In this qualitative case study, we investigated how active learning strategies discussed and practiced in the face-to-face classroom context were transferred to an online modality by four faculty fellows of Indiana University's Mosaic Faculty Fellows Program. This program is intended to support faculty members' perception of how classroom space influences approaches to active learning. In 2020, all faculty members had to transition their courses online, and the semistructured interview findings of this study showed that faculty members used three online space types to support the continued use of active learning approaches when transitioning to online: (1) core space to replicate existing practices (e.g., video conference and text), (2) shared space to supplement existing practices, and (3) augmented space to transform existing practices (e.g., activities that merge the physical world and online space). We concluded that preparing faculty members to effectively use active learning approaches in in-person classrooms can also guide active learning approaches in online teaching environments. The study also discussed the need for professional development programs that address support for active learning in different modalities by considering augmented space and its impact on student engagement.

In this article, we present a revised version of the active learning classroom observation tool (ALCOT), designed in 2015, to support instructor reflection on instructional approaches applied within active learning classrooms. The design of active learning classrooms and teaching approaches within them have changed significantly since the initial development of the ALCOT. Inspired by these changes, we have decided to update the ALCOT to address the new developments in classroom designs and instruction. In addition to updates to the ALCOT, this article also lays out ways the new ALCOT can be used for additional avenues of faculty support. It also suggests how classroom observation can facilitate conversation among a variety of stakeholders that could contribute to broad institutional change regarding active learning and active learning classrooms.

Introducing new technologies to faculty members provides opportunities to reconstruct the ways they teach, evaluate, interact, and communicate. Yet, the personal and organisational perceptions regarding the nature of technology can filter, frame, and guide faculty's interactions with technology. In this case study conducted in a faculty professional development context, we carried out a thematic analysis to explore the technological interpretations in the faculty's definitions of technology. We analysed 32 definitions through Mitcham's technological frames categories, and it was observed that faculty attached various meanings to technology in terms of (1) object, (2) knowledge, (3) activity, and (4) volition perspectives. The role of self-interactions and social interactions in higher education has been discussed regarding the formation of technological understanding.

We describe four design principles that guide the Mosaic Fellows Program at Indiana University, a program focused on supporting faculty pedagogy in active learning spaces. The design principles focus on exploring a variety of classrooms with faculty Fellows, engaging Fellows' individual goals, creating shared learning experiences, and encouraging Fellows to share their insights with a larger university audience to support institutional change. We discuss each design principle in turn, explaining the rationale behind the principle, and then give specific examples of the design principle in practice. We conclude with implications for faculty development about active learning spaces at other institutions.

Increasingly, Active Learning Classrooms (ALCs) are being designed and built by higher education institutions to support instructors in adopting and implementing active learning pedagogies. In this study, we explore how instructors perceive changes in their teaching after teaching in ALCs. Our study focuses on the perceptions of faculty members who have completed a year-long professional development around teaching in ALCs. We conduct place-based interviews with nine such faculty members to examine their perceptions of their changing pedagogies of specific ALCs. Using thematic analysis, we categorized faculty's perceptions of the affordances of ALCs for their teaching and student learning into three major themes: (1) ALCs afford visibility and instructor presence, (2) ALCs afford better feedback and apprenticeship, and (3) ALCs afford intimate conversations and student dialogue. Finally, we draw on data from the interviews to explicate each theme in turn before discussing commonalities and tensions among the themes. These three themes present an entry point for professional development designers, instructors, and other institutional stakeholders to understand how instructors orient active learning pedagogues to learning spaces.

Centers for Teaching and Learning (CTLs) have long offered the service of classroom observations to instructors who seek to improve in-class teaching effectiveness. Classroom observations, however, have not explicitly addressed the recent emergence of "active learning classrooms," classrooms that are designed to support active and collaborative learning approaches. Given the absence of an observation protocol explicitly designed to address instructional approaches within active learning classrooms, in spring and fall of 2015, CTL faculty developers and researchers at Indiana University-Bloomington created the Active Learning Classroom Observation Tool (ALCOT). The ALCOT allows a holistic consideration of the learning experience, providing a view to the instructor's attempt to combine the spatial and technological affordances of a classroom with active and collaborative learning pedagogies. Faculty developers and researchers developed and piloted the Active Learning Classroom Observation Tool to elicit thoughtful reflection and meaningful feedback on teaching and learning undertaken within these new learning spaces.
