parameters $T_{\rm eq}$ and $q_{\rm eq}$ for each hadron type. While charm comes from earlier than light hadrons, we see that $T_{\rm eq}$ is ordered by mass, reflecting a similar ordering in the time-scale relevant for the spectrum. Our results also allow for constraining the heat capacity of the system. The current analysis thus enhances our understanding of hadron production dynamics and thermal properties in high-energy collisions.

Hadronization is a non-perturbative process, which theoretical description can not be deduced from first principles. Modeling hadron formation requires several assumptions and various phenomenological approaches. Utilizing state-of-the-art Deep Learning algorithms, it is eventually possible to train neural networks to learn non-linear and non-perturbative features of the physical processes. In this study, the prediction results of three trained ResNet networks are presented, by investigating charged particle multiplicities at event-by-event level. The widely used Lund string fragmentation model is applied as a training-baseline at $\sqrt{s}= 7$ TeV proton-proton collisions. Pulsating stars in eclipsing binary systems offer a unique possibility to empirically identify pulsation modes using the geometric effect of the eclipses on the pulsation signals. Here we explore the $\delta$ Scuti type pulsations in the eclipsing binary system KIC~3858884 with the aim of identifying the dominant modes using various photometric methods. We used the \textit{Kepler} short cadence photometry data. Refined binary model and pulsation parameters were determined using an iterative separation of the eclipsing binary and pulsation signals. We used various methods to identify the host stars of the dominant pulsations. \'Echelle diagram diagnostics were employed to locate the frequencies with most influence from the eclipses. Direct Fitting methods assuming spherical harmonic surface patterns were explored to determine an orientation for the symmetry axis and to infer surface mode numbers $\ell$ and $m$. General surface patterns were reconstructed using dynamic eclipse mapping, and provided ancillary mode number estimates. We established the secondary star as the main source of the pulsations. Seven peaks, including the two strongest modes, were found to show modulations during the secondary eclipses. For the first time ever, we could detect two hidden modes with amplitude intensification during the eclipses. Only one frequency appears to originate from the primary. We successfully reconstructed surface patterns and determined mode numbers for most of the selected frequencies with both of our methods. One radial and three sectoral modes, among them hidden modes. The two hidden modes were identified as (3,$\pm$1) and (2,$\pm$1). One additional radial mode turned out to be a combination frequency. The progenitor system(s) as well as the explosion mechanism(s) of thermonuclear (Type Ia) supernovae are long-standing issues in astrophysics. Here we present ejecta masses and other physical parameters for 28 recent Type Ia supernovae inferred from multiband photometric and optical spectroscopic data. Our results confirm that the majority of SNe Ia show {\it observable} ejecta masses below the Chandrasekhar-limit (having a mean $M_{\rm ej} \approx 1.1 \pm 0.3$ M$_\odot$), consistent with the predictions of recent sub-M$_{\rm Ch}$ explosion models. They are compatible with models assuming either single- or double-degenerate progenitor configurations. We also recover a sub-sample of supernovae within $1.2 $ M$_\odot$ $< M_{\rm {ej}} < 1.5$ M$_\odot$ that are consistent with near-Chandrasekhar explosions. Taking into account the uncertainties of the inferred ejecta masses, about half of our SNe are compatible with both explosion models. We compare our results with those in previous studies, and discuss the caveats and concerns regarding the applied methodology.

The indeque number of a graph is largest set of vertices that induce an independent set of cliques. We study the extremal value of this parameter for the class and subclasses of planar graphs, most notably for forests and graphs of pathwidth at most $2$.

