Three galaxy clusters selected from the XXL X-ray survey at high redshift and low mass ($z\sim1$ and $M_{500} \sim 1-2 \times 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$) were observed with NIKA2 to image their Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZ) signal. They all present an SZ morphology, together with the comparison with X-ray and optical data, that indicates dynamical activity related to merging events. Despite their disturbed intracluster medium, their high redshifts, and their low masses, the three clusters follow remarkably well the pressure profile and the SZ flux-mass relation expected from standard evolution. The thermodynamical properties of the intracluster medium (ICM) are driven by scale-free gravitational collapse, but they also reflect the rich astrophysical processes at play in galaxy clusters. At low masses ($\sim 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$) and high redshift ($z \gtrsim 1$), these properties remain poorly constrained observationally, due to the difficulty in obtaining resolved and sensitive data. This paper aims at investigating the inner structure of the ICM as seen through the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect in this regime of mass and redshift. Focus is set on the thermal pressure profile and the scaling relation between SZ flux and mass, namely the $Y_{\rm SZ} - M$ scaling relation. The three galaxy clusters XLSSC~072 ($z=1.002$), XLSSC~100 ($z=0.915$), and XLSSC~102 ($z=0.969$), with $M_{500} \sim 2 \times 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$, were selected from the XXL X-ray survey and observed with the NIKA2 millimeter camera to image their SZ signal. XMM-Newton X-ray data were used in complement to the NIKA2 data to derive masses based on the $Y_X - M$ relation and the hydrostatic equilibrium. The SZ images of the three clusters, along with the X-ray and optical data, indicate dynamical activity related to merging events. The pressure profile is consistent with that expected for morphologically disturbed systems, with a relatively flat core and a shallow outer slope. Despite significant disturbances in the ICM, the three high-redshift low-mass clusters follow remarkably well the $Y_{\rm SZ}-M$ relation expected from standard evolution. These results indicate that the dominant physics that drives cluster evolution is already in place by $z \sim 1$, at least for systems with masses above $M_{500} \sim 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$., Comment: 24 pages, published in A&A. Faraday rotation measures (RMs) have been used for many studies of cosmic magnetism, and in most cases having more RMs is beneficial for those studies. This has lead to development of RM surveys that have produced large catalogs, as well as meta-catalogs collecting RMs from many different publications. However, it has been difficult to take full advantage of all these RMs as the individual catalogs have been published in many different places, and in many different formats. In addition, the polarization spectra used to determine these RMs are rarely published, limiting the ability to re-analyze data as new methods or additional observations become available. We propose a standard convention for RM catalogs, RMTable2023, and a standard for source-integrated polarized spectra of radio sources, PolSpectra2023. These standards are intended to maximize the value and utility of these data for researchers and to make them easier to access. Despite the fact that kpc-scale inverse-Compton (iC) scattering of cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons into the X-ray band is mandated, proof of detection in resolved quasar jets is often insecure. High redshift provides favourable conditions due to the increased energy density of the CMB, and it allows constraints to be placed on the radio synchrotron-emitting electron component at high energies that are otherwise inaccessible. We present new X-ray, optical and radio results from Chandra, HST and the VLA for the core and resolved jet in the $z=3.69$ quasar PKS J1421-0643. The X-ray jet extends for about $4.5''$ (32 kpc projected length). The jet's radio spectrum is abnormally steep and consistent with electrons being accelerated to a maximum Lorentz factor of about 5000. Results argue in favour of the detection of inverse-Compton X-rays for modest magnetic field strength of a few nT, Doppler factor of about 4, and viewing angle of about $15^\circ$, and predict the jet to be largely invisible in most other spectral bands including the far- and mid-infrared and high-energy gamma-ray. The jet power is estimated to be about $3 \times 10^{46}$ erg s$^{-1}$ which is of order a tenth of the quasar bolometric power, for an electron--positron jet. The jet radiative power is only about 0.07 per cent of the jet power, with a smaller radiated power ratio if the jet contains heavy particles, so most of the jet power is available for heating the intergalactic medium., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures. We present new high-resolution and high-sensitivity studies of the jets in the WAT source 3C 465, using deep transverse-resolved radio observations from e-MERLIN, and with complementary observations from the VLA. We derive a lower limit $\beta_{\rm j}$ = ($\nu_{\rm j}$/$c$) $\gtrsim$ 0.5 for the jet speed, and an upper limit $\theta_{\rm j}$ $\lesssim$ 61$^{\circ}$ for the jet angle to the line of sight. The jet spectral index ($\alpha$, defined in the sense $S \propto \nu^{\alpha}$) is fairly constant (<$\alpha_{\rm jet}$> = $-$0.7), and spectral flattening within 4.4 kpc of the core coincides with bright knots and is consistent with the site of X-ray particle acceleration at the base of the radio jet found in previous studies. There is little difference between the spectra of the two hotspot components, plausibly indicating that electron populations of the same properties are injected there. The NW and SE plumes are approximately homologous structures, with variations in mass injection and propagation in external pressure and density gradients in the two regions plausibly accounting for the slightly steeper spectrum in the NW plume, <$\alpha_{\rm NWp}$> = $-$1.43 compared with the SE plume, <$\alpha_{\rm SEp}$> = $-$1.38. Our synchrotron lifetime model supports plausible reacceleration of particles within the plume materials. Overall, our results show that the first-order Fermi process at mildly relativistic and non-relativistic shocks is the most likely acceleration mechanism at play in 3C 465 and distinguish differences between the acceleration at $\beta_{\rm j}$ $>$ 0.5 and $\beta_{\rm j}$ $<$ 0.5. The former case can accelerate electrons to higher Lorentz factors.

We study the space density evolution of active galactic nuclei (AGN) using the $610 \ \mathrm{MHz}$ radio survey of the XXL-North field, performed with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). The survey covers an area of $30.4 \ \mathrm{deg}^2$, with a beamsize of $6.5 \ \mathrm{arcsec}$. The survey is divided into two parts, one covering an area of $11.9 \ \mathrm{deg}^2$ with $1 \sigma$ rms noise of $200\ \mathrm{\mu Jy \ beam^{-1}}$ and the other spanning $18.5 \ \mathrm{deg}^2$ with rms noise of $45\ \mathrm{\mu Jy \ beam^{-1}}$. We extracted the catalog of radio components above $7 \sigma$. The catalog was cross-matched with a multi-wavelength catalog of the XXL-North field (covering about $80 \%$ of the radio XXL-North field) using a likelihood ratio method, which determines the counterparts based on their positions and their optical properties. The multi-component sources were matched visually with the aid of a computer code: Multi-Catalog Visual Cross-Matching (MCVCM). A flux density cut above $1\ \mathrm{mJy}$ selects AGN hosts with a high purity in terms of star formation contamination based on the available source counts. After cross-matching and elimination of observational biases arising from survey incompletenesses, the number of remaining sources was $1150$. We constructed the rest-frame $1.4 \ \mathrm{GHz}$ radio luminosity functions of these sources using the maximum volume method. This survey allows us to probe luminosities of $ 23 \lesssim \log(L_{1.4 \ \mathrm{GHz}}[\mathrm{W/Hz}]) \lesssim 28$ up to redshifts of $z \approx 2.1$. Our results are consistent with the results from the literature in which AGN are comprised of two differently evolving populations, where the high luminosity end of the luminosity functions evolves more strongly than the low-luminosity end.

