Soil salinity is a major nutritional challenge with poor agriculture production characterized by high sodium (Na+) ions in the soil. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and biochar have received attention as a sustainable strategy to reduce biotic and abiotic stress. However, there is a lack of information regarding the incorporation of ZnO NPs with biochar to ameliorate the salinity stress (0, 50,100 mM). Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate the potentials of ZnO NPs application (priming and foliar) alone and with a combination of biochar on the growth and nutrient availability of spinach plants under salinity stress. Results demonstrated that salinity stress at a higher rate (100 mM) showed maximum growth retardation by inducing oxidative stress, resulted in reduced photosynthetic rate and nutrient availability. ZnO NPs (priming and foliar) alone enhanced growth, chlorophyll contents and gas exchange parameters by improving the antioxidant enzymes activity of spinach under salinity stress. While, a significant and more pronounced effect was observed at combined treatments of ZnO NPs with biochar amendment. More importantly, ZnO NPs foliar application with biochar significantly reduced the Na+ contents in root 57.69%, and leaves 61.27% of spinach as compared to the respective control. Furthermore, higher nutrient contents were also found at the combined treatment of ZnO NPs foliar application with biochar. Overall, ZnO NPs combined application with biochar proved to be an efficient and sustainable strategy to alleviate salinity stress and improve crop nutritional quality under salinity stress. We inferred that ZnO NPs foliar application with a combination of biochar is more effectual in improving crop nutritional status and salinity mitigation than priming treatments with a combination of biochar.

Safeguarding the agricultural environment from pollution is one of the most critical challenges facing the world in the context of climate change. The loss of nitrogen fertilizers through agricultural runoff or volatilization in the form of nitrate or ammonia emissions is a significant contributor to pollution. This loss also represents an economic waste that may lead to increased prices of agricultural products. Therefore, finding a solution to this problem has become imperative. An experiment was conducted on wheat plants using various rates of urea coated with slow-release materials. The study aimed to assess the impact of these fertilizers on wheat growth and yield, nutrient uptake, and nitrogen utilization efficiency (NUtE). Results demonstrated that urea fertilizers coated with slow-release materials outperformed conventional fertilizers in terms of wheat growth and yield, uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, as well as NUtE. The most favorable outcomes were achieved using urea-formaldehyde, urea-humic, and urea-biochar fertilizers at 100% of the recommended nitrogen application rate. This resulted in economically viable grain production with high fertilizer efficiency. Based on these findings, we recommend applying either urea-formaldehyde or urea-humic at a rate of 107 kg N ha−1 to produce wheat grain and straw with enhanced NUtE. Water remediation with biomass derivatives has attracted attention for its sustainable impact on the earth. Chemical procedures for new adsorbent and active biomaterials must be implemented to remove organic pollutants more efficiently. Herein, we obtained a sustainable, environmentally, and low‐cost biochar from bamboo Dendrocalamus giganteus (BBC, B400) by thermal treatment at 400 °C without physical and chemical pre‐ and post‐treatments. By electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), we determined the quantification and ageing of persistent free radicals (PFRs, 1016–1019 spins/g) present in BBC over time. We demonstrated the removal efficiency (R %) of B400 against methylene blue (MB) aqueous solutions without and with different concentrations of H2O2 using a novel B400‐packed column‐flow system. Results demonstrated that the MB removal efficiency via physical adsorption and chemical degradation strongly depended on the concentration of carbon‐centred PFRs and their stability over time. Collectively, a reduced concentration of PFRs and their full passivation by proper treatments led to a remarkable loss of MB removal efficiency, thus evidencing that a PFR‐mediated radical degradation mechanism was predominant in the MB removal process. Experiments with t‐butanol alcohol (TBA) on aged B400 as a radical scavenger of the hydroxyl radical (⋅OH) have evidenced the critical role of PFRs in generating reactive oxygens species (ROSs) in solution, which catalysed the oxidative degradation of MB. Kinetics studies carried out on removal efficiency data vs time by all experiments established that the MB removal profiles of fresh B400 were best described by a pseudo‐second order (PSO) kinetic model, thus suggesting that chemical mechanisms such as electron transfer reactions and PFRs‐mediated degradation were the main contributors to MB removal. On the contrary, MB removal profiles of aged B400 with reduced or insignificant content of PFRs best fitted kinetic models, which describe physical absorption and diffusional nor radical processes, which led to a lower removal efficiency. BACKGROUND RESULTS CONCLUSION Agronomic uses of biochar have been intensely explored in the last 15 years. Recently, a new generation of biochar‐based fertilizers has been developed. Raw biochar (BCH), nitrogen‐enriched biochar (N + BCH) or urea were added to a coir fiber‐based substrate for tomato cultivation, to assess seed germination, growth and fruiting of two cultivars (Cuarenteno and Moneymaker).BCH stimulated seed germination and early radicle growth, possibly because of the presence of karrikins detected in both BCH and N‐BCH (0.039 and 0.044 mg kg−1, respectively). However, BCH reduced growth in adult plants in both cultivars, probably because of ammonium retention, causing low‐N‐stress‐related symptoms such as accumulation of flavonoids in the leaf. Urea was toxic for seed germination because of the fast release of ammonium, but caused a positive effect on adult plant growth and yield, increasing chlorophyll in both cultivars, quantum yield and ascorbic acid in cv. Cuarenteno, and decreasing flavonoids and peroxide in leaves of both cultivars. Unlike urea, N + BCH showed a positive impact on plant growth and yield, but without releasing high amounts of ammonium or negatively affecting seed germination. Nitrogen‐rich amendments reduced phosphorus and increased iron leaf content in both cultivars.BCH can be effectively used as a growth medium constituent in nurseries for seedling production, whereas N + BCH offers a promising alternative to urea or other nitrogen mineral fertilizers for crop cultivation. © 2024 The Author(s). The global climate crisis, exacerbated by intensifying natural disasters such as floods, droughts, rising sea levels, and forest fires, is rapidly depleting our water resources. To mitigate this, sustainable management of arid regions is crucial, requiring the implementation of effective water storage techniques, enhancement of soil water resources, and optimization of water utilization. Drought stress poses a significant challenge to agriculture, but the colonization of plants by mycorrhizal fungi offers a promising solution, enhancing drought tolerance and potentially alleviating plant water stress. Complementing this, organic materials like biochar, renowned for their extensive surface area and soil-stabilizing properties, can significantly improve soil water retention capacity, providing a synergistic approach when combined with mycorrhizal fungi. Although mycorrhiza positively impacts plant resistance to water stress, the exact mechanisms by which it facilitates water uptake and transport to plant tissues are still under investigation. Additionally, the implementation of water-conserving irrigation methods, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions, can further enhance water efficiency. The use of cover crops in agricultural production also reduces water losses by maintaining soil surface coverage and enhancing carbon and water storage in the soil. Moreover, understanding the mechanisms underlying water retention in biochar-amended soils is a crucial area of ongoing research. Organic agricultural practices are increasingly recognized for promoting sustainable soil–plant-environment interactions. However, the specific impact of soil additives in organic systems on nutrient and microbial dynamics, and their subsequent effects on crop performance, are still relatively unexplored. This study sought to address this gap by investigating the screening of suitable rice-legume residue combinations for biochar (BC) production and assessing the effect of incorporating BC as a soil additive in organic soil nutrient management. A two-year