On November 2015, Samarco tailings dam in Mariana, Minas Gerais, Brazil, collapsed, releasing 62 million tons of tailings that advanced through 668 km of the Doce River and adjacent floodplain. Although the collapse was the worst environmental disaster in Brazil, little is known about its consequences to aquatic biota. Here we evaluate the effects of the tailings mudflow on metal and As concentration in fish and how concentration correlates with water and fish characteristics. We quantified semitotal amounts of Ag, Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn in fish muscle tissue using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) in 255 individuals (34 species) sampled in unaffected and affected areas along the Doce River basin. Arsenic and Hg were higher in fish from affected sites, likely due to turbulent mixing of previously sedimented material by the giant tailings wave. Silver and Zn concentrations were higher in unaffected sites. Arsenic concentration in Geophagus brasiliensis decreased with increasing fish weight. Copper and Zn decreased with increasing fish weight considering the whole assembly of fish. The tailings mudflow increased water conductivity, and conductivity increased Al concentration in fish, so we expected a larger Al concentration in fishes from affected sites. However, the observed Al concentration in fishes from affected sites was lower than expected by water conductivity. Thus, the tailings mudflow reduced Al uptake or accumulation in fishes. Mercury decreased with increasing water conductivity in both unaffected and affected sites considering all species and in G. brasiliensis alone. Despite the relatively low concentration range of metals and As found in fish, fishes from sites affected by the Fe ore tailings mudflow showed higher As and Hg concentration, compared to fishes from unaffected sites. The higher As and Hg in affected sites require further detailed monitoring to ensure safeguards of human health by fishing activity along the Doce River. Aqui avaliamos os efeitos do fluxo de lama de rejeitos sobre a bioacumulação de metais e arsênio em várias espécies de peixes coletadas na bacia do rio Doce e como a bioacumulação se correlaciona com as características da água e dos peixes. Quantificamos as quantidades semitotais de Ag, Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb e Zn no tecido muscular de peixes usando ICP-MS em um total de 255 indivíduos (representando 34 espécies), amostrados em locais não afetados e afetados ao longo da bacia do rio Doce. As concentrações de As e Hg foram maiores nos peixes dos locais afetados, provavelmente devido à mistura turbulenta de material previamente sedimentado pela onda gigante de rejeitos. As concentrações de Ag e Zn foram maiores nos peixes de locais não afetados. A concentração de As na espécie mais abundante nos locais não afetados e afetados (Geophagus brasiliensis) diminuiu com o aumento do peso dos peixes. A concentração de Cu e Zn diminuiu com o aumento do peso dos peixes, considerando toda a assembleia de espécies. O fluxo de lama de rejeitos aumentou a condutividade da água e a condutividade aumentou a concentração de Al nos peixes, portanto esperávamos uma maior concentração de Al nos peixes de locais afetados. No entanto, a concentração de Al observada nos peixes de locais afetados foi menor do que o esperado pela condutividade da água. Assim, o fluxo de lama de rejeitos reduziu a assimilação ou o acúmulo de Al nos peixes. O mercúrio diminuiu com o aumento da condutividade da água nos locais não afetados e afetados, considerando todas as espécies e também dentro de G. brasiliensis. Trace metals bioaccumulate in aquatic organisms and some of them biomagnify through food webs, posing a threat to the organisms or their human consumers. Although the trophodynamics of many trace metals is well known in the northern hemisphere, much less is known about metals in aquatic food webs from cold and remote coastal zones of the southern hemisphere. To fill this gap, we investigated the trophodynamics of Al, Co, Cr, Li, Mo, Ni, Sr, and V, which were measured in marine macroinvertebrates and fishes from inshore and offshore locations in each of the Chilean Patagonia and the Antarctic Peninsula area. In Patagonia, there was biodilution of these metals across the whole food web, while biomagnification of Li and Ni was significantly found across the lower food web at the offshore site. In Antarctica, significant biodilution of Al, Li, Ni, Mo, Sr and V occurred through the whole food web for the inshore site, but no tendency (biodilution or biomagnification) was found (p > 0.05) across the organisms at lower trophic levels for the offshore site. Our data suggest that the geographic location and species influences the trophodynamics of these trace elements and expand our understanding of metal fate in remote locations of the southern hemisphere.