In this paper, we present resolved observations of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect, obtained with the NIKA2 camera, towards the cluster of galaxies XLSSC102, a relatively low-mass system ($M_{500} \sim 2 \times 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$) at $z = 0.97$ detected from the XXL survey. We combine NIKA2 SZ data, XMM-Newton X-ray data, and Megacam optical data to explore, respectively, the spatial distribution of the gas electron pressure, the gas density, and the galaxies themselves. We find significant offsets between the X-ray peak, the SZ peak, the brightest cluster galaxy, and the peak of galaxy density. Additionally, the galaxy distribution and the gas present elongated morphologies. This is interpreted as the sign of a recent major merging event, which induced a local boost of the gas pressure towards the north of XLSSC102 and stripped the gas out of the galaxy group. The NIKA2 data are also combined with XXL data to construct the thermodynamic profiles of XLSSC102, obtaining relatively tight constraints up to about $\sim r_{500}$, and revealing properties that are typical of disturbed systems. We also explore the impact of the cluster centre definition and the implication of local pressure substructure on the recovered profiles. Finally, we derive the global properties of XLSSC102 and compare them to those of high-mass-and-low-redshift systems, finding no strong evidence for non-standard evolution. We also use scaling relations to obtain alternative mass estimates from our profiles. The variation between these different mass estimates reflects the difficulty to accurately measure the mass of low-mass clusters at z$\sim$1, especially with low signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) data and for a disturbed system. Aims: We investigate the properties of the polarised radio population in the central 6.5 deg$^{2}$ of the XXL-South field observed at 2.1 GHz using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) in 81 pointings with a synthesised beam of FWHM 5.2''. We also investigate the ATCA's susceptibility to polarisation leakage. Methods: We performed a survey of a 5.6 deg$^{2}$ subregion and calculated the number density of polarised sources. We derived the total and polarised spectral indices, in addition to comparing our source positions with those of X-ray-detected clusters. We measured the polarisation of sources in multiple pointings to examine leakage in the ATCA. Results: We find 39 polarised sources, involving 50 polarised source components, above a polarised flux density limit of 0.2 mJy at 1.332 GHz. The number density of polarised source components is comparable with recent surveys, although there is an indication of an excess at $\sim1$ mJy. We find that those sources coincident with X-ray clusters are consistent in their properties with regard to the general population. In terms of the ATCA leakage response, we find that ATCA mosaics with beam separation of $\lesssim 2/3$ of the primary beam FWHM have off-axis linear polarisation leakage $\lesssim 1.4$ % at 1.332 GHz., Comment: Consists of 14 pages and 9 figures. The Very Large Array Sky Survey (VLASS) is a synoptic, all-sky radio sky survey with a unique combination of high angular resolution ($\approx$2.5"), sensitivity (a 1$\sigma$ goal of 70 $\mu$Jy/beam in the coadded data), full linear Stokes polarimetry, time domain coverage, and wide bandwidth (2-4 GHz). The first observations began in September 2017, and observing for the survey will finish in 2024. VLASS will use approximately 5500 hours of time on the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) to cover the whole sky visible to the VLA (Declination $>-40^{\circ}$), a total of 33,885 deg$^2$. The data will be taken in three epochs to allow the discovery of variable and transient radio sources. The survey is designed to engage radio astronomy experts, multi-wavelength astronomers, and citizen scientists alike. By utilizing an "on the fly" interferometry mode, the observing overheads are much reduced compared to a conventional pointed survey. Cosmological simulations predict that an intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF) pervades the large scale structure (LSS) of the Universe. Measuring the IGMF is important to determine its origin (i.e. primordial or otherwise). Using data from the LOFAR Two Metre Sky Survey (LoTSS), we present the Faraday rotation measure (RM) and depolarisation properties of the giant radio galaxy J1235+5317, at a redshift of $z = 0.34$ and 3.38 Mpc in size. We find a mean RM difference between the lobes of $2.5\pm0.1$ rad/m$^2$ , in addition to small scale RM variations of ~0.1 rad/m$^2$ . From a catalogue of LSS filaments based on optical spectroscopic observations in the local universe, we find an excess of filaments intersecting the line of sight to only one of the lobes. Associating the entire RM difference to these LSS filaments leads to a gas density-weighted IGMF strength of ~0.3 {\mu}G. However, direct comparison with cosmological simulations of the RM contribution from LSS filaments gives a low probability (~5%) for an RM contribution as large as 2.5 rad/m$^2$ , for the case of IGMF strengths of 10 to 50 nG. It is likely that variations in the RM from the Milky Way (on 11' scales) contribute significantly to the mean RM difference, and a denser RM grid is required to better constrain this contribution. In general, this work demonstrates the potential of the LOFAR telescope to probe the weak signature of the IGMF. Future studies, with thousands of sources with high accuracy RMs from LoTSS, will enable more stringent constraints on the nature of the IGMF., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables. In the currently debated context of using clusters of galaxies as cosmological probes, the need for well-defined cluster samples is critical. The XXL Survey has been specifically designed to provide a well characterised sample of some 500 X-ray detected clusters suitable for cosmological studies. The main goal of present article is to make public and describe the properties of the cluster catalogue in its present state, as well as of associated catalogues as super-clusters and fossil groups. We release a sample containing 365 clusters in total. We give the details of the follow-up observations and explain the procedure adopted to validate the cluster spectroscopic redshifts. Considering the whole XXL cluster sample, we have provided two types of selection, both complete in a particular sense: one based on flux-morphology criteria, and an alternative based on the [0.5-2] keV flux within one arcmin of the cluster centre. We have also provided X-ray temperature measurements for 80$\%$ of the clusters having a flux larger than 9$\times$10$^{-15}$$\rm \thinspace erg \, s^{-1} \, cm^{-2}$. Our cluster sample extends from z$\sim$0 to z$\sim$1.2, with one cluster at z$\sim$2. Clusters were identified through a mean number of six spectroscopically confirmed cluster members. Our updated luminosity function and luminosity-temperature relation are compatible with our previous determinations based on the 100 brightest clusters, but show smaller uncertainties. We also present an enlarged list of super-clusters and a sample of 18 possible fossil groups. This intermediate publication is the last before the final release of the complete XXL cluster catalogue when the ongoing C2 cluster spectroscopic