field experiment was conducted with six organic soil treatments comprising farmyard manure (FYM) and vermicompost (VC) as organic nutrient sources (equivalent to 100 kg N ha−1), along with BC and Jeevamrit (J-Con) as soil additives, and a non-fertilized control to evaluate their impacts on nutrient cycling and crop performance. The rice-pigeon pea crop residue combination was found to be the most suitable for BC production (BC-RP), maintaining favorable nutritional quality and conversion efficiency. Among the soil treatments, T5 (50% FYM + 50% VC + BC) emerged as the most effective for enhancing soil pH, carbon content, and nutrient and microbial dynamics, followed by 50% FYM + 50% VC + J-Con (T6). This treatment also notably improved crop (onion) parameters, including growth, yield, quality, and production economics. The incorporation of BC as soil additive in 50% FYM + 50% VC significantly enhanced nutrient and microbial transformations in the soil, resulting in improvements of 7–25% in crop parameters. Due to the pathogen's ability to survive in the soil for longer durations, soil-borne diseases are often difficult to control. This study investigates the multifaceted impacts of biochar on the management of stem rot disease in groundnut and its influence on soil properties and microbial communities. The effects of biochar at different concentrations, such as 0%, 1%, 3%, and 5% on groundnut stem rot disease incited by Sclerotium rolfsii were evaluated thoroughly. Under laboratory conditions, biochar exhibited no direct inhibitory effects on S. rolfsii at varying concentrations but revealed an indirect suppression of sclerotial body production, suggesting a concentration-dependent influence on pathogen resting structures. Further, it was observed that biochar treatments effectively delayed symptom onset and reduced disease progression in groundnut plants, with significant variation observed among genotypes and biochar concentrations. Notably, interactions involving genotypes ICGV 171002 and ICGV 181035 with BC2 + Sr (3% conc. of biochar + S. rolfsii) and BC3 + Sr (5% conc. of biochar + S. rolfsii) treatments showed superior efficacy in disease reduction under controlled conditions. Field evaluations confirmed these findings, highlighting genotype-specific responses to biochar treatments. However, no significant difference was observed between BC2 + Sr (3%) and BC3 + Sr (5%) treatments in managing stem rot disease compared to controls. Biochar application significantly increased soil nutrient levels, including nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, and increased soil organic matter content, EC, pH, emphasizing its potential to improve soil fertility. Overall, these findings highlight the potential benefits of biochar for sustainable agriculture through disease management, soil nutrient enrichment, and microbial modulation, warranting further investigation into optimal application strategies across different agricultural contexts. In this study, a new adsorbent, mulberry wood waste biochar modified with cinnamic acid (CA-MWB), is generated to capture the methylene blue dye (MB) from an aqueous solution. The synthesized material was characterized using a variety of physicochemical methods, such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), and several parameters, including initial concentration, contact time, pH, and adsorbent dosage, were examined. Initial concentration (100 mg/L), adsorbent dose (0.15 g), pH 9, and contact duration 120 min were the settings that worked best. According to model fitting findings, the Temkin isotherm (R2 = 0.93813) and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.9978) both properly represent the adsorption process, showing that the adsorption mechanism was chemisorption and monolayer contact, respectively. The biochar treated with cinnamic acid has effective adsorption properties for removing methylene blue (95%). The electrostatic attraction was discovered to be the main factor in the hybrid system through density functional theory (DFT) analyses of the interfacial interaction between cinnamic acid and the surface of biochar. The adsorption mechanism was shown graphically by the molecule electrostatic potential interaction diagram. These results provide a fresh window for scholars to comprehend adsorption behavior. Global climate change necessitates the rational application of resources and careful policy in the field of waste management regulation. The pyrolytic processing of wastes from agriculture, forestry, and land use, which are significant sources of greenhouse gas emissions, can result in obtaining biochar ameliorants due to the high content of inorganic components in the feedstock that should positively affect the increase in soil fertility. However, there are no generally accepted recommendations on the choice of both feedstock and thermal processing parameters to get carbon-based ameliorants for soils. In this study, organic wastes typical for Western Siberia, including wheat straw, cow manure, pine sawdust, and pine nut shells, were applied as potential soil amendments. For this, the most appropriate pyrolytic processing parameters, as well as heat engineering characteristics and elemental composition of initial biomass and produced biochars, were studied. The influence of the biochar amendment type on the morphometric characteristics of plants (in the example of spring wheat) and soil properties during a greenhouse experiment was assessed. The amendment of biochars from such wastes as wheat straw and cow manure results in improving a number of plant morphometric parameters (plant height, number of leaves, root length) and reducing soil acidity. Thus, the proposed way of organic waste disposal through thermochemical conversion by producing biochar ameliorants can be considered as an effective solution for managing the environmental situation by minimizing the negative impact of waste decomposition on the environment and increasing the productivity of agricultural land by improving soil quality. Generating value from wastes via pyrolysis has been increasingly researched in recent times. Biochar is a versatile pyrolysis product with yields based on many process parameters, including feedstock type and particle size, and operating conditions such as pyrolysis reactor, heating rate, residence time, and reaction temperature. The heterogeneous nature of waste biomass creates challenges in controlling the pyrolysis' product selectivity. Intensive and time-consuming experimental studies are often required to determine product distribution for the pyrolysis of each unique feedstock. Alternatively, prediction models that learn from a wide range of existing experimental data may provide insight into potential yields for different biomass sources. Several advanced models exist in the literature which can predict the yield of biochar and subsequent products based on operating temperature. However, these models do not consider the combined effect of biomass characteristics and operating conditions on biochar yield, which is considered a decisive factor for biochar formation. As such, the objective of this study is to develop a prediction model based on the biomass' fixed carbon content (14–22%), reaction temperature (350–750 °C), and heating rate (5–10 °C/min) using the response surface methodology. Biomasses, date stones, spent coffee grounds, and cow manure have been used to design a Box-Behnken experiment based on the three factors for the biochar yield response. An empirical equation is developed based on a statistically significant quadratic model to produce optimized biochar yield with high prediction accuracy. The study discussed the 3D response and diagnostic plots and conducted validation experiments to confirm the applicability of the developed model. The biochar yields are significantly affected by the fixed carbon content of the feedstock and the reaction temperature, and the experimental validation confirms the accuracy of biochar yield quantification. ABE fermentation has been used to produce biobutanol for a long period of time. The main obstacles consisted of low productivity and cell viability. In this work, the immobilization technique was applied to improve cell culture over the free cell fermentation. Three types of carbonized biomass, cassava rhizome charcoal (CRC), bamboo charcoal (BC), and coconut shell activated carbon (CSAC), were selected and used as carriers for the immobilization of Clostridium beijerinckii JCM 8026. They were characterized by Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area analysis, zeta potential, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to expose their surface and chemical properties. The results pointed out that the immobilized cell onto BC can produce butanol higher than the free cell while lessened by 8.7% and 19.7% in CRC and CSAC, respectively. However, CRC showed the highest cell efficiency after