As novel alternatives to legacy poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), perfluoroalkyl ether carboxylic acids (PFECAs) have been widely detected in the environment; however, there is limited information and knowledge regarding their bioaccumulation and trophic transfer behavior along the food chain. This research presents the first known published data on the bioaccumulation and trophic transfer characteristics of PFECAs in a source-impacted estuary. Elevated PFECA concentrations were observed in organisms (for instance, conch, with perfluoro-2-methoxyacetic acid (PFMOAA) concentration reaches up to 16 700 ng/g dry weight (dw)), indicating exposure risks to the consumers. Conch can be acted as a potential environmental bioindicator of PFMOAA. PFMOAA, hexafluoropropylene oxide trimer acid (HFPO-TrA) and PFOA were predominant detected in biotas. On the basis of trophic magnification factors (TMFs), PFECAs with ≥6 perfluorinated carbons (HFPO-TrA, hexafluoropropylene oxide tetramer acid (HFPO-TeA) and perfluoro (3, 5, 7, 9, 11-pentaoxadodecanoic) acid (PFO5DoA)) could be biomagnified along the food chain (TMF > 1), while PFMOAA with the least perfluorinated carbons undergone biodilution (TMF < 1). As seafood is an important dietary source of protein to human, there is a potential health risk related to the consuming polluted aquatic products.

Algal blooms bring massive amounts of algal organic matter (AOM) into eutrophic lakes, which influences microbial methylmercury (MeHg) production. However, because of the complexity of AOM and its dynamic changes during algal decomposition, the relationship between AOM and microbial Hg methylators remains poorly understood, which hinders predicting MeHg production and its bioaccumulation in eutrophic shallow lakes. To address that, we explored the impacts of AOM on microbial Hg methylators and MeHg production by characterizing dissolved organic matter with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS) and three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy and quantifying the microbial Hg methylation gene hgcA. We first reveal that the predominance of methanogens, facilitated by eutrophication-induced carbon input, could drive MeHg production in lake water. Specifically, bioavailable components of AOM (i.e., CHONs such as aromatic proteins and soluble microbial byproduct-like materials) increased the abundances (Archaea-hgcA gene: 438-2240% higher) and activities (net CH4 production: 16.0-44.4% higher) of Archaea (e.g., methanogens). These in turn led to enhanced dissolved MeHg levels (24.3-15,918% higher) for three major eutrophic shallow lakes in China. Nevertheless, our model results indicate that AOM-facilitated MeHg production could be offset by AOM-induced MeHg biodilution under eutrophication. Our study would help reduce uncertainties in predicting MeHg production, providing a basis for mitigating the MeHg risk in eutrophic lakes.

Trophic transfer of contaminants dictates concentrations and potential toxic effects in top predators, yet biomagnification behaviour of many trace elements is poorly understood. We examined concentrations of vanadium and thallium, two globally-distributed and anthropogenically-enriched elements, in a food web of the Slave River, Northwest Territories, Canada. We found that tissue concentrations of both elements declined with increasing trophic position as measured by δ15N. Slopes of log [element] versus δ15N regressions were both negative, with a steeper slope for V (-0.369) compared with Tl (-0.099). These slopes correspond to declines of 94% with each step in the food chain for V and 54% with each step in the food chain for Tl. This biodilution behaviour for both elements meant that concentrations in fish were well below values considered to be of concern for the health of fish-eating consumers. Further study of these elements in food webs is needed to allow a fuller understanding of biomagnification patterns across a range of species and systems.

This study investigated the trophic transfer of four common toxic metals (Cd, Cr, Cu and Hg) in the food web and assessed their potential ecological risks in Laizhou Bay, a spawning area for fishery populations in the Bohai Sea, North China. Based on the predation relations of 43 species that were representatives of the main trophic levels (TLs), a simplified food web was constructed using stomach content analysis and stable nitrogen isotope ratio (δ15N) analysis. Using copepods as the baseline species (TL = 2.00), the TLs of the organisms ranged from 1.96 (Polychaeta) to 4.47 (Japanese flounder) and showed the following ranking order: predatory pelagic or demersal fish > medium demersal fish > crustacean, cephalopod, small pelagic or demersal fish > zooplankton and Polychaeta. The metals showed different trophic transfer behaviors in the food web. Hg and Cr tended to be efficiently biomagnified between TLs, along the main food chains and in the food web. Cu biodiluted significantly with increasing TLs, while Cd showed no biomagnification or biodilution trends in the food web. At low or moderate levels of Cd and Hg, potential ecological risks were detected in the water and sediments at only a few sites, indicating their overall low ecological risks in the environment. The metals in the important fishery species (four top predatory fish, two cephalopods and eight crustaceans) were below the permissible limits, except for Cd in octopus and paddle crab, which reached or exceeded the most restrictive criteria. Based on the provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) criteria, the safe weekly human consumption levels by humans of the predatory fish, cephalopods and crustaceans were species-specific (0.20–4.44 kg) and should be cautiously assessed.