There is a growing number of peculiar events that cannot be assigned to any of the main supernova (SN) classes. SN 1987A and a handful of similar objects, thought to be explosive outcomes of blue supergiant stars, belong to them: while their spectra closely resemble those of H-rich (IIP) SNe, their light-curve (LC) evolution is very different. Here we present the detailed photometric and spectroscopic analysis of SN 2021aatd, a peculiar Type II explosion: while its early-time evolution resembles that of the slowly evolving, double-peaked SN 2020faa (however, at a lower luminosity scale), after $\sim$40 days, its LC shape becomes similar to that of SN 1987A-like explosions. Beyond comparing LCs, color curves, and spectra of SN 2021aatd to that of SNe 2020faa, 1987A, and of other objects, we compare the observed spectra with our own SYN++ models and with the outputs of published radiative transfer models. We also modeled the pseudo-bolometric LCs of SNe 2021aatd and 1987A assuming a two-component (core+shell) ejecta, and involving the rotational energy of a newborn magnetar in addition to radioactive decay. We find that both the photometric and spectroscopic evolution of SN 2021aatd can be well described with the explosion of a $\sim$15 $M_\odot$ blue supergiant star. Nevertheless, SN 2021aatd shows higher temperatures and weaker Na ID and Ba II 6142 A lines than SN 1987A, which is reminiscent of rather to IIP-like atmospheres. With the applied two-component ejecta model (counting with both decay and magnetar energy), we can successfully describe the bolometric LC of SN 2021aatd, including the first $\sim$40-day long phase showing an excess compared to 87A-like SNe but being strikingly similar to that of the long-lived SN 2020faa. CHEOPS is a space telescope specifically designed to monitor transiting exoplanets orbiting bright stars. In September 2023, CHEOPS completed its nominal mission and remains in excellent operational conditions. The mission has been extended until the end of 2026. Scientific and instrumental data have been collected throughout in-orbit commissioning and nominal operations, enabling a comprehensive analysis of the mission's performance. In this article, we present the results of this analysis with a twofold goal. First, we aim to inform the scientific community about the present status of the mission and what can be expected as the instrument ages. Secondly, we intend for this publication to serve as a legacy document for future missions, providing insights and lessons learned from the successful operation of CHEOPS. To evaluate the instrument performance in flight, we developed a comprehensive monitoring and characterisation programme. It consists of dedicated observations that allow us to characterise the instrument's response. In addition to the standard collection of nominal science and housekeeping data, these observations provide input for detecting, modelling, and correcting instrument systematics, discovering and addressing anomalies, and comparing the instrument's actual performance with expectations. The precision of the CHEOPS measurements has enabled the mission objectives to be met and exceeded. Careful modelling of the instrumental systematics allows the data quality to be significantly improved during the light curve analysis phase, resulting in more precise scientific measurements. CHEOPS is compliant with the driving scientific requirements of the mission. Passive and active targets, implanted with gold nanoprisms, were designed to achieve enhanced and uniform power absorption during two-sided illumination by short laser pulses. The target length was adjusted to match the short laser pulse-length. Capabilities of three different, uniform, single-peaked Gaussian and adjusted, nanoresonator number density distributions were compared. The average local E-field inside the gain medium and on the surface of the nanoprisms were mapped as a function of the pump E-field strength and dye concentration, assuming a uniform nanoresonator distribution. The optimal parameters were adopted to each inspected nanoprism distributions. The time-evolution of the near-field enhancement (NFE), integrated power-loss and deposited energy were determined, additionally, the time-evolution of the standard deviation of these quantities was monitored. A comparative study was performed on passive and active targets, to determine the most advantageous nanoprism number density distribution type and to consider the advantages of dye doping. Based on the results, the adjusted distribution is proposed both in passive and active targets. Doping with the dye is advantageous in every inspected distribution in decreasing the minimal standard deviation of the NFE. It is advantageous in decreasing the delay of the minimal standard deviation in the power-loss and deposited energy, the standard deviation of the NFE as well as in increasing the FOM of the NFE in the uniform and adjusted distributions. In addition, doping allows for decreasing the delay of the minimal standard deviation in the NFE / increasing the mean NFE / decreasing the standard deviation of the power-loss and deposited energy in the uniform / Gaussian / adjusted distribution.

We introduce HyperCLOVA X, a family of large language models (LLMs) tailored to the Korean language and culture, along with competitive capabilities in English, math, and coding. HyperCLOVA X was trained on a balanced mix of Korean, English, and code data, followed by instruction-tuning with high-quality human-annotated datasets while abiding by strict safety guidelines reflecting our commitment to responsible AI. The model is evaluated across various benchmarks, including comprehensive reasoning, knowledge, commonsense, factuality, coding, math, chatting, instruction-following, and harmlessness, in both Korean and English. HyperCLOVA X exhibits strong reasoning capabilities in Korean backed by a deep understanding of the language and cultural nuances. Further analysis of the inherent bilingual nature and its extension to multilingualism highlights the model's cross-lingual proficiency and strong generalization ability to untargeted languages, including machine translation between several language pairs and cross-lingual inference tasks. Let $\Gamma\subseteq PSL_2({\bf R})$ be a finite volume Fuchsian group. The hyperbolic circle problem is the estimation of the number of elements of the $\Gamma$-orbit of $z$ in a hyperbolic circle around $w$ of radius $R$, where $z$ and $w$ are given points of the upper half plane and $R$ is a large number. An estimate with error term $e^{{2\over 3}R}$ is known, and this has not been improved for any group. Petridis and Risager proved that in the special case $\Gamma =PSL_2({\bf Z})$ taking $z=w$ and averaging over $z$ locally the error term can be improved to $e^{\left({7\over {12}}+\epsilon\right)R}$. Here we show such an improvement for the local $L^2$-norm of the error term. Our estimate is $e^{\left({9\over {14}}+\epsilon\right)R}$, which is better than the pointwise bound $e^{{2\over 3}R}$ but weaker than the bound of Petridis and Risager for the local average.

We have identified nearly a hundred close triply eclipsing hierarchical triple star systems from data taken with the space telescope TESS. These systems are noteworthy in that we can potentially determine their dynamical and astrophysical parameters with a high precision. In the present paper, we report the comprehensive study of seven new compact triply eclipsing triple star systems taken from this larger sample: TICs 133771812, 176713425, 185615681, 287756035, 321978218, 323486857, and 650024463. Most of the data for this study come from TESS observations, but two of them have Gaia measurements of their outer orbits, and we obtained supplemental radial velocity (RV) measurements for three of the systems. The eclipse timing variation curves extracted from the TESS data, the photometric light curves, the RV points, and the spectral energy distribution (SED) are combined in a complex photodynamical analysis to yield the stellar and orbital parameters of all seven systems. Four of the systems are quite compact with outer periods in the range of 41-56 days. All of the systems are substantially flat, with mutual inclination angles of < ~2 degrees. Including the systems reported in this work, we have now studied in considerable detail some 30 triply eclipsing triples with TESS, and are accumulating a meaningful census of these systems., Comment: 33 pages, 23 figures, and 19 tables; accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

The transverse momentum spectra and their multiplicity dependence serve as key tools for extracting parameters to be compared with theoretical models. Over the past decade, the scientific community has extensively studied the possibility of a system analogous to quark-gluon plasma, predicted in heavy nuclei collisions, also existing in collisions involving light nuclei and protons. We have reanalysed the data published by the ALICE Collaboration at the LHC. We present the dependence of the mean transverse momenta obtained in the soft and soft+hard (mixed) parts. Finally, we also discuss possible refinements of the analyses concerning the use of statistical parameters of higher order, aimed at a more detailed way of comparing the models with data.

The dineutron as a bound chargeless nucleus of two identical nucleons has been attracting attention for many decades. In addition to the study of the formation of a bound dineutron in the outgoing channel of some specific nuclear reactions, cross section estimates have been gaining interest as research target. We used a traditional neutron activation technique to irradiate Lu samples followed by measurements of the induced activity with HPGe spectrometer in order to detect gamma-peaks of the ${}^{175}Lu (n, 2n)^{174g}Lu$ reaction product when this reaction channel is not open for incident neutron energies. Based on two measurements of the instrumental gamma ray spectra of Lu samples we reliably identified the presence of the ${}^{174g}Lu$ isotope in the outgoing channel of the ${}^{175}Lu(n, {}^2n)^{174g}Lu$ nuclear reaction. Also, the cross section for this nuclear reaction was obtained and to be equal $33.5 \pm 5.9$ mb. For the first time, the dineutron as a nuclear reaction product was indirectly detected via statistically significant observation of the induced activity of ${}^{174g}Lu$ with corresponding cross-section estimate., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 tables

Plasmonic nanoparticles embedded into a solid matrix could play crucial role in laser-matter interactions. In this study, excess energy creation was observed during the single-shot irradiation of a polymer matrix containing plasmonic gold nanorods, resonant to the laser wavelength, with a high intensity femtosecond laser pulse. This effect was manifested in a 7-fold rise in the crater volume for a 1.7-fold increase of the laser intensity, and was absent in the pure polymer without the gold doping. It occurred at laser intensities > 1.5 x 1017 W/cm2, being the vanishing threshold of plasma mirror formation, resulting in a more than 80% increase of the amount of laser light entering the target. We use open charm production to estimate how far we can see back in time in high-energy hadron-hadron collisions. We analyze the transverse momentum distributions of the identified D mesons from pp, p--Pb and A--A collisions at the ALICE and STAR experiments covering the energy range from $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200$~GeV up to 7~TeV. Within a non-extensive statistical framework, the common Tsallis parameters for D mesons represent higher temperature and more degrees of freedom than that of light-flavour hadrons. Assuming Bjorken-expansion, the production of D mesons corresponds to a significantly earlier proper time, $\tau_{\rm D} = (0.18 \pm 0.06) \tau_{\rm LF}$., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

Single molecule microscopy has proven to be an effective tool to characterize the fluorophore-plasmonic structure interaction. However, as specific information is hidden in the emission, sophisticated evaluation is required. Here we investigated the emission polarization of rotationally mobile fluorophores near plasmonic Au/Ag alloy nanospheres both theoretically and experimentally. Our work surpasses the results of the previous studies in that it considers the rotational mobility of the fluorophores attached to metallic nanoparticles. Through theoretical modeling and elaborate numerical calculations we determined the expected measurable fluorescence polarization, and via DNA-PAINT single molecule measurements we validated the theoretical predictions. Our findings suggest that through measuring the polarization state of a sequence of single-molecule events, it is possible to infer the interaction strength of the dye-nanosphere system. A precise description requires elaborate calculations, however, a simplified model is able to predict the tendency of the polarization state with the change of experimental parameters.

In this brief report, we present laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) evidence of deuterium (D) production in a 3:1 urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA) and triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) polymer doped with resonant gold nanorods, induced by intense, 40 fs laser pulses. The in situ recorded LIBS spectra revealed that the D/(2D+H) increased to 4-8% in the polymer samples in selected events. The extent of transmutation was found to linearly increase with the laser pulse energy (intensity) between 2 and 25 mJ (up to 3x10^17 W/cm). The observed effect is attributed only to the field enhancing effects due to excited localized surface plasmons on the gold nanoparticles.

In kidney exchange programmes (KEP) patients may swap their incompatible donors leading to cycles of kidney transplants. Nowadays, countries try to merge their national patient-donor pools leading to international KEPs (IKEPs). As shown in the literature, long-term stability of an IKEP can be achieved through a credit-based system. In each round, every country is prescribed a "fair" initial allocation of kidney transplants. The initial allocation, which we obtain by using solution concepts from cooperative game theory, is adjusted by incorporating credits from the previous round, yielding the target allocation. The goal is to find, in each round, an optimal solution that closely approximates this target allocation. There is a known polynomial-time algorithm for finding an optimal solution that lexicographically minimizes the country deviations from the target allocation if only $2$-cycles (matchings) are permitted. In practice, kidney swaps along longer cycles may be performed. However, the problem of computing optimal solutions for maximum cycle length $\ell$ is NP-hard for every $\ell\geq 3$. This situation changes back to polynomial time once we allow unbounded cycle length. However, in contrast to the case where $\ell=2$, we show that for $\ell=\infty$, lexicographical minimization is only polynomial-time solvable under additional conditions (assuming P $\neq$ NP). Nevertheless, the fact that the optimal solutions themselves can be computed in polynomial time if $\ell=\infty$ still enables us to perform a large scale experimental study for showing how stability and total social welfare are affected when we set $\ell=\infty$ instead of $\ell=2$.

