The current development of industrial hemp "Cannabis Sativa L." fibers for technical textiles and industrial applications requires high-quality fibers with homogeneous properties. However, several factors have been reported to influence the fibers' intrinsic properties, including a post-harvest process known as retting. This process plays a crucial role in facilitating the mechanical extraction of fibers from hemp stems. Retting involves the degradation of the amorphous components surrounding the fiber bundles enabling their decohesion from stems. Microorganisms play a central role in mediating this bioprocess. During retting, they colonize the stems' surface. Therefore, the biochemical components of plant cell wall, acting as natural binding between fibers, undergo a breakdown through the production of microbial enzymes. Although its critical role, farmers often rely on empirical retting practices, and considering various biotic and abiotic factors, resulting in fibers with heterogenous properties. These factors limit the industrial applications of hemp fibers due to their inconsistent properties. Thus, the purpose of this review is to enhance our comprehension of how retting influences the dynamics of microbial communities and, consequently, the evolution of the biochemical properties of hemp stems throughout this process. The growth of plants hinges on a complex interplay of biochemical and physiological activities across various growth stages. These intricate processes dynamically adapt to different environmental conditions, shaping both plant development and productivity. This study explores the impact of greenhouse climate on the growth, yield, and biochemistry of winter-grown cherry tomatoes 'Cheramy F1'. A randomized complete block design (RCBD) under split plot arrangements (3 Rows) with three replications (3 plants from each row) was adopted. The data were collected on various dates during the period extending from December to March of two consecutive growing seasons in 2022 and 2023, and presented as averages. An analysis of variance was applied to statistically analyze the collected data at a confidence level of p < 0.05. The climatic conditions in the greenhouse were calculated as temperature ranging from a minimum of 10.5 °C to the maximum of 41.3 °C by an average of 21.2 °C during the vegetative stage and from 8.2 °C to 32.3 °C by an average of 20.9 °C during the fruit-bearing stage, with an average CO2 concentration fluctuated within the range of 385.61 ppm to 510.30 ppm and an average light intensity of 94.62 to 240.45 W/m². This study assessed various growth parameters such as plant height, leaf growth, stem diameter, leaf spacing, leaf count, leaf area, and inflorescence count per plant, and suggested the optimum range of greenhouse conditions for each stage. The key results of this study revealed the Progressive Growth Report (PGR), predicting daily potential growth rates of plants: plant height, 2.86 to 3.81 cm/day; growth rate of mature older leaf: 0.003988 m2/day; middle younger leaf: 0.008733 m2/day; top nascent leaf: 0.010722 m2/day; three to five leaves per week; and one inflorescence per week. In our accidental observation, we noticed unusual plant growth and yield responses because of the various growing postures and positions that the plants adopted in the greenhouse. An exceedingly significant difference among the inflorescences was found in view of their growth, productivity and biochemical composition. A non-significant interaction was found between the fruit keeping quality (shelf days), fruit height, fruit diameter, and inflorescence number. The present study results highlight the possible responses of greenhouse-grown cherry tomatoes to different ranges of temperature, light intensity, and CO2 concentrations, offering valuable insights for optimizing greenhouse cherry tomatoes cultivation. This study evaluated the biochemical composition and bioactivity of the crude extract of Sargassum dentifolium on the western coast of the Red Sea, Hurghada, Egypt. The biomass contained approximately 25.80% of total carbohydrates, and 8.40% of total protein, while lipids constitute about 2% of the total dry weight which is consistent with the low lipid content typically found in seaweeds. S. dentifolium also produces volatile and non-volatile compounds as part of its metabolic processes. The most abundant volatile compound identified was phytol, which has various industrial and pharmaceutical applications. Saturated fatty acids (SFAs) were the most frequently detected non-volatile compounds, with palmitic acid being the most common. The total phenolic content was 50.6 mg g−1 (5.06%), and the total flavonoid content was 33.9 mg g−1 (3.39%) of the total dry-weight extract. S. dentifolium extract demonstrated significant antioxidant activity, with radical scavenging properties and phenolic content that may contribute to its antioxidant efficacy. It also showed cytotoxic activity against cancer cells, particularly human hepatocellular liver carcinoma (HepG2) and human colon carcinoma (HCT-116) cells, indicating their potential as a source of anti-cancer agents. However, the extract exhibited moderate to weak antiviral activity and limited antimicrobial activity against specific microorganisms. Salinity poses a significant abiotic stress that limits plant productivity, thereby posing a serious threat to agricultural sustainability and worldwide food security. Techniques that can overcome this problem are needed. Recent focus has been placed on employing organic substances like humic acid (HA) and amino acids, including L‐tryptophan (L‐TRP), to mitigate the negative effects of salt stress on cultivated plants. Accordingly, in this research, the impact of foliar applications of HA and L‐TRP, both separately and combined, on the growth parameters and biochemical properties of spinach subjected to salt stress was investigated. In the present study, eight treatments (1. control, 2. salt (NaCl), 3. HA, 4. L‐TRP, 5. HA + NaCl, 6. L‐TRP + NaCl, 7. HA + L‐TRP, and 8. HA + L‐TRP + NaCl) were investigated. The study showed that salt stress markedly reduced several growth properties in spinach, including plant height, number of leaves, leaf dimensions, and both fresh and dry weight. Additionally, it significantly lowered contents of chlorophyll (a, b, and total), carotenoid, polyphenol, lutein, anthocyanin, polyphenol oxidase, glycine betaine, relative water content, and the antioxidant enzyme activities (ascorbate peroxidase, catalase, peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase). On the other hand, significant increases were observed in sodium, chlorine, potassium, sulfur, zinc, nickel, proline, malondialdehyde, and hydrogen peroxide levels of spinach with salinity. Individual and combined applications of HA and L‐TRP positively influenced plant growth, relative water content, activities of antioxidant enzyme, chlorophyll, and mineral contents of spinach under both normal and saline conditions. In conclusion, the combined use of HA and L‐TRP under salt stress conditions is promising in mitigating the negative impacts of salinity and can be suggested as an effective alternative approach for cultivating spinach in saline environments. Seagrass meadows consist of angiosperms that thrive fully submerged in marine environments and form distinct ecosystems. They provide essential support for many organisms, acting as nursery grounds for species of economic importance. Beyond their ecological roles, seagrasses and their associated microbiomes are rich sources of bioactive compounds with the potential to address numerous human healthcare challenges. Seagrasses produce bioactive molecules responding to physical, chemical, and biological environmental changes. These activities can treat microbe-borne diseases, skin diseases, diabetes, muscle pain, helminthic diseases, and wounds. Seagrasses also offer potential secondary metabolites that can be used for societal benefits. Despite numerous results on their presence and bioactive derivatives, only a few studies have explored the functional and therapeutic properties of secondary metabolites from seagrass. With the increasing spread of epidemics and pandemics worldwide, the demand for alternative drug sources and drug discovery has become an indispensable area of research. Seagrasses present a reliable natural source, making this an opportune moment for further exploration of their pharmacological activities with minimal side effects. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the biochemical, phytochemical, and biomedical applications of seagrasses globally over the last two decades, highlighting the prospective areas of future research for identifying biomedical applications. The density of microalgae and nutrient content have impact on the population growth rate, egg rate and nutritional values of rotifers. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different concentrations of the alga Nannochloropsis sp. (N10: 10x106, N20: 20x106, N30: 30x106 cells mL-1) on the growth, egg rate, biochemical composition and fatty acid profile of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis. To maintain a consistent algae density, an equivalent quantity was supplemented to compensate for any reduction. The study was started with three replicates, each with an initial inoculation density of 200 Brachionus individuals mL-1. The investigation spanned 5 days, during which population parameters (total number of individuals, proportion of individuals with eggs and growth rate) were calculated. After the study period, rotifers were harvested for subsequent biochemical and fatty acid analyses. Notably, the N30 group showed the highest proportions of crude protein (54.41%) and crude lipid (34.5%). The N20 group displayed the most substantial content of total fatty acids, recording a value of 70.69%. Consequently, the N30 group, with a concentration of 30x106 cells mL-1, emerged as the most proficient group, demonstrating superior performance in both population growth and biochemical composition. Microalgae are increasingly recognized as a valuable resource for bolstering sustainability in agriculture. However, current research and patents primarily focus on Chlorella spp., Scenedesmus spp., and Spirulina spp., thus leaving the vast diversity of microalgae relatively unexplored for agricultural applications. Euglena gracilis (Euglenophyta) is a microalga renowned for its resilience to diverse environmental stressors and capability to produce a variety of bioactive metabolites. This study investigated the potential of cultivating E. gracilis in piggery wastewater for nutrient recycling and as a source of beneficial biomolecules, particularly for biostimulant use. Utilizing raw wastewater diluted to 25% (P25) and pre-treated wastewater with photo-Fenton (PF), the research found that E. gracilis exhibited elevated cell density, biomass concentration, and overall cell health in both wastewaters compared to a synthetic medium (BG11-NPK). This was due to its efficient removal of nutrients, especially ammoniacal-nitrogen and phosphate, resulting in a biomass rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, amino acids, and paramylon content. The whole-cell biomass significantly enhanced the germination index of lettuce and tomato seeds compared to the water control. Additionally, it promoted cell expansion and root formation in cucumber cotyledons, exhibiting similarities to phytohormones such as gibberellin, cytokinin, and auxin. Furthermore, it is suggested that E. gracilis biomass contains molecules related to resistance to environmental stresses, particularly in tomatoes, given the enhancement in the seedling vigor index. E. gracilis exhibited remarkable adaptability to piggery wastewater, recycling nutrients and yielding biomass rich in bioactive molecules with potential as plant biostimulants. The Allium genus belongs to the family Amaryllidaceae. These species are native to the Northern Hemisphere and grow in various regions. Among Lithuania's perennial Allium plant species, the most well known and cultivated are Allium schoenoprasum L., Allium angulosum L., Allium nutans L., Allium fistulosum L., and Allium ursinum L. These Allium species are important for practical insights and are discussed in this review to present their specific features. The changing climate impacts perennial plants' agrobiological and nutritional properties, but not all kinds can adapt to new conditions, reducing species diversity. Perennial Allium species adapt well in local growing areas, but yields remain constant or may increase when the bulbs are transplanted under conditions similar to the plant's native growing location. In addition, the susceptibility of garlic to pests and pathogens also poses a serious threat to genetic resources stored in uncontrolled field collections. Since ancient times, Allium species have played a significant role in the human diet, in traditional medicine for many ailments the treatment of, and in official medicine as a supplemental ingredient. This review analyzes the nutritional importance and consumption of the perennial Allium species, their biochemical composition, and their tolerance to environmental conditions. The present work was aimed at evaluating whether females of a freshwater shrimp, Neocaridina davidi (Bouvier, 1904), allocate differentially to reproduction when reared in the presence of males and in the presence of brothers/non-brothers. Ovarian growth was evaluated in three consecutive maturation cycles. The composition of biochemical reserves was determined in the eggs (i.e., embryos) laid at the end of the first cycle, in 20-day-old juveniles produced at the end of the second cycle, and in the mature ovary of females at the end of the third cycle. When reared in the absence of males, females took longer to mature the ovaries and stored less proteins, triglycerides, and cholesterol in the mature ovary. Females reared with brothers took longer to mature the ovaries than females reared with non-brothers, with no differences in the biochemical composition of their mature ovaries. The eggs produced by females mated to brothers showed a lower carotenoid content, higher cholesterol content, and a tendency towards lower energy content than those produced by females mated to non-brothers. These results suggest that females are capable of recognizing kin and modulate primary reproductive effort, in terms of ovarian and egg biochemical composition, according to male presence and genetic relatedness. Microalgae have a great potential to change their metabolism pathway under stress condition, and nitrogen deficiency is an effective technique for maximizing lipids synthesis. This study focus on the growth performance, and biochemical composition of Tetradesmus obliquus (Turpin) M.J. Wynne cultured in different nitrogen concentrations (BG 11-Blue-Green Medium, 50% N+, 50% N-, 75% N+, 75% N-). Specific growth rate and protein content of T. obliquus decreased with nitrogen deficiency, but its lipid content was increased. Maximum specific growth rate (0.20-0.21) and protein content (47.82%, 47.62% DW-dried weight) values were obtained in 75% N+, 50% N+ medium. The highest lipid percentage was obtained in 50% N- medium. The biochemical composition of T. obliquus changes based on nitrogen concentration. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are more abundant (49.69%) in this microalga under deficient nitrogen. To obtain more lipid and PUFAs in T. obliquus, N deficiency is an effective method, but it is not applicable to protein content. T. obliquus can be used as an alternative nutritional supplement with its high PUFAs content. Biochemical analyzes were made of some varieties of barley grown in different farming systems, to establish the presence of antioxidants and other useful substances in their composition. The antioxidant capacity equivalent (vit. E), total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, total antioxidants, zinc, iron and sulfur were analyzed. The research was carried out at the Institute of Agriculture - Karnobat, Bulgaria and Helmholtz Zentrum München, German Research Center for Environmental Health, Research unit Microbe-Plant Interactions, Ingolstädterlandstr. 1, D-85764 Neuherberg, Germany. The data show significant differences in the biochemical characteristics of different barley cultivars depending on the type of cultivation. Under conventional cultivation, the cultivars showed high levels of 1000-grain weight, crude protein content, antioxidant activity, and iron and sulfur content. In organic cultivation, the cultivars have good indicators of weight per 1000 grains, antioxidant capacity, total flavonoid content and zinc content. In biodynamic cultivation, the varieties have increased values for some biochemical indicators. Sitara variety has the highest total phenolic compounds content (TPC content) and antioxidant activity (DPPH activity), while Obzor variety has the highest iron content. The degradation from larger plastic to tiny pieces permits its extensive allocation in different trophic levels and readily persists in the aquatic marshy food web. This first baseline research attempt focused on the distributional profile of Microplastic (MP) and the in-situ variation with the biochemical composition of Kol sediment residue. The density-separation method was adopted for MPs dissociation, visually counted and categorized them through a compound microscope to account for size, type and color. Further, the chemical characterizations and confirmation were done through Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and SEM-EDAX analysis. In all the examined samples micro debris was observed as prioritized complex moieties. Major MP shapes were represented as: filament (78%), thread (20%) and pellet (2%). Filament-shaped Polyethylene (PE) and Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) have been the dominant types of polymer components in the recorded MP particles. The red filament-shaped PVC has been the presiding type in the Northern Kol water of the second wet season. In the first sampling, white-colored PE filaments were prominent in the Central Kol region of the sediment with a high organic matter deposition. The multivariate statistical analyses noted the biochemical composition of Kol wetland sediment residue has an allochthonous origin and was correlated with MP morphological characters. The present investigation serves as the initial scientific data bank on MPs in the renowned agrarian, Ramsar wetland ecosystem. The relation between the MPs and sediment organic matter enhances the accumulation of small MPs threads, which could easily be injected into the residing aquatic biota. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACTThe composition and variations of sugars, organic acids and phenolic compounds of red and black currant fruits and leaves were studied during the last four weeks of ripening. The results showed that sugar content increased during berry ripening in both species. In comparison, organic acids decreased in red currant, whereas no differences between sampling dates were observed in black currant. Forty-seven individual phenolic compounds, belonging to anthocyanins, flavonols, flavanols, hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives and flavanones were identified in red currant fruits and 52 in black currant fruits by HPLC-MS analysis. In black currant fruits, the major phenolic compounds were anthocyanins (81.51–85.15% of total phenolics), which increased during ripening until the last sampling date. In both red and black currant leaves, 47 phenolic compounds were identified. The content of phenolic compounds in red currant leaves was 1.31-fold to 1.90-fold higher compared to the content in black currant leaves. The most abundant phenolics in both currant leaves were flavonol glycosides, accounting for 58.5–67.9% of total phenolics, and their content was the highest at the end of berry ripening.