eight sequential reuse cycles. The improvement in butanol production is due to the surface area and the pore size of each of the carbonized materials. The current study aims to valorize C. demersum, a common aquatic plant in lakes, ponds, and quiet streams with little use. FeCl3 -impregnated C. demersum was directly pyrolyzed to yield iron oxide-loaded biochar (IO/BC). Analytical results revealed that 3.19 wt% Fe existed in the resulting composite, including predominant hematite (a-Fe2 O3 ) and minor magnetite (Fe3 O4 ). Moreover, the total pore volume (Vtotal) and the specific surface area (SBET) of IO/BC were 0.091 cm3 /g and 113 m2 /g, respectively. IO/BC was subsequently explored for catalytic rhodamine B (RhB) degradation using H2 O2 . At pH 3.0, 30 °C, 1.00 g/L IO/BC partly eliminated 18% RhB (20 ppm), corresponding to an adsorption capacity of 3.6 mg/g. Upon the addition of 120 ppm H2 O2, total RhB removal reached 92% after 90 min. Furthermore, RhB treatment was consistent with the pseudo-first-order kinetics. The rate constant (k) at 30 °C was 0.0260 min-1, and the activation energy (Ea ) was 72 kJ/mol. The issue of soil salinization poses a significant barrier to sustainable agricultural development, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. Finding methods to enhance the quality of salinized soils while conserving water resources has become a pressing challenge. In arid and semi-arid environments, conserving water resources while maintaining soil health is a critical challenge. This study, conducted from 2021 to 2023, aimed to explore the combined effects of irrigation and biochar application on soil physicochemical properties, such as bulk density, porosity, and pH, as well as on Weighted Plane Soil Water Storage (WPSWS), soil temperature, and soil water evaporation. The experimental design included four irrigation levels, based on actual crop evapotranspiration (ETc): I1 (0.6 ETc), I2 (0.8 ETc), I3 (1.0 ETc), and I4 (1.2 ETc), coupled with four amounts of biochar application (AOBA) of 0, 10, 20, and 30 t ha−1, designated as C0, C10, C20, and C30, respectively. Through binary quadratic regression analysis, we sought to identify the optimal combination of irrigation amount and AOBA for enhancing soil quality. The results revealed that as AOBA increased from 10 to 30 t ha−1, soil bulk density decreased by 1.31–8.58% and soil pH by 0.23–1.31%. However, higher levels of AOBA adversely affected WPSWS , with the C10 treatment showing the maximum improvement in WPSWS , registering an average increase of 6.77, 7.49, and 11.16% compared to the C0, C20, and C30 treatments, respectively. We observed that an increase in irrigation amount significantly elevated accumulated soil evaporation (ASE) and WPSWS but led to a reduction in accumulated soil temperature (AST). The most notable soil quality improvements were recorded when irrigation levels were between 340 and 380 mm and AOBA ranged from 10 to 25 t ha−1. This study provides insights into the effective combination of biochar application and irrigation for optimizing soil resilience, thereby offering a sustainable approach to soil management in water-limited environments. Background: The application of a biochar in agronomical soil offers a dual benefit of improving soil quality and sustainable waste recycling. However, utilizing new organic waste sources requires exploring the biochar's production conditions and application parameters. Woodchips (W) and bone-meat residues (BM) after mechanical deboning from a poultry slaughterhouse were subjected to pyrolysis at 300 °C and 500 °C and applied to cambisol and luvisol soils at ratios of 2% and 5% (w/w). Results: Initially, the impact of these biochar amendments on soil prokaryotes was studied over the course of one year. The influence of biochar variants was further studied on prokaryotes and fungi living in the soil, rhizosphere, and roots of Triticum aestivum L., as well as on soil enzymatic activity. Feedstock type, pyrolysis temperature, application dose, and soil type all played significant roles in shaping both soil and endophytic microbial communities. BM treated at a lower pyrolysis temperature of 300 °C increased the relative abundance of Pseudomonadota while causing a substantial decrease in soil microbial diversity. Conversely, BM prepared at 500 °C favored the growth of microbes known for their involvement in various nutrient cycles. The W biochar, especially when pyrolysed at 500 °C, notably affected microbial communities, particularly in acidic cambisol compared to luvisol. In cambisol, biochar treatments had a significant impact on prokaryotic root endophytes of T. aestivum L. Additionally, variations in prokaryotic community structure of the rhizosphere depended on the increasing distance from the root system (2, 4, and 6 mm). The BM biochar enhanced the activity of acid phosphatase, whereas the W biochar increased the activity of enzymes involved in the carbon cycle (β-glucosidase, β-xylosidase, and β-N-acetylglucosaminidase). Conclusions: These results collectively suggest, that under appropriate production conditions, biochar can exert a positive influence on soil microorganisms, with their response closely tied to the biochar feedstock composition. AbstractMultiplication and perpetuation of plants through sexual and asexual means at desired quantum and quality is one of the important aspects. Growing media plays an important role in the multiplication of the planting material. Growing media consists of mixtures of components that provide support to plant growth. The selection of suitable growing media plays a crucial role in the production of quality planting material for plantation and spice crops. Various factors such as anchorage, water and nutrient availability, aeration, pH regulation, and microbial habitat of growing media ensure robust development in the nursery stage. The use of appropriate growing media enhances root establishment, nutrient uptake, and overall plant vigor, thereby contributing to the production of high-quality planting material. Additionally, growing media discussed in this review offer insights into optimizing growth parameters and enhancing the yield potential of crops like black pepper, ginger, turmeric, nutmeg, tamarind, garcinia, curry leaf, clove, cinnamon, vanilla, saffron, tea, coffee, oil palm, areca nut, and coconut. Understanding the specific requirements of each crop and selecting suitable growing media are essential steps toward achieving sustainable and productive plantation and spice crop cultivation. The study focused on the photodegradation of profoxydim, a low-toxicity cyclohexanedione herbicide commonly used in rice crops, under simulated sunlight conditions. Profoxydim's behavior in paddy field conditions is not well understood, and this research aimed to fill that gap, particularly examining the effect of commonly utilized organic amendments such as biochar (BC) on its degradation. Results indicated that profoxydim degrades rapidly, with a half-life of 2.4 ± 0.3 h in paddy water and 1.03 ± 0.1 h in paddy soil. However, when BC was introduced, the degradation slowed significantly, extending the half-lives to 3.1 ± 0.2 h in water and 3.07 ± 0.5 h in soil. The study identified five degradation products (DPs) using TOF mass accuracy measurements and MS/MS spectra fragmentation. Two of these DPs were found to be more stable than profoxydim itself. Additionally, the research proposed a novel photodegradation pathway, highlighting processes such as homolytic C-N bond cleavage, photoisomerization, and photoinduced oxidation. The study's findings contribute new insights into the environmental fate of profoxydim, offering a deeper understanding of its transformation in rice paddy fields and aiding in the assessment of potential risks associated with its residues in agricultural environments. Wastewater treatment is of utmost importance in providing all equitable and safe drinking water. In the present study, a chitosan impregnated sugarcane bagasse biochar SCNC biocomposite has been synthesized for the removal of Congo red (CR) dye from an aqueous solution. The SCNC biocomposite was thoroughly characterized through Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) and N2 adsorption isotherm, point of zero charge (pHPZC), elemental analysis, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) analysis. Moreover, SCNC biocomposite was further employed to remove CR dye from the aqueous solution in batch mode. The SCNC biocomposite could remove more than 95.0% of CR at an initial concentration of (100mgL− 1), adsorbent dosage (0.05 g), time (200 min), pH ~ 3. The SCNC biocomposite achieved maximum adsorption capacity of 170mgg− 1. The equilibrium adsorption data for CR dye were best fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model with R2, 0.999. The kinetic and isotherm were statistically investigated using the chi-square statistic (χ2), mean square error (MSE), and the sum of squares error (SSE) Because of the higher correlation coefficient (R2 ≥ 0.999) and lower error functions, the equilibrium CR adsorption isotherms for a single-dye system fit Langmuir and the PSO kinetic model. The thermodynamic studies revealed the spontaneous and endothermic nature of adsorption of CR dye onto SCNC biocomposite. The SCNC biocomposite can be regenerated up to the 5th cycle successfully. The combination of biochar and nitrogen (N) fertilization in agricultural salt-affected soils is an effective strategy for amending the soil and promoting production. To investigate the effect of nitrogen reduction combined with biochar application on a soda saline soil and soybean growth in black soil areas, a pot experiment was set up with two biochar application levels, 0 (B0) and 4.5 t/hm2 (B1); two biochar application depths, 0-20 cm (H1) and 0-40 cm (H2); and two nitrogen application levels, conventional nitrogen application (N0) and nitrogen reduction of 15% (N1). The results showed that the application of biochar improved the saline soil status and significantly increased soybean yield under lower nitrogen application. Moreover, increasing the depth of biochar application enhanced the effectiveness of biochar in reducing saline soil barriers to crop growth, which promoted soybean growth. Increasing the depth of biochar application increased the K+ and Ca2+ contents, soil nitrogen content, N fertilizer agronomic efficiency, leaf total nitrogen, N use efficiency, AN, Tr, gs, SPAD, leaf water potential, water content and soybean yield and its components. However, the Na+ content, SAR, ESP, Na+/K+, Ci and water use efficiency decreased with increasing biochar depth. Among the treatments with low nitrogen input and biochar, B1H1N1 resulted in the greatest soil improvement in the 0-20 cm soil layer compared with B0N0; for example, K+ content increased by 61.87%, Na+ content decreased by 44.80%, SAR decreased by 46.68%, and nitrate nitrogen increased by 26.61%. However, in the 20-40 cm soil layer, B1H2N1 had the greatest effect on improving the soil physicochemical properties, K+ content increased by 62.54%, Na+ content decreased by 29.76%, SAR decreased by 32.85%, and nitrate nitrogen content increased by 30.77%. In addition, compared with B0N0, total leaf nitrogen increased in B1H2N1 by 25.07%, N use efficiency increased by 6.7%, N fertilizer agronomic efficiency increased by 32.79%, partial factor productivity of nitrogen increased by 28.37%, gs increased by 22.10%, leaf water potential increased by 27.33% and water content increased by 6.44%. In conclusion, B1H2N1 had the greatest effect on improving the condition of saline soil; it not only effectively regulated the distribution of salt in soda saline soil and provided a low-salt environment for crop growth but also activated deep soil resources. Therefore, among all treatments investigated in this study, B1H2N1 was considered most suitable for improving the condition of soda saline soil in black soil areas and enhancing the growth of soybean plants. Heavy metals (HMs) contamination has gained much attention due to its high degree of toxicity for living organisms. Therefore, different techniques are underway to eradicate HMs from the environment. Among the biological techniques, phytoremediation is a suitable method, but owing to the slow rate and chance of HMs penetration into the food chain, alternative techniques are needed to reduce their phytotoxicity, and biochar is one of them. Due to the diverse characteristics, biochar immobilizes HMs in the soil by improving soil pH, ion exchange, electrostatic interactions, complexation, precipitation, surface adsorption, and microbial activation. Thereby, amendment of biochar in the HMs-contaminated soils reduces HMs toxicity to plants and limits their penetration into the food chain. In contrast, some biochars have also been studied to induce metal availability in soils and subsequently its uptake by plants. This dual role of biochar depends on the feedstock of biochar, incineration temperature, and the rate of application. Moreover, biochar treatments enhance plant growth under HMs stress by improving nutrient availability, water retention capacity, scavenging of reactive oxygen species, and photosynthetic efficiency. Owing to the beneficial characteristics of biochar in HMs-contaminated sites, the number of publications has tremendously increased. Additionally, the plant species and the types of HMs that have been tested frequently under biochar treatments in these articles have been studied. Overall, the current study would help in understanding the mechanisms of how biochar influences phytoremediation of HMs and improves plant growth in HMs-polluted soils and the current scenario of the available literature. Fibrous and pioneer roots are essential in the uptake and transport of water and nutrients from the soil. Their dynamic may be influenced by the changing of soil physicochemical properties due to the addition of biochar, which, in turn, has been shown to improve plant growth and productivity in the short term. However, the long-term effects of biochar application on root dynamics are still widely unknown. In this study, we aimed to investigate the long-term effects of biochar application on grapevine fibrous and pioneer root dynamics and morphological traits in relation to soil characteristics. To this aim, grapevine plants amended in 2009 and 2010 respectively with one and two doses of biochar, were analyzed in their fibrous and pioneer root production and turnover rate, standing biomass, length, and specific root length, over two growing seasons. Our findings demonstrate that in the long term, biochar application significantly increased soil pH, nutrient availability, and water-holding capacity causing a decrease in the production of fibrous and pioneer roots which is reflected in a reduction of the root web characterized though by a higher turnover rate. Furthermore, we observed that these root morpho-dynamical changes were of higher magnitude in the upper soil layers (0-20 cm) and, at least in the long term, with no significant difference between the two doses. These results suggest that in the long term, biochar can be a powerful tool for improving soil quality, which in turn lowers carbon-cost investment toward the root production and maintenance of a reduced root web that might be directed into grapevine growth and productivity. Such effects shed some light on the root plastic and functional adaptation to modified soil conditions facilitated by the long-term application of biochar, which can be used for implementing adaptive agricultural practices to face the current climate change in a frame of sustainable agricultural policies. AbstractThe foundation bearing capacity in island reef infrastructure construction is often inadequate due to the poor engineering properties of calcareous sand. Enzyme-induced carbonate precipitation (EICP) has emerged as an efficient and environmentally friendly method to improve these properties, significantly enhancing the mechanical behavior of calcareous sand. However, the effectiveness of EICP is constrained by environmental factors that affect free urease activity and the limited availability of nucleation sites. To further improve the mechanical properties of EICP-reinforced calcareous sand, this study explores the addition of biochar to the sand. The characteristics of the samples were evaluated using unconfined compressive strength tests, calcium carbonate content measurements, and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicate that incorporating biochar into EICP significantly increases calcium carbonate production, strengthens the reinforced sand, and reduces surface porosity. This improvement is attributed to biochar’s surface properties, which provide additional nucleation sites for calcium carbonate formation, enhancing calcium carbonate content and sand strength. However, controlling the biochar content at approximately 5% is crucial to avoid excessive porosity, which could weaken the material. In exploring the potential of agricultural waste as an efficient adsorbent, acid‐activated coconut husk biochar was prepared, characterized and applied to remove amoxicillin from wastewater. The mechanism of adsorption was also investigated through isotherm and kinetic studies. The biochar was activated with HNO3 for 2 h at 25°C and investigated under varying experimental conditions of pH (1–11), initial amoxicillin concentration (0.5–2.5 mg/L), adsorbent dosage (2–20 mg) and contact time (0–24 h). The adsorption process was characterized by rapid attainment of adsorption equilibrium and high values of adsorption capacity. Acid activation had a significant impact on the adsorptive capacity of biochar as removal efficiency improved from 90% (over an hour) to 98.9% (within 40 min). The FTIR results confirmed the characteristic adsorption peaks of C‐H, =C‐H, C=C, C‐O, C=O