Background Despite specific restrictions on their production and use, per- and polyfluoralkyl substances (PFAS) are still omnipresent in the environment, including aquatic ecosystems. Most biomonitoring studies have investigated the PFAS concentrations in indigenous organisms, whereas active biomonitoring has only been used sporadically. In the present study, accumulated PFAS concentrations were measured in indigenous fish, European perch (Perca fluviatilis) and European eel (Anguilla anguilla), and in translocated freshwater mussels (Dreissena bugensis and Corbicula fluminea) at 44 sampling locations within the main water basins of Flanders, the northern part of Belgium. Finally, both human health risk and ecological risk were assessed based on accumulated concentrations in fish muscle. Results Among locations, ΣPFAS concentrations ranged from 8.56–157 ng/g ww (median: 22.4 ng/g ww) in mussels, 5.22–67.8 ng/g ww (median: 20.8 ng/g ww) in perch, and 5.73–68.8 ng/g ww (median: 22.1 ng/g ww) in eel. Concentrations of PFOA and PFTeDA were higher in mussels compared to fish, whereas for PFDA and PFUnDA the opposite was true. A comparison of concentrations on a wet weight basis between both fish species showed significantly higher PFDoDA, PFTrDA, PFTeDA and PFOA concentrations in eel compared to perch and significantly higher concentrations of PFDA and PFOS in perch. In mussels, PFAS profiles were dominated by PFOA and showed a higher relative contribution of short-chained PFAS, while PFAS profiles in fish were dominated by PFOS. Furthermore, all mussel species clearly occupied a lower trophic level than both fish species, based on a stable isotope analysis. Conclusions Biomagnification of PFDA, PFUnDA and PFOS and biodilution of PFOA and PFTeDA were observed. Translocated mussels have been proven suitable to determine which PFAS are present in indigenous fish, since similar PFAS profiles were measured in all biota. Finally, mean PFAS concentrations in fish did pose a human health risk for eel, although tolerable daily intake values for perch were close to the reported daily consumption rates in Belgium and exceeded them in highly contaminated locations. Based on the ecological risk of PFOS, the standard was exceeded at about half of the sampling locations (44% for perch and 58% for eel).

Here, we evaluated the levels of As, Hg, Pb, and Cd in shark meat sold along the Amazon Coast of Brazil and used nitrogen stable isotope values to determine trophic position and to assess element biomagnification. From market samples, a total of 13 species were identified via molecular analysis, including those listed as endangered and vulnerable by the IUCN Red List. Arsenic was present in significantly higher concentrations than all other elements, followed by Hg, with the highest mean concentrations recorded in M. higmani (As: 19.46 ? 8.79 ?g/g ww) and C. acronotus (Hg: 1.12 ? 0.68 ?g/g ww). Lead and Cd were recorded at much lower levels in all species. The EWI of individual elements were above PTWI for all species when considering Hg, seven species for inorganic arsenic (iAs), and one species for Pb. The weekly consumption of 10 species should be reduced to less than 416.39 g, which is equivalent to the daily estimated fish consumption rate in the region. The mean (?SD) ?15N values of species ranged from 10.7 ? 0.51? in M. higmani to 14.2 ? 0.59? in C. porosus, indicating feeding over >1 trophic level. Arsenic was negatively correlated with ?15N values, while Hg was positively correlated indicating biodilution and biomagnification, respectively. Our results indicate that the sale and consumption of shark meat will expose consumers to potentially harmful levels of iAs and Hg, as well as contributing to the population decline of species including those that are currently categorized as threatened.