In the context of Azerbaijan’s evolving winemaking landscape, this study investigates the sustainability of viticulture with a particular focus on grape seeds, which are crucial for grapevine propagation, oil extraction, and overall vineyard health. The research aimed to examine the morphological, technological, and biochemical characteristics of grape seeds to optimise grape production methods and promote sustainable viticultural practices. To achieve this, seed samples from twelve grape varieties, both local and introduced, were carefully collected and analysed under varying irrigation conditions, including both irrigated and rainfed settings, to allow for a comprehensive assessment. The investigation revealed significant effects of irrigation on seed properties. Specifically, seeds from irrigated grapes were found to be larger, heavier, and richer in oil content compared to those from rainfed grapes. Detailed analyses showed that the nitrogen content of the seeds ranged from 0.96% to 1.46%, cellulose content varied from 18.8% to 25.3%, ash content ranged from 1.9% to 3.1%, nitrogenous compounds fluctuated between 5.5% and 7.2%, and non-nitrogen extractive substances registered between 16.6% and 22.0%. Notably, correlations between seed properties and the efficiency of cold press oil extraction were identified, providing valuable insights. In order to investigate the suitable tea types of wolfberry, this study prepared 4 kinds of wolfberry tea made from two kinds of wolfberry plant respectively with green tea or white tea processing technology. Headspace solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-TOF-MS), biochemical compositional analysis and sensory evaluation combined with principal component analysis (PCA), aroma activity value (OAV) and multivariate statistical analysis were used to analyze the flavor characteristics of the four types of wolfberry tea processed from bud and leaf. The results showed that green tea processed by M plant had the highest sensory quality score, followed by white tea processed by M and A plant respectively, and green tea processed by A plant had the lowest score. The highest flavonoid contents were found in green tea processed by M, meanwhile, the highest water extracts were found in green tea processed by A. A total of 58 volatiles were detected in the four teas, among which geranylacetone, n-hexanol, dihydrokiwi lactone, phenylethanol, benzyl alcohol, naphthalene, and α-pinitol were the characteristic aroma components of AB and MB presenting sweet floral and light aroma. 1-octen-3-ol was the characteristic aroma component of AL presenting fruity aroma, and 2,5-dimethylpyrazine, 3,5-octadien-2-one, β-cyclic citral, benzaldehyde, foliate acetate and hexyl acetate were the characteristic aroma components of ML presenting floral, fruity and light aroma. It could be seen that M plant was suitable for green tea and white tea, A plant was suitable for white tea, A and M processed white tea were floral, light flavor characteristics, A plant processed green tea was fruity flavor characteristics, M plant processed green tea was floral, fruity, light flavor characteristics. This study clarified the suitable tea types of wolfberry A and M plant and the flavor characteristics of wolfberry buds and leaves tea, and provided reference for the excavation and utilization of wolfberry buds and leaves tea.

The work analyzes the biochemical composition and the influence of some abiotic factors on cells of Nitzschia sp. strains at different stages of the life cycle. The results of the experiment showed the ability of cells to grow in the salinity range of 10–60‰ at the pre-reproductive stage and in the range of 4–60‰ at the reproductive stage which indicates a relatively wide salinity tolerance of the studied species. The optimal salinity (25‰) and illumination (2.95 klx) for a 12-h photoperiod were found to be the same for both parent and daughter cells. The light saturation coefficient for them was 1.4 klx, indicating high energy efficiency of photosynthesis. Analysis of the biochemical composition of two Nitzschia sp. strains in the reproductive and pre-reproductive stages of the life cycle was carried out. During the accumulative cultivation a high content of monoenoic and polyenoic acids was observed. In general, the amount of saturated fatty acids (UFAs) was higher in parental cells, and the amount of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) was higher in post-initial cells. The quantity of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) was almost the same in both cultures. The ω-6/ω-3 ratio showed a predominance of ω-3 fatty acids in both parental and daughter strains. Nitzschia sp. represents an interest for biotechnology given its biochemical composition and fairly high energy efficiency when grown in culture. Since 2012 the Moroccan Atlantic coast has witnessed the introduction of the brown alien seaweed Sargassum muticum with a high invasive potential presenting environmental and economic risks. This study evaluates the effect of seasons and location on the biochemical composition of S. muticum. Proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, pigments, minerals, and heavy metals were studied during four seasons from spring 2019 to autumn 2020 at four sites along the Moroccan Atlantic coast: El Jadida, Saada (SA), Sidi Bouzid (SB), Moulay Abdallah (MA) and Jorf Lasfar (JL). MA presents the highest protein content (12.5% dw) during spring and the highest level of lipid and carbohydrate content during summer (1.8% dw and 41.5% dw respectively). The highest chlorophyll a content was found in JL and MA sites with (21.6 and 21.45 mg mL-1, respectively) during winter. Maximum chlorophyll c and carotenoids were found at SA with (2.27 and 9.71 mg mL-1, respectively) during winter. In all locations and during all seasons, the mineral profile was rich in essential minerals such as magnesium, manganese, zinc, iron, selenium, and lithium. Levels of toxic metals Al and Pb were lower than in previous studies whereas Cd and As were slightly higher than the legislation limits for dry seaweeds. Therefore, in this context, some strategies of S. muticum valorisation should be favoured such as bioenergy, bioplastic or biostimulant over others such as human food and animal feed. Fish by-products can be converted into high-value-added products like fish protein hydrolysates (FPHs), which have high nutritional value and are rich in bioactive peptides with health benefits. This study aims to characterise FPHs derived from salmon heads (HPSs) and Cape hake trimmings (HPHs) using Alcalase for enzymatic hydrolysis and Subcritical Water Hydrolysis (SWH) as an alternative method. All hydrolysates demonstrated high protein content (70.4–88.7%), with the degree of hydrolysis (DH) ranging from 10.7 to 36.4%. The peptide profile of FPHs indicated the breakdown of proteins into small peptides. HPSs showed higher levels of glycine and proline, while HPHs had higher concentrations of glutamic acid, leucine, threonine, and