and O‐H, suggesting the dominant presence of aromatic and carbonyl functional groups on the surface of the biochar. Adjustments in peak shapes and transmittance were observed for these functional groups after the adsorption; highlighting the likely interaction between the biochar and the amoxicillin during the adsorption which has been succinctly proposed. The SEM micrographs showed the growth of leaf‐like flakes of irregular shapes and pores essential for the adsorption. The rate and mechanism of adsorption were driven by the variable surface charge of the adsorbent and the degree of ionization of the adsorbates, which were largely controlled by the solution pH. Adsorption rates were highest in the acidic medium, peaking around a pH of 3, then remained relatively stable between pHs of 5 and 7 before reducing dramatically with increasing pH in the alkaline region. The adsorption best followed the Langmuir model of isotherm while the kinetics mimicked the pseudo–second order (PSO). This study explores the use of biochar, derived from Borassus flabellifer male inflorescence biomass as an alternative support for titanium dioxide (TiO2) to enhance its photocatalytic activity in degrading Congo red (CR) dye pollutant. The biochar was synthesized through controlled pyrolysis and subsequently combined with TiO2 to form a nanocomposite via hydrothermal method. The primary goal of creating this nanocomposite is to breakdown azo dyes, such as CR, using UV irradiation. Comprehensive characterization techniques, including XRD, FTIR, SEM coupled with EDAX, XPS, and UV‐DRS confirmed the successful integration of biochar with TiO2. The enhanced photocatalyst performance is attributed to the increased surface area, improved light absorption, and efficient charge separation facilitated by the biochar support. Furthermore, the experimental parameters were optimized using the response surface methodology (RSM). These studies demonstrated that the CR concentration, contact duration, pH, and photocatalyst quantity are critical factors in the photocatalytic oxidation process. The strong correlation coefficient for the first order model indicated that the data described by the RSM, agreed with the obtained results. This study highlights the potential of agricultural waste‐derived biochar as a cost‐effective and sustainable support for TiO₂, offering a viable solution for the remediation of dye‐contaminated water. This work aims to allocate coffee grounds waste to the production of biochar from pyrolysis under different temperatures (350 °C and 500 °C), to add value to it. The resulting materials were characterized by immediate, elemental, thermogravimetric analysis, SEM, FT‐IR, XRD and Raman spectroscopy. Additionally, the need to activate the biochar produced for the desired use was evaluated. The obtained biochars were applied in electroanalysis in the manufacture of modified carbon paste electrodes. This choice was made due to the possibility of reaching a high sensitivity towards the determination of Cu2+ ions. The differential pulse adsorptive anodic stripping voltammetry technique was applied to perform the Cu2+ determination and, in this case, several parameters were optimized, including biochar' percentage, pH of pre‐accumulation step and reduction/stripping step, pre‐accumulation time, potential and time of reduction of adsorbed‐Cu2+. From this, the proposed modified electrode showed a linear voltammetric response towards Cu2+ in the range of 66.1 to 3997.3 ppb, with a limit of detection of 31.8 ppb, in addition to having been satisfactorily applied in the analysis of water samples (recoveries close to 100 %). Low organic matter content is one of the main constraints in arid and semiarid regions. This constraint and its negative influences on soils and plant growth may be alleviated by biochar (BC). Furthermore, improving soil physical and hydraulic attributes by application of biochar has received increased attention. Therefore, in the present study, the effects of sugarcane bagasse-derived biochar on the structural stability, water availability, and pore-size distribution (PSD) of three texturally different calcareous soils collected from different agro-climatologically regions were examined during a long-term experiment. Low and high-temperature biochars, produced in a muffle furnace by the traditional slow pyrolysis method at 300 °C (BC300) and 600 °C (BC600) were evaluated. Pots (15 kg) were filled with three different silty-clay Inceptisols (SCInc), silty-clay-loam Alfisols (SCLAlf), and loam Aridisols (LArid) soils mixed with 0 (control), 1, 2, and 3 w/w% of BC300 and BC600 during 540 days of incubation. The high energy moisture characteristic (HEMC) data was modeled using a modified van Genuchten function to quantify aggregate stability through stability ratio (SR) and structural stability index (SSI). The plant available water (PAW), least limiting water range (LLWR), and integral water capacity (IWC) were calculated with two matric suctions (h) of 330 cm for field capacity (FC) and 15,000 cm for permanent wilting point (PWP). Then the integral energy (EI) values were calculated (EIIWC). Results indicated that the incorporation of 3 w/w% biochar significantly (p < 0.01) increased SR (35 to 100%) and SSI (21 to 28%) indices in all three soils. Biochar significantly increased modal suction (MS) in LArid soils (5 to 158%); whereas, decreased MS of the other soils (3 to 43%). MS, SR, and SSI of BC300 and BC600-treated soils were not significantly different. PAW, LLWR, and IWC significantly decreased in the SCInc (18 to 61%, 8 to 44%, and 6 to 35%) and SCLAlf (8 to 44%, 18 to 35%, and 20 to 47%) soils and increased in LArid (4 to 54%, 3 to 61%, and 24 to 111%) soil with increasing biochar doses. There were no changes in EIIWC in biochar-treated LArid soil where PAW, LLWR, and IWC increased. Biochar increased EIIWC across the studied soil from 1% to 3.38 folds, thereby increasing the gradient of water potential to absorb the available water. Soil and soil-biochar mixtures exhibited heterogeneous and multimodal pore-size distribution (PSD). Biochar promoted the PSD peaks related to water-transmitting pores in SCInc and SCLAlf soils while decreased in LArid soil. In conclusion, results indicated that among the applied levels of biochar, the application of 3 w/w% biochar is suggested as a suitable way to improve soil physical behavior and structural stability. The search for low-cost and effective adsorbents for the removal of organic dyes from contaminated water is urgently needed. The substantial amount of waste mushroom cultivation substrates generated in practical production can serve as an ideal material for the preparation of adsorbents. In this study, we investigated the main control parameters affecting the performance of magnetic mushroom substrate biochar and optimized the process of preparing biochar by using the Plackett–Burman and central composite design methods. Various analytical techniques including SEM, EDX, BET, and VSM were used to characterize the biochar. The results indicate that the carbonization temperature had the most significant impact on the yield and adsorption performance of biochar. Under the conditions of a carbonization temperature of 600 °C, a carbonization retention time of 1 h, and an impregnation ratio of 0.1, the yield and methylene blue adsorption value of magnetic biochar were 42.54% and 2297.04 μg/g, respectively, with a specific surface area of 37.17 m2/g. This biochar effectively removed methylene blue from the solution, demonstrating a high economic efficiency for wastewater treatment and pollution control. Furthermore, the adsorption–desorption cycle studies revealed its excellent stability and reusability. Additionally, based on the response surface methodology, a three-dimensional surface model of the adsorption performance of magnetic biochar under different carbonization conditions was established, providing a theoretical basis for the preparation of magnetic biochar from agricultural wastes. This study developed mycelial biochar composites, BQH-AN and BQH-MV, with stable physicochemical properties and significantly improved adsorption capabilities through microbial modification. The results showed that the specific surface area and porosity of BQH-AN (3547.47 m2 g−1 and 2.37 cm3 g−1) and BQH-MV (3205.59 m2 g−1 and 2.46 cm3 g−1) were significantly higher than those of biochar BQH (2641.31 m2 g−1 and 1.81 cm3 g−1), which was produced without microbial treatment. In adsorption experiments using rhodamine B (RhB), tetracycline hydrochloride (TC), and Cr (VI), BQH-AN showed maximum adsorption capacities of 1450.79 mg g−1 for RhB, 1608.43 mg g−1 for TC, and 744.15 mg g−1 for Cr(VI). BQH-MV showed similarly strong performance, with 1329.85 mg g−1 for RhB, 1526.46 mg g−1 for TC, and 752.27 mg g−1 for Cr(VI). These values were not only higher than those of BQH but also outperformed most other biochar