International audience; Heavy metal contamination across the food web is a growing concern because of increasing environmental discharges in industrial zones, atmospheric transport, and deposition and erosion during rainfall events. We examined the transfer pathways of chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni) through a terrestrial trophic web and investigated the potential for their bioaccumulation along the trophic chain. Soil, plants, arthropods, and vertebrates were sampled from different localities in the south of Cairo (El-Tebbin, Egypt) and the amounts of Cr and Ni from these samples were measured. We also computed a body condition index (BCI) for vertebrates to estimate individual health and fitness levels in relation to heavy metal concentrations in the liver. The levels of Cr and Ni varied significantly among the samples. Lower trophic levels showed a tendency for biomagnification, while higher trophic levels showed possible biodilution of the two heavy metals: arthropods, amphibians, and lizards concentrated more Cr and Ni than the other taxonomic groups; conversely birds and small mammals generally showed lower levels of Cr and Ni. A negative relationship was obtained when the concentrations of Cr in the soil, plant, and arthropods, and the concentrations of Ni in the wolf spider were plotted as a function of the distance to the industrial area. A significant inverse relationship was found between the Ni concentration of liver and body length, while body mass had no significant effect. Our study thus highlights the varied effects of heavy metal concentrations across a complex food web at different distances from the pollution source, and the need for further studies of their effect on multiple species in an ecosystem

After the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, the activity concentration of radionuclides in fish reached hundreds of kBq kg -1 . Determination in the dynamics of the content of radionuclides in the body of fish is necessary for the radiation protection of humans and the environment. The data presented in the literature are extremely contradictory and such large differences in the main parameters of radionuclide metabolism in fish require clarification in nature conditions. The aim of this work was to determine the rate of excretion (biological half-life) of 137 Cs from the body of silver Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio) at different water temperatures (1-29 ° С) depending on the weight of the fish (20±5 and 40±6 g ) in real conditions of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. As a result of experimental studies, the values of the biological half-life of 137 Cs for silver carp was 193-495 days at water temperature 3.7 ± 0.9 ° C and 63-92 days at water temperature 22±4 ° С were obtained. Due to an increase in the weight of fish (biodilution) at water temperatures > 13 ° C, the half-life of the activity concentration of 137 Cs in the muscle tissue of fish decreased to 39-58 day -1 . The obtained data correspond to the previously obtained values in aquarium experiments. The results obtained in this work show that the level of radioactive contamination of fish in winter will change slightly compared to summer time, which is also confirmed by experimental data obtained in aquarium experiments.

Anthropogenic activities have impacted the coastal region of Brazil. In the Paranagua estuarine complex (PEC), Cananeia-Iguape estuarine-lagoon complex (CIELC), and Santos-Sao Vicente estuarine complex (SSVEC), such activities occur across differing scales. In these estuaries, the concentrations of mercury (Hg) and stable nitrogen isotopes (δ15N) were investigated in sediments and marine organisms including benthic macrofauna, fish and cetaceans. Hg bioconcentration occurred primarily in cetaceans, polychaetes and molluscs, and reflects the impact of anthropogenic activities in the regions studied (PEC and SSVEC > CIELC). Bioaccumulation occurred in most of the studied specimens, but biodilution of Hg was observed in the trophic webs of SSVEC and CIELC. Despite measuring lower Hg levels than in studies carried out in the northern hemisphere, the results highlight potential concerns for public and environmental health in these highly productive coastal regions in the southwestern Atlantic which are important for fishing and various economic activities.

Emerging metallic contaminants (EMCs) are of concern due their presence in aquatic ecosystems and the lack of environmental regulations in several countries. This study verifies the presence of EMCs in two neotropical mangrove estuarine ecosystems (Espirito Santo Brazil) by evaluating abiotic and biotic matrices across six trophic levels (plankton, oyster, shrimp, mangrove trees, crabs and fish) and hence interrogates the trophic transfer of these elements and their possible input sources. Using the oyster Crassostrea rhizophorae as a biomonitor, ten EMCs (Bi, Ce, La, Nb, Sn, Ta, Ti, W, Y and Zr) were determined. Bi input was from iron export and pelletizing industries; Ce, La and Y inputs were mainly associated with solid waste from steel production, while Zr, Nb and Ti were related to atmospheric particulate matter emissions. EMCs were detected at various trophic levels, showing biomagnification for most of them in the Santa Cruz estuary but biodilution in Vitoria Bay. These contrasting results between the estuaries could be attributed to different pollution degrees, needing further research to be fully understood. This is the first report demonstrating EMCs trophic pathways in situ, constituting an essential baseline for future research and safety regulations involving EMCs in the environment.