phenylalanine. Similar elemental profiles were observed in both HPHs and HPSs, and the levels of Cd, Pb, and Hg were well below the legislated limits. Hydrolysates do not have a negative effect on cell metabolism and contribute to cell growth. HPSs and HPHs exhibited high 2,2′–azino-bis(3 ethylbenzthiazoline-6)-sulfonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging activity, Cu2+ and Fe2+ chelating activities, and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity, with HPHs generally displaying higher activities. The α-amylase inhibition of both FPHs was relatively low. These results indicate that HPHs are a promising natural source of nutritional compounds and bioactive peptides, making them potential candidates for use as an ingredient in new food products or nutraceuticals. Nitrogen is one of the most important nutrient sources for the growth of microalgae. We studied the effects of nitrogen starvation on the growth responses, biochemical composition, and fatty acid profile of Dunaliella tertiolecta, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, and Nannochloropsis oculata. The lack of nitrogen caused changes in carbohydrate, protein, lipid, and fatty acid composition in all examined microalgae. The carbohydrate content increased 59% in D. tertiolecta, while the lipid level increased 139% in P. tricornutum under nitrogen stress conditions compared to the control groups. Nitrogen starvation increased the oligosaccharide and polysaccharide contents of D. tertiolecta 4.1-fold and 3.6-fold, respectively. Furthermore, triacylglycerol (TAG) levels in N. oculata and P. tricornutum increased 2.3-fold and 7.4-fold, respectively. The dramatic increase in the amount of TAG is important for the use of these microalgae as raw materials in biodiesel. Nitrogen starvation increased the amounts of oligosaccharides and polysaccharides of D. tertiolecta, while increased eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) in N. oculata and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) content in P. tricornutum. The amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), EPA, DHA, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides in microalgal species can be increased without using the too costly nitrogen source in the culture conditions, which can reduce the most costly of living feeding. The year 2021 marked a decade of holopelagic sargassum (morphotypes Sargassum natans I and VIII, and Sargassum fluitans III) stranding on the Caribbean and West African coasts. Beaching of millions of tons of sargassum negatively impacts coastal ecosystems, economies, and human health. Additionally, the La Soufrière volcano erupted in St. Vincent in April 2021, at the start of the sargassum season. We investigated potential monthly variations in morphotype abundance and biomass composition of sargassum harvested in Jamaica and assessed the influence of processing methods (shade-drying vs. frozen samples) and of volcanic ash exposure on biochemical and elemental components. S. fluitans III was the most abundant morphotype across the year. Limited monthly variations were observed for key brown algal components (phlorotannins, fucoxanthin, and alginate). Shade-drying did not significantly alter the contents of proteins but affected levels of phlorotannins, fucoxanthin, mannitol, and alginate. Simulation of sargassum and volcanic ash drift combined with age statistics suggested that sargassum potentially shared the surface layer with ash for ~50 d, approximately 100 d before stranding in Jamaica. Integrated elemental analysis of volcanic ash, ambient seawater, and sargassum biomass showed that algae harvested from August had accumulated P, Al, Fe, Mn, Zn, and Ni, probably from the ash, and contained less As. This ash fingerprint confirmed the geographical origin and drift timescale of sargassum. Since environmental conditions and processing methods influence biomass composition, efforts should continue to improve understanding, forecasting, monitoring, and valorizing sargassum, particularly as strandings of sargassum show no sign of abating. Phytochemicals are plant-based bioactive compounds produced by plants for their protection. In Allium species, the principal bioactive phytochemicals include organosulfur compounds, polyphenols, and saponins. Most of them have also displayed antioxidant activities aside from other biological properties. Selection for productivity, disease resistance, and long shelf life has brought the biologically active substances out of control of selection. Green algae Cladophora spp. inhabit waters with wide ranges of salinity and temperature, and their productivity is much higher than terrestrial plants. In natural waters, including hypersaline, they occupy large areas producing large biomass. Summing up and analyzing data from about 273 published articles, the review demonstrates the high production potential of Cladophora spp. and the diverse rich biochemical content of their biomass giving the prosperous possibility of their wide applications in agri–/aquaculture. As a fertilizer, they can be utilized by different methods (biochar, dry algae powder, etc.). Their extracts are effective growth stimulants for different cultivated plant species. Biomass is a promising fount of carbohydrates, vitamins, polyunsaturated fatty acids, proteins, essential microelements, and other biologically active compounds for the nutrition of animals and humans. Now their biomass is used in the feeding of livestock and chickens. It is also a valuable feed supplement for a variety of fish species, which may substitute up to 28% artificial feed in fish/shrimp cultivation. Cladophora co–farming with fish/shrimp reduces the use of artificial feed increasing commercial profitability. A wide use of Cladophora in agri–/aquaculture is economical and also mitigates environmental problems by reducing needs in agrarian land, and freshwater use, and likewise diminishing the emission of greenhouse gas methane by livestock. This study investigated the effects of incorporating grape pomace (GP) into fish diets on the growth performance, physiological parameters, and biochemical composition of carp (Cyprinus carpio L.). A total of 180 carp, with an average initial weight of 65 g, were reared in a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS). They were divided into a control group (C), fed with a diet containing 0% GP, and two experimental groups (V1 and V2), fed with diets containing 5% and 10% GP, respectively. The experiment lasted for eight weeks. Results revealed that most growth parameters were not significantly affected by GP inclusion, except for a notable difference in the hepatosomatic index (HSI), indicating an impact on liver size relative to body weight. The biochemical analysis of carp meat showed significant differences in moisture, protein, fat, collagen, and salt content between the control and experimental groups. Furthermore, the oxidative status assessment indicated that GP supplementation modulates oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation pathways in carp, enhancing their antioxidant defenses and overall health. Microbiological examination of the carp intestinal content showed that GP inclusion in fish diets influenced microbial parameters, particularly affecting the abundance of aerobic germs and Enterobacteriaceae. Recently, there has been increasing evidence that many infections are associated with the formation of multispecies biofilms, in which there is a change in the sensitivity of bacteria to antibiotics and a change in the permeability of the extracellular matrix compared to monocultures. In this work, we show that the addition of cell-free culture liquid (CFCL) of Staphylococcus aureus to Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms increases the content of α-, and β-polysaccharides in the matrix up to 2 times, which likely affects the structure of the biofilm. The increase in the polysaccharide component is also confirmed by a significant rise in the expression level of the K. pneumoniaepgaA and P. aeruginosapelA, pslA genes in the presence of S. aureus culture liquid. The aim of this work was to measure the growth rate, biomass production, proximate composition, and fatty acid content of eleven microalgae strains to evaluate their potential for biofuel production. The growth rate (p < 0.05), total dry weight (p < 0.05), organic dry weight (p < 0.05), ash content (p < 0.05), and biomass productivity (p < 0.05) differed among eleven microalgae strains. The proximate composition differed (p < 0.05) among the eleven microalgae strains. The lipid contents were higher in Cymbella sp. (strain 2) (42.46 ± 1.06%) (p < 0.05). The carbohydrate content was higher (p < 0.05) in Aphanocapsa marina (42.40 ± 1.18 %). The protein content was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in Chlamydomonas mexicana (52.83 ± 0.60%). The contents of saturated (SFAs) (p < 0.05), monounsaturated (MUFAs), and polyunsaturated (PUFAs) (p < 0.05) fatty acids among the eleven microalgae strains were different. The most important indicators of biodiesel properties are the cetane number (CN), iodine value (IV), and saponification value (SV). It was concluded that Chlorella vulgaris was an adequate strain to be used in the production of biodiesel due to their high amount of palmitic acid, oleic acid, and alpha-linolenic acid, by high values of IV (147.27 g I2/100 g), SV (210.96 mg KOH/g), and CN (48.88). The diatom Cymbella sp. is a promising strain for biodiesel production due to its high values of lipid content (42.46%), lipid productivity (1.24 g/L/day), growth rate (0.67 divisions/day), and IV (197.93 g I2/100 g), and by the lowest values of generation time (35.60 h) and SV (208.85 mg KOH/g). Another promising strain for biodiesel production is Porphyridium cruentum due to its high values of biomass productivity (0.038 g/L/day), lipid productivity (0.80 g/L/day), CN (45.60), and IV (220.15 g I2/100 g), and by the low generation time and SV (199.25 mg KOH/g). In this study, we investigated the physiological and biochemical responses of Ulva species to variation in nutrient availability. Sampling was conducted at two sites on Jeju Island, Korea, namely, Handong, which is close to seven intensive land-based fish farms, and Hado, which has no apparent nearby nutrient sources. We examined the water column nutrient concentrations, nitrate reductase (NR) activity, nitrate uptake efficiency, tissue C, N, and P content, and stable isotope ratios of Ulva species. Water column NH4+, NO3− + NO2−, and PO43− concentrations were significantly higher at Handong than at Hado. NR activity and tissue N content of Ulva species were significantly higher at Handong than at Hado. Notably, nitrate uptake efficiency was inversely proportional to NR activity and tissue N content. The physiological and biochemical responses of Ulva species were closely related to dissolved inorganic nitrogen, which stimulates Ulva species to regulate growth. Additionally, the δ15N values of Ulva tissues at both sites were within the previously reported range for fresh groundwater. Therefore, the main nitrogen source for Ulva growth may be submerged groundwater with high nutrient concentrations. This study investigated how farmed blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) can optimize human nutrient intake. A particular focus was on assessing nutrient preservation during steaming and freeze-drying, processes that could deplete nutrients. The study compared the content of essential amino acids and fatty acids in steamed and freeze-dried blue mussels to the nutritional needs of humans and farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Additionally, it assessed the ethyl acetate method versus the traditional, more toxic Folch method for lipid extraction from blue mussels. Both steaming and freeze-drying effectively preserved essential amino acids and fatty acids in blue mussels. A 100 g serving of steamed blue mussels contributes from 26.8 ± 0.78% (Phe) to 54.9 ± 1.66% (Thr) of the daily recommended intake of essential amino acids (EAA). For steamed freeze-dried blue mussels, over 100% of the recommended intake is met for all EAA and as much as 243% for threonine. The 100 g serving will also provide 271 mg eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 20:5n-3) and 220 mg docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6n-3), thus covering the required intake of n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids for adults as well as the recommended intake for pregnant and lactating women. Mussels are non-fed filter feeders that generally provide these nutrients with significantly lower environmental footprints, measured as global warming, eutrophication, and acidification, compared to farmed Atlantic salmon. Blue mussels can also be a valuable feed ingredient for farmed Atlantic salmon. Finally, it was demonstrated that the ethyl acetate method is not suited for lipid extraction from blue mussels, as the lipid yield was only half compared to the lipid yield using the Folch method.

Tea foam properties, crucial indicators of tea quality, have gained renewed interest due to their potential applications in innovative beverages and foods. This study investigated the foaming properties and chemical foundations of six major tea categories through morphological observations and biochemical analyses. White tea exhibited the highest foaming ability at 56.28%, while black tea showed the best foam stability at 84.01%. Conversely, green tea had the lowest foaming ability (10.83%) and foam stability (54.24%). These superior foaming characteristics are attributed to the relatively low lipid content and acidic pH values. Surprisingly, no significant correlation was found between tea saponin content and foaming properties. Instead, specific amino acids (including Tyr, Gaba, Phe, Ile, and Leu) and catechins (GA and CG) were identified as potential contributors. These results deepen our understanding of tea foam formation and offer insights into utilizing tea-derived plant-based foams in food products.