adsorbents. Additionally, after five reuse cycles, the pollutant removal efficiency of the mycelial biochar composites remained above 69%, demonstrating excellent regenerative ability. This study not only produced biochar with superior adsorption properties but also highlighted microbial modification as an effective way to enhance lignocellulosic biochar performance, paving the way for further biomass development. In this work, rice-husk-derived biochar (RBC) was synthesized by using simple one-step pyrolysis strategies and served as catalysts to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for degrading sulfamethoxazole (SMX). When the annealing temperature (T) = 800 °C, RBC800 exhibits the typical hardwood structure with several micropores and mesoporous. Furthermore, RBC800 obtains more defect sites than RBC600, RBC700, and RBC900. In the RBC800/PMS system, the removal rate of the SMX reached 92.0% under optimal conditions. The kinetic reaction rate constant (kobs) of the RBC800/PMS system was 0.009 min−1, which was about 1.50, 1.28, and 4.50 times that of the RBC600/PMS (kobs = 0.006 min−1), RBC700/PMS (kobs = 0.007 min−1), and RBC900/PMS (kobs = 0.002 min−1) systems, respectively. In the RBC800/PMS system, sulfate radical (SO4•−) is the main active species. Compared with other active sites, the hydroxyl group (C-OH) on the surface of RBC800 interacts more strongly with PMS, which is more likely to promote the stretching of the O-O bond of the PMS, thus breaking into the activated state and significantly reducing the activation energy required for reaction. The degradation intermediates of SMX were speculated, and the toxicity analysis was conducted. Straw, a predominant agricultural residue, represents a significant waste product. Harnessing its potential is of paramount importance both in terms of research and economic value. In this study, chemically pretreated corn straw was infused with distinct microbial fungal mycelium variants and subsequently transformed into a series of biochars through a process involving carbonization and activation. The findings revealed enhancements in the specific surface area and total pore volume of mycelium-doped straw biochars compared to the original corn straw biochar (BCS). Additionally, discernible disparities were observed in their physical and chemical attributes, encompassing functional groups, surface chemistry, and micro-morphology. Notably, in water-based antibiotic removal experiments focusing on tetracycline hydrochloride (TH) and chloramphenicol (CP), the mycelium-doped straw biochars outperformed BCS. Their maximum adsorption capacities for TH and CP surpassed those of alternative adsorbents, including other biochars. Impressively, even after five cycles, the biochar exhibited a removal rate exceeding 80%, attesting to its robust stability. This study successfully emphasized the efficacy of incorporating fungal mycelium to enhance the adsorption properties of straw-based biochar, introducing a new theoretical basis for the development of lignocellulosic materials. Carbon-based adsorbents like graphene and its derivatives, carbon nanotubes, activated carbon, and biochar are commonly used for removing heavy metals from water solutions. The changeable exterior functional groups of efficient carbon adsorbents for HMs are one of their key features. Detailed documentation of the synthesis and interactions of functionalized carbon adsorbents with metals in an aqueous solution is crucial for advancing the utilization of these materials in HM exclusion. This paper reviews the carbon-based adsorbent for material removal. It examines several carbon adsorbents' exterior functional groups to better understand how they eliminate HMs from aqueous solutions. First, the controlling mechanisms for the deletion of aqueous HMs by carbon adsorbents are described, with a particular emphasis on the functions of exterior functional groups. The following section lists and organises the numerous synthetic techniques that are frequently employed to add heteroatoms to carbon surfaces, particularly oxygen, nitrogen, and sulphur, to increase their exterior properties and their sorptive capabilities towards HMs in aqueous solutions. Following that, the impact of dissimilar functional groups on the adsorption characteristics of HMs on carbon adsorbents is examined. While the adsorption capacity and metal removal efficiency of the changed carbonaceous materials are high, the alteration operation is complicated, particularly chemical modification. This review analyses the shortcomings that are now present and offers ideas for future research while emphasising the removal of inorganic and organic components utilising carbon-based materials as adsorbents. In summary, there is room for additional study on the efficacy of functional carbon adsorbents for the removal of heavy metals and their potential uses in various fields. This includes the development of new materials and techniques to enhance adsorption efficiency and selectivity for specific heavy metals, along with the investigation of additional functionalities for these carbon adsorbents in various industrial processes. In the present study, biocomposite materials were created by incorporating biochar (BC) at rates of 1, 2.5, and 5 wt.% into a poly(butylene succinate) (PBSu) matrix using a two-stage melt polycondensation procedure in order to provide understanding of the aging process. The biocomposites in film form were exposed to UV irradiation for 7, 14, and 21 days. Photostability was examined by several methods, such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), which proved that new carbonyl and hydroxyl groups were formed during UV exposure. Moreover, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) measurements were employed to record the apparent UV effect in their crystalline morphology and thermal transitions. According to the molecular weight measurements of composites, it was apparent that by increasing the biochar content, the molecular weight decreased at a slower rate. Tensile strength tests were performed to evaluate the deterioration of their mechanical properties during UV exposure, while Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images illustrated the notable surface alternations. Cracks were formed at higher UV exposure times, to a lesser extent in PBSu/BC composites than in neat PBSu. Furthermore, the mechanism of the thermal degradation of neat PBSu and its biocomposites prior to and upon UV exposure was studied by Pyrolysis–Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (Py–GC/MS). Spent mushroom compost (SMC) is a waste byproduct generated by the mushroom industry, with the current disposal methods involving landfills or incineration, causing environmental problems. This study introduces a cascading valorization based on circular economy. A water-washing pretreatment is suggested to reduce the ash content and improve the calorific value. Furthermore, an oxidative torrefaction is proposed to enhance the physicochemical properties and evaluate the residence time, temperature, and initial weight effects. The investigation revealed that the calorific value increased by 49.46% in the best water washing scenario and the SMC contains laccase. During SMC torrefaction, mass and energy yields exceeded 80%, and the calorific value was improved. Finally, torrefaction in situ CO2 capture was achieved by forming CaCO3, with a mass fraction increase of up to 7.4%. The study describes the cascading innovation use of this residue on a TRL4 higher than previously reported studies, thereby contributing to gaining an understanding of sustainable industrial mushroom production. This study employs machine learning models to predict the adsorption characteristics of biochar-activated carbon derived from waste wood. Activated carbon is a high-performance adsorbent utilized in various fields such as air purification, water treatment, energy production, and storage. However, its characteristics vary depending on the activation conditions or raw materials, making explaining or predicting them challenging using physicochemical or mathematical methods. Therefore, using machine learning techniques to determine the adsorption characteristics of activated carbon in advance will provide economic and time benefits for activated carbon production. Datasets, consisting of 108 points, were used to predict the adsorption characteristics of biochar-activated carbon derived from waste wood. The input variables were the activation conditions, and the iodine number of activated carbon was used as the output variable. The datasets were randomly split into 75% for training and 25% for model validation and normalized by the min-max function. Four models, including artificial neural networks, random forests, extreme gradient boosting, and support vector machines, were used to predict the adsorption properties of biochar-activated carbon. After