follow-up is complete. Context. We present an estimation of cosmological parameters with clusters of galaxies. Aims. We constrain the $\Omega_m$, $\sigma_8$, and $w$ parameters from a stand-alone sample of X-ray clusters detected in the 50 deg$^2$ XMM-XXL survey with a well-defined selection function. Methods. We analyse the redshift distribution of a sample comprising 178 high S/N clusters out to a redshift of unity. The cluster sample scaling relations are determined in a self-consistent manner. Results. In a lambda cold dark matter ($\Lambda$CDM) model, the cosmology favoured by the XXL clusters compares well with results derived from the Planck S-Z clusters for a totally different sample (mass/redshift range, selection biases, and scaling relations). However, with this preliminary sample and current mass calibration uncertainty, we find no inconsistency with the Planck CMB cosmology. If we relax the $w$ parameter, the Planck CMB uncertainties increase by a factor of $\sim$10 and become comparable with those from XXL clusters. Combining the two probes allows us to put constraints on $\Omega_m$=0.316$\pm$0.060, $\sigma_8$=0.814$\pm$0.054, and $w$=-1.02$\pm$0.20. Conclusions. This first self-consistent cosmological analysis of a sample of serendipitous XMM clusters already provides interesting insights into the constraining power of the XXL survey. Context. The XMM-XXL survey uses observations from XMM-Newton to detect clusters of galaxies over a wide range in mass and redshift. The moderate PSF of XMM-Newton means that point sources within or projected onto a cluster may not be separated from the cluster emission, leading to enhanced luminosities and affecting the selection function of the cluster survey. Aims. We present the results of short Chandra observations of 21 galaxy clusters and cluster candidates at redshifts z $>$ 1 detected in the XMM-XXL survey in X-rays or selected in the optical and infra-red. Methods. With the superior angular resolution of Chandra we investigate whether there are any point sources within the cluster region that were not detected by the XMM-XXL analysis pipeline, and whether any point sources were misclassified as distant clusters. Results. Of the 14 X-ray selected clusters, nine are free from significant point source contamination, either having no previously unresolved sources detected by Chandra, or with less than about 10% of the reported XXL cluster flux being resolved into point sources. Of the other five sources, one is significantly contaminated by previously unresolved AGN, and four appear to be AGN misclassified as clusters. All but one of these cases are in the subset of less secure X-ray selected cluster detections and the false positive rate is consistent with that expected from the XXL selection function modelling. We also considered a further seven optically-selected cluster candidates associated with faint XXL sources that were not classed as clusters. By decontaminating and vetting these distant clusters, we provide a pure sample of clusters at redshift z $>$ 1 for deeper follow-up observations, and demonstrate the utility of using Chandra snapshots to test for AGN in surveys with high sensitivity but poor angular resolution.

We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array measurements of the `Cosmic Seagull', a strongly magnified galaxy at z=2.7779 behind the Bullet Cluster. We report CO(3-2) and continuum 344~$\mu$m (rest-frame) data at one of the highest differential magnifications ever recorded at submillimeter wavelengths ($\mu$ up to ~50), facilitating a characterization of the kinematics of a rotational curve in great detail (at ~620 pc resolution in the source plane). We find no evidence for a decreasing rotation curve, from which we derive a dynamical mass of ($6.3\pm0.7)\times10^{10} M_{\odot}$ within $r = 2.6\pm0.1$ kpc. The discovery of a third, unpredicted, image provides key information for a future improvement of the lensing modeling of the Bullet Cluster and allows a measure of the stellar mass, $1.6^{+1.9}_{-0.86}\times10^{10} M_{\odot}$, unaffected by strong differential magnification. The baryonic mass is is expected to be dominated by the molecular gas content ($f_{gas} \leq 80 \pm 20$ \%) based on an $M_{H_2}$ mass estimated from the difference between dynamical and stellar masses. The star formation rate is estimated via the spectral energy distribution ($SFR = 190 \pm 10 M_{\odot}/yr$), implying a molecular gas depletion time of $0.25\pm0.08$ Gyr., Comment: 14 pages LaTeX using ApJLetter macros, author final version accepted, 4 figures

We show how the XXL multiwavelength survey can be used to shed light on radio galaxies and their environment. Two prominent radio galaxies were identified in a visual examination of the mosaic of XXL-North obtained with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope at 610MHz. Counterparts were searched for in other bands. Spectroscopic redshifts from the GAMA database were used to identify clusters and/or groups of galaxies, estimate their masses with the caustic method, and quantify anisotropies in the surrounding galaxy distribution via a Fourier analysis. Both radio galaxies are of FR I type and are hosted by early-type galaxies at a redshift of 0.138. The first radio source, named the Exemplar, has a physical extent of about 400 kpc; it is located in the cluster XLSSC112, which has a temperature of about 2 keV, a total mass of about $10^{14} M_\odot$, and resides in an XXL supercluster with eight known members. The second source, named the Double Irony, is a giant radio galaxy with a total length of about 1.1 Mpc. Its core coincides with a cataloged point-like X-ray source, but no extended X-ray emission from a surrounding galaxy cluster was detected. However, from the optical data we determined that the host is the brightest galaxy in a group that is younger, less virialized, and less massive than the Exemplar's cluster. A friends-of-friends analysis showed that the Double Irony's group is a member of the same supercluster as the Exemplar. There are indications that the jets and plumes of the Double Irony have been deflected by gas associated with the surrounding galaxy distribution. Another overdensity of galaxies (the tenth) containing a radio galaxy was found to be associated with the supercluster. Galaxy clusters trace the highest density peaks in the large-scale structure of the Universe. Their clustering provides a powerful probe that can be exploited in combination with cluster mass measurements to strengthen the cosmological constraints provided by cluster number counts. We investigate the spatial properties of a homogeneous sample of X-ray selected galaxy clusters from the XXL survey, the largest programme carried out by the XMM-Newton satellite. The measurements are compared to $\Lambda$-cold dark matter predictions, and used in combination with self-calibrated mass scaling relations to constrain the effective bias of the sample, $b_{eff}$, and the matter density contrast, $\Omega_{\rm M}$. We measured the angle-averaged two-point correlation function of the XXL cluster sample. The analysed catalogue consists of $182$ X-ray selected clusters from the XXL second data release, with median redshift $\langle z \rangle=0.317$ and median mass $\langle M_{500} \rangle\simeq1.3\cdot10^{14} M_\odot$. A Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis is performed to extract cosmological constraints using