The diversity of the plant biomass available on earth makes plants an exceptional resource for replacing fossil resources in green chemistry, bioenergy and biobased materials. For numerous applications, and especially the high-tech ones (building block molecules, high-power bioenergy, additive manufacturing of biobased materials), the macrostructure assemblies of the plant biomass often need to be first broken down into a fine powder. This can be achieved by dry fractionation process combining comminution and sorting steps. The chemical and physical properties of the ground plant powder results both from the process conditions, the histological structure and chemical composition of the raw plant materials. In a forward engineering approach, the quality of the final products can be highly improved by the selection of the right powder (raw materials and production process) for the right application.This article provides production routes together with physical and chemical characterization of 10 biomass powders from 6 different biomass feedstocks (SP - spirulina, HI - hibiscus, PB - pine bark, HC - hemp Core, RH - rice husk and RHA - rice husk ash). These feedstocks represent a broad range of raw materials properties. For pine bark, hemp core, rice husk and rice husk ash, two grades of powders related to two different particle sizes were produced by two different routes to highlight the impact of the comminution process on the powder properties. The devices used and the process parameters are described. The morphological properties of the powder were quantified using laser diffraction (particle size) and image analysis (shape factor) and qualitatively analyzed with SEM. The specific surface area was determined using gas sorption with BET theory, and the hygroscopic properties were measured using direct vapor sorption. The chemical characterizations were determined with a set of biochemical assays and, complementary, FTIR and fluorescence spectra were recorded to provide fingerprints of samples. The dataset includes tables that summarize the main characteristic descriptors of each analysis as well as the raw data.The data are registered in the French Research Data Gouv public repository and also stored in the PO2 BaGaTel database using the PO2/TransformON ontology [1]. Relevance. In connection with the development of industrial hydroponics in the country, the need arose to create targeted varieties and hybrids of F1 small radish for salad lines, which have special requirements. They should be productive, early ripening and shade-tolerant, with a rounded root shape and a small compact rosette of leaves, resistant to premature stem formation (stem formation). Root vegetables should be juicy, dense, without voids and bitterness, as well as with a high content of ascorbic acid and other biologically active substances and low accumulation of pollutants.Methodology. The material for the study was selection samples of small radishes created in the laboratory of selection and seed production of table root crops of the Federal State Budgetary Institution " Federal Scientific Vegetable Center". The assessment of promising breeding material was carried out in the seedling department of the Richel greenhouse and in the production conditions of Moskovsky LLC according to the methods adopted by the Federal Scientific Center.Results. Based on the assessment results, promising leveled material was identified, adapted to the conditions of salad lines, both in terms of a set of characteristics and in individual areas of selection: No. 81 with high yield and marketability, having large red root crops of a round-oval shape and a small leaf rosette, No. 83 – with large roots, small leaf rosette and resistance to flowering, No. 80 is a genetic source of high resistance to flowering (3.6%) combined with marketability and a small leaf rosette. Genetic sources of high dry matter content were identified – the Dutch hybrid F1 Gloritet, monosaccharides – sample No. 83, ascorbic acid – No. 76, 81, 82, 84, high content of vitamin "C" and monosaccharides in root vegetables – No. 76. In the production conditions of Moskovsky LLC, three promising samples small radishes stood out with a yield of more than 2200 g per 1 m2 and a marketability of 93.9-96.8%, distinguished by large rounded red root crops, a small rosette of leaves and a thin axial root.

Production of freeze-dried juice semi-finished products is a promising direction in the technology of processing blueberries. This direction allows complex problem solving regarding seasonality of berry processing with optimization of logistics costs, extension of the geography of sources of raw material supply while preserving high sensory properties of a freeze-dried product. The main advantages of such a product are characteristics determining properties of fresh berries, including taste, color, aroma, nutritional and biological value. The aim of the study was the development of technological solutions to produce freeze-dried blueberry juice from enzymatically processed blueberry pulp, as well as determination of its biochemical characteristics. Chemical (titrimetric and gravimetric) methods and modern physico-chemical methods (HPLC, atomic absorption spectrometry, potentiometric and spectrophotometric methods) were used in the work. As a result of the performed investigations, parameters have been determined for the process of freeze-drying of native blueberry juice: freeze-drying temperature of –23 ±2 °С and pressure of 70–80 Pa, secondary drying at a temperature of 38–40 °С. Duration of the freeze-drying process was 16 hours until reaching the final moisture of 4%. It is shown that freeze-dried juice preserves all quality attributes of the native juice: taste, color and aroma. The native and freeze-dried blueberry juice was characterized by the chemical composition. The profile of flavonoids, anthocyans, phenolic and organic acids, composition of sugars, vitamins and minerals were studied. It has been established that the chosen parameters of freeze-drying ensure preservation of biologically active and minor substances at a level of no less than 77% of the initial content in the native juice. High preservation was demonstrated for quercetin and resveratrol. Losses were 9.6% for epicatechin, 13.7–23.0% for phenolic acids, and 14–22% for vitamins. As a result of juice processing by freeze-drying, an increase was noticed for the content of delphinidin-3-glucoside, cyanidin-3-arabinoside, cyanidin-3-glucoside by 20–35%. The proportion of cyanidin-3-galactoside + delphinidin-3-arabinoside decreased by 65% and that of delphinidin-3-galactoside by 2.85 times. A decrease in the content of macro-elements (up to 6.0%) was established in the freeze-dried juice; more noticeable losses were recorded for micro-elements (up to 14.8%). The results obtained show prospects of using the technology and chosen regimes of freeze-drying in production of freezedried blueberry juice. This technology combines a possibility of producing a manufacturable berry ingredient with maximum preservation of natural biologically active and minor components of berries for using in products of healthy nutrition.

The purpose of the research was the assessment of feed productivity and nutritional value of 13 new varieties of meadow timothy, meadow fescue and awnless brome when cultivated for green mass in the Middle Cis-Urals. The research was carried out in 2018–2022 on sod-podzolic medium loamy soil of the Udmurt Republic. Meteorological conditions of the growing seasons during the years of the research were different: 2018, 2021 and 2022 were arid (hydrothermal coefficient – 0.89, 0.78 and 0.91, respectively), 2020 – slightly arid (HTC – 1.04), 2019 – waterlogged (HTC – 1.73). The beginning of regrowth of the studied varieties of perennial cereal grasses was noted in the third ten days of April; the grass reached mowing ripeness in 44–60 days. The yield of meadow timothy varieties on average for three years of using the grass stand was at the level of 3.5–3.9 t/ha of dry weight, meadow fescue – 2.3–2.4 t/ha, awnless brome – 4.5–4.7 t/ha. The “year conditions” factor had a primary influence on the variation in yield, density and height of the grass stand – 92.4…97.4 %, 62.9…79.2, 80.3…82.6 %, respectively. The “genotype x year” factor also influenced the number of shoots and their height. Fescue varieties were distinguished by a relatively high content of crude fat (2.5–3.1 %), sugars (15.6–17.7 %), and calcium (0.31–0.36 %). High content of crude fat (2.3–2.6 %), phosphorus (0.68–0.71 %), potassium (2.45–2.52 %), calcium (0.31–0.39 %) noted in plant samples of awnless brome varieties. A positive strong correlation between the yield of dry mass of cereal grasses and the content of phosphorus (r = 0.87…0.96) and potassium (r = 0.69…0.85) in it was revealed. Some varieties of perennial cereal grasses were distinguished by their nutritional value: meadow timothy varieties Sleipnir (Finland), Aturo (Germany) and Tamiza (Germany) with a yield per 1 hectare of metabolic energy of 32.3–34.4 GJ, digestible protein – 0.14–0.16 tons, feed units – 2.41–2.60 thousand; meadow fescue variety Karpatchi (Netherlands) – 21.2 GJ, 0.09 tons, 1.57 thousand; awnless brome variety Gvardeets (Russia) – 35.7 GJ, 0.25 tons and 2.58 thousand, respectively. Cultivation of Karpatchi fescue, Sleipnir timothy and Gvardeets brome is energetically and economically profitable: energy efficiency coefficient – 1.9; 3.0 and 3.6, profitability level – 65; 101 and 161 %, respectively.

Cherries (Prunus avium L.) are valued for their taste and nutritional properties. However, they are highly perishable. A low-temperature preservation technology can preserve cherries without spoiling their beneficial properties. This research experimentally substantiated the optimal methods and modes of freezing cherries, defined their refrigerated shelf-life, and identified varieties for low-temperature preservation. The study featured cherries of eight varieties grown in the northern foothills of Dagestan. Fresh cherries served as control. Some cherries were frozen by immersion in a liquid solution of water, alcohol, and sugar (65:20:15) at –24°C. Others were frozen in bulk in air at –30, –33, and –35°C to be stored at –22°C for 3, 9, and 12 months. The nutritional profile was determined by standard methods of chemical analysis. The amount of juice lost during defrosting was assessed by the difference in weight before and after defrosting. The sensory evaluation involved a five-point scale. The best nutritional profile belonged to the sample frozen in air at –35°C while the worst result was observed in the cherries frozen at –30°C. The cherries frozen in bulk in air at –33°C and those immersed in liquid coolant at –24°C demonstrated a poorer nutritional content (by 4.2–5.4%) than the sample frozen in air at –35°C. The sample frozen in air preserved 77.5–81.6% vitamin C, 83.7–89.0% pectin substances, 85.1–88.5% anthocyanins, and 81.4–86.4% sugar after 12 months of storage at –22°C. The sample frozen in liquid coolant retained 75.9–79.0% vitamin C, 84.4–88.2% pectin substances, 83.8–87.5% anthocyanins, and 80.3–84.7% sugar after 12 months of storage. The cherries of the Lezginka, Dagestanka, and Valery Chkalov varieties showed minimal changes after 12 months. The varieties of Buynakskaya, Krupnoplodnaya, and Polyanka could be recommended for nine-month storage. The varieties of Zhemchuzhnaya and Gudzon lost consumer attractiveness as early as after 3 months. When frozen in bulk in air at –33°C and immersed in liquid coolant at –24°C, the cherries preserved their physicochemical properties after 3, 9, and 12 months of storage at –22°C. The study expanded the existing data about low-temperature preservation of cherries and their health benefits.

Cloudberry (Rubus chamaemorus L.) and arctic raspberry (Rubus arcticus L.) are highly nutritional and medicinal but lowyield berries, with some populations being on the verge of extinction. Micropropagation biotechnologies are cost-effective and may provide healthy and plentiful planting material for these valuable berries. Clonal micropropagation of cloudberry and arctic raspberry requires new methods adapted for Russian varieties. This research featured the effect of sterilizing agents on the survival rate of explants of R. chamaemorus and R. arcticus, as well as the effect of growth regulators in the nutrient medium on their organogenesis in vitro. Berries obtained from regenerant plants of R. chamaemorus (Arkhangelsk and Vologda varieties) and R. arcticus (Sofia and Galina varieties) underwent a biochemical analysis. Further research involved the effect of sterilizing agents and exposure time on the viability of explants, as well as the effect of the nutrient medium composition and the concentration of growth regulators on the development of microshoots and roots in vitro. In case of lateral buds, the highest survival rate of both types of explants (80–96%) belonged to the samples sterilized with 0.2% silver nitrate and 5% Lysoformin 3000 for 15 min. In case of etiolated shoots (79–100%), it was the samples treated with 0.2% silver nitrate, 0.01% Nika 2, and 5% Lysoformin 3000 for 10 min. The maximal total length of microshoots in R. chamaemorus (19.4–22.7 cm) was registered at 0.1 mg/L Cytodef in the Murashige and Skoog medium. The maximal total length of roots (46.0–56.6 cm) was obtained when the medium contained 0.5 mL/L indolylacetic acid. As for R. arcticus, the maximal total lengths of microshoots (22.4–22.8 cm) and roots (86.6–89.3 cm) occurred at the same concentrations of growth regulators on 1/2 Murashige and Skoog medium. In this research, Cytodef and indolylacetic acid applied in the process of clonal micropropagation of R. chamaemorus and R. arcticus made it possible to increase the yield of high-quality planting material for commercial plantations.

This study was done in order to investigate the changes of the major biochemical components and in vitro antioxidant activity of the water extracts from different kinds of tea during the process of their multistage membrane separation, ultrafiltration membranes with molecular masses cut-off (MMCO) of 20, 10, and 3.5 kDa, respectively were successively used to separate the water extracts from the major kinds of tea in Fujian including green tea, white tea, oolong tea from south Fujian, oolong tea from north Fujian, and black tea into fractions with different molecular masses. The fractions were spray dried and investigated for their ultraviolet (UV) spectra, biochemical compositions and in vitro antioxidant activity. The results showed that the UV absorption spectra of all samples were similar, exhibiting two obvious peaks at 210 and 274 nm. Absorbance at 274 nm exhibited a significant positive correlation with the contents of free amino acids (FAAs), caffeine (CAF), gallic acid (GA) and epicatechin gallate (ECG), and a significantly negative correlation with the contents of epigallocatechin (EGC) and epicatechin (EC). The distribution of biochemical components and the changes in antioxidant activity in vitro were affected by membrane separation, among which, the 20 kDa MMCO membrane had the most pronounced impact. The retentate from black tea after 20 kDa MMCO membrane ultrafiltration had the highest antioxidant activity in vitro, while the antioxidant activity of the permeate was lower than that of the permeate from the other kinds of tea. The biochemical components and antioxidant activity in vitro varied significantly among different types of tea samples, and the changes in biochemical components and antioxidant activity during the membrane separation process were not completely consistent. The water extract from black tea showed the greatest changes after 20 kDa MMCO membrane ultrafiltration. These results could provide a scientific basis for the membrane separation of aqueous extracts from different types of tea.

Relevance. In order to expand the range of food products for the crews of the International Space Station (ISS), studies have been conducted on the specifics of developing natural flavoring vegetable additives in the form of powder for freeze-dried dishes. The aim is to evaluate new broccoli hybrids as raw materials for the production of natural flavoring vegetable additives in the form of powder for freeze-dried dishes of increased nutritional value and high degree of readiness for consumption, including components of children's, dietary and cosmonaut nutrition. Methods. The objects of the study were 6 new broccoli hybrids (2 hybrids of domestic and 4 of foreign breeding). Results. In domestic hybrids F1 (Detskiy delikates, Macho), the average vitamin C content in natural flavoring vegetable additives in the form of freeze-dried powder of a high degree of readiness for consumption was 1.66 times higher than in foreign hybrids. The highest vitamin C content was noted in the domestic hybrid children's delicacy 419.4 mg %. β-carotene was best preserved in the hybrids F1 Detskiy delikates (2.58 mg %), F1 Macho (2.56 mg %), as well as in the hybrid F1 Batavia (2.52 mg %). The amount of sugars in natural flavoring vegetable additives in the form of freeze-dried powder was on average 1.17 times higher in domestic hybrids than in foreign ones. At the same time, some foreign hybrids showed a high level of accumulation. So the largest accumulation of the sum of sugars was in the F1 Lord (12.85 %). A high level of sugar content was also observed in F1 Macho (12.84 %) and F1 Detskiy delikates (11.63 %). The F1 Fiesta accumulated the least nitrates (77.1 mg/kg). According to organoleptic indicators, the F1 Detskiy delikates has been identified. High organoleptic indices were also noted in the F1 Macho and the F1 Batavia.