The Swan Lagoon is a national nature reserve and an important spawning ground in China. In this study, we evaluated the concentration of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn) in different aquatic organisms (aquatic plants, crustaceans, mollusks, and fish), in order to examine their trophic transfer in food web. The results showed that the concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn were considerably higher in mollusks, whereas Cr concentrations were significantly higher in aquatic plants than in mollusks, crustaceans, and fish (p 0.01). Heavy metals exhibit different patterns of trophic transfer in food web. Cd, Cr, Cu, and Pb tended to be efficiently biodiluted with increasing trophic levels in food web (trophic magnification factor, TMF 1; p 0.05). The concentration of Zn increased with increasing trophic level; however, it exhibited a TMF of only 1.03, and was not significantly correlated with δ

Rio Tercero Reservoir (RTR) is the largest artificial reservoir in the province of Cordoba (Argentina). Water, sediment, plankton, shrimp (Palaemonetes argentinus), and fish (Odontesthes bonariensis) were collected during the wet season (WS) and dry season (DS) from this reservoir. Concentrations of Ag, Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, P, Pb, Se, U, and Zn were determined to investigate their respective bioaccumulation pattern and trophic transfer in the food chain. Results showed that their concentrations in water were rather low except Pb, which exceed the limits considered as hazardous for aquatic life. The enrichment factor (EF) in sediments showed that most of the element were derived from anthropogenic sources. Furthermore, the bioaccumulation factor (BAF) determined that the elements undergo bioaccumulation, especially in organisms such as plankton. The invertebrates were characterized by the highest BAF for Cu, P, and Zn in both seasons; Ag, As, and Hg during WS; and Se during DS. Fish muscle registered the highest BAF for Hg (DS) and Se (WS). A significant decrease in Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu (DS) Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, U, and Zn (DS) concentrations through the trophic chain was observed, indicating biodilution. Some notable exceptions were found as Cu (WS), Hg (DS), and P (both season) that showed biomagnification. Further studies are needed to establish differential behavior with different species and pollutant, particularly when the potential transfer is to edible organisms.

Trophic magnification factor (TMF) of persistent toxic substances (PTSs: Hg, PCBs, PAHs, and styrene oligomers (SOs)) in a coastal food web (12 fish and four invertebrates) was determined in Ulsan Bay, South Korea. The nitrogen stable isotope ratios (δ15N) of amino acids [δ15NGlu−Phe based on glutamic acid (δ15NGlu) and phenylalanine (δ15NPhe)] were used to estimate the trophic position (TPGlu−Phe) of organisms. The TPGlu−Phe of organisms ranged from 1.64 to 3.69, which was lower than TP estimated by δ15N of bulk particulate organic matter (TPBulk: 2.46–4.21). Mercury and CB 138, 153, 187, and 180 were biomagnified through the whole food web (TMF > 1), while other PTSs, such as PAHs and SOs were not (biodilution of SOs firstly reported). In particular, the trophic transfer of PTSs was pronounced in the resident fish (e.g., rock bream, sea perch, Korean rockfish). Of note, CB 99, 101, 118, and 183 were additionally found to be biomagnifying PTSs in these species. Thus, fish residency appears to represent an important factor in determining the TMF of PTSs in the coastal environment. Overall, δ15NGlu−Phe provided accurate TPs of organisms and could be applied to determine the trophic transfer of PTSs in coastal food webs.

This chapter examines the suite of major perturbations impacting the Everglades that have direct or indirect connections to mercury (Hg) cycling and trophic transfer leading to unacceptably high biota Hg concentrations and considers the likely efficacy of controlling a given perturbation as a management strategy for mitigating the Hg problem. From a conceptual perspective, reducing sulfate contamination in the Everglades emerges as the only viable mitigation strategy. Based on a reduced form model derived from the structural equation model presented in Chap. 6 (this volume), this chapter presents the likely response and uncertainty of Gambusia Hg concentrations to reductions in surface water sulfate concentrations.

Tsitsikamma and Sheffield Beach are two relatively pristine sites along the South African east coast representing warm temperate and subtropical biogeographic rocky shore intertidal ecosystems, respectively. Stable isotopes (δ15N and δ13C), metals and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were measured in 38 intertidal components to study biomagnification or biodilution of metals and OCPs in these marine food webs. Comparison of the four species common to both sites revealed that the highest Al, Fe and OCP concentrations were measured in intertidal organisms from Sheffield Beach and was attributed to diffuse input into the nearshore marine environment sources via estuaries and groundwater. All other metals were higher in intertidal organisms from Tsitsikamma and were attributed to the metal-rich phytoplankton blooms during upwelling events. There was no correlation between metal and OCP accumulation and dietary source (δ13C) or trophic level (δ15N). The application of trophic magnification factors (TMFs) using a relatively short benthic food chain indicated biomagnification for As, Cd, Cu, Se and Zn and biodilution of OCPs at both sites. Since these food chains represent only a small portion of the intertidal ecosystems we found limited evidence of biomagnification or biodilution of metals and OCPs across species. This was attributed to different dietary sources in the same food web and similar trophic levels being occupied by the same species in different food chains. We found that food web composition rather than temperature-based biogeographical distribution influenced trophic transfer of metals and OCPs.