a likelihood function constructed to be independent of the cluster selection function. Superclusters form from the largest enhancements in the primordial density perturbation field and extend for tens of Mpc, tracing the large-scale structure of the Universe. We characterise XLSSsCN01, a rich supercluster at z~0.3 detected in the XXL Survey, composed of X-ray clusters of different virial masses and luminosities. As one of the first studies on this topic, we investigate the stellar populations of galaxies in different environments in the supercluster region. We study a magnitude-limited (r<=20) and a mass-limited sample (log(M*/M_sun)>10.8) of galaxies in the virialised region and in the outskirts of 11 XLSSsCN01 clusters, in high- and low-density field. We compute the stellar population properties of galaxies using spectral energy distribution and spectral fitting techniques, and study the dependence of star formation rates (SFR), colours, and stellar ages on environment. For r<20, the fraction of SFing/blue galaxies, computed either from the specific-SFR (sSFR) or rest-frame(rf) colour, shows depletion within the cluster virial radii, where the number of galaxies with log(sSFR/yr^-1)>-12 and with (g-r)_rf<0.6 is lower than in the field. For log(M*/M_sun)>10.8, no trends with environment emerge, as massive galaxies are mostly already passive in all environments. No differences among low- and high-density field members and cluster members emerge in the sSFR-mass relation. The luminosity-weighted age-mass relation of the passive populations within cluster virial radii show signatures of recent environmental quenching. The study of luminous and massive galaxies in this supercluster shows that while environment has a prominent role in determining the fractions of SFing/blue galaxies, its effects on the star formation activity in SFing galaxies are negligible., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

We present a spectral analysis of the lobes and X-ray jets of Cygnus A, using more than 2 Ms of $\textit{Chandra}$ observations. The X-ray jets are misaligned with the radio jets and significantly wider. We detect non-thermal emission components in both lobes and jets. For the eastern lobe and jet, we find 1 keV flux densities of $71_{-10}^{+10}$ nJy and $24_{-4}^{+4}$ nJy, and photon indices of $1.72_{-0.03}^{+0.03}$ and $1.64_{-0.04}^{+0.04}$ respectively. For the western lobe and jet, we find flux densities of $50_{-13}^{+12}$ nJy and $13_{-5}^{+5}$ nJy, and photon indices of $1.97_{-0.10}^{+0.23}$ and $1.86_{-0.12}^{+0.18}$ respectively. Using these results, we modeled the electron energy distributions of the lobes as broken power laws with age breaks. We find that a significant population of non-radiating particles is required to account for the total pressure of the eastern lobe. In the western lobe, no such population is required and the low energy cutoff to the electron distribution there needs to be raised to obtain pressures consistent with observations. This discrepancy is a consequence of the differing X-ray photon indices, which may indicate that the turnover in the inverse-Compton spectrum of the western lobe is at lower energies than in the eastern lobe. We modeled the emission from both jets as inverse-Compton emission. There is a narrow region of parameter space for which the X-ray jet can be a relic of an earlier active phase, although lack of knowledge about the jet's electron distribution and particle content makes the modelling uncertain., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures

We use new and archival Chandra observations of Cygnus A, totalling $\sim$1.9 Ms, to investigate the distribution and temperature structure of gas lying within the projected extent of the cocoon shock and exhibiting a rib-like structure. We confirm that the X-rays are dominated by thermal emission with an average temperature of around 4 keV, and have discovered an asymmetry in the temperature gradient, with the southwestern part of the gas cooler than the rest by up to 2 keV. Pressure estimates suggest that the gas is a coherent structure of single origin located inside the cocoon, with a mass of roughly $2\times10^{10} M_{\odot}$. We conclude that the gas is debris resulting from disintegration of the cool core of the Cygnus A cluster after the passage of the jet during the early stages of the current epoch of activity. The 4 keV gas now lies on the central inside surface of the hotter cocoon rim. The temperature gradient could result from an offset between the centre of the cluster core and the Cygnus A host galaxy at the switch-on of current radio activity., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We present Chandra X-ray imaging of a flux-limited sample of flat spectrum radio-emitting quasars with jet-like structure. X-rays are detected from 59% of 56 jets. No counterjets were detected. The core spectra are fitted by power law spectra with photon index $\Gamma_x$ whose distribution is consistent with a normal distribution with mean 1.61{+0.04}{-0.05} and dispersion 0.15{+0.04}{-0.03}. We show that the distribution of $\alpha_{rx}$, the spectral index between the X-ray and radio band jet fluxes, fits a Gaussian with mean 0.974 $\pm$ 0.012 and dispersion 0.077 $\pm$ 0.008. We test the model in which kpc-scale X-rays result from inverse Compton scattering of cosmic microwave background photons off the jet's relativistic electrons (the IC-CMB model). In the IC-CMB model, a quantity Q computed from observed fluxes and the apparent size of the emission region depends on redshift as $(1+z)^{3+\alpha}$. We fit $Q \propto (1+z)^{a}$, finding $a = 0.88 \pm 0.90$ and reject at 99.5% confidence the hypothesis that the average $\alpha_{rx}$ depends on redshift in the manner expected in the IC-CMB model. This conclusion is mitigated by lack of detailed knowledge of the emission region geometry, which requires deeper or higher resolution X-ray observations. Furthermore, if the IC-CMB model is valid for X-ray emission from kpc-scale jets, then the jets must decelerate on average: bulk Lorentz factors should drop from about 15 to 2-3 between pc and kpc scales. We perform lens modelling and source reconstruction of Submillimeter Array (SMA) data for a sample of 12 strongly lensed galaxies selected at 500$\mu$m in the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey H-ATLAS. A previous analysis of the same dataset used a single S\`ersic profile to model the light distribution of each background galaxy. Here we model the source brightness distribution with an adaptive pixel scale scheme, extended to work in the Fourier visibility space of interferometry. We also present new SMA observations for seven other candidate lensed galaxies from the H-ATLAS sample. Our derived lens model parameters are in general consistent with previous findings. However, our estimated magnification factors, ranging from 3 to 10, are lower. The discrepancies are observed in particular where the reconstructed source hints at the presence of multiple knots of emission. We define an effective radius of the reconstructed sources based on the area in the source plane where emission is detected above 5$\sigma$. We also fit the reconstructed source surface brightness with an elliptical Gaussian model. We derive a median value $r_{eff}\,\sim 1.77\,$kpc and a median Gaussian full width at half maximum $\sim1.47\,$kpc. After correction for magnification, our sources have intrinsic star formation rates SFR$\,\sim900-3500\,M_{\odot}yr^{-1}$, resulting in a median star formation rate surface density $\Sigma_{SFR}\sim132\,M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-2}$ (or $\sim 218\,M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-2}$ for the Gaussian fit). This is consistent with what observed for other star forming galaxies at similar redshifts, and is significantly below the Eddington limit for a radiation pressure regulated starburst., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

