In 2017, Giudici, Li and the third author constructed the first known family of vertex-primitive $2$-arc-transitive digraphs of valency at least $2$. The smallest digraph in this family admits $\mathrm{PSL}_3(49)$ acting $2$-arc-transitively with vertex-stabilizer $\mathrm{A}_6$ and hence has $30758154560$ vertices. In this paper, we prove that this digraph is the vertex-primitive $2$-arc-transitive digraph of valency at least $2$ with fewest vertices.

An interesting fact is that most of the known connected $2$-arc-transitive nonnormal Cayley graphs of small valency on finite simple groups are $(\mathrm{A}_{n+1},2)$-arc-transitive Cayley graphs on $\mathrm{A}_n$. This motivates the study of $2$-arc-transitive Cayley graphs on $\mathrm{A}_n$ for arbitrary valency. In this paper, we characterize the automorphism groups of such graphs. In particular, we show that for a non-complete $(G,2)$-arc-transitive Cayley graph on $\mathrm{A}_n$ with $G$ almost simple, the socle of $G$ is either $\mathrm{A}_{n+1}$ or $\mathrm{A}_{n+2}$. We also construct the first infinite family of $(\mathrm{A}_{n+2},2)$-arc-transitive Cayley graphs on $\mathrm{A}_n$.

We study G -vertex-primitive and ( G , s ) -arc-transitive digraphs for almost simple groups G with socle PSL n ( q ) . We prove that s ⩽ 2 for such digraphs, which provides the first step in determining an upper bound on s for all the vertex-primitive s -arc-transitive digraphs.

This paper classifies the factorizations of almost simple groups with a factor having at least two nonsolvable composition factors. This together with a previous classification result of the authors reduces the factorization problem of almost simple groups to the case where both factors have a unique nonsolvable composition factor.

In this paper, we show that every finite simple group of order at least $5$ admits an oriented regular representation of out-valency $2$.

Let $\Gamma$ be a graph with vertex set $V$, and let $a$ and $b$ be nonnegative integers. A subset $C$ of $V$ is called an $(a,b)$-regular set in $\Gamma$ if every vertex in $C$ has exactly $a$ neighbors in $C$ and every vertex in $V\setminus C$ has exactly $b$ neighbors in $C$. In particular, $(0, 1)$-regular sets and $(1, 1)$-regular sets in $\Ga$ are called perfect codes and total perfect codes in $\Ga$, respectively. A subset $C$ of a group $G$ is said to be an $(a,b)$-regular set of $G$ if there exists a Cayley graph of $G$ which admits $C$ as an $(a,b)$-regular set. In this paper we prove that, for any generalized dihedral group $G$ or any group $G$ of order $4p$ or $pq$ for some primes $p$ and $q$, if a nontrivial subgroup $H$ of $G$ is a $(0, 1)$-regular set of $G$, then it must also be an $(a,b)$-regular set of $G$ for any $0\leqslant a\leqslant|H|-1$ and $0\leqslant b\leqslant |H|$ such that $a$ is even when $|H|$ is odd. In a graph $\Gamma$ with vertex set $V$, a subset $C$ of $V$ is called an $(a,b)$-perfect set if every vertex in $C$ has exactly $a$ neighbors in $C$ and every vertex in $V\setminus C$ has exactly $b$ neighbors in $C$, where $a$ and $b$ are nonnegative integers. In the literature $(0,1)$-perfect sets are known as perfect codes and $(1,1)$-perfect sets are known as total perfect codes. In this paper we prove that, for any finite group $G$, if a non-trivial normal subgroup $H$ of $G$ is a perfect code in some Cayley graph of $G$, then it is also an $(a,b)$-perfect set in some Cayley graph of $G$ for any pair of integers $a$ and $b$ with $0\leqslant a\leqslant|H|-1$ and $0\leqslant b\leqslant |H|$ such that $\gcd(2,|H|-1)$ divides $a$. This paper is devoted to the classification of flag-transitive 2- ( v , k , 2 ) designs. We show that apart from two known symmetric 2- ( 16 , 6 , 2 ) designs, every flag-transitive subgroup G of the automorphism group of a nontrivial 2- ( v , k , 2 ) design is primitive of affine or almost simple type. Moreover, we classify the 2- ( v , k , 2 ) designs admitting a flag transitive almost simple group G with socle PSL ( n , q ) for some n ≥ 3 . Alongside this analysis we give a construction for a flag-transitive 2- ( v , k − 1 , k − 2 ) design from a given flag-transitive 2- ( v , k , 1 ) design which induces a 2-transitive action on a line. Taking the design of points and lines of the projective space PG ( n − 1 , 3 ) as input to this construction yields a G-flag-transitive 2- ( v , 3 , 2 ) design where G has socle PSL ( n , 3 ) and v = ( 3 n − 1 ) / 2 . Apart from these designs, our classification yields exactly one other example, namely the complement of the Fano plane.