Mercury (Hg) contamination in aquatic systems remains a global concern with the biomagnification of methylmercury (MeHg) through primary consumers (zooplankton) to fish and humans. In this study, total mercury (THg) and MeHg concentrations were analyzed in zooplankton collected from Baihua reservoir (Guizhou Province, China). Our results demonstrated that THg and MeHg concentrations were strongly correlated to zooplankton community and biomass composition. The THg concentration was significantly higher in micro-zooplankton compared to meso-zooplankton and macro-zooplankton, and MeHg concentration increased significantly as body size increased. Hg increases in zooplankton were influenced by the numbers of calanoid copepods and Daphnia present relative to phytoplankton and zooplankton biomass. Many zooplankton taxa in the three size-fractions were affected by THg exposure. The biomasses of Bosmina longirostris, Thermocyclops brevifurcatus, Asplanchna priodonta and Cyclops vicinus vicinus were positively correlated with Hg accumulation, while Daphnia hyalina, and Phyllodiaptomus tunguidus had a negative association. THg and MeHg bioaccumulation factors were correlated with phosphorus and total nitrogen concentration, zooplankton biomass, and chlorophyll-a concentration. Phosphorus loading was associated with increased THg and MeHg accumulation in the zooplankton highlighting biomagification with eutrophication. Chlorophyll-a levels were not correlated to THg and MeHg accumulation in zooplankton when phytoplankton densities were >107 cells L−1 and chlorophyll-a concentrations μg L − 1 . This finding contradicts the idea of MeHg biodilution with increased algae biomass. However, changes in the phytoplankton species and biomass altered the availability of food for zooplankton, particularly micro-zooplankton and macro-zooplankton. Ultimately, the bioaccumulation of MeHg and THg across lower trophic levels was based more on the availability of preferred food resources than on total biological productivity.

Concentrations of 27 metals and elements were investigated in the tissues of 28 demersal and pelagic marine fish species from the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. The analysis indicated highest concentrations of accumulation for the majority of elements in the gills, liver, and scales; whereas, lowest assimilation of elements was reported in the muscle. Pelagic fish accumulated higher concentrations of elements than demersal fish. An inverse correlation due to the growth dilution effect was revealed among element concentrations in the gills, liver, muscle, and skin tissues, and fish size. Patterns of biomagnification for Cs solely were recorded in the muscle and patterns of biodilution for most elements were evident in the gills, liver, muscle, and skin tissues. A positive correlation was determined between trophic level and element concentrations in the scales which could not only be associated with fish diet, but also with metal concentrations in the ambient environment and scales size.