By determining the nature of all the Planck compact sources within 808.4 deg^2 of large Herschel surveys, we have identified 27 candidate proto-clusters of dusty star forming galaxies (DSFGs) that are at least 3{\sigma} overdense in either 250, 350 or 500 $\mu$mm sources. We find roughly half of all the Planck compact sources are resolved by Herschel into multiple discrete objects, with the other half remaining unresolved by Herschel. We find a significant difference between versions of the Planck catalogues, with earlier releases hosting a larger fraction of candidate proto-clusters and Galactic Cirrus than later releases, which we ascribe to a difference in the filters used in the creation of the three catalogues. We find a surface density of DSFG candidate proto-clusters of (3.3 $\pm$ 0.7) x 10^(-2) sources deg^(-2), in good agreement with previous similar studies. We find that a Planck colour selection of S_{857}/S_{545} < 2 works well to select candidate proto-clusters, but can miss proto-clusters at z < 2. The Herschel colours of individual candidate proto-cluster members indicate our candidate proto-clusters all likely all lie at z > 1. Our candidate proto-clusters are a factor of 5 times brighter at 353 GHz than expected from simulations, even in the most conservative estimates. Further observations are needed to confirm whether these candidate proto-clusters are physical clusters, multiple proto-clusters along the line of sight, or chance alignments of unassociated sources., Comment: Resubmitted to MNRAS after request for minor revision

We present a deep survey of the SuperCLASS super-cluster - a region of sky known to contain five Abell clusters at redshift $z\sim0.2$ - performed using the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager (AMI) Large Array (LA) at 15.5$~$GHz. Our survey covers an area of approximately 0.9 square degrees. We achieve a nominal sensitivity of $32.0~\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ toward the field centre, finding 80 sources above a $5\sigma$ threshold. We derive the radio colour-colour distribution for sources common to three surveys that cover the field and identify three sources with strongly curved spectra - a high-frequency-peaked source and two GHz-peaked-spectrum sources. The differential source count (i) agrees well with previous deep radio source count, (ii) exhibits no evidence of an emerging population of star-forming galaxies, down to a limit of 0.24$~$mJy, and (iii) disagrees with some models of the 15$~$GHz source population. However, our source count is in agreement with recent work that provides an analytical correction to the source count from the SKADS Simulated Sky, supporting the suggestion that this discrepancy is caused by an abundance of flat-spectrum galaxy cores as-yet not included in source population models., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables. An X-ray survey with the XMM-Newton telescope, XMM-XXL, has identified hundreds of galaxy groups and clusters in two 25 deg$^2$ fields. Combining spectroscopic and X-ray observations in one field, we determine how the kinetic energy of galaxies scales with hot gas temperature and also, by imposing prior constraints on the relative energies of galaxies and dark matter, infer a power-law scaling of total mass with temperature. Our goals are: i) to determine parameters of the scaling between galaxy velocity dispersion and X-ray temperature, $T_{\rm 300kpc}$, for the halos hosting XXL-selected clusters, and; ii) to infer the log-mean scaling of total halo mass with temperature, $\langle \ln M_{200} \, | \, T, z \rangle$. We apply an ensemble velocity likelihood to a sample of $> 1500$ spectroscopic redshifts within $132$ spectroscopically confirmed clusters with redshifts $z < 0.6$ to model, $\langle \ln \sigma_{\rm gal}\,|\,T,z\rangle$, where $\sigma_{\rm gal}$ is the velocity dispersion of XXL cluster member galaxies and $T$ is a 300 kpc aperture temperature. To infer total halo mass we use a precise virial relation for massive halos calibrated by N-body simulations along with a single degree of freedom summarizing galaxy velocity bias with respect to dark matter. For the XXL-N cluster sample, we find $\sigma_{\rm gal} \propto T^{0.63\pm0.05}$, a slope significantly steeper than the self-similar expectation of $0.5$. Assuming scale-independent galaxy velocity bias, we infer a mean logarithmic mass at a given X-ray temperature and redshift, $\langle\ln (E(z) M_{200}/10^{14}\,{\rm M}_{\odot})|T,z\rangle=\pi+\alpha \ln(T/T_p )+\beta\ln (E(z)/E(z_p) )$ using pivot values ${\rm k}T_{p}=2.2\,{\rm keV}$ and $z_p=0.25$, with normalization $\pi=0.45\pm0.24$ and slope $\alpha=1.89\pm0.15$. The fraction of galaxies bound in groups in the nearby Universe is high (50% at z~0). Systematic studies of galaxy properties in groups are important in order to improve our understanding of the evolution of galaxies and of the physical phenomena occurring within this environment. We have built a complete spectrophotometric sample of galaxies within X-ray detected, optically spectroscopically confirmed groups and clusters (G&C), covering a wide range of halo masses at z<= 0.6. In the context of the XXL survey, we analyse a sample of 164 G&C in the XXL-North region (XXL-N), at z <= 0.6, with a wide range of virial masses (1.24 x 10^13 <=M_500 M_sun <= 6.63 x 10^14) and X-ray luminosities ( 2.27 x 10^41 <= L^XXL_500 (erg/s)<= 2.15 x10^44). The G&C are X-ray selected and spectroscopically confirmed. We describe the membership assignment and the spectroscopic completeness analysis, and compute stellar masses. As a first scientific exploitation of the sample, we study the dependence of the galaxy stellar mass function (GSMF) on global environment. We present a spectrophotometric characterisation of the G&C and their galaxies. The final sample contains 132 G&C, 22111 field galaxies and 2225 G&C galaxies with r-band magnitude <20. Of the G&C, 95% have at least three spectroscopic members, and 70% at least ten. The shape of the GSMF seems not to depend on environment (field versus G&C) or X-ray luminosity ( used as a proxy for the virial mass of the system). These results are confirmed by the study of the correlation between mean stellar mass of G&C members and L^XXL_500.We release the spectrophotometric catalogue of galaxies with all the quantities computed in this work. As a first homogeneous census of galaxies within X-ray spectroscopically confirmed G&C at these redshifts, this sample will allow environmental studies of the evolution of galaxy properties., Comment: 20 pages, 18 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

