Eccentric fixation is a commonly used adaptive strategy in patients with central vision loss. A common complaint in patients with central vision loss is reading difficulty. The mechanisms as to how and why eccentric fixation develops comprise an exciting area of research. As we better understand this phenomenon, we may apply these findings to the clinical setting and in particular to reading rehabilitation. The feeding trials were carried out with freshwater crayfish ( Procambarus clarkii) to evaluate the three feed stimulants betaine ( Bet), squid extract ( SE) and squid meal ( SM) upon fish meal ( FM) diets or biofeed ( BF) diets in which FM were partially replaced by BF. Results showed the three feed stimulants had no significant effect on growth. By the relative concentration of markers in the faeces and diets, the preference for each diet was estimated, and the best stimulant was the mixture of Bet, SE and SM. As FM replaced by BF increased, added with the mixture, the relative weight gain showed an increasing trend, but decreased significantly by 30% replacement. With the substitution increasing, trypsin activities increased, whereas decreased too upon 30% substitution. Less than 30% replacement, there was no significant effect on muscle proximate composition, intestine amylase activities and serum haemocyanin contents, except the drop of lipid. The results indicated that the mixture of Bet, SE and SM could perform well as a feed stimulant. And with the addition of the mixture, FM in the diet could make about no more than 20% saving without any adverse effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: An efficient and sustainable biomass feedstock production system is critical for the success of the biomass based energy sector. An integrated systems analysis framework to coordinate various feedstock production related activities is, therefore, highly desirable. This article presents research conducted towards the creation of such a framework. A breadth level mixed integer linear programming model, named BioFeed, is proposed that simulates different feedstock production operations such as harvesting, packing, storage, handling and transportation, with the objective of determining the optimal system level configuration on a regional basis. The decision variables include the design/planning as well as management level decisions. The model was applied to a case study of switchgrass production as an energy crop in southern Illinois. The results illustrated that the total cost varied between 45 and 49 $ Mg−1 depending on the collection area and the sustainable biorefinery capacity was about 1.4 Gg d−1. The transportation fleet consisted of 66 trucks and the average utilization of the fleet was 86%. On-farm covered storage of biomass was highly beneficial for the system. Lack of on-farm open storage and centralized storage reduced the system profit by 17% and 5%, respectively. Increase in the fraction of larger farms within the system reduced the cost and increased the biorefinery capacity, suggesting that co-operative farming is beneficial. The optimization of the harvesting schedule led to 30% increase in the total profit. Sensitivity analysis showed that the reduction in truck idling time as well as increase in baling throughput and output density significantly increased the profit. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The benefits of particle size reduction and mechanical densification of biomass feedstock for storage, transportation, and handling must be assessed in relation to the systemic costs and energy consumption incurred due to these operations. The goal of this work was to determine the optimal levels of size reduction and densification through a combination of modeling and experimental studies. Size reduction and densification data for Miscanthus and switchgrass were generated using a two-stage grinding process and the energy requirement and bulk densities for the particle sizes between 1 mm and 25.4 mm were determined. Increase in bulk density through compression by a pressure of 1.2 MPa was also measured. These data were used within BioFeed, a system-level optimization model, to simulate scenarios capturing the possibilities of performing size reduction and densification at various stages of the supply chain. Simulation results assuming size reduction at farms showed that the optimal particle size range for both Miscanthus and switchgrass was 4-6 mm, with the optimal costs of $54.65 Mg-1 and $60.77 Mg-1 for Miscanthus and switchgrass, respectively. Higher hammer mill throughput and lower storage costs strongly impacted the total costs for different particle sizes. Size reduction and densification of biomass at the county-specific centralized storage and pre-processing facilities could reduce the costs by as much as $6.34 Mg-1 for Miscanthus and $20.13 Mg-1 for switchgrass over the base case.