Benthic periphytic biofilms are important food sources at the base of aquatic ecosystems. These biofilms also sit at the interface of oxic waters and hypoxic sediments, and can be influenced by or influence trace element speciation. In the present study, we compared arsenic (As) enrichment in periphyton exposed to arsenate (As[V]) or arsenite (As[III]) (20 μg/L, static renewal, 7 d), and we found similar accumulation patterns of total As (101 ± 27 and 88 ± 22 mg kg−1 dry wt, respectively). Periphyton As was 6281- and 6684-fold higher than their aqueous exposures and occurred primarily as As(V). When these biofilms were fed to larval mayflies, similar total As tissue concentrations (13.9 and 14.6 mg kg−1 dry wt, respectively) were observed, revealing significant biodilution (∼ 10% of their dietary concentrations). Finally, we investigated the influence of aeration and periphyton presence on As speciation in solutions and solid phases treated with As(III). Predominantly As(III) solutions were slowly oxidized over a 7-d time period, in the absence of periphyton, and aeration did not strongly affect oxidation rates. However, in the presence of periphyton, solution and solid-phase analyses (by microscale x-ray absorption spectroscopy) showed rapid As(III) oxidation to As(V) and an increasing proportion of organo-As forming over time. Thus periphyton plays several roles in As environmental behavior: 1) decreasing total dissolved As concentrations via abiotic and biotic accumulation, 2) rapidly oxidizing As(III) to As(V), 3) effluxing organo-As forms into solution, and 4) limiting trophic transfer to aquatic grazers. To determine whether the bioavailability of trace elements derived from coal ash leachates varies with the geochemical conditions associated with their formation, we quantified periphyton bioaccumulation and subsequent trophic transfer to the mayfly Neocloeon triangulifer. Oxic ash incubations favored periphyton uptake of arsenic, selenium, strontium, and manganese, whereas anoxic incubations favored periphyton uptake of uranium. The foundation of methylmercury (MeHg) bioaccumulation in aquatic systems is uptake and trophic transfer into phytoplankton and zooplankton. Phytoplankton and zooplankton samples were collected seasonally from Long Island Sound (LIS) and its adjacent shelf waters, located along the northeast coast of the United States. Phytoplankton samples were size fractioned into 0.2–5 μm, 5–20 μm, and seston of > 20 μm. Average phytoplankton MeHg concentrations were 0.01–1.5 pmol g−1 (wet weight), and MeHg bioconcentration factors (logBCF) ranged from 2.5 to 5.5. There was higher MeHg concentration and logBCF values with increasing phytoplankton size. Zooplankton samples were size fractioned into 0.2–0.5 mm, 0.5–1.0 mm, 1.0–2.0 mm, and > 2.0 mm classes and analyzed for Hg and MeHg as well as carbon (δ13C), nitrogen (δ15N), and sulfur (δ34S) isotopes. The %MeHg in organisms was highest in the > 2.0 mm size class for coastal LIS and shelf species, indicating higher MeHg bioaccumulation with increasing zooplankton sizes. Eastern LIS zooplankton populations yielded higher overall Hg accumulation than western LIS populations, in alignment with phytoplankton fractions. Seasonal differences were evident for plankton %MeHg, although only ELIS displayed an increase in summertime %MeHg throughout the fractions. The results suggest the importance of biodilution in determining plankton MeHg concentrations. The δ13C values infer that zooplankton were opportunistically feeding on food containing variable levels of Hg and MeHg. The δ15N isotopes indicated enrichment characteristic of anthropogenic input in populations at the western end of LIS. The δ34S isotopes signified that organisms were primarily feeding on pelagic plankton.