We present new X-ray (Chandra) and radio (ATCA) observations of the z=0.09 radio galaxy PKS B1416-493, a member of the southern equivalent of the 3CRR sample. We find the source to be embedded in a previously unrecognized bright kT=4.6 keV non cool-core cluster. The discovery of new clusters of such high temperature and luminosity within z=0.1 is rare. The radio source was chosen for observation based on its intermediate FRI/II morphology. We identify a cavity coincident with the northeast lobe, and excess counts associated with the southwest lobe that we interpret as inverse Compton X-ray emission. The jet power, at 5.3 x 10^44 erg/s, when weighted by radio source density, supports suggestions that radio sources of intermediate morphology and radio power may dominate radio-galaxy heating in the local Universe., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures; Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present deep observations at 450 um and 850 um in the Extended Groth Strip field taken with the SCUBA-2 camera mounted on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope as part of the deep SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey (S2CLS), achieving a central instrumental depth of $\sigma_{450}=1.2$ mJy/beam and $\sigma_{850}=0.2$ mJy/beam. We detect 57 sources at 450 um and 90 at 850 um with S/N > 3.5 over ~70 sq. arcmin. From these detections we derive the number counts at flux densities $S_{450}>4.0$ mJy and $S_{850}>0.9$ mJy, which represent the deepest number counts at these wavelengths derived using directly extracted sources from only blank-field observations with a single-dish telescope. Our measurements smoothly connect the gap between previous shallower blank-field single-dish observations and deep interferometric ALMA results. We estimate the contribution of our SCUBA-2 detected galaxies to the cosmic infrared background (CIB), as well as the contribution of 24 um-selected galaxies through a stacking technique, which add a total of $0.26\pm0.03$ and $0.07\pm0.01$ MJy/sr, at 450 um and 850 um, respectively. These surface brightnesses correspond to $60\pm20$ and $50\pm20$ per cent of the total CIB measurements, where the errors are dominated by those of the total CIB. Using the photometric redshifts of the 24 um-selected sample and the redshift distributions of the submillimetre galaxies, we find that the redshift distribution of the recovered CIB is different at each wavelength, with a peak at $z\sim1$ for 450 um and at $z\sim2$ for 850um, consistent with previous observations and theoretical models., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present physical properties [redshifts (z), star-formation rates (SFRs) and stellar masses (Mstar)] of bright (S850>4mJy) submm galaxies in the ~2deg2 COSMOS and UDS fields selected with SCUBA-2/JCMT. We complete the galaxy identification process for all (~2000) S/N>3.5 850-um sources, but focus our scientific analysis on a high-quality sub-sample of 651 S/N>4 sources with complete multi-wavelength coverage including 1.1-mm imaging. We check the reliability of our identifications, and the robustness of the SCUBA-2 fluxes by revisiting the recent ALMA follow-up of 29 sources in our sample. Considering >4mJy ALMA sources, our identification method has a completeness of ~86 per cent with a reliability of ~92 per cent, and only ~15-20 per cent of sources are significantly affected by multiplicity (when a secondary component contributes >1/3 of the primary source flux). The impact of source blending on the 850-um source counts as determined with SCUBA-2 is modest; scaling the single-dish fluxes by ~0.9 reproduces the ALMA source counts. For our final SCUBA-2 sample we find median z=2.40+0.10-0.04, SFR=287+-6Moyr-1, and log(Mstar/Mo)=11.12+-0.02 (the latter for 349/651 sources with optical identifications). These properties clearly locate bright submm galaxies on the high-mass end of the 'main sequence' of star-forming galaxies out to z~6, suggesting that major mergers are not a dominant driver of the high-redshift submm-selected population. Their number densities are also consistent with the evolving galaxy stellar mass function. The XXL survey currently covers two 25 sq. deg. patches with XMM observations of ~10ks. We summarise the scientific results associated with the first release of the XXL data set, that occurred mid 2016. We review several arguments for increasing the survey depth to 40 ks during the next decade of XMM operations. X-ray (z<2) cluster, (z<4) AGN and cosmic background survey science will then benefit from an extraordinary data reservoir. This, combined with deep multi-$\lambda$ observations, will lead to solid standalone cosmological constraints and provide a wealth of information on the formation and evolution of AGN, clusters and the X-ray background. In particular, it will offer a unique opportunity to pinpoint the z>1 cluster density. We present new Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) 850um continuum observations of the original Lyman-alpha Blob (LAB) in the SSA22 field at z=3.1 (SSA22-LAB01). The ALMA map resolves the previously identified submillimeter source into three components with total flux density S_850 = 1.68+/-0.06 mJy, corresponding to a star formation rate of ~150 M_sun/yr. The submillimeter sources are associated with several faint (m~27 mag) rest-frame ultraviolet sources identified in Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) clear filter imaging (~5850A). One of these companions is spectroscopically confirmed with Keck MOSFIRE to lie within 20 projected kpc and 250 km/s of one of the ALMA components. We postulate that some of these STIS sources represent a population of low-mass star-forming satellites surrounding the central submillimeter sources, potentially contributing to their growth and activity through accretion. Using a high resolution cosmological zoom simulation of a 10^13 M_sun halo at z=3, including stellar, dust and Ly-alpha radiative transfer, we can model the ALMA+STIS observations and demonstrate that Ly-alpha photons escaping from the central submillimeter sources are expected to resonantly scatter in neutral hydrogen, the majority of which is predicted to be associated with halo substructure. We show how this process gives rise to extended Ly-alpha emission with similar surface brightness and morphology to observed giant LABs., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the results of 325 MHz GMRT observations of a super-cluster field, known to contain five Abell clusters at redshift $z \sim 0.2$. We achieve a nominal sensitivity of $34\,\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ toward the phase centre. We compile a catalogue of 3257 sources with flux densities in the range $183\,\mu\rm{Jy}\,-\,1.5\,\rm{Jy}$ within the entire $\sim 6.5$ square degree field of view. Subsequently, we use available survey data at other frequencies to derive the spectral index distribution for a sub-sample of these sources, recovering two distinct populations -- a dominant population which exhibit spectral index trends typical of steep-spectrum synchrotron emission, and a smaller population of sources with typically flat or rising spectra. We identify a number of sources with ultra-steep spectra or rising spectra for further analysis, finding two candidate high-redshift radio galaxies and three gigahertz-peaked-spectrum radio sources. Finally, we derive the Euclidean-normalised differential source counts using the catalogue compiled in this work, for sources with flux densities in excess of $223 \, \mu$Jy. Our differential source counts are consistent with both previous observations at this frequency and