We prove that, given a finite graph $\Sigma$ satisfying some mild conditions, there exist infinitely many tetravalent half-arc-transitive normal covers of $\Sigma$. Applying this result, we establish the existence of infinite families of finite tetravalent half-arc-transitive graphs with certain vertex stabilizers, and classify the vertex stabilizers up to order $2^8$ of finite connected tetravalent half-arc-transitive graphs. The canonical double cover $\mathrm{D}(\Gamma)$ of a graph $\Gamma$ is the direct product of $\Gamma$ and $K_2$. If $\mathrm{Aut}(\mathrm{D}(\Gamma))=\mathrm{Aut}(\Gamma)\times\mathbb{Z}_2$ then $\Gamma$ is called stable; otherwise $\Gamma$ is called unstable. An unstable graph is nontrivially unstable if it is connected, non-bipartite and distinct vertices have different neighborhoods. In this paper we prove that every circulant graph of odd prime order is stable and there is no arc-transitive nontrivially unstable circulant graph. The latter answers a question of Wilson in 2008. We also give infinitely many counterexamples to a conjecture of Maru\v{s}i\v{c}, Scapellato and Zagaglia Salvi in 1989 by constructing a family of stable circulant graphs with compatible adjacency matrices.

We study the covering radii of 2-transitive permutation groups of Lie rank one, giving bounds and links to finite geometry.

A good knowledge of the Jordan canonical form (JCF) for a tensor product of `Jordan blocks' is key to understanding the actions of $p$-groups of matrices in characteristic $p$. The JCF corresponds to a certain partition which depends on the characteristic $p$, and the study of these partitions dates back to Aitken's work in 1934. Equivalently each JCF corresponds to a certain permutation $\pi$ introduced by Norman in 1995. These permutations $\pi = \pi(r,s,p)$ depend on the dimensions $r$, $s$ of the Jordan blocks, and on $p$. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for $\pi(r,s,p)$ to be trivial, building on work of M.J. Barry. We show that when $\pi(r,s,p)$ is nontrivial, it is an involution involving reversals. Finally, we prove that the group $G(r,p)$ generated by $\pi(r,s,p)$ for all $s$, `factors' as a wreath product corresponding to the factorisation $r=ab$ as a product of its $p'$-part $a$ and $p$-part $b$: precisely $G(r, p)={\sf S}_a\wr {\sf D}_b$ where ${\sf S}_a$ is a symmetric group of degree $a$, and ${\sf D}_b$ is a dihedral group of degree $b$., Comment: 27 pages, 5 tables, 1 figure Minor typos corrected

We construct a connected cubic nonnormal Cayley graph on A 2 m − 1 for each integer m ⩾ 4 and determine its full automorphism group. This is the first infinite family of connected cubic nonnormal Cayley graphs on nonabelian simple groups.

Given a graph $\Gamma$, a subset $C$ of $V(\Gamma)$ is called a perfect code in $\Gamma$ if every vertex of $\Gamma$ is at distance no more than one to exactly one vertex in $C$, and a subset $C$ of $V(\Gamma)$ is called a total perfect code in $\Gamma$ if every vertex of $\Gamma$ is adjacent to exactly one vertex in $C$. In this paper we study perfect codes and total perfect codes in Cayley graphs, with a focus on the following themes: when a subgroup of a given group is a (total) perfect code in a Cayley graph of the group; and how to construct new (total) perfect codes in a Cayley graph from known ones using automorphisms of the underlying group.
