Abstract

This thesis is motivated by a desire to understand the factors that contribute to conflict among global evangelical mission leaders and mission organizations. It does so by exploring four evangelical movements that exercised significant global influence during the period from 1974 to the year 2000. Each of these organizations—the Lausanne Movement, the World Evangelical Fellowship, the International Fellowship of Evangelical Mission Theologians (INFEMIT), and the AD 2000 Movement—espoused a commitment to unity and collaboration. Yet an inquiry into the interactions among these four entities reveals that conflict is at the heart of the story. Furthermore, an appraisal of church history and biblical history underscores that conflict and fragmentation are part of our shared experience. The study is carried out by means of archival research related to the four institutions coupled with interviews with 40 of their leaders. The narrative history that is developed is then analysed in terms of leadership dynamics, theological distinctives, and organizational and cultural dimensions. This study then seeks to discover ways in which a more thorough understanding of the nature and cause of conflict can provide redemptive value for the building of trust among evangelical leaders and for strengthening the cause of Christian witness in the world.

14. The t(X;18)(p11.2;q11.2) translocation found in human synovial sarcomas involves two distinct loci on the X chromosome

Abstract

A high proportion of synovial sarcomas contain the reciprocal translocation t(X;18)(p11.2;q11.2). We have previously localized the breakpoint on the X chromosome between the X chromosome marker DXS255 and an ornithine aminotransferase (OAT) pseudogene region designated OATL2. Subsequently by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) we provided evidence that YACs corresponding to the OATL2 locus spanned the break-point. In order to confirm the position of this breakpoint cosmids corresponding to the OATL2 region were isolated. Most of these cosmids mapped to four cosmid contigs designated C1-C4. Analysis of two contigs, C1- and C4, using FISH established that in four of six synovial sarcomas examined the breakpoint occurs between these two contigs: C1 lies distal to the break-point while C4 is proximal. In contrast we provide evidence that the breakpoint in the remaining two tumours mapped to a second pseudogene region called OATL1 that is telomeric to the OATL2 locus. This heterogeneity of the breakpoint position on the X chromosome explains why in previous mapping studies there have been discrepancies between the results obtained by different laboratories.