models of the low-frequency source population. These represent the deepest source counts yet derived at 325 MHz. Our source counts exhibit the well-known flattening at mJy flux densities, consistent with an emerging population of star-forming galaxies; we also find marginal evidence of a downturn at flux densities below $308 \, \mu$Jy, a feature so far only seen at 1.4 GHz., Comment: 25 pages, 18 figures, 10 tables. We present a catalogue of nearly 3,000 submillimetre sources detected at 850um over ~5 square degrees surveyed as part of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey (S2CLS). This is the largest survey of its kind at 850um, probing a meaningful cosmic volume at the peak of star formation activity and increasing the sample size of submillimetre galaxies selected at 850um by an order of magnitude. We describe the wide 850um survey component of S2CLS, which covers the key extragalactic survey fields: UKIDSS-UDS, COSMOS, Akari-NEP, Extended Groth Strip, Lockman Hole North, SSA22 and GOODS-North. The average 1-sigma depth of S2CLS is 1.2 mJy/beam, approaching the SCUBA-2 850um confusion limit, which we determine to be ~0.8 mJy/beam. We measure the single dish 850um number counts to unprecedented accuracy, reducing the Poisson errors on the differential counts to approximately 4% at S_850~3mJy. With several independent fields, we investigate field-to-field variance, finding that the number counts on 0.5-1 degree scales are generally within 50% of the S2CLS mean for S_850>3mJy, with scatter consistent with the Poisson and estimated cosmic variance uncertainties, although there is a marginal (2-sigma) density enhancement in the GOODS-North field. The observed number counts are in reasonable agreement with recent phenomenological and semi-analytic models. Finally, the large solid angle of S2CLS allows us to measure the bright-end counts: at S_850>10mJy there are approximately ten sources per square degree, and we detect the distinctive up-turn in the number counts indicative of the detection of local sources of 850um emission and strongly lensed high-redshift galaxies. We report measurements from an XMM-Newton observation of the low-excitation radio galaxy 3C 386. The study focusses on an X-ray-emitting gas belt, which lies between and orthogonal to the radio lobes of 3C 386 and has a mean temperature of $0.94\pm0.05$ keV, cooler than the extended group atmosphere. The gas in the belt shows temperature structure with material closer to the surrounding medium being hotter than gas closer to the host galaxy. We suggest that this gas belt involves a `buoyancy-driven inflow' of part of the group-gas atmosphere where the buoyant rise of the radio lobes through the ambient medium has directed an inflow towards the relic cold core of the group. Inverse-Compton emission from the radio lobes is detected at a level consistent with a slight suppression of the magnetic field below the equipartition value., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the discovery with Chandra of X-ray-emitting gas associated with the jet-cloud interaction in the radio galaxy 3C 277.3 (Coma A), a source that falls in the most important power range for radio-mode feedback in the Universe. This hot gas, heated by the jet, dominates the mass of the cloud which is responsible for an extreme projected deflection of the kpc-scale radio jet. Highly absorbed X-ray emission from the nucleus of 3C 277.3 confirms that the jet lies close to the plane of the sky and so has a large intrinsic deflection. We detect group gas on the scale of the radio lobes, and see X-ray cavities coincident with the brightest radio emission, with the lobes embraced by X-ray enhancements that we argue are the result of shocks. The anti-correlation between the locations of X-ray arms and H$\alpha$-emitting filaments that are believed to have originated from a merger with one or more gas-rich galaxies suggests that shocks advancing around the lobe are inhibited by the dense colder material. Synchrotron X-ray emission is detected from the upstream edge of a second bright radio knot. X-rays are also detected from the location where an undetected counterjet enters the northern radio hotspot. We investigate the gas mass distribution in the high redshift cluster MS 1054-0321 using Chandra X-ray and OCRA SZ effect data. We use a superposition of offset $\beta$-type models to describe the composite structure of MS 1054-0321. We find gas mass fractions $f_{gas}^\rm{X\mbox{-}ray} = 0.087_{-0.001}^{+0.005}$ and $f_{gas}^\rm{SZ} = 0.094_{-0.001}^{+0.003}$ for the (main) eastern component of MS 1054-0321 using X-ray or SZ data, but $f_{gas}^\rm{X\mbox{-}ray} = 0.030 _{-0.014}^{+0.010}$ for the western component. The gas mass fraction for the eastern component is in agreement with some results reported in the literature, but inconsistent with the cosmic baryon fraction. The low gas mass fraction for the western component is likely to be a consequence of gas stripping during the ongoing merger. The gas mass fraction of the integrated system is $0.060_{-0.009}^{+0.004}$: we suggest that the missing baryons from the western component are present as hot diffuse gas which is poorly represented in existing X-ray images. Within a cluster, gravitational effects can lead to the removal of stars from their parent galaxies. Gas hydrodynamical effects can additionally strip gas and dust from galaxies. The properties of the ICL can therefore help constrain the physical processes at work in clusters by serving as a fossil record of the interaction history. The present study is designed to characterise this ICL in a ~10^14 M_odot and z~0.53 cluster of galaxies from imaging and spectroscopic points of view. By applying a wavelet-based method to CFHT Megacam and WIRCAM images, we detect significant quantities of diffuse light. These sources were then spectroscopically characterised with MUSE. MUSE data were also used to compute redshifts of 24 cluster galaxies and search for cluster substructures. An atypically large amount of ICL has been detected in this cluster. Part of the detected diffuse light has a very weak optical stellar component and apparently consists mainly of gas emission, while other diffuse light sources are clearly dominated by old stars. Furthermore, emission lines were detected in several places of diffuse light. Our spectral analysis shows that this emission likely originates from low-excitation parameter gas. The stellar contribution to the ICL is about 2.3x10^9 yrs old even though the ICL is not currently forming a large number of stars. On the other hand, the contribution of the gas emission to the ICL in the optical is much greater than the stellar contribution in some regions, but the gas density is likely too low to form stars. These observations favour ram pressure stripping, turbulent viscous stripping, or supernovae winds as the origin of the large amount of intracluster light. We present the XXL Survey, the largest XMM programme totaling some 6.9 Ms to date and involving an international consortium of roughly 100 members. The XXL Survey covers two extragalactic areas of 25 deg2 each at a point-source sensitivity of ~ 5E-15 erg/sec/cm2 in the [0.5-2] keV band (completeness limit). The survey's main goals are to provide constraints on the dark energy equation of state from the space-time distribution of clusters of galaxies and to serve as a pathfinder for future, wide-area X-ray missions. We review science objectives, including cluster studies, AGN evolution, and large-scale structure, that are being conducted with the support of approximately 30 follow-up programmes. We describe the 542 XMM observations along with the associated multi-lambda and numerical simulation programmes. We give a detailed account of the X-ray processing steps and describe innovative tools being developed for the cosmological analysis. The paper provides a thorough evaluation of the X-ray data, including quality controls, photon statistics, exposure and background maps, and sky coverage. Source catalogue construction and multi-lambda associations are briefly described. This material will be the basis for the calculation of the cluster and AGN selection functions, critical elements of the cosmological and science analyses. The XXL multi-lambda data set will have a unique lasting legacy value for cosmological and extragalactic studies and will serve as a calibration resource for future dark energy studies with clusters and other X-ray selected sources. With the present article, we release the XMM XXL photon and smoothed images along with the corresponding exposure maps. Context. The XXL Survey is the largest survey carried out by the XMM-Newton satellite and covers a total area of 50 square degrees distributed over two fields. It primarily aims at investigating the large-scale structures of the Universe using the distribution of galaxy clusters and active galactic nuclei as tracers of the matter distribution. Aims. This article presents the XXL bright cluster sample, a subsample of 100 galaxy clusters selected from the full XXL catalogue by setting a lower limit of $3\times 10^{-14}\,\mathrm{erg \,s^{-1}cm^{-2}}$ on the source flux within a 1$^{\prime}$ aperture. Methods. The selection function was estimated using a mixture of Monte Carlo simulations and analytical recipes that closely reproduce the source selection process. An extensive spectroscopic follow-up provided redshifts for 97 of the 100 clusters. We derived accurate X-ray parameters for all the sources. Scaling relations were self-consistently derived from the same sample in other publications of the series. On this basis, we study the number density, luminosity function, and spatial distribution of the sample. Results. The bright cluster sample consists of systems with masses between $M_{500}=7\times 10^{13}$ and $3\times 10^{14} M_\odot$, mostly located between $z=0.1$ and 0.5. The observed sky density of clusters is slightly below the predictions from the WMAP9 model, and significantly below the predictions from the Planck 2015 cosmology. In general, within the current uncertainties of the cluster mass calibration, models with higher values of $\sigma_8$ and/or $\Omega_m$ appear more difficult to accommodate. We provide tight constraints on the cluster differential luminosity function and find no hint of evolution out to $z\sim1$. We also find strong evidence for the presence of large-scale structures in the XXL bright cluster sample and identify five new superclusters., Comment: Accepted by A&A, 25 pages, 17 figures, 7 tables. We report on deep Chandra observations of the nearby broad-line radio galaxy Pictor A, which we combine with new Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations. The new X-ray data have a factor 4 more exposure than observations previously presented and span a 15-year time baseline, allowing a detailed study of the spatial, temporal and spectral properties of the AGN, jet, hotspot and lobes. We present evidence for further time variation of the jet, though the flare that we reported in previous work remains the most significantly detected time-varying feature. We also confirm previous tentative evidence for a faint counterjet. Based on the radio through X-ray spectrum of the jet and its detailed spatial structure, and on the properties of the counterjet, we argue that inverse-Compton models can be conclusively rejected, and propose that the X-ray emission from the jet is synchrotron emission from particles accelerated in the boundary layer of a relativistic jet. For the first time, we find evidence that the bright western hotspot is also time-varying in X-rays, and we connect this to the small-scale structure in the hotspot seen in high-resolution radio observations. The new data allow us to confirm that the spectrum of the lobes is in good agreement with the predictions of an inverse-Compton model and we show that the data favour models in which the filaments seen in the radio images are predominantly the result of spatial variation of magnetic fields in the presence of a relatively uniform electron distribution., Comment: 21 pages, 11 colour figures. We report the discovery of optical and X-ray synchrotron emission from the brighter radio jet in galaxy NGC 7385 using data from HST and Chandra. The jet has a projected length of 5 kpc and a similar morphology to other known optical jets in low-power radio galaxies. We also report a strong jet-cloud interaction which appears to be deflecting the counter-jet and causing a reversal in its direction.

We have undertaken a Spitzer campaign to measure the IR structures and spectra of low-redshift 3CRR radio galaxies. The results show that the 3.6 - 160 micron infrared properties vary systematically with integrated source power, and so demonstrate that contemporary core activity is characteristic of the behaviour of sources over their lifetimes. IR synchrotron emission is seen from jets and hotspots in some cases. Thermal emission is found from a jet/gas interaction in NGC 7385. Most of the near-IR integrated colours of the low-redshift 3CRR radio galaxies are similar to those of passive galaxies, so that IR colours are poor indicators of radio activity., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We have found that the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) in Abell~85, Holm 15A, displays the largest core so far known. Its cusp radius, $r_{\gamma} = 4.57 \pm 0.06$ kpc ($4.26^{\prime\prime}\pm 0.06^{\prime\prime}$), is more than 18 times larger than the mean for BCGs, and $\geq1$ kpc larger than A2261-BCG, hitherto the largest-cored BCG (Postman, Lauer, Donahue, et al. 2012) Holm 15A hosts the luminous amorphous radio source 0039-095B and has the optical signature of a LINER. Scaling laws indicate that this core could host a supermassive black hole (SMBH) of mass $M_{\bullet}\thicksim (10^{9}-10^{11})\,M_{\odot}$. We present the results of an X-ray follow-up campaign targeting 10 Weak Lensing (WL) selected galaxy clusters from a Subaru WL survey. Eight clusters were studied with dedicated Chandra pointings, whereas archival X-ray data were used for the remaining two clusters. The WL clusters appear to fit the same scaling relation between X-ray luminosity and temperature as X-ray selected clusters. However, when we consider the luminosity-mass relation, the WL selected clusters appear underluminous by a factor 3.9$\pm$0.9 (or, alternatively, more massive by 2.9$\pm$0.2), compared to X-ray selected clusters. Only by considering various observational effects that could potentially bias WL masses, can this difference be reconciled. We used X-ray imaging data to quantify the dynamical state of the clusters and found that one of the clusters appears dynamically relaxed, and two of the clusters host a cool core, consistent with Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect selected clusters.