To determine distributions, bioaccumulation, and trophic transfer of freshwater cyanobacterial toxins such as microcystins (MCs), surface water, suspended solids, sediments, and coastal organisms were collected from seven stations in inner and outer regions of the estuary dam in the Geum River Estuary in June and July 2017. Concentrations of MC variants (MC-LR, -RR, and -YR) in the multimedia samples were analyzed using a HPLC-MS/MS. Trophic position (TP) of organisms (fish, bivalve, gastropod, decapod, and polychaete) was determined by nitrogen stable isotope analyses of both bulk tissues and amino acids. From July to August 2017, great concentrations of MCs were detected in discharged freshwater ranging from 0.4 to 75 μg L−1. Considerable amounts of MCs are delivered to the Geum River Estuary in summer season. MCs spread far away as dissolved phases (18.7–49.5 ng L−1) in July when large amount of freshwater was discharged during the rainy season. Concentrations of MCs in marine organisms varied among species, ranging from 40 to 870 ng g−1 dw. Bioaccumulated MCs tend to decrease with increasing TP of organisms, suggesting that MCs are biodiluted through the marine food web. Compound-specific isotope analysis (nitrogen of amino acids) provides more reliable TPs compared with those by bulk isotope analysis in a closed estuary (such as the Geum River Estuary) with large fluctuations in the isotope ratio of primary producers. The transmission and accumulation of trace metals in marine food webs have a profound influence on the structure and function of marine environment. In order to quantitatively assess the trophic transfer behaviors of eight common metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn) in simplified five-trophic level marine food webs, a total of 9929 biological samples from 61 studies published between 2000 and 2019, involving 154 sampling sites of 33 countries/regions, were re-compiled using meta-analysis. Based on concentration-trophic level weighted linear regression and predator/prey comparison, the food web magnification factor (FWMF) and the biomagnification factor (BMF) were calculated, respectively. The results showed dissimilar trophic transfer behaviors of these metals in global marine food webs, in which As and Ni tended to be efficiently biodiluted with increasing trophic levels (FWMFs 1, p 0.01), while Hg, Pb and Zn trophically biomagnified (FWMFs 1, p 0.05). However, Cd, Cr and Cu presented no biomagnification or biodilution trend (p 0.05). The values of FWMFs were ranked as: Hg (2.01) Pb (1.81) Zn (1.15) Cu (1.13) Cr (0.951) Cd (0.850) Ni (0.731) As (0.494). In terms of specific predator-prey relationship, Pb showed significant biodilution from tertiary consumers (TC) to top predators (BMF 1, p 0.05), whereas Cd and Cu displayed obvious biomagnification from primary consumers (PC) to secondary consumers (SC) (BMFs1, p 0.05). Additionally, when Cu and Zn were transferred from SC to TC, and primary producers to PC, clear biodilution and biomagnification effects were observed, respectively (p 0.05). Biological pump is important to control the fate and distribution of organic contaminants, particularly in temperate and cold oligotrophic waters. However, it remains largely unknown how factors affect the long-term occurrence and fate of ionogenic organic compounds in subtropical eutrophic waters. The present study aimed to assess biogeochemical and physical factors affecting the annual occurrence, bioaccumulation, and trophic transfer of 14 antibiotics through planktonic food webs in the Pearl River, a large subtropical eutrophic river in China. This was done by carrying out 1-year simultaneous field observations of antibiotic concentrations in five water column compartments and assessing the variability of bioconcentration (BCF), bioaccumulation (BAF), and biomagnification (BMF) factors, which were influenced by plankton biomass, pH and temperature of water columns. The annual mean antibiotic concentration per site ranged from 1014.66 ± 535.66 ng L−1 to 1464.63 ± 1075.91 ng L−1, and was positively correlated with phytoplankton biomass, but independent of the proximity of the sites to urban areas. Antibiotic occurrences in both phytoplankton and zooplankton were greatly influenced by a biodilution effect. The annual occurrence of antibiotics in the water column was modulated by biological pumps as well as their equilibrium partitioning, and indirectly influenced of eutrophication with pH increased with phytoplankton biomass and phytoplankton life cycling. Mercury (Hg) is a global pollutant that affects human and ecosystem health. Hg is a serious threat especially for the marine environment, in which it undergoes bioaccumulation and biomagnification, reaching elevated concentrations in fish and other seafood. The research aimed at investigating the trophodynamics of Hg in the basal links of the marine food chain: benthic macrofauna and its main food sources (i.e. suspended and sediment organic matter, micro- and macrophytobenthos). The results showed that both the amount and the origin of organic matter affected the Hg level in particular trophic groups of macrozoobenthos. The intensive inflow of terrestrial material influenced the enrichment of suspended particles and microphytobenthos in Hg, leading to increased Hg concentrations in filter-feeding macrofauna. The input of Hg-rich marine matter transported from the deeper parts of the Gulf of Gdańsk along with the near-bottom currents caused higher Hg levels in deposit feeders. The biomagnification factor (BMF) of Hg through benthic food web was dependent on environmental conditions occurring in the studied areas, in particular, factors favouring the growth and fecundity of macrofauna. Consequently, as a result of biodilution, the trophic transfer of Hg was less effective in a more productive region, despite the elevated Hg concentrations in dietary components of the macrofauna and in the surrounding environment. Understanding the trophic movement and trophic magnification factor (TMF) of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is an important criterion to assess their fate and potential effects in an aquatic ecosystem. This study investigated concentrations and trophodynamics of 16 priority PAHs in food webwb (food web comprising whole bodies) and food webm (food web containing only muscles) of total 14 species ((including plankton, shrimp, whitebait, mussels, snails, red-eared terrapin and seven other fish species) from the Dianshan Lake. Values of δ13C and δ15N were determined to assign trophic levels to organisms. In general, there was no evidence of biomagnification because of biological degradation of PAHs compounds, but only 9 PAH compounds in food webm showed a statistically significant negative relationship between trophic level and lipid normalized concentration compared to the 6 PAHs congeners in food webwb. However, TMF values of PAHs in food webm ranged from 0.32 for pyrene to 0.68 for phenanthrene compared to TMF values of food webwb ranged from 0.34 for pyrene to 0.74 for fluorene. Because of two opposing scientific views for biomagnification and biodilution of PAHs in the food web, albeit based on a rather limited number of studies, our study investigated that there is parabolic behavior of most of the PAHs. Concentrations of PAHs in the red-eared terrapin (Trachemys scripta elegans) were biodiluted which showed that this species metabolises such compounds. There was no particular relationship between Kow and TMFs of PAHs in the Dianshan Lake. Hepatobiliary system (such as gall bladder and liver) in the whole body considered to have higher bioaccumulation potential of organic compounds than extrahepatic tissue (muscles).