Standard methods, standard test conditions and the use of good sensory practices are key elements of sensory testing. However, while compliance assessment by trained and expert assessors is well developed, few information is available on testing consumer consistency. Therefore, we aim to answer the following research questions: What type of metrics can be used to characterise (in)consistent evaluation? How to rank assessors and attributes' evaluations based on (in)consistency? Who can be considered an (in)consistent assessor? What is the difference between consistent and inconsistent assessors' evaluations and use of scale? What is the impact of consistent and inconsistent assessors' evaluations on the overall liking estimate? The proposed detection of (in)consistency requires evaluations on two connected scales. We reveal how assessors and attributes can be ranked according to the level of inconsistency, as well as how inconsistent assessors can be identified. The suggested approach is illustrated by data from sensory tests of biscuits enriched with three pollens at different levels. Social capital may help individuals maintain their mental health. Most empirical work based on small-scale surveys finds that bonding social capital and cohesive social networks are critical for mental well-being, while bridging social capital and diverse networks are considered less important. Here, we link data on antidepressant use of 277,344 small-town residents to a nation-wide online social network. The data enable us to examine how individuals' mental healthcare is related to the spatial characteristics of their social networks including their strong and weak ties. We find that, besides the cohesion of social networks around home, the diversity of connections to distant places is negatively correlated with the probability of antidepressant use. Spatial diversity of social networks is also associated with decreasing dosage in subsequent years. This relationship is independent from the local access to antidepressants and is more prevalent for young individuals. At a first glance lottery is a form of gambling, a game in which the chances of winning is extremely small. But upon a deeper look, considering that the Jackpot prize of lotteries is a result of the active participation of millions of players, we come to the conclusion that the interaction of the simple rules with the high number of players creates an emergent complex system. Such a system is characterized by its time-series that presents some interesting properties. Given the inherent stochastic nature of this game, it can be described within a mean-field type approach, such as the one implemented in the Local Growth and Global Reset (LGGR) model. We argue that the Jackpot time-series behaves ergodic for six lotteries with diverse formats and player pools. Specifying this consideration in the framework of the LGGR model, we model the lotteries with growth rates confirmed by the time-series. The reset rate is deduced mathematically and confirmed by data. Given these parameters we calculate the probability density of the Jackpot prizes, that fits well the empirically observed ones. We propose to use a single w parameter, as the product of the player pools found under the jurisdiction of the lottery and the chance that a single lottery ticket wins.

We present extensive ultraviolet (UV) and optical photometric and optical spectroscopic follow-up of supernova (SN)~2021gno by the "Precision Observations of Infant Supernova Explosions" (POISE) project, starting less than two days after the explosion. Given its intermediate luminosity, fast photometric evolution, and quick transition to the nebular phase with spectra dominated by [Ca~II] lines, SN~2021gno belongs to the small family of Calcium-rich transients. Moreover, it shows double-peaked light curves, a phenomenon shared with only four other Calcium-rich events. The projected distance from the center of the host galaxy is not as large as other objects in this family. The initial optical light-curve peaks coincide with a very quick decline of the UV flux, indicating a fast initial cooling phase. Through hydrodynamical modelling of the bolometric light curve and line velocity evolution, we found that the observations are compatible with the explosion of a highly-stripped massive star with an ejecta mass of $0.8\,M_\odot$ and a $^{56}$Ni mass of $0.024~M_{\odot}$. The initial cooling phase (first light curve peak) is explained by the presence of an extended circumstellar material comprising $\sim$$10^{-2}\,M_{\odot}$ with an extension of $1100\,R_{\odot}$. We discuss if hydrogen features are present in both maximum-light and nebular spectra, and its implications in terms of the proposed progenitor scenarios for Calcium-rich transients., Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Angular radiation patterns of proton, deuteron or alpha emission are evaluated using particle-in-cell simulation of laser induced nanoplasmonic fusion. The differential Hanbury-Brown and Twiss analysis is widely used in astrophysics and in relativistic heavy ion physics to determine the source size of emitted particles. Here, we show how this method could be adopted for inertial confinement fusion. This method aims to determine the parameters of emitted nuclei after the fusion target ignition. In addition to spatial volume, the method can detect specific space-time correlation patterns connected to the collective flow post-ignition.