optimization, the artificial neural network model was identified as the best model, with the highest coefficient determination (0.96) and the lowest mean squared error (0.004017). As a result of the SHAP analysis, activation time was the most crucial variable influencing the adsorption properties. The growing water scarcity jeopardizes crop production for global food security, a problem poised to worsen under climate change–induced drought. Amending soils with locally derived biochar from pyrolyzed agricultural residues may enhance soil moisture retention and resilience, in addition to climate change mitigation. However, prior studies on the hydrologic benefits of biochar focused on optimal moisture, not water‐limited conditions where biochar's large wettable surface area could aid plants and microbes. We hypothesized that biochars differing in feedstocks would positively augment soil moisture and respiration, with overall impacts most beneficial under drier conditions. Using water vapor sorption isotherms, we used film theory to estimate the specific surface area (SSA) of biochars. We then modeled and tested the moisture retention of a coarse‐textured soil amended with biochar. Additionally, a 109‐day lab incubation experiment was also conducted to examine biochar effects on respiration across a moisture range spanning optimal to wilting point. Among seven tested biochars, almond shell biochar significantly increased soil moisture and yield the second highest SSA. Despite drying treatments, the amended soil maintained higher respiration than the control, indicating enhanced biological activity. The results demonstrate biochars counter drying effects in coarse soils through physical and biological mechanisms linked to increased sorptive capacity. Our findings contribute to the development of sustainable water and waste management strategies tailored to the needs of California Central Valley, where the potential for biochar application is substantial. Above all, our research fills a crucial gap by providing context‐specific insights that can inform the effective utilization of locally produced biochars in the face of increasing water scarcity and excess biomass challenges. Biochar is the solid carbonaceous product of biomass pyrolysis. The properties of biochar depend on the biomass feedstock as well as the pyrolysis temperature and time. Therefore, biochars with different properties and functionalities can be produced. Biochar research has been intensive in the past 15 years, focusing mainly on soil applications, wastewater treatment, and contaminant remediation. However, a formal definition of biochar and related terms is missing, which hinders the standardization of scientific results worldwide and the scaling-up of research at the industrial level. Furthermore, an official terminology may promote the development of a harmonized legal framework for biochar production and applications, both at regional and national levels. This glossary of terms consists of 178 scientifically sound definitions of the most commonly used terms in biochar research. The definitions of this glossary are interconnected, allowing the reader to further explore the synergies between terms. The distribution of terms reflects the multidisciplinarity of biochar research: chemistry, material science and engineering, and soil science are the main disciplines represented here. The list of terms is by no means exhaustive and the strategic objective of this effort is to develop a dynamic document in which more terms will be added in the future, and the existing ones will be refined, as biochar research evolves. Biochar, a carbon‐rich material derived from organic biomass under low‐O2 conditions, has gained importance due to its role in mitigating climate change by sequestering carbon. It can be used as an alternative energy source and has applications in nutrient cycling, improving soil properties, and removing heavy metals and organic pollutants, thus contributing to sustainable agriculture and environmental remediation. In the face of alarming climate change, rising energy demand, and increasing pollution, the integration of biochar production into biorefineries is an important strategy to promote a sustainable and circular economy. Adopting a holistic approach to biomass utilization by developing strategies to maximize biochar production along with the production of other value‐added products while improving its quality can increase biorefineries' overall sustainability and efficiency. Fine‐tuning the biorefinery process from feedstock selection to co‐production, optimizing pyrolysis conditions, and integrating it with other technologies can help to achieve this goal while generating zero waste and diversified revenues. With the biochar market growing exponentially, further research into the long‐term impact of biochar on carbon sequestration and its application in the environment is the next step. Anaerobic digestion and composting of biowastes are vital pathways to recycle carbon and nutrients for agriculture. However, plastic contamination of soil amendments and fertilizers made from biowastes is a relevant source of (micro‐) plastics in (agricultural) ecosystems. To avoid this contamination, plastic containing biowastes could be pyrolyzed to eliminate the plastic, recycle most of the nutrients, and create carbon sinks when the resulting biochar is applied to soil. Literature suggests plastic elimination mainly by devolatilization at co‐pyrolysis temperatures of > 520°C. However, it is uncertain if the presence of plastic during biomass pyrolysis induces the formation of organic contaminants or has any other adverse effects on biochar properties. Here, we produced biochar from wood residues (WR) obtained from sieving of biowaste derived digestate. The plastic content was artificially enriched to 10%, and this mixture was pyrolyzed at 450°C and 600°C. Beech wood (BW) chips and the purified, that is, (macro‐) plastic‐free WR served as controls. All biochars produced were below limit values of the European Biochar Certificate (EBC) regarding trace element content and organic contaminants. Under study conditions, pyrolysis of biowaste, even when contaminated with plastic, can produce a biochar suitable for agricultural use. However, thermogravimetric and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic analysis of the WR + 10% plastics biochar suggested the presence of plastic residues at pyrolysis temperatures of 450°C. More research is needed to define minimum requirements for the pyrolysis of plastic containing biowaste and to cope with the automated identification and determination of plastic types in biowaste at large scales. Biochar is the product of intentional pyrolysis of organic feedstocks. It is made under controlled conditions in order to achieve desired physico‐chemical characteristics. These characteristics ultimately affect biochar properties as a soil amendment. When biochar is used for carbon storage, an important property is its persistence in soil, often described by the proportion of biochar carbon remaining in soil after a 100 years (Fperm$$ {\mathrm{F}}_{\mathrm{perm}} $$). We analyzed published data on 1230 biochars to re‐evaluate the effect of pyrolysis parameters on biochar characteristics and the possibility to predict Fperm$$ {\mathrm{F}}_{\mathrm{perm}} $$ from the maximum temperature reached during pyrolysis (HTT). We showed that biochar ash and nitrogen (N) contents were mostly affected by feedstock type. The oxygen to carbon (O:C) and hydrogen to carbon (H:C) ratios were mostly affected by the extent of pyrolysis (a combination of HTT and pyrolysis duration), except for non (ligno)cellulosic feedstocks (plastic waste, sewage sludge). The volatile matter (VM) content was affected by both feedstock type and the extent of pyrolysis. We demonstrated that HTT is the main driver of H:C ‐‐ an indicator of persistence ‐‐ but that it is not measured accurately enough to precisely predict H:C, let alone persistence. We examined the equations to estimate Fperm$$ {\mathrm{F}}_{\mathrm{perm}} $$ available in the literature and showed that Fperm$$ {\mathrm{F}}_{\mathrm{perm}} $$ calculated from HTT presented little agreement with Fperm$$ {\mathrm{F}}_{\mathrm{perm}} $$ calculated from H:C. The sign and magnitude of the bias depended on the equation used to calculate Fperm$$ {\mathrm{F}}_{\mathrm{perm}} $$ and the dispersion was usually large. This could lead to improper compensation of carbon emissions and wrong reporting of carbon sinks in national carbon accounting schemes. We recommend not to use HTT as a predictor for persistence and stress the importance to rapidly develop more accurate proxies of biochar C persistence in soil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biochar is a product of carbon rich mass produced through the pyrolysis of organic wastes. Several reviews have been published demonstrating the effects of biochar on