Abstract

The interest in natural antioxidants for the development of active food packaging is increasing, since lipid oxidation has a negative impact on food quality and people's living standards are changing. The aim of this work was to obtain Malpighia emarginata DC pomace extract (MEPE), as well as to develop poly(lactic acid) (PLA)‐based films with antioxidant activity, through the incorporation of MEPE. MEPE showed antioxidant activity through the DPPH and ABTS assays, 127.16 ± 9.70 μmol TEAC g−1 extract and 322.84 ± 19.38 μmol TEAC g−1 extract, respectively. The HPLC quantification revealed that quercetin and isorhamnetin were found at concentrations of 244.77 ± 8.42 and 707.20 ± 23.17 μg g−1, respectively. The properties of the films were influenced by the presence of MEPE, which caused a plasticizing effect on the PLA film, reducing the tensile strength and Young's modulus and increasing the elongation at break and water vapour permeability. The antioxidant property test (DPPH and ABTS) of the films was shown to be improved with the addition of MEPE. Despite changes in the film properties, they have potential for application as active food packaging. This work showed the potential utilization of agriculture pomace to produce antioxidant additive and its application as antioxidant in active food packaging, since they showed excellent antioxidant activity in radical scavenging activity tests. Abstract

The potential of biotechnology for research and development (R & D) in various areas of knowledge is reflected in actions for the promotion of technological innovation in Brazil from the demands of productive sectors and health. Considering the Brazilian scenario regarding the weaknesses and strengths of the Health Industrial Complex (HIC), the aim of this study was to analyze the current stage of implementation of the National Biotechnology Development Policy (PDB) in the State of Bahia, in the sector of human health, considering the structural actions - (i) investments, (ii) human resources, (iii) infrastructure. Through an exploratory descriptive study were identified developments, in particular the existence of programs "Bahia Inovação" and "Empreende Bahia" that stimulates entrepreneurship and technological innovation. However, in spite of the existing scientific and technological capacity in the state, there are few projects submitted and funded in the field of biotechnology.

Apesar de ser descrita uma ampla ocorrência de Trypanosoma em répteis, em sua maioria lagartos e mais raramente em serpentes, pouco se sabe a respeito da ocorrência desse parasito em jiboias (Boa constrictor), bem como os efeitos do parasitismo na saúde dos animais. Diante da escassez de informação a respeito da ocorrência de Trypanosoma em serpentes da região Nordeste do Brasil, o presente estudo teve como objetivo investigar a ocorrência deste parasito em jiboias dos estados da Bahia e Sergipe, bem como avaliar as consequências fisiológicas da infecção e caracterizar molecularmente os parasitos isolados. Para isso, foram analisadas 61 jiboias, 47 na Bahia e 14 em Sergipe. Foi realizada a coleta de sangue das serpentes, sendo essas amostras submetidas a análise microscópica para identificação de formas flagelares, exames de hemograma, e também o soro foi obtido para realização de análises de bioquímica clínica. Foi realizada hemocultura com o intuito de isolar o parasito e caracterizá-lo por meio da técnica de PCR. A partir da análise de esfregaço sanguíneo, foram identificados 9 animais positivos, 01 no estado da Bahia e 08 em Sergipe.