A certain generalization of the Selberg trace formula was proved by the first named author in 1999. In this generalization instead of considering the integral of $K(z,z)$ (where $K(z,w)$ is an automorphic kernel function) over the fundamental domain, one considers the integral of $K(z,z)u(z)$, where $u(z)$ is a fixed automorphic eigenfunction of the Laplace operator. This formula was proved for discrete subgroups of $PSL(2,\mathbb{R})$, and just as in the case of the classical Selberg trace formula it was obtained by evaluating in two different ways ("geometrically" and "spectrally") the integral of $K(z,z)u(z)$. In the present paper we work out the geometric side of a further generalization of this generalized trace formula: we consider the case of discrete subgroups of $PSL(2,\mathbb{R})^n$ where $n>1$. We present the photometric and spectroscopic evolution of SN 2022oqm, a nearby multi-peaked hydrogen- and helium-weak calcium-rich transient (CaRT). SN 2022oqm was detected 13.1 kpc from its host galaxy, the face-on spiral galaxy NGC 5875. Extensive spectroscopic coverage reveals an early hot (T >= 40,000 K) continuum and carbon features observed $\sim$1~day after discovery, SN Ic-like photospheric-phase spectra, and strong forbidden calcium emission starting 38 days after discovery. SN 2022oqm has a relatively high peak luminosity (MB = -17 mag) for (CaRTs), making it an outlier in the population. We determine that three power sources are necessary to explain the light curve (LC), with each corresponding to a distinct peak. The first peak is powered by an expanding blackbody with a power law luminosity, suggesting shock cooling by circumstellar material (CSM). Subsequent LC evolution is powered by a double radioactive decay model, consistent with two sources of photons diffusing through optically thick ejecta. From the LC, we derive an ejecta mass and 56Ni mass of ~0.6 solar masses and ~0.09 solar masses. Spectroscopic modeling suggests 0.6 solar masses of ejecta, and with well-mixed Fe-peak elements throughout. We discuss several physical origins for SN 2022oqm and find either a surprisingly massive white dwarf progenitor or a peculiar stripped envelope model could explain SN 2022oqm. A stripped envelope explosion inside a dense, hydrogen- and helium-poor CSM, akin to SNe Icn, but with a large 56Ni mass and small CSM mass could explain SN 2022oqm. We have found that the 2+2 quadruple star system BU CMi is currently the most compact quadruple system known, with an extremely short outer period of only 121 days. The previous record holder was TIC 219006972 (Kostov et al. 2023), with a period of 168 days. The quadruple nature of BU CMi was established by Volkov et al. (2021), but they misidentified the outer period as 6.6 years. BU CMi contains two eclipsing binaries (EBs), each with a period near 3 days, and a substantial eccentricity of about 0.22. All four stars are within about 0.1 solar mass of 2.4 solar masses. Both binaries exhibit dynamically driven apsidal motion with fairly short apsidal periods of about 30 years, thanks to the short outer orbital period. The outer period of 121 days is found both from the dynamical perturbations, with this period imprinted on the eclipse timing variations (ETV) curve of each EB by the other binary, and by modeling the complex line profiles in a collection of spectra. We find that the three orbital planes are all mutually aligned to within 1 degree, but the overall system has an inclination angle near 83.5 degrees. We utilize a complex spectro-photodynamical analysis to compute and tabulate all the interesting stellar and orbital parameters of the system. Finally, we also find an unexpected dynamical perturbation on a timescale of several years whose origin we explore. This latter effect was misinterpreted by Volkov et al. The nearby spiral galaxy NGC 3147 hosted three Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) in the past decades, which have been subjects of intense follow-up observations. Simultaneous analysis of their data provides a unique opportunity for testing the different light curve fitting methods and distance estimations. The detailed optical follow-up of SN 2021hpr allows us to revise the previous distance estimations to NGC 3147, and compare the widely used light curve fitting algorithms to each other. After the combination of the available and newly published data of SN 2021hpr, its physical properties can be also estimated with higher accuracy. We present and analyse new BVgriz and Swift photometry of SN 2021hpr to constrain its general physical properties. Together with its siblings, SNe 1997bq and 2008fv, we cross-compare the individual distance estimates of these three SNe given by the SALT code, and also check their consistency with the results from the MLCS2k2 method. The early spectral series of SN 2021hpr are also fit with the radiative spectral code TARDIS in order to verify the explosion properties and constrain the chemical distribution of the outer ejecta. After combining the distance estimates for the three SNe, the mean distance to their host galaxy, NGC 3127, is 42.5 $\pm$ 1.0 Mpc, which matches with the distance inferred by the most up-to-date LC fitters, SALT3 and BayeSN. We confirm that SN~2021hpr is a Branch-normal Type Ia SN that ejected $\sim 1.12 \pm 0.28$ M$_\odot$ from its progenitor white dwarf, and synthesized $\sim 0.44 \pm 0.14$ M$_\odot$ of radioactive $^{56}$Ni., Comment: 16 pages, 17 figures, 11 tables; accepted for publication in A&A