soil health, plant productivity and on the amelioration of adverse effects of climate. Depending upon the type of biomass and pyrolysis conditions maintained, biochar acquire specific characteristics like cation exchange capacity, pore size, surface area, mineral contents, energy density and adsorption capacity and help in serving a prime role in agriculture, climate change and waste management. Biochar significance also stems from its ability to sequester significant amount of carbon and reducing the efflux of greenhouse gas emission in the environment. Biochar is an important ecological niche for microbes, as biochar porous structure and high surface area, if maintained, helps in proliferation of microbes (plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and mycorrhization). Biochar amendment has multiple effects on biological and biochemical properties, e.g. retention of nutrients (N, P, K), organic matter (C), water holding capacity and soil respiration, ultimately improving crop yield. In addition, it facilitates in providing tolerance against different abiotic and biotic stresses. Surface modification of biochar with nanomaterial is a promising strategy affecting its sorption capacity for contaminant removal. This review focuses on evaluating the role of biochar alone and in combination with PGPR on soil health, plant productivity under stress, enhancement of systemic resistance in plants and waste management. Silkworm excrement (SE) and silkworm excrement-derived biochar (BC) were applied to atrazine-contaminated soil at the rates of 0% and 0.5% (w/w), respectively. The effect of organic amendments on sorption capacity, microbial biomass carbon, enzyme activity (dehydrogenase, urease and catalase) and bacterial composition in soil were evaluated. Atrazine significantly decreased the microbial activity and diversity in soil. Both SE and BC treatments increased the sorption of atrazine in soil. SE treatment significantly increased the microbial biomass carbon and enzyme activity in contaminated soil. Unlike the addition of silkworm excrement, BC treatment had no significant effect on dehydrogenase activity. Additionally, Illumina-MiSeq sequencing analyses showed that the two organic amendments increased the Shannon index of bacteria. SE treatment improved the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes. This study examines the use of surface-modified biochar as a porous electrode material for the capacitive deionization removal of chloride and fluoride ions. Incorporation of titanium dioxide and amine groups on biochar aims to increase surface-active sites, facilitate salt ion diffusion, and improve charge efficiency and cation/anion selectivity in asymmetric capacitive deionization. Titania, amine, and activated biochar are denoted as TB, AmB, and AcB, respectively. Physical and electrochemical characterizations were performed to investigate the surface properties of fabricated materials. At the optimum TiO2 loading of 5% (TB-05), the specific capacitance of TB-05 electrode was improved by 35% at scan rate of 1 mV s–1 in comparison to the AcB electrode, despite a decrease in the specific surface area. Three different asymmetric capacitive deionization cell designs—AmB||TB-05, AcB||TB-05, and AmB||AcB—and two symmetrical cell designs—AcB||AcB and TB-05||TB-05 (anode||cathode)—were tested. A symmetric cell design TB-05||TB-05 had a NaCl removal capacity of 8.51 mg g−1, a 42% improvement in comparison to a symmetric AcB cell (6.01 mg g−1). Further, an asymmetric cell AmB||TB-05 showed 67% charge efficiency improvement over symmetric AcB cell, likely due to a reduced co-ion effect. For fluoride removal, a symmetric TB-05 cell showed a removal capacity of 3.51 mg g−1. This study promotes simple surface-modification methods to make inexpensive commercial biochar into a sustainable, and efficient electrode material available for a scale-up asymmetric capacitive deionization. The flake biochar electrode materials with fast ion transport function were prepared by KOH activation walnut shell used as raw material. The effects of carbonization temperature and KOH-to-biochar ratio were systematically evaluated using physicochemical characterization and electrochemical performance testing. The optimized walnut shell biochar (WSC800–2), produced at 800 °C with a KOH-to-biochar ration of 2:1, exhibited an exceptional specific surface area (2,287 m2 g−1), the highest porosity (0.824 cm3 g−1), and an excellent specific capacitance (369.51 F g−1, 10 mV s−1). Furthermore, in desalination experiments, WSC800–2 achieved a high salt adsorption capacity of 15.70 mg g−1 at 1.2 V, 500 mg l−1 NaCl solution. The electrode also exhibited outstanding cycling stability, retaining 97.0% of its performance after 10 adsorption/desorption cycles. This research investigated the properties and potential environmental hazards associated with biochars derived from rice husk (RH) and sugar beet pulp (SBP), both of which are rich in heavy metals (HMs). The results indicated that the concentration of various HM fractions is significantly affected by the type of feedstock and the pyrolysis temperature. Specifically, the total concentrations of HMs in biochars produced at 600 °C were found to be 10–140% higher than those in the original biomasses, a phenomenon attributed to the precipitation of HMs. Cd was a notable exception, exhibiting a reduction of 3–7% in the resultant biochars when compared to biomass, likely attributable to its volatilization. The results also revealed that the F1 + F2 fraction of HMs were largely transformed into F3 + F4 fraction during combustion, indicating that pyrolysis may reduce the ecotoxicity of HMs present in contaminated biomass. However, the process did not effectively diminish the F1 and F2 fractions of Cr and Cd. Elevated pyrolysis temperature significantly enhanced the reduction of HMs phytoavailability. Specifically, the phytoavailability of HMs in biochars produced at 600 °C exhibited a decrease ranging from 10 to 92% when compared to the original biomass. Conversely, an unexpected rise in the phytoavailable fractions of Cr and Cd was noted in both RH and SBP biochars as the pyrolytic temperature increased, which correspondingly raised the potential ecological risk index (PERI). All materials analyzed exhibited a very high risk level, with PERI values exceeding 800, primarily due to the significant toxicity of Cd. Excluding Cd from consideration, the biomasses and their resultant biochars displayed PERI values ranging from 7 to 13. It is important to acknowledge that pyrolysis may not effectively diminish the environmental toxicity associated with HMs present in contaminated biomass, thereby limiting its safe application. In this experiment four agro-waste based biomass residues (soybean stover-SSb, buckwheat stover-BWb, Artemisia vulgaris- AVb and Chromolaena odorata-COb) was valorized into low cost amendment called biochar followed by compositional characterization for their application in heavy metal removal. Investigation was carried out on the removal of the most common heavy metal ions including arsenic, cadmium, lead, nickel, zinc, and copper through adsorption on four types of biomass valorised biochar. According to preliminary testing, all the biochar was effective to eliminate a mixture of six heavy metals from the aqueous phase, with the removal of arsenic being the most removed and nickel being the least. In comparison to no biochar treatment, the average removal rate of heavy metal from aqueous solution using four distinct types of biochar was 45.75–62.42% (Cd), 43.64–56.33% (Pb), 41.85–59.73% (Ni), 42.87–60.28% (Zn), 45.64–59.51% (Cu), and 49.02–60.53% (As). The percent decrease of cadmium heavy metal adsorption with increase in maximum contaminant level (MCL) from 1- to fivefold was 20.0 (SSb), 20.7 (COb), 21.6 (BWb), and 22.9 (AVb). The results of the dosage study indicated that As adsorption was the most beneficial on all four types of biochar, whereas Ni adsorption was the least effective. With increase in application rate of biochar the heavy metals adsorption (%) was also increased. Four different agro-waste valorized biochar were used to treat the wastewater, and the physical and chemical changes that occurred both before and after the biochar treatment were noted. There was a drop in the wastewater CODT, CODD, TSS, ammonia, TKN, TP and pH values of 79.7–103.5%, 57.7–81.5, 52.3–68.4%, 1.23–2.23%, 14.1–20.6%, and 1.23–3.03%, respectively. Furthermore, after being passed through a biochar, the wastewater's Zn, Pb, Cd, As, Cr and Cu levels decreased by 3.26–6.15%, 0.06–0.34%, 0.01–0.08%, 2.37–3.65%, 3.95–5.53%, and 2.24–3.34%, respectively at 2.5 and 5.0 g/litre of wastewater. Thus, in order to comply with regulations for the disposal of wastewater effluent, the process of valorizing biomass into biochar offered enormous potential for the removal of heavy metals in addition to wastewater treatment.