Introduction. The relevance of the work is due to the need to find ways to preserve the nutrient composition of vitamins and other necessary raw materials to create finished food products that can diversify the diet of astronauts, taking into account their habitat. Goal – Comparison of methods for dehydrating plant materials and creating finished food products with a certain degree of dehydration, recommended for feeding astronauts. These methods were used to produce so-called “frips” from fresh fruits and berries; this is a type of snack that is also widely used and developed in modern industry. Objects and methods of research. The objects of the study were several types of fruits and berries of various varieties (minimum 2) during dehydration by several types of drying. Results. Dehydration using the LTVD (low temperature vacuum drying) method makes it possible to obtain finished products with a given final moisture content, and the product can be made from multi-component raw materials. The duration of the dehydration process using the LTVD method compared to the VFD (vacuum freeze drying) method is reduced by approximately 10-20 % depending on the product, while due to the absence of preliminary freezing, the specific energy costs for drying a food object can presumably be reduced by 15-25 %. Quality indicators of the finished dry product The product dried using the presented methods is comparable, the content of vitamins and microelements is at almost the same level, therefore, when choosing the type of drying, we can recommend the LTVD method as less energy-consuming. The yield of marketable products in the production of frips ranges from 15.0 to 19.5 % by weight of the initial raw materials, which meets the requirements for economic efficiency of production.

Euchlorocystis marina, a new marine species of the genus Euchlorocystis discovered in 2022, has the potential to improve the water quality in mariculture ponds. However, the effects of salinity on the growth, physiology, and biochemical composition of these algae are not well understood. In this study, changes in physiological and biochemical indices such as cell density, photosynthetic pigment, polysaccharide, and lipid content of E. marina under different salinity treatments were analyzed. The results showed that the highest cell density was observed at a salinity of 15°C. The lowest photosynthetic pigment content was observed at a salinity of 60°C, and the highest polysaccharide and lipid content was observed at a salinity of 60°C. These results indicated that lower salinity was more conducive to E. marina reproduction and growth. E. marina can accumulate polysaccharides and lipids in high salinity environments. This study provides new information for understanding the salinity adaptation strategies of E. marina and has practical significance for its development and utilization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Oolong tea, celebrated for its significance in Chinese tea culture, was the subject of investigation in this study. Methods: Five varieties of Minnan oolong tea were sampled, each cultivated under two distinct management approaches: conventional management and natural growth methods. The study aimed to discern variations in sensory attributes, encompassing appearance and liquor color, alongside the analysis of chemical composition. Results and discussion: The results indicated that oolong tea cultivated through conventional manual management generally exhibited qualities in terms of shape and foliage appearance, in contrast to those grown naturally. However, naturally grown oolong tea tended to exhibit more favorable aroma and taste profiles compared to conventionally managed counterparts. Furthermore, the content of water extract, amino acids, polyphenols, caffeine, and other pivotal chemical constituents were typically higher in naturally grown tea varieties compared to conventionally managed ones. Conversely, catechin content was found to be more abundant in traditionally managed bushes than in those grown naturally. These findings emphasize the significance of implementing appropriate natural growth management practices to enhance the quality of Minnan oolong tea and maintain ecological sustainability. Thirty-six microalgae belonging to five taxonomic groups (Cyanobacteria, Chlorophyceae, Diatomophyceae, Euglenophyceae, and Eustigmatophyceae) were identified from six freshwater ecosystems in Morocco, two treatment stations in Etueffont landfill in France and three hot spring waters in Tunisia. Investigations on species growth kinetics and growth rates showed that the cyanobacterium Leptolyngbya gelatinosa exhibited both the highest biomass and growth rate with 4 g DW L−1 and 0.282 day−1, respectively. A significant protein production (more than 40% DW) was observed across the studied species. Cyanobacteria and chlorophytes stood out for their increased protein production with a maximum (66.63 ± 3.84% DW) attained by the cyanobacterium Leptolyngbya sp. Chlorophytes produced substantial amounts of carbohydrates (more than 20% DW). Euglenophytes including Phacus orbicularis and Euglena ehrenbergii along with the chlorophyte Graesiella sp. accumulated significant amounts of lipids (up to 31.12% DW). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, the qualitative changes in raw birch sap after freezing and thawing were determined. Ten-liter bottles and one-ton plastic containers with six replications were used for the freezing of birch sap and thawing of frozen sap. During and after the thawing, the physical and physical–chemical properties of the sap were measured. According to the results, as the ice melts, the concentration of acids and other soluble substances in the sap decreases, but changes in qualitative indicators indicate the beginning of fermentation processes through color changes and pH as the temperature of the melting sap becomes positive. As a result, to freeze raw sap in large-volume containers, it is necessary to develop fast thawing technology using auxiliary means—circulation, external energy sources, and mechanical ice crushing. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of 10 and 20 nm nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the growth and biochemical composition of microalga Porphyridium purpureum CNMN-AR-02 in two media which differ by the total amount of mineral salts (MM1 with 33.02 g/L and MM2 with 21.65 g/L). Spectrophotometric methods were used to estimate the amount of biomass and its biochemical composition. This study provides evidence of both stimulatory and inhibitory effects of AgNPs on different parameters depending on the concentration, size, and composition of the nutrient medium. In relation to the mineral medium, AgNPs exhibited various effects on the content of proteins (an increase up to 20.5% in MM2 and a decrease up to 36.8% in MM1), carbohydrates (a decrease up to 35.8% in MM1 and 39.6% in MM2), phycobiliproteins (an increase up to 15.7% in MM2 and 56.8% in MM1), lipids (an increase up to 197% in MM1 and no changes found in MM2), antioxidant activity (a decrease in both media). The work examines the features of light sources influence simulating solar illumination with different spectral composition with a ratio of blue : green : red ranges of 11 : 35 : 54% (AFI-3000), 19 : 38 : 43% (AFI-4000), and 25 : 38 : 37% (AFI-5000) on morphometric, biochemical, photosynthetic, and electrogenic parameters of small radish (Raphanus sativus L.) for photoculture of the 'Peterburgskiy fioletovyy'cultivar. The conducted studies revealed a significant increase in the yield of roots (3.45 kg/m2 for 28 days of growing season), dry matter content up to 8.9% and photosynthetic pigments, reduction in the amount of nitrates to 1206 mg/kg in radish plants illuminated with AFI-5000 spectrum lamps, close to solar radiation at noon. In this variant, an increase in the coefficients of the effective quantum photochemical yield of the PS II photosystem Y (II) = 0.206, photochemical qP = 0.304, and nonphotochemical qN = 0.415 of fluorescence quenching was observed as well as a high generation of potential difference up to 532 mV in the root environment compared to AFI-3000, simulating the light of the sun near the horizon, under which illumination a high proportion of light scattering by the leaf was observed (R800 = 1.716), and AFI-4000 with a spectrum close to morning light. The AFI-4000 option showed the worst result: increased unregulated excitation energy losses Y (NO) = 0.712 and light transmission by the leaf surface of 7.5%. The use of the AFI-5000 light source contributed to obtaining higher indicators characterizing both the yield of plant products and the activity of the photosynthetic apparatus and the intensity of electrogenic processes in the root environment, which makes it possible to recommend a lamp of this type for growing root crops under